Summer 2004
STAR Team recruits members to
promote public understanding
The Sussex Technical Affiliates
Reinforcement (STAR) Team has been
formed at Sussex Technical High School.
Its mission is to promote the general welfare of all the STHS students, to assist
the staff in providing for the educational
needs of the children and to foster cooperation and understanding between the
school and community. Membership is
open to parents, guardians, teachers,
alumni, interested community members
and administrators.
In contrast to a traditional PTA
(Parent Teacher Association), the STAR
Team invites membership from the community and business people. Also, all
membership dues remain at the school
to benefit the students instead of being
shared with a state and national organization. STAR membership dues are $5
and applications may be accepted
throughout the entire school year.
General meetings of the STAR Team
will be held the third Wednesday of the
month from August through June,
expect December, unless otherwise stipulated by the school administration or
the STAR Team president.
The STAR Team will seek to improve
understanding and cooperation between
home and school, through actions and
communication. Members are encouraged to participate in classroom and
school activities. Ways to be involved
include volunteering at the school, being
a guest speaker for a class, chaperoning
field trips, mentoring students and
attending school extra curricular activities.
Two upcoming activities in need of
volunteers to help meet parents and distribute printed information about the
school are Freshman Orientation Day
on Thursday, Aug. 26 and at the 8th
Grade Open House on Saturday, Nov. 6.

EDiS supports Tech
Sussex Technical High School recently
received $10,000 from the EDiS Company during
the fourth EDiS Institute at the Bank One Center
on the Riverfront in Wilmington. EDiS established the EDiS Institute in 1998 as a biennial
half-day forum to share current knowledge on
pivotal issues that influence business and industry. Over 525 business people, school administrators and students attended the EDiS Institute
this year. Benefits from the event benefited vocational education.

Students receive I-CAR certification ...
Seniors in the Auto Body technology program at Sussex Technical
High School received I-CAR certifications reflecting their effort and technical knowledge gained over the past four years. Students completed
training and certifications while in school under the supervision of I-CAR
certified and Sussex Tech instructor Jim Friedel. Seniors could choose
from the following six areas to test in: Fundamentals of Collision Repair,
Damage Analysis 1, 2, 3, 4, and Worker Protection. These awards will be
completed by graduation.

Spanish Honor Society inducts new members ...
The Spanish Honor Society (Sociedad Honoraria Hispanic) of
Sussex Technical High School accepted 16 new members during
evening ceremonies held recently. During the ceremonies, a special
musical presentation was performed in Spanish by inductees Corey
Hopkins, Natalie Quick and Melanie Logan (photo at right). Following
the induction, parents and guests were treated to authentic Mexican
and Spanish food prepared by the students.

Dupont donates $15,000 paint
system to Auto Body Tech
The Auto Body technical area at Sussex
Technical High School recently received a new
Dupont Paint System thanks to the help of Dave
Jones of AutoWorks Collision Center in Dagsboro.
A mentor to the students in the auto body technology, Jones contacted Grant Helmer of Kunkels in
Dover and explained the school's program. As a
result, Helmer, a paint and body specialist in
Dover, worked with instructor Jim Friedel to install
the $15,000 system.
Besides all the necessary toners, bases and
various other products to mix the paint, Kunkel
sent two training instructors to the school. Steve
Martinek and Rob Haubrich spent four days teaching students how to use the system.

Senior’s poster wins state ...
Purnell wins VOD contest ...
Jonathan Purnell was the winner of the Voice of
Democracy audio-essay contest at Sussex
Technical High School, sponsored by Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 7422 in Millsboro. This year's
theme was "My Commitment to America's Future."
Jonathan's audio-essay was then entered in the
regional VOD competition. Students in Mr. Makray's
Organizational Leadership class participated.

Senior Amy Lynn Rodenbaugh (left) was the
recipient of a new computer system, donated by
Verizon Wireless, for being the state winner of
the first Teens Against Sexual Assault (TASA)
public awareness campaign contest.
The
Sexual Assault Network of Delaware (SAND),
CONTACT Delaware, Inc. and participating
Delaware High School Wellness Centers collaborated to host the contest. The TASA Contest is
a statewide campaign designed to heighten the
awareness of adolescents about the issue of
sexual assault. Chrissy Utberg, coordinator of

Environmental
Class of 2006
stirs up a buzz
Sophomore Chelsy Jones feeds
sugar water to the honeybees that
her Environmental class has adopted as a research project.
Over 39,000 bees will be studied
during the next two years until the
class’ graduation in 2006. The class
plans its first harvest of honey in
spring 2005. The class hopes their
research will be of assistance in
reversing the threat of decreasing
population because without honeybees for pollination, there will be no
food for the world.
Students involved in the bee project are Joshua Wolford, Chelsy
Jones, Charles Campbell, Justin Fleetwood, Devin Hudson and Bobbi
Mutschler. Instructor is Nancy Goggin.
2005 Environmental students partner
with Perdue Recycle on STEM project
Members of the Class of 2005 Environmental students have partnered with the University of Delaware and Perdue Agri-Recycle in a
research project to do field trials of Perdue’s MicroSTART 60 organic fertilizer used on watermelons, cantaloupes and pumpkins. The students
have committed to the project throughout the summer when they will
check the crops weekly to analyze growth and quantity. The project provides the juniors with the opportunity to learn how to set up and implement a true research project using proper procedures and protocol. It
will also serve as the Sussex Tech students’ senior STEM project.

Students receive DNREC certification
After three hours of training from the Department of Natural
Resources and Environmental Control, Environmental Technology
students earned certification with Delaware’s Sediment Control
and Stormwater Program. This certification allows them to work
on construction sites as inspectors to ensure that all construction
activities meet state regulations.
Students who received certification are: Francis Bonkowski,
Nelson Warren, James Rickards, Daniel Holston, Brian Demarest,
Randy Riddle, Carleta Passwaters, Den’nisa Thompson, Sarah
Hastings, Jay Marsh, Megal Jewell, Satara Houston and Jessica
Williamson.
Summer 2004
Tech teachers retire
Mary Ellen Taylor will be leaving the world of
teaching this year. She first came to Sussex Tech in
1991 when it became a fulltime school. She and Holly
Joseph co-designed the Techademic Reading program
for Tech. She also taught English during the last two
years. Mrs. Taylor’s teaching career began in 1970 in
the Wicomico (Md.) County School District. However,
she left teaching in 1972 and moved to Brookfield, Vt. where she
and her husband, Ed, were innkeepers for five years. In 1977, the
Taylors returned to Delaware and she taught at Laurel until coming to Tech.
Mrs. Taylor’s gift for teaching has been rewarded by her being
named the 1994 Sussex Tech Teacher of the Year. She also received
the 1995 Superstars in Education award from the Delaware
Chamber of Commerce for Techademic Reading, the 1996 Title I
Exemplary Program award from the Department of Education and
the 2003 University of Delaware Commitment to Education Award.
Retirement was not an easy decision for Mrs. Taylor to make. She
says she will miss everyone and appreciates the exceptional opportunities Sussex Tech offers in professional growth. However, she and
her grandchildren are looking forward to finishing writing a children’s alphabet book featuring unique animals. Mrs. Taylor is supplying the poetry for the book while her 12-year-old granddaughter
does the research and her nine-year-old grandson is doing the artwork. She is also excited about having more time to garden and travel.
Wayne Dukes began his teaching career in 1969
before leaving it four years later to open his own
heating and air conditioning company. In 1990 he
returned to teaching and came to Sussex Tech in
1992 where he has taught math and physics. In
June, Mr. Dukes will again leave teaching and
return to his contracting business.
While at Sussex Tech, Mr. Dukes was a president
of the Sussex Tech Education Association and says that the staff at
Tech is “tops.”
Mr. Dukes says he will miss watching the changes that take
place in the students while they go through high school.
Roger “Doc” Hunt is leaving Sussex Tech after
13 years as teacher of the Athletic Health Care
Technology and the school’s licensed athletic trainer.
He also has helped the school’s nurses and Wellness
Center concerning students’ nutritional needs. Doc
says he has no immediate plans for his future and is
looking forward to a relaxing summer.

aroma of baking cookies during the
last class period of the day. The

small business project of the
Computer
Information
and
Business Systems Technology
classes.

Students donate to Cancer Campaign
Students at Sussex Technical High School donated to the
Cancer Society's Pink Ribbon Campaign to Combat Breast
Cancer. Coordinated by Health Professions student Jaime
Thomas, her classmates raised $300 through their support
which was recently given to the Delmarva Regional Chapter
of the American Cancer Society. Making the presentation are:

Nanticoke Tribe 21 supports Tech’s JROTC program
Environmental Club is tops ...
Devin Hudson, a sophomore at Sussex Technical High
School, won first place in the individual competition in the
statewide FFA Environmental and Natural Resources Career
Development event. The Sussex Tech team placed second
and Charles Campbell was fourth in the individual category.
The Sussex Tech team also won first place in Sussex
County in the State Envirothon.

Nanticoke Tribe 21 recently presented a $300 sponsorship check
to the Sussex Technical High
School JROTC program to support the educational activities of

Set Goals This Summer
The ability to set and reach
goals is essential in school and
in life. Summer is a perfect
opportunity to practice because
most teens have extra time.
Encourage your teen to think
of a goal they would like to
reach, such as jogging a few
miles or reading a challenging
book. Help them design a stepby-step plan. As they make
progress, tell them how they
have improved.
You also can help by being a
role model. Consider setting
your own goal. Better yet,
choose one together. Work hard
- and celebrate - as a team.
