A Word from our President
SINCE ENJOYING the last publication of The KeyNote a year ago, many activities and festivities have occurred
throughout the organization. Yes, 2013 was an exciting year,
filled with chapter shows, fun-themed Area Conventions,
productive Area Council endeavors, progressive decisions by
the International Board of Directors, and plenty of harmonizing.
A brief overview of the year gives us opportunity to convey our
congratulations, to extend our hand of welcome, to express
our thanks and to generally celebrate Harmony!
We are ecstatic over welcoming two new chapters to
our ranks: The Sugartones of Alliston, Ontario (directed
by Jan-Ake Westin*); and Bella Nova Chorus of Herndon,
Virginia (directed by Richard Lewellen). Each chorus
chartered with more than 30 members, most of whom are
new to singing barbershop harmony! While presiding over
their respective chartering ceremonies, I was touched by the
genuine smiles, and tears of joy that clearly expressed their
delight in being a part of the chorus and of an international
organization of sisters in harmony. Our heartfelt welcome
and congratulations to all!
The membership voted to accept Affiliate Membership (for
men), which went into effect November 1, just in time for the
very first applicant to be recognized at the Opening Ceremony/
Membership Meeting on Thursday at IC&C. Congratulations
and welcome to our friend, Shannon Elswick, who is the
Director of Sisters of Sound chapter in Clermont, Florida, and
serves as the current President of the Barbershop Harmony
Society. (*While attending IC&C, Director Jan-Ake Westin
became the first Affiliate Lifetime Member!)
Additional ballots cast by the membership elected
International Board Members, approved a Corporate Bylaw
2
change (re officer insurance), and approved a dues increase
(effective with the 2014 membership renewals). Harmony
continues to celebrate its democratic governing through the
voice of its members.
Let’s take a moment to reflect upon the sacrifice and
volunteered hours of those who helped each of us enjoy
our hobby this past year. To chapter Presidents and Board
Members, to Committee Chairs and Members, to chorus
Directors, to Music Team Members, to International Board
Members and Assistants - we express our sincere gratitude to
them all for giving of themselves on our behalf.
The final and major event of the organization took place in
November in Windsor, Ontario, where over 900 gathered for
Harmony’s 54th International Convention & Contests. The
Convention Team (Manager Jan DelVecchio, and members
Marianne Cooke, Barbara-Ann MacIntosh, Chris Hembel
and Kath Morgan) planned and provided a thrilling event
filled with memory-making moments.
With 28 quartets and 23 choruses competing during the
weekend, over 775 contestants (including 4 male Directors)
crossed the stage. We applaud all award recipients – and
extend our heartiest congratulations to all the Medalists.
For their outstanding performances, we express salutations
to our 2013 International Championship Quartet
(Harmony Queens), Spot On, and to our 2013 International
Championship Chorus, the Village Vocal Chords!
Each singer at IC&C presented to the appreciative
audience her best performance possible, thus earning her the
appropriate title of “winner.” Thank you to everyone for
entertaining and inspiring us!
The New Year, like every year, will have its challenges
as well as its benefits. I welcome it all; and I thank you in
advance for your support in working (and playing) together
to create more opportunities for Harmony to celebrate and
enjoy the rewards of friendship and song.

All the Winners in Windsor!
IC&C 2013 in Windsor, Ontario
BIG MACHINES! Bright
lights! Bells and whistles! Talk about
stimulation! If you were in Windsor
at IC&C then you experienced all of
this, and if you were not with us this
time, let us fill you in on some of the
happenings.
The International Board of
Directors began their Annual Meeting
on Sunday evening, following dinner
together. You can see by the meeting
minutes that they were busy through
Wednesday afternoon. In addition to
restructuring the Board of Directors,
they were also able to complete a
number of projects they had been
working on throughout the year, and
assign new ones for the year ahead.
Traditionally, Wednesday is the day
that most members arrive. And this
year, the Hotel was an adventure in
navigation. The Casino experience
was exciting! It was also tempting,
as travel through the Casino was
necessary to get to rooms and events.
Do I try it now? Do I wait till later?
Will I win anything or just make
my donation to the Big Machine?
While we did have some winners in
the Casino, there were many more
winners simply by attending!!
Wednesday evening was sing with
the Queens! Harmony members
and non-members alike enjoyed the
experience and enjoyed knowing that
all of the proceeds went to support
our youth program. We thank our
gracious Queens who volunteer their
time and talent to this successful
event.
Thursday morning brought us all
together for our Opening Ceremony
and Membership Meeting. Highlights
of the meeting are included with
the Annual Meeting Minutes in the
members’ only section of our website.
The first ever Affiliate Membership
was presented to Shannon Elswick,
President of the BHS, and Director
of our very own Sisters of Sound.
Many people were recognized for
their contributions to Harmony,
Incorporated. The International
President’s award was presented
to Jacquie Jensen, for her many

accomplishments and years of tireless
service for Harmony, Inc. It was also
at this meeting where International
President, Jeanne O’Connor, and the
International Board were installed.
Because education is the purpose
of our organization, Thursday,
traditionally, is dedicated to education
classes. Instructors were drawn from
the ranks of the International Board,
Assistants, Judges and Champions,
and classes offered something for
everyone, with opportunities to learn
many new things!

our past Queen quartets still singing
together after all these years. Our
1963 Queens “Harmony Honeys”
were celebrated for their 50th
anniversary and 2003 Queens
“Hot Topic” for their 10th. It is so
wonderful to remember these quartets
and see some of the members singing
in other quartets.
Friday morning was the Annual
Delegates and Associates Meeting
where our chapter presidents and
associates are welcome to attend,
review decisions of the International
Board, and discuss issues from the
Board Meeting.
The Quartet Semi-Finals were
scheduled immediately following the
Delegates and Associates meeting. We
were compelled to watch as we felt
Judges join in the closing song at the Quartet Finals
their knees knock, felt their lips stick,
and breathed with them every breath
they took. We shared in the excitement
as the Finalists were announced.
Friday evening we were entertained
by the Quartet Finals. Our new
Harmony Queens not only won
the contest, they were also voted
“Audience Favorite”, a new award
this year, representing the votes of
100 audience members, and collected
at the end of the Quartet SemiFinals. Congratulations, “Spot On”,
you certainly were! Following the
crowning ceremony, we lined the
hallway and cheered for our medalists
in our Medalist Fanfare!
Twenty three choruses participated
in the Chorus Contest, beginning on
Saturday morning. When all was

said and done, scores were tallied
and awards announced, heartfelt
congratulations and a standing ovation
went to the Village Vocal Chords
on their Gold Medal performance.
Thank you for the music!
Saturday evening following dinner
was the Championship Showcase. In
addition to enjoying performances by
medalist quartets and choruses, we all
experienced great joy in being together.
We are more than contestants, rivals,
and challengers. We’re family. We’re
sisters and brothers. We’re Harmony,
We’re Strong!

The President's Award was created by the International Board of
Directors of Harmony, Inc. in 2010 to be presented at IC&C each

2013 International Harmony Queens Spot On
Maggie
I actually attended my first
barbershop convention before I was
born, and became a regular patron
of the Barbertots room at the men’s
international conventions when I was
three months old.
Luckily I grew up loving barbershop
music, otherwise I would have spent
many long weekends sitting through
hours of performances while my
parents immersed themselves in their
hobby. My mom has been a member
of Sweet Adelines for over 30 years
and a member of Harmony, Inc. off
and on for over 20 years, having been
a charter member of Heart of Indiana
and later editor of The Key-Note. My
dad’s been a barbershopper for over 25
years, and my older brother joined my
dad’s chorus when he was seven.
Although I’m also a trumpet and
piano player and member of several
school choirs, and founded my school’s
female a cappella group, my first love
as a performer was dance. I started tap
lessons at three, and became part of the
competition troupe at my dance studio
when I was four. For years, dance
was my passion. I won many awards,
including state and national titles, and
was sure I’d pursue a career in dance.
Then one day, after being a perennial
spectator, the barbershop bug bit. My
mom’s chorus qualified to compete
at the Sweet Adelines international
competition in Seattle in 2010, and I
decided I wanted to be a part of that.
So when I was 13 I joined Capital City
Chorus and from there my barbershop
“career” took off.
A couple of years later my mom,
who is originally from Chicago and
was traveling back there regularly
for work, decided to also join her
hometown Sweet Adelines chorus,
The Melodeers. I asked if I could
join too, and although it took some
creative logistics since I would usually
need to be back in Indianapolis for
school the next morning, we worked
it out, and my mom and I were on
stage with them to win their sixth SAI
international chorus championship in
Houston in fall, 2011.
It was a little over a year later when
my friends and fellow barbershop
brats Kris, Joy, and Jen asked if I’d be
interested in auditioning as tenor for
their new quartet, my first, and you
know the rest. I’ll graduate from high
school and start college in 2014, and
I hope to pursue a double major in
Chemistry and Music. ■

Many of you know that this is
not my first time writing one of these
articles. I’ll try to make it fresh. I had
the wonderful fortune to grow up in
a barbershop family. My father joined
barbershop at the age of 20, and met
my mom through mutual barbershop
friends. My twin brother, Drew, and
I had a great time traveling with our
parents to barbershop events, as well as
‘normal’ family vacations. Drew joined
the Island City Chorus of BHS at the age
of 10, and made great contributions to
the chorus very early on in his career. He
is now living in Louisville, KY with his
wife, Kris (yes, my bass). Drew is doing
a Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting
at University of Louisville and is the
director of The Thoroughbreds Chorus
of BHS. My parents both still live in
Montreal, Quebec.
I joined Harmony, Inc. in 1998, at
the age of 13, and sang with Montreal
City Voices for 13 years. During those
13 years, I sang in three quartets,
including Ringtones!, 2010 Harmony
Queens. I also had the privilege of

serving as the chorus’s assistant
director for 8 years. During that time,
I decided to further my knowledge
of the barbershop craft. I joined the
Harmony, Inc. judging program in
the Singing category. In June 2013, I
became a Certified Singing Judge.
In December of 2012, I moved
to Chicago, IL to attend The Soma
Institute for Clinical Massage
Therapy. During the year, what started
out as great friendships developed
into family. Lynn Randall, Lauren
Lindeman and Danny Randall have
really become a second family for
me, and I can’t imagine my Chicago
life without them. In fact, I’m sure
many of you have heard me call Lynn
“Mom”. I also had the honor of

Of course, when Kris and Joy heard
that I was going to be living in Chicago,
we started looking for a tenor. We had
our first rehearsal with Maggie at Mary
Marek’s house, in February 2013. Since
then, we have been having such a blast
learning new music and getting to
know each other better. Through our
ups and downs, I thank Kris, Joy, and
Maggie for the opportunity to take this
journey with them.
Finally, I would like to thank all of
my families for their continued support.
I would not be who I am today without
you. I love you all. ■

Much like the rest of Spot On, I
have been singing for my entire life,
and to say that it consumes me would
be an understatement. It is every aspect
of my life and I couldn’t be happier.
Maybe I should start at the beginning.
I’m Joy Coleman, and I sing baritone
with Spot On. I was born in the fall of
1988 in Cincinnati, OH and I attended
my first barbershop chorus rehearsal
when I was six months old. My Dad
decided to take me with him to one of his
rehearsals with the Southern Gateway
Chorus (SGC) which he joined at age
15. Barbershop has always been a very
important part of my life, and I would
be nowhere without it. My parents
met through SGC, I met my boyfriend
through barbershop, and I know that
it will continue to be everything to me.
Throughout high school, I sang in
choir, took voice lessons, performed
in plays and musicals, and received
the Senior Choral Award. Winning
this award gave me the honor of
singing my senior solo during our
high school graduation ceremony.

At age 15, I joined the local Sweet
Adelines chorus, the Queen City chorus
directed by Lynn Hartmuth, another
one of my music heroes. Queen City
went on to win the small chorus
International competition when I was
16, and then ended up merging with
the Seven Hills chorus to form the
Cincinnati Sound Chorus (CSC). While
with CSC, I had several leadership
roles including House and Properties
Manager, lead section leader, and
assistant director.
However, in May I travelled to St.
Louis one Thursday night with Drew
Wheaton and the Thoroughbred
chorus to experience an Ambassadors
of Harmony chorus rehearsal, because
who wouldn’t want to watch the
great Jim Henry direct his two-time
(at the time) gold medalist chorus in
a rehearsal? There, I met the love of
my life, Matt Suellentrop, and in July
I moved to St. Louis because longdistance relationships are awful. ;)
All of this “blah, blah, blah” is so
that I can express how much I truly
love Harmony, Inc. I am constantly
blown away by the love and support

Many of you may be wondering,
“where did this girl come from, I’ve
never seen her before.” While I may be
new to Harmony, Incorporated, I am
not new to barbershop. My parents,
brother, cousin, husband and in-laws
are all barbershoppers. Both of my
grandfathers and one of my greatgrandfathers sang barbershop, making
me a fourth-generation barbershopper.
I joined my first chorus, Pride of
Kentucky, in 1999 at the age of 13
singing tenor, and continued to do so for
the following 8 years. In 2007 I joined
Lucky Day quartet (singing bass), and in
2008 won my very first regional quartet
competition. We went on to win one more
regional competition, and competed
at the Sweet Adeline international
competition 4 times, placing as high as
12th. I also competed in a YWIH quartet
named the Brats with Jen and Joy and
Ringtones! tenor, Samantha Arten. We
placed 2nd in the 2009 International
Rising Star competition.
Now, I am a happy member of
Harmony, Incorporated and Sweet
Adelines International. I serve as a bass
section leader for the Pride of Kentucky
Chorus (SAI) and I am a member of the
prospective Bluegrass Harmony Chorus
(HI), both in Louisville, Kentucky.
I am very proud of the barbershop
accomplishments in my family. My
grandfather, Jim Miller, was on the
risers when the Thoroughbreds won
their first international, and directed
them for their final 6 wins. He also
directed the Southern Gateway Chorus
when they won in 1992. My father
is a 2-time international quartet gold
medalist with the Interstate Rivals
(’87) and Marquis (’95), and the 2012
seniors quartet champion with Rusty
Pipes. My husband placed 5th in the
2013 international with Forefront.
There is a little bit more to my life
than barbershop, if you can believe
it. I graduated from Eastern Kentucky
University with a BS in Special
Education, birth to primary. I work for
the University of Louisville at the Early
Learning Campus in an infant room.
I would like to say thank you to
the people of HI, for making us feel
so welcome. I also need to thank the
beautiful ladies of Spot On for helping
make a dream come true. Joy, Jen and
Maggie, you are truly beautiful inside
and out, and I couldn’t imagine a better
group of women with whom to share
this experience. ■

