New Partnership Models Between NOC, IOC, and Service
Companies: Keys to Success

In a world where the NOC share of the industry is growing – forecast by the IEA to be more than 60% in production terms by 2030 – our
industry is finding new ways to act with and for resource holders in partnership: working within the grain of national agendas, addressing NOC
needs in different ways, delivering services without ‘taking ownership’ of the reserves, and bringing the local supply chain and people along
too. The roles of the traditional players are changing. IOCs are increasingly moving out into the high technology space of unconventional, GTL,
FLNG plays and into new and challenging geographies.
Service companies are taking on greater risk and offer increasingly innovative commercial models. These changes also include an evolving
approach to partnering: IOCs are partnering with NOCs in new geographies and addressing local agendas in ever new and creative ways,
service companies are looking to partner with NOCs and are also partnering with other service companies to expand what they can offer, and
agreements are evolving with local oil and gas companies to align with the national agenda and enable capability growth.
Recognising the emerging capability challenge is key – that the limiting factor in our industry is not technology itself, but the capability, skill
and experience to deploy technology to deliver projects on time and within budget.
The capability gap, coupled with the reality of our maturing sector, is a huge challenge for the industry but also an opportunity. To be successful
requires a willingness to accept change, to manage risks in different ways, to adopt different commercial models and consider different ways of
partnering between NOC, IOC and service companies.

As drilling activity ramps up in East Africa, long-awaited deals are sealed, and oil companies scramble to get a slice of what could be an energy
goldmine. Significant gas reserves have already been found in Mozambique and Tanzania, where LNG facilities are now been planned. Drilling
will kick off in Ethiopia later this year, while Madagascar is believed to hold significant reserves of gas and the Puntland region of Somalia is also
showing positive signs. Tullow has made agreements with the Uganda government for the development of a number of oil-rich blocks, and has
also made Kenya’s first major oil discovery.
This session will discuss how recent discoveries have increased the prospects of the region. It will also discuss operational, commercial, and
geopolitical challenges and the regulatory and infrastructure gaps that could hinder the transition from gas exploration to production in the
medium term. It will also touch on the global implications of these East Africa developments.

The Conference Dinner will include the presentation of the 7th IPTC Excellence in Project Integration Award winner.
The Excellence in Project Integration Award is given to a project that adds value to a company, whether an NOC or IOC, through the entire
process and value chain and exemplifies strong teamwork, solid geoscience knowledge, reservoir and production engineering acumen,
determined and watchful construction, and outstanding facilities engineering practices. Equally important, successful projects require a
pervasive culture of HSE. The project must have had a positive impact on the country, the region or the world.
The awards committee consists of 10 members, including four (4) IPTC board members and six (6) industry leaders that possess strong technical
reputations and are in a position to be independent from various pressures.

Manifa – Working with Nature, Saudi Aramco
The Manifa Project is considered Saudi Aramco’s flagship achievement for 2012 in terms of the company’s commitment to both its production
capacity and environmental stewardship. This mega-project is located in a coastal and ecologically sensitive area that includes a productive
shrimping and fishing zone. Our efforts earned a UNESCO Environmental Responsibility Award nomination.
The Manifa Project went into service in April 2013 and will reach its production capacity of 900,000 barrels per day of Arabian heavy crude,
with 90 million cubic feet of associated gas, and 65,000 barrels per day of condensate, by the end of 2013. Highlighting this project’s major
accomplishments was the construction of over 41 kilometers of offshore causeways for drill sites, three kilometers of bridges for field access,
27 drilling islands and 13 offshore platforms. Further, there is a 420-megawatt high-efficiency cogeneration plant for waste heat recycling and
energy reuse.

Pearl GTL is the world’s largest Gas-to-Liquids plant and represents one of the world’s largest, most complex and challenging energy projects
ever commissioned. From the origins of the Shell GTL technology nearly 40 years ago to the creation of the world’s GTL capital in Qatar today,
the delivery of a GTL project on such a vast scale as Pearl GTL is an example of a uniquely integrated development. It captures in one project an
extended gas value chain starting from offshore subsurface development, through onshore gas processing to natural gas, to the conversion
of natural gas to hydrocarbon liquids, to the refining to finished products and storage, and finally to the dispatching and worldwide marketing
of unique GTL products. Pearl GTL has incorporated some truly innovative technologies and created value locally as well as globally. It has also
demonstrated excellence in project implementation and, above all, was delivered while achieving a record breaking HSE performance.
PERDIDO - Shell
Perdido is the world’s deepest offshore oil drilling and production platform. Moored in 2,450 metres (8,000 feet) of water in the Gulf of Mexico, it
opened up a new frontier in deep-water oil and gas production.
The Perdido project is a spar-based development of three ultra-deepwater fields in the remote southwestern part of the Gulf of Mexico. At the
time of the fields’ discovery in 2002-04, their safe and economic development was thought to be close to impossible. Extreme water depth,
rugged seafloor terrain, low-pressure reservoirs, and well fluids with an aggressive hydrate-formation tendency – all conspired to make it a
daunting challenge.
But the Perdido project team did make happen. It required integrating a series of technology firsts across a range of disciplines. And in so doing,
several world records were set: deepest drilling and production platform; deepest subsea completion; deepest undersea pipeline connection.
The Perdido spar has a peak daily production capacity of 100,000 barrels of oil and 200 million cubic feet of gas. Shell has a 35% interest in the
platform and is the operator.

Erkan Karakaya is Commercial Manager of Schlumberger Production Management. Before assuming this role Erkan worked
as Middle East General Manager of Petroleum Economics Solutions Business where he provided planning, economics
and corporate risk assessment solutions to regional oil companies many of which are key OPEC producers. Prior to that
Erkan worked for Petronas at various positