This issue is mostly made up of match reports with photos taken at the second grade semi-final. Unfortunately we have not been able to devote as much time to the magazine this season as last but I hope it has still been a worthwhile read. Next season we hope to continue producing Australia's longest running cricket magazine with all your favourite articles plus some new ones too. Please feel free to approach Brendan or myself if you wish to help or suggest some new ideas. This would be most appreciated I can assure you. I would like to draw your attention to the President's Soapbox in this issue which has an important announcement about a forward planning forum to be held on Sunday 20 April, from 2pm, at the Club. If you cannot make this meeting consider putting a few ideas down on paper and giving them to a member of the committee, so that YOUR CLUB prospers. Finally I would like to remind all members to make sure you notify the committee of any change of address you may have had during the season, or are planning for the winter. This will save money and disappointment when it is time to send out the yearbooks and notification of the AGM. Weston Creek Cricket Club — Founded 1972 Cover Point — Founded 1977 1 Cover Point, April 1997 The President's Soapbox WCCC TRIVIA NIGHT T h i s s e a s o n ' s trivia night was held on Saturday 8 March and proved to be very successful. All who attended had a most enjoyable and fun-filled night. When proceedings got under way there were plenty of questions, plenty of answers and the odd ridiculous (but funny) answer. The teams of junior boys, girls and senior players all got into the spirit of the night. Plenty of laughs were had by all. Teams like "Nicky Buckley's Hooters" were always in with a winning chance but the eventual winner was "Luv's Cupcakes", which included Scott Burrows and Ewan Mackenzie amongst others. Neither of these guys could really be considered cupcakes., or could they ? Let's hope we have many more functions like this one in the future. Finally thank-you to Coca-Cola for providing the prizes. WCCC RAFFLE Before the Trivia Night got under way club patron, Don Brooker, was on hand to draw the p r i z e w i n n i n g tickets in our m a j o r fundraising raffle. It was our most successful to date and thanks must go to all those who Many thanks to our major raffle spoosors QANTAS and McGOOS SPIT ROAST 2 Cover Point, April 1997 by Peter Heathwood made the effort to sell tickets. We need to be more business-like and professional in our approach to running the club and it takes the input of many to achieve this. Weston Creek Cricket Club is your club. If you have any ideas or suggestions they need to be heard. On Sunday 20 April a meeting will be held at the Weston Creek Football Club, commencing at 2.00 pm and you should be there. This is your opportunity to have some input into the future planning and running of your club, so don't miss it. the austral,an a,rune Meruit! i T ^ l J Seconds' slips cordon showing 'Cathy' Freeman how it's done. That evening the players held a seance to find out the cause of their bad luck, but no a n s w e r s were f o u n d . H o w e v e r many suspected that the presence of the famously unfortunate Dave Hazell was the reason for the teams ill luck. Doubts on this theory were cast the next week though, when Dave scored a brilliant 122 n.o. to lead us to victory. In the hot conditions and with the team in trouble this was one of the best innings played in the history of Creek first grade. Indeed it was sufficient to shock his girlfriend Belinda into having a baby that same weekend. Other good batting efforts were 47 from Scott Freeman and 33 from Andrew Heathwood. The best of the bowlers were Sean Mowbray with 4-62 and Jocko with 4-83 from just under one thousand overs. Ginninderra Mowbray Mackenzie 298 4-62 4-83 Weston Creek 8-300 Hazell 122 n.o. We stuck at it well but things didn't go our way and Uni ended up with a large score. Jocko again bowled well to pick up four wickets and Rob Crispe finished with three. Our batsmen handled the bowling easily enough, and it was a bit disappointing that nobody went on with it to post a big score. In the end though Uni's 368 was just too many to expect to get. ANU Mackenzie Crispe Weston Creek Morris Seberry Harvey 9-368 4-98 3-72 236 45 29 29 Mackenzie Heathwood 28 22 Round 7 vs Queanbeyan This time we were cursed in a different way, with Sean Mowbray breaking down early. Apart from that the first three hours of play saw us produce some terrible bowling and fielding. To our credit, we came back after tea and demolished the lower order of Queanbeyan. Again Jocko was the best of the bowlers with five wickets. Going out to bat disaster struck immediately when Hazell blocked one with his previously perfect nose. It is clear that he and Mowbray will have to cease their devil worship if they hope to end their run of bad luck. The next week, resuming at 2-40, we batted into a strong position, only to lose wickets at crucial times. Heathwood batted very well for his first, first grade fifty. The run outs of Hazell, (who continued his Satanic rituals during the next week. Will he ever learn?) and Veletta were particularly damaging. Veletta could have easily made good his captain's call for a quick single, had he been Donovan Bailey. Queanbeyan Mackenzie Sweeney Weston Creek Veletta Heathwood Morris 287 5-91 2-51 257 75 71 33 2nd Grade It is very much an understatement to say that second grade came home with a wet sail perhaps more appropriately we should say they came home in a barnstorming, relentless and merciless fashion. With the one day matches behind us (a semifinal loss to Tuggeranong just after Christmas) it's hard to say what sparked the second grade turn-around. We went from barely being able to make scores of 140 in one-day matches to attaining two outright and one first innings win in our last three two day matches. The new year saw the pressure well and truly applied with us having to win all matches to make the finals - in fact going into the last round there were five teams on 24 points and one on 30 (we were one of the teams on 24). Astonishingly, we finished top of the table after the last round, thanks to a consummate outright victory against the old nemesis Queanbeyan. There were no fewer than 35 players who played second grade this year. It was a welcome relief to be able to put together a stable side for the last few rounds - this factor, combined with a fire within to give ourselves a chance of back-to-back premierships as well as a welcome return to form from some of our top order batsman, sparked our charge home. Leading up to the finals Lachlan Freemantle, Ken Bone and Peter Seberry scored the majority of our runs, while our bowling line- up of Dean Lovett, Mick Sweeney, Ken Bone and Col Hunter decimated all comers. Semi - Final versus Ginninderra West Belconnen The lead up to this game was nothing short of fantastic - nothing like a final series to bring out the best in everyone - and that it did. Training for the two to three weeks prior to the semi-final was very intense and in the end paid off. 5 Cover Point, April 1997 We lost the toss and GWBC elected to bat ( having some confidence in their line-up after scoring 300 plus in the last round). That certainly wasn't the case, and our bowlers sawed through their line-up and dismissed them for 183 in over number 82 - Dean Lovett and Col Hunter captured 3 each while Lachlan Freemantle picked up two very useful wickets. Having some 15 overs to bat until stumps we found ourselves being 2 for 29 at the close of play with openers Rainey and Mowbray both back in the shed. Resuming the next day, Chris Burgess and nightwatchman Ken Bone batted through until lunch where we found ourselves at 2 for 83. Both Chris and Ken had done a sensational job to take the sting out of their bowlers. Post lunch saw us bat for a further hour before Ken Bone was dismissed for a dogged 48 with the score at 3 for 131, about 50 runs short of the GWBC total. By tea we were 4 for 187 with Chris Burgess still at the The win was a truly relentless display and it was time for a few lite beers and await the news of our opponents for the 'Big One'. Scott 'Lamby' Evans about to spin one down.. . ... the ball inflight after leaving Scott's right index finger. 6 Cover Point, April 1997 crease on 80 odd and his partner Scott Freeman looking in ominous form. Just after tea Burgess fell for a magnificent 90 - only fatigue getting in the way of a century. By stumps the Creek was in the commanding position of 7 for 328 with Scott Freeman not out 60 odd and Col Hunter not out on 51. To the amazement of the team and most objective on-lookers, GWBC felt that they needed to come back on the third day for some more punishment. And punishment it was with the Creek finally being dismissed for 400 from its 128 overs. This provided a lead of some 217 runs. In spite of the lead, GWBC saw fit to bat until lunch when the game was abandoned with their score at 1 for 62. Dean Lovett 3-56 Col Hunter 3-59 L Freemantle 2-3 S Freeman 104 Chris Burgess Col Hunter Ken Bone no 90 54 46 Grand Final versus Western Districts At our pre-match warm ups and preparations we opted for our catch cry to be " R E L E N T L E S S " - this word was later expanded to include two extra syllables, which cannot be published. Needless to say our catch cry for the match became "5 SYLLABLES". The Creek won the toss and elected to bat on what was a well grassed wicket. We clawed our way to 203 all out just on the stroke of stumps on the first day. Ken Bone, Scott Freeman and 'Locky' Freemantle all scored 30 odds while Chris Burgess and Peter Seberry scored 20 odds. All batsman felt that while they should have gone onto bigger scores the wicket was one that you were never really going to be set on. Nevertheless we had 203 and they had to get them. The second day turned out to be one of the most amazing days play many in the team have ever competed in. In spite of some quietly confident opposition, Dean 'the Warrior' Lovett tore through the top order, comprehensively bowling his first three victims. At this time Wests were 3 for 24 and soon to be 4 for 42 by drinks. At 5 for 60 it was time to give Lovett a spell with his figures at the time being 4 for 36 off 9 overs. At the other end, the evergreen Ken Bone was doing nothing out of the ordinary - that is if you consider the ordinary to be making the ball talk - Ken steadily picked up wickets and at lunch he and Mick Sweeney had two wickets each (Mick bowled a mean spell of pace, line and length). At lunch Wests were 8 for 85. After lunch Wests were cleaned up for a meagre 106 - Ken Bone picked up the last two wickets. The game wasn't even half over so it was important that we batted sensibly to improve on our first innings lead of 97. A solid opening partnership of 59 by Shelby Rainey and Dan Mowbray saw us through until tea. Shortly after tea, Shelby was dismissed for 28. A couple of gritty hands from Seberry and Freemantle helped us reach 6 for 148 by stumps. Dan Mowbray was out just before stumps for a well compiled 62 and displayed some of the skill and ability we know he has. Mick Sweeney and Chris Burgess - Chris batting down the order due to a slight injury were our not out batsman overnight. HHMHMMHHHHHHHHBHHMHHNHMI Shelby 'Fat' Rainey looking solid in more ways than one Day three saw us start proceedings with a lead of 245 - Wests thought they had some semblance of hope if they could quickly rap up our tail. That was not to be, as Chris Burgess and Mick Sweeney batted for the first 1 1/2 hours before Chris was dismissed for yet another well compiled and timely innings of 53. With the field in and his mates 7 Cover Point, April 1997 in 'the shed' betting on whether Col Hunter would be gallant or subdued, Col didn't let those down who know him well and blasted a quick 25 not out. At lunch on the third day play was finally abandoned - Mick Sweeney played a superb and very subdued hand to be also 30 not out. Weston Creek were victors for 1996/97 and indeed back-to-back premiers. Although there were many fine individual efforts, it was very much a team win including some invaluable support form Super Coach, Ray Hatch and Manager, Jamie Taylor. The theme of "5 SYLLABLES" (RE-*******-LENT-LESS) was carried on to the celebrations which lasted well into the next day and we can be sure that they will resume at presentation night. They, like most sides in the club, were badly disrupted by the absence of so many players in the New Year. But there were some promising performances by the younger brigade that should see them better prepared for the next step in season 1997-98. The innings started with the loss of two early wickets when a partnership of 36 was built between Brenton and Matt. This was developed by Roopoo ( 39 run partnership) until Brenton was out at 4 for 103 after 30 overs. The captain came to the crease and communicated his discontent to Roopoo ( on 19 ) about being so few runs after so many overs on such a small ground. He advised Roopoo that he had to remove his bat from nether orifice( or something like that!). Roopoo then proceeded to belt the bejeesus out of the Ginnindera bowlers. In one over he hit 26 from 5 balls. He finished on 132 runs from 80 balls faced. He hit 15 fours, 8 sixes and his first 50 came up in 53 balls. His second fifty came in just 15 balls! After scoring his first 50 his next 80 runs came in just 26 balls!! His partnership with Conehead (49 from 35 balls) was 159 runs for the fifth wicket in just 16 overs (only 96 balls!!). This was truly sensational batting unlike any seen at the Creek for many a long year. The other lads continued the barrage and we posted a winning score. Nudge and Stuart Henry then wasted the opposition batting and was ably supported by some great fielding. Roopoo and Tommy Purcel both contributing run outs. We smashed them with a god performance from Roopoo. Weston Creek 6 wkts for 40 C Browning 20, A Dapre 6 like Andrew Dapre bowled brilliantly on a track giving him plenty of assistance. 6 catches and two bowled in his eight wickets, which rated in the top 20 all time bowling performances for the Creek. Jason Dodds kept wickets well with 2 catches and no byes. We rearranged our batting order as the captain felt some of the younger players needed experience on a sticky wicket. Brown Dog was sensational, hitting the first ball of the innings for four. Dappers and Browney had a partnership of 26 runs for the first wicket and this ensured a win for the Creek. This win put us into the semi finals of the one day competition. Well done guys. WCCC v ANU Semi final One Day Comp At ANU North Weston Creek 10 for 160 in 45 overs Andrew Dapre 33, Chris Browning 31, Phil Shakespear 25 ANU 9 for 161 in 49.3 overs M Henry 4/19, S Henry 2/16, A Dapre 2/50 We committed the cardinal sin of not batting for 50 overs in this semi final. Dappers and Brown Dog were magnificent. Seebs and Browney had a 50 run 2nd wicket partnership. Shakey and Dappers put on 52 for the 8th wicket. We fought as hard as we could, and the tail really showed some guts. 9 Cover Point, April 1997 We had the runs on the board and we didn't let ANU have an easy win. The bowling was superb and the fielding was sensational. Matt Henry smashed them them by taking 4 for 19. Nudge ( 0 for 19) was unplayable, as evidenced by their opener making a 17 over duck!! Stuart Henry was extremely ferocious taking 2 / 1 6 from ten overs. This was a great effort to stretch ANU to 50 overs and 9 wickets down. We were 3 balls and one wicket away from a place in the final. Very disappointing. A great match. Burrows on fire taking 4 wkts, Colless dazzling taking 3 wkts and sensational throwing by Dapre scoring two direct hits and two run outs from square leg. Who could forget Conehead's throat ball!? Browney and Matt Colless (50 partnership) were as solid as the proverbial constipated duck, and Conehead did the business with Browney for a 54 run unbeaten partnership. In the 2nd innings Matt Henry was the man, taking 3 for 20, ably supported by Colless and Dappers. This was a huge effort by our bowlers as the temperature was extremely hot and it is always difficult to remove a team twice. We had 19 overs in which to score 116 runs to win the match. 10 Cover Point, April 1997 Colless started on fire with 3 fours but it was Conehead the Destroyer who smashed the opposition, scoring an unbeaten 72 (3 sixes and 7 fours). Dappers chipped in with a handy 21 including 2 fours and a six. We got the runs in 16.1 overs and sent the opposition home with an inferiority complex. Yes! All bowlers took some wickets with big Scotty leading with 3fer! Matt Colless and Greg Seebs were the complete professionals with an unbeaten partnership of 104 to have our nose in front by stumps. We won't mention the untimely declaration. The next Saturday ANU batted solidly in 100 degree heat and the spinners did the brunt of the bowling. They made a sporting declaration at tea time leaving us 173 runs to score in 37 overs. Stuart Henry excelled in scoring 79 with 9 fours, and Brenton Wilson scored his maiden half century for the Creek. These two shared a 126 run partnership for the 3rd wicket and we scored the runs with 4 overs to spare. Our 2nd outright win! This was a great win as ANU had just beaten us in two previous encounters. We easily cleaned up the tail with all bowlers chipping in. Well done lads. The run chase was 91 runs with all day to get them. We finished up at 3:00 pm. This match was probably the most boring game I have ever played in. We were always going to win it outright. What a superb effort! We finished the comp as Minor Premiers! A memorable incident from the. game came in the first session when the big Wally (Ramage), decided to field a ball with his foot as it ran through the gully area. He missed the ball but got Conehead's hand! He successfully pinned his hand to the ground, then twisted his foot around to chase the ball! Nice guy! Three stitches and an infected hand. Thanks Wally! Try using your hand next time. WCCC v Tuggera nongs Semi final Two Day Comp At Mawson Tuggeranongs 10 for 181 Burrows 3 / 39, Browning 2 / 4 1 , Power 2 / 48, Bulger 1 / 4 8 Weston Creek 6 for 202 Malbon 61, G Seberry 47, Rhynehart 34 no, Dapre 16 We won the toss and sent the Tuggers in on a soft slow wicket. Mick Power got the first breakthrough at 20 runs and then Tuggers looked solid until the Brown Dog made some magic, getting 2 in the one over just before lunch (3 for 73 at lunch). On return we had some luck in the first over with both batsmen at one end for a gimme run out. Scott Burrows was bowling like a demented demon from the southern end, Conehead taking a sound catch in slips to make it 5 for 114. Brenton Wilson then turned the game in our favour with smart fielding at short backward square leg and a direct hit at the bowlers end with the batsmen metres out his ground (What a goose! 6/133). Ryan Bulger then got into the game with the new batsmen caught in slips for a duck. 7 for 134. Scotty Burrows and Nudge cleaned the tail up and we had rissoled Tuggers in a session taking 7 for 108. We had 34 overs to face that evening and were 3 for 97 at stumps after being 3 for 23. Greg Seberry and the skipper put on a partnership of 104 runs to break Tuggers heart and then Adam Rhynehart and Dappers carried the day to be 5 for 182. Tuggers called the game off at 6 for 202 and we were in the grand final with a very solid performance. This game was sweet revenge as we had not beaten Tuggeranong this season in two close games. WCCC v NCA Grand Final Two Day Comp At Mawson NCA 10 for 207 Ryan Bulger 5 / 49, Mick Power 2 / 42, Scott Burrows 2 / 70 11 Cover Point, April 1997 Weston Creek 198 Andrew Dapre 45, Brenton Wilson 39, Adam Rhynehart 33, Mick Power 32, Ryan Bulger 16 no NCA were sent in to bat on a reasonable wicket. Mick Power struck first with the score on 45 and a smart catch in slips by Gleavesy to remove their skipper for 14. Scott Burrows chipped in next over and bowled the other opener. (2 for 47 ) At lunch the score was 2 for 103 with a lot of work to be done. In the third over after lunch Ryan Bulger took his first wicket when he had the Reverend reaching into thin air, stumped by Phil Marchant. This was a breakthrough as NCA had no idea what Bulge was doing! Nudge then got an LBW (4 for 125) and Bulge had their top scorer caught at slip in the next over (5 for 125). Scotty picked up his 2nd wicket with a fast bouncer, caught by Gleaves at mid wicket. NCA were 8 for 183 at tea, losing 6 for 80 during the session. Bulge completed a bag of wickets soon after lunch (9 for 207) and then Adam Rhynehart fooled the old head of Peter Howes with some stylish foxing at cover point to have him run out and NCA dismissed for 207. A target well within reach reach of our batsmen. We had 23 overs to face before stumps and unfortunately made a terrible start. We lost our top order ( 4 wkts) for only 23 runs. Seebs and Conehead had made their smallest 12 Cover Point, April 1997 scores for the season in 4th grade. It was up to the youngest players in the team to shoulder the major responsibility of winning the final and they came within a whisker of achieving that feat. Adam and Brenton made a sound start of a 55 run partnership before Adam clipped one off his hip and was caught behind square leg ( 5 for 78). Brenton then had a 12 run partnership with Dappers before he was bowled. (6 for 90) Phil Marchant was LBW for 2 (7 for 92) when Nudge came to the crease. We were 7 for 109 at lunch. 3 wkts in hand and 98 runs to score. Mick and Andrew made a 42 run partnership of which Nudge contributed 32. Dappers was on 10 and the score was 8 for 134. Bulger and Dapre then batted almost to tea before NCA resorted to gutter tactics and deliberately hit Andrew in the chest with a bean ball. Andrew was unsettled and his batting changed. He was missed twice before being bowled for 45. He and Bulge had made a 54 run 9th wicket partnership. ( 8 for 188) We needed a twenty run 10 wicket partnership. Scotty and Bulge put on 10 when Scotty smacked an on drive and was caught ankle high at mid on. Our total was 198 just 9 runs behind NCA. This was a sad ending to our fairy tail run into the finals, but we can be proud of the fact that the opposition