Where’s the Magic?
A LINE from the song “Frosty
the Snowman” comes to mind as I
write this article: “There must have
been some magic in that old silk hat
they found.” I try to think of what the
19 time International Championship
chorus, The Village Vocal Chords, do
that contributes to our success as a
chorus...where the magic comes from.
Let’s see…we use the skills of our
Music Team members (section leaders,
choreography team and our Certified
Director) to move forward musically.
Toward this end we work on the basics
every week, but so does your chorus,
right? And we audition members to
become part of our village, to be sure
they can hear and match a pitch, but is
that so different from what your chorus
does? We have an annual retreat each
fall, but lots of Harmony choruses have
retreats, some more often than annually.
We get coaching, usually once in the
fall and once in the spring, but that’s
also something that many Harmony
choruses do. Perhaps different from
some Harmony choruses, we seldom
have extra rehearsals as we approach
contest, and usually only rehearse for
about an hour during a contest weekend,
reflecting our philosophy that working
smart all year will help us to achieve our
best performance. So what is the magic?
I guess I’d have to say the magic is
our members and their clear goals to
become the best performers they can
be. While our music team provides
guidance in learning music, it’s our
members who turn in tapes to their
section leaders to be sure they have
learned the notes and words correctly.
And while these same musical leaders
provide weekly review of proper
singing and visual techniques, it’s our
members who ask for extra sessions
outside of rehearsal to solidify these
important aspects of performance. It
is not unusual for an individual or a
small group to request extra assistance
from one of our musical leaders to
practice what has been taught on a
Tuesday night. I think it’s accurate
to say that VVC rehearsals take place
weekly at our rehearsal location, and
in every VVC home through-out the
week, using their rehearsal audio tapes
and their bathroom mirrors.
And another part of the magic is the
wonderful mix we have of experienced
and award winning members standing
alongside new and excited rookies.
Our 34 member “village” consists of a
range from 50+ year members to first
year members, and that mix works for
us. The experience and knowledge
of our experienced members is more
valuable than this short article can
reflect. But perhaps the thoughts of our
five new members, who competed with
us for the first time in November, can
best be summarized in the words of one
new member:
“When I first came to the chorus
I had never sung with other people
before. I had no idea the chorus
I stumbled upon just happened to
be an international championship
chorus. They were a group of the
warmest, most loving women I have
ever met. They took me in, let me sing
with them, encouraged me, taught
me, and supported me in a multitude
of ways. I learned that it was safe to
open my eyes when I sang, that I could
trust my tones, and that it is possible
for two left feet and awkward arms
to master a few moves with a lot of
practice! I never thought there would
be a time where I would actually be up
on stage performing with them, much
less competing. When we perform,
magic happens, and I am part of that
magic now.”
Well said, my friend, the magic is in
the people on the risers, in their love
of each other and the harmony they
share. That magic is available to every
Harmony chorus – find yours and, like
Frosty, spread it around! ■

Sugartones Charter Celebration March 25, 2013
OVER FIFTY Harmony, Inc.
members welcomed Sugartones to the
organization on March 25th last year.
You could feel the energy throughout the
room at the Gibson Centre in Alliston,
Ontario, when Jeanne O’Connor,
International President of Harmony,
Inc., officiated as each member signed
the Charter for the Chapter. Bev
Jackson, New Chapter Coordinator,
assisted in the ceremony.
We were entertained by The
Overtones from Guelph under the
direction of Dianne Ritz, Chord
Spinners from St. Jacobs under the
direction of Kathy Hanneson, and
the quartet Studio 4 from A Cappella
Showcase.
Sugartones has started a tradition
where each member is given a
decorated sugar cube, with the
member’s initials, to place in a jar
during a very touching candlelight
ceremony. The jar will travel with
them as a good luck charm for
competitions. ■

New Bella Nova Chorus Charters
BELLA NOVA Chorus, the
Herndon, Va., chapter of Harmony,
Inc., celebrated its charter on January
5, 2014, as President Jeanne O’Connor
conducted the chapter’s first installation
ceremony. The chorus chartered in
October with more than 35 members
and it continues to grow with members
as young as 8 years old. The chorus
is directed by notable barbershopper
and singing judge Richard Lewellen
and follows a unique rehearsal model
of hosting practices two Sunday
afternoons per month--primarily to
accommodate out-of-town members,
to include youth members, and to avoid
the hassle of Washington, D.C., traffic.
The charter party featured
entertainment by guest quartets
Epic, 2012 Harmony Queens;
Mayhem, 2013 Mid-Atlantic District
Champions; and Shameless, a quartet
representing Bella Nova’s “brother”
chapter, the Fairfax (Va.) Jubil-Aires
Chorus of the Barbershop Harmony
Society. In a touching ceremony,
Jeanne swore in Bella Nova’s inaugural
Board of Directors, which includes
Christina Lewellen (president and
tenor of Epic); Jerri White (music VP);
Cat Lander (membership VP); Rachel
Melnick-Lippart (program VP); Gloria
Gelabert (finance VP/treasurer);
Roxanne Powell (administrative VP/
secretary); and members-at-large
Stephanie Dingle, Carey Fagerstrom,
and Laura Kodres. Also participating
in the ceremony were director Richard
Lewellen and assistant director
Kristina Adams (baritone of Epic).
With the support of the Fairfax
Jubil-Aires, Bella Nova followed up
its charter party with its first “gig”
just two weeks later. Coming off the
excitement of its debut performance,
the chorus is preparing for contest and
its first show, which will be held in
conjunction with the Fairfax Jubil-Aires
on April 5, 2014. To see more pictures

2013 LABBS Convention
ALTHOUGH IT IS only the Barbershop Harmony Society
(BHS) and Sweet Adelines International (SAI) who typically
accept our invitations to have a representative attend our
IC&C and receive a complimentary All Events Pass (and we
receive same from them), Harmony, Inc. also receives invitations
from other organizations from around the world, including
LABBS. This year, when LABBS invited Harmony’s President (or her
designee) to attend, Jeanne of course declined but thanked
them for the invitation. Then, aware that our Website Manager
Nicola Stevens has had to travel back to her homeland to care
for her ailing mother, she contacted her to see if, by chance,
she’d be in England in October. Sure enough, she was going to
be there with her sister at the time of the LABBS convention in
Wales.
LABBS had the pleasure of welcoming Nicola Stevens to
this year’s convention where she presented the Harmony
Incorporated trophy to the 3rd place chorus winners,
Signature. The chorus based in Iver Heath, Bucks is directed by
Timm Barkworth who is pictured here receiving the trophy.
So, Jeanne designated Nicola the Harmony, Inc. representative,
which made LABBS happy and delighted Nicola. LABBS was
wonderful to Nicola, and invited her to present the trophy that
Harmony donated to LABBS years ago, which goes to their 3rd
Place Medalist chorus each year.

The Minor Chords 2013
THE MINOR CHORDS
chorus is Harmony, Incorporated’s
International Youth Chorus, consisting
of all youth members (age 25 years and
younger) who attend the International
Convention and Contest each November.
Every year, these young ladies have the
wonderful experience of learning new
music, reuniting with old friends and
making new ones, and performing in
various places, and at numerous events,
throughout the convention.
In November 2013, in Windsor, ON,
the Minor Chords had the pleasure of
being directed by Trinda Ernst. Trinda
is a member of Valley Voices from Area
1 and past International President of
Harmony, Inc. Trinda chose the song,
“A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes”,
arranged by Lorraine Rochefort, and
Minor Chords perform on stage in Windsor. Anais Borges, Jacqueline Klooster Scholarship winner is

the Minor Chords definitely enjoyed
performing it. The performance was
enhanced by two of the youth members
being in the 2013 Harmony Queens
quartet, Spot On, as they were brought
out of the chorus, at the end of the song,
during the performance after the chorus
contest. Trinda brought her dedication
a n d e n t h u s i a s m f o r H a r m o n y,
Incorporated to the rehearsals and
showed the youth just how important
they are to this organization.
In addition to the Minor Chords
performances, at the Opening
Ceremonies each year, we have the
pleasure of awarding the Jacqueline
Klooster Minor Chords Scholarship to
a youth member, to help them travel
to the International Convention and
Contest, and to sing with the Minor
Chords. The 2013 recipient of the
Jacqueline Klooster Minor Chords
Scholarship was Anais Borges, member
of The Over Tones, Inc, from Guelph,
ON. Congratulations, Anais.
The 2013 Minor Chords had such
a wonderful time in Windsor, ON,
and would like to thank everyone for
their support over the years. There
are some changes brewing within the
Minor Chords, and the youth members
are excited for future conventions. ■

Harmony Queens Travel Fund
What is the Harmony Queens Travel Fund? So glad
you asked!
The Harmony Queens Travel Fund consists of money
raised each year by the Association of Harmony Queens
at the annual Parade of Champions at IC&C. This
money is raised for your benefit and we hope you will
take advantage of this fund.
Your chapter is eligible for up to $2000 US towards
travel and accommodation expenses when you hire a
Harmony Queens quartet to appear on your show.
Each Area is eligible for up to $500 US towards
expenses of a Queen’s quartet serving on the staff at
your Area Education event or AC&C.

Q & A With Spot On
1. Do you have any other
hobbies besides singing?
• Maggie: I also dance, act, play the
trumpet, sculpt, and paint.
• Jen: Mostly, I spend my time
studying, reading, and taking pictures.
I also like to spend as much time with
my family and friends as possible.
• Joy: I didn’t know barbershoppers
were allowed to have other hobbies…
• Kris: Besides SINGING?? Not
much! I work in a nursery and love
spending time with those babies. I try
to get in a run 4-5 times a week. Besides
barbershop singing, I also sing in a new
pop a cappella ensemble called Cardinal
Rule at the University of Louisville.
2. What is your favourite
colour; your favourite
food; your favourite piece
of clothing?
• Maggie: My favorite colors are
purple and blue. I can’t decide on one
or the other! I love the bright jewel
tone colors and always have. Also,
one of my school colors is purple, so
that has been a nice added bonus! My
favorite foods are steak and mac &
cheese. My favorite piece of clothing is
definitely my pair of rhinestoned gold
and purple tap shoes. I’ve been a dancer

since I was three, I’m in a rhythm tap
company, and tap has always been my
favorite style. I got to design the shoes
myself, and they’re perfectly heavy in
the sole but still shiny and glitzy at the
same time. And they make really clear
tap sounds, which I live for!
• Jen: It’s difficult to describe my
favorite color. It’s kind of half-way
between royal blue and navy blue. It’s
deep, rich, and vibrant all at the same
time. I don’t really have a favorite type
of food…but one of my super downfalls
is any kind of bread. Ugh. My favorite
clothes are all centered on comfort. I
love fleece, for example…in the winter,
at least. Workout pants are awesome…
stretchy. I also like shiny things.
• Joy: My favorite color is green
because it reminds me of nature, and
it is also the signature color for my
Dad’s chorus, The Southern Gateway
Chorus. I can’t say that I actually have
a favorite food, but I am a vegetarian,
and I love exploring new recipes! And
of course, my favorite piece of clothing
is anything with spots on it!!! I have so
many things that fit into that category!
• Kris: I don’t have one favorite
color; I really like most shades of blues,
greens, purples and pinks. My favorite
foods include pizza, Mexican and
Italian foods, oh and sweets! Almost
any sweet will make me happy, which
is why I feel the need to run 4-5 times
a week! My favorite piece of clothing
is a good pair of jeans. Although, yoga
pants and a t-shirt is a great outfit for
lounging around!
3. What are you most
looking forward to doing
during your reigning year?
• Maggie: I am excited to just let
it sink in! It has been an unexpected
and fantastic whirlwind! I’m looking
forward to singing on shows, meeting
more Harmony women, and crowning
the new champs later this year!
• Jen: I don’t think there is a “most
looking forward to” for me. There are
lots of things, but the higher ones on
the list include spending time with my
Harmony, Inc friends, and meeting
new people. I am also looking forward
to watching my girls experience all the
wonders of being Queens.
• Joy: I am most looking forward to
doing shows and getting to know the
women of Harmony, Inc!
• Kris: At this point, I sound like a
broken record, but I’m most looking
forward to spending a week in Louisville,
and receiving my permanent crown
while you’re here is the icing on top!
4. How did you decide
on your name; your
theme (spots); and your
costumes?
We are totally giving this credit to
Kris. Apparently, Drew’s former baritone
(remember, Drew is Kris’s husband and
Jen’s brother) heard the phrase “spot on”
on TV, and said “that would be a good
quartet name”, so Kris wrote it down. A
few months later, she suggested it to the
quartet, along with MANY other name
choices, and we all agreed that we liked
it best. The theme was pretty obvious