had to resort to dishonourable tactics to win the game. 5th Grade Now that the season is over we can look back and say our performances were disappointing. It is hard to recall one match where the opposition actually beat us. We beat ourselves through either bad batting or very poor fielding. Our bowling attack was good all year and could not be blamed for any of the defeats; as a matter of fact we were the only side to have Queanbeyan's measure with the ball all season (they won both competitions without raising a sweat). On a more positive note I believe our side achieved plenty with the number of younger players progressing through fifths to the h i g h e r grades. Andrew Dapre, Mehan Sirriwardhane and Ryan Bulger bagged us plenty of wickets and were rewarded with promotion and then continued their form in higher grades. Andrew and Ryan also showed they have the ability to score runs in some cases under pressure. Josh Skurowski only played a couple of games in higher Coolernori Kiosk Weston's TattersoISs Agent & Tobbaconist & ABC products Contact Kym 2H8 5030 grades but showed me enough with the bat and his fielding to warrant promotion next season. To the rest of the fifth grade side (some 32 players) I say thankyou for the season and I hope we can get back together again in October. Finally congratulations to Col and his second graders and a special thankyou to Peter H e a t h w o o d and the c o m m i t t e e f o r an enjoyable season. Well done fella's. Not quite good enough to make the semi finals but we did cause a few upsets which included a victory over the minor premier, and eventual premiers, in the final round of the season. Round 15 We started our winning run with an absolute flogging of Ginninderra. We won the toss and batted. After a good start that saw us 130 after 32 overs, thanks to great batting by Tony Haider and Craig Scott, 'Captain Cranky' Webster strode to the crease with an air that something big was going to happen. Thanks to advice from Greg Rouse (you need to hit the ball), Webster then proceeded on the theory that you get a bigger swing if you hit across the line. This resulted in him smiting bowlers to all parts of the ground. His 79 included seven 6's, six 4's and a magnificent runout that saw him cement top score by luring Craig Scott into a run that just wasn't there. Comments from the bowlers included "This is like bowling in television highlights" and "You should buy a lottery ticket". His dissmissal brought a sigh of relief for homeowners in the vicinity. After this Ginninderra rightly decided that the game was already over, and capitulated without a fight. WCCC 7/262 Ginninderra 105 Webster 79, Haider 57, Scott 42,Wylks 4/29 with a match winning 42 in 42 overs and Brett McKay's equally boring cameo 59 not out (only one 6). Tony Haider and Ian Webster followed their half-centuries the week before with solid ducks. The bowlers then ripped through the top order taking 7/ 108 before deciding that their fearless was a bit bored and let them put on 63 for the eighth wicket. Gerrard Oakes then showed concern at the captains rapidly depleting stock of hair and considerately ran a batsman out. Tuggeranong then folded in the traditional fashion. WCCC 5/189 Tugg Valley McKay 59*, Wylks 2/33 Esposito 42, Taylor 3/13, Round 17 'Captain Cranky' was in a rare good mood this particular morning and allowed the opposition to win the toss and bat. We took Revell Steering Braddon & Fyshwick Steering Specialists Round 16 We followed this up with a win over the Tuggeranong Valley side that wasn't really as close as it looked. Once again we batted magnificently with the the highlights being, Dave Esposito boring the opposition to death 14 Cover Point, April 1997 9/186 Contact Craig 247 7711 wickets steadily until we unveiled our own genuine imitation Bevan, Jimmy Stewart. He bowled 33 very good balls that the batsmen could not get bat on and 3 porky pies that had 3 very silly looking batsmen hitting catches to disbelieving fielders. Their innings also featured an incident in which a leg side SHNICK was called a wide. 