to us once we chose the name, but we
think it was, again, mostly Kris who
came up with the spotted clothing idea.
The spotted theme soon followed as
we each would impulsively buy spotted
accessories and clothes for the sake of
buying spotted things! Our spotted
costumes seemed to be the logical next
step, which made picking them out from
a more focused pool of options easier.
5. What is the funniest thing
that happened to you at
IC&C in Windsor?
• Maggie: Joy, her boyfriend Matt,
my brother Patrick, and I were hanging
out together after the contest on Friday.
Joy’s back was a little achy, and she asked
Matt if he’d rub her back. He said no,
so Joy said, in a fantastically adorable
voice, “but I’m a QEEEEEEN!” To
that, Matt said, “Okay, I’ll do it … but
otherwise you would just say ‘but I didn’t
WIIIIN!’” Joy laughed, shrugged, and
said, “Yeah, you’re probably right…”
Patrick and I looked at each other and
laughed. A LOT. It was perfect!
• Jen: I, honestly, can’t remember
Spot On get sassy in the semi-finals!
a specific funny thing. There were
so many wonderful moments. The
quartet, VVCs, and all my friends and
family laughed a lot during that week.
It was just a great time.
• Joy: I think the photo shoot with
Betsy was pretty hilarious. We were
freezing and had to walk all around
outside in our dresses and heels in the
wet grass! It was so much fun!
• Kris: Hmmm, seeing three of my
best friends with crowns on their heads!
It caught me by surprise every time!
6. What is the one piece of
advice that you would give
someone who wanted to
be a Queen?
• Maggie: Immerse yourself in
barbershop. Go to all the barbershop
conventions you can and listen to
barbershop as much as possible. I feel
like I learn so much about the barbershop
craft each time I go to a convention.
• Jen: Learn ALL the time!! No
matter how much you think you know,
you can always learn more. Listen
to coaches, chorus-mates, directors,
audience members, quartet-mates…
everyone. Though you many not think
about it at the time, chances are that
one little piece of knowledge will pop
into your head sometime and it will
make sense or help with a current
problem. Listen and Learn!!
• Joy: Practice, practice, practice!
And remember: Practice does not make
perfect! Practice makes permanent!
Perfect practice makes perfect. So talk
to your coaches, chorus directors, and
barbershop role models and soak up as
much knowledge as you can!
• Kris: Do your homework, learn the
basics and work on music outside of
rehearsal. Since we are a long-distance
quartet, and getting together is a rare
occurrence for rehearsals, that is what
we had to do. Also, singing with people
whose company you enjoy makes a
huge difference. After all, this is a
“hobby”, what’s the point if you’re not
having fun?

• Maggie: I get asked this a lot – I’m
not the youngest Harmony Queen…

• Jen: Harmony, Inc, knows a lot
about me, already…but what they might
not know is that I have just finished a
Clinical Massage Therapy diploma, and
am now at Columbia College Chicago
for a BA in American Sign LanguageEnglish Interpretation. You are correct…
no connection between the two.
• Joy: One thing that I find to be a
bit silly about me is that I strive to be
the “grammar police”, as some would
say. However, I love to abbreviate
words and speak like a teenage girl. For
example, “Spot On is totes magotes my
fave quartet ever. We’re all besties and
I supes appreesh everything they do for
me! Sometimes I get supes emosh and
make people feel totes awk when I talk
about how much I love them!!” Maggie
(I call her Magnadoodle) brings out the
“abreevs” in me, and sometimes I can’t
stop myself, even though I know it’s
incredibly annoying to other people! J
• Kris: “Crying is my go-to
emotion,” which is a running joke
with the quartet. Whether I am sad,
proud, scared, or super happy, you will
probably find me crying.