'Captain Cranky' expressed his disappointment and also that in his opinion it was clearly out. The umpire agreed wholeheartedly both that it was out and the batsman had hit it and in the ensuing conversation postulated his belief that you could in fact be caught from a wide. His belief was that the rules had been changed recently to allow for just such an incident as this and managed to spout dozens of examples. Much impressed by the umpires stupidity 'Captain Cranky' thought it would be better to let the umpire keep on smoking whatever he was smoking and carry on. Then it was our turn to bat. Chasing 153 to win we hurt their bowlers badly by getting 167 in 20 overs. The import of the week Mick O'Ryan smashed 51 before boredom caused his downfall and Wylks and Karl Hoffman could only raise enough enthusiasm to hit five 6's between them. Then we all went back to the pub to sing 3 in a row. Wests 152 WCCC 4/167 Stewart 3/26, O'Ryan 51, Wylks 45*, K Hoffman 19* Round 18 The old foe ANU Old Boys were out for victory to cement a spot in the finals. They batted first and encountered Mike Hodkinson. He bowled a very boring spell with 47 balls out of 56 having no runs scored off them in a spell of 2/11. Andrew Mathews bowled very well to help us restrict them to 166. We all then voted for the tight finish and attempted to throw the game. Paul Wylks brought up his first 50 of the season after being stranded 3 times in the 40's. Jeremy Bradley batted well for 35. Ian Webster scored 22 in 7 balls with a typical lack of restraint. Jamie Taylor hit a 6 (his first ever). We beat them even after some dubious wide calls in an effort to jack up their score. ANU Old Boys 9/166 WCCC 8/167 Mathews 3/39, Hodkinson 2/11, Wylks 62, Bradley 35, Webster 22 Round 19 We lost who cares? I don't want to talk about it. WCCC 8/217 Tugg Vikings 4/217 Bradley 51, Webster 43, Taylor 2/34 Round 20 Well we always enjoy playing ANU with their customs of making the bowler fetch the ball if he gets hit for six and constant sledging of their own captain. The ANU captain made an interesting decision to field upon winning the toss having only seven players. However they all eventually turned up about five overs into the game. We batted much too slowly against a bowling attack lacking any of the elements of a good attack (Pace, Bounce, Direction, Aggression and lack of personal hygiene). We got about 180 and ANU all had to go home early so they threw their wickets away in an effort to keep their other commitments. WCCC 185 ANU 108 Stewart 34, Haider 25, Webster 25, Taylor 4/45, Shean 3/16, Webster 2/25 Round 21 This match started with a display of true 6th grade spirit. The WCCC captain made it clear that he wished to bat first and smash 15 Cover Point, April 1997 NCA's bowlers into next week. The NCA captain agreed that he and his men would like nothing better than to chase leather for the first half of the afternoon and so no toss was necessary. Against the table leaders this was going to be an uphill battle. Or it was until Tony Haider went out to bat and demolished the NCA attack to the tune off 132 in 25 overs. He hit twelve 6's and ten 4 ' s to destroy the bowlers' confidence in their ability to bowl. Arron Hoffman hoisted some m a g n i f i c e n t hits over the ( i m a g i n a r y ) grandstand. This was also our biggest total of the season. At least we peaked at the right end of the season. NCA obligingly decided that everyone wanted to go to the pub and proceeded to collapse with a minimum of fuss. This was much appreciated by WCCC batsmen as they were tired from swinging the bat so much. WCCC 7/266 NCA 145 Haider 132, A Hoffman 46, Wylks 21*, Wylks 5/51, Taylor 4/30 Late Cuts with Ewan Mackenzie Congratulations to Col Hunter and the entire second grade team on winning the premiership. They displayed tremendous fighting spirit and were RELENTLESS in their crushing victories over Ginninderra in the semi-final and Wests in the grand final. oooooo Unfortunately fourth grade could not join the party but they fought gallantly to only lose by nine runs. The performance of our young players, in particular, was very satisfying as they displayed fighting spirit the equal of second grade's after the Creek's top order had collapsed. OOOOOO Many of life's patterns are cyclical and the arrival of new talent at the Creek is one of these. This season has been one of the best for a long time in this regard. While this has been a poor season for results by our high standards the arrival of tyros such as Lachlan Freemantle, Mehan Siriwardhane, Ryan 16 Cover Point, April 1997 Bulger and Brentyn Wilson (and others) augurs well for the future. These players along with young 'veterans' still on the way up the grades, like Dan Mowbray, Adam Rhynehart and Aaron Gleaves (and others), should form the nucleus of our top grades for some time to come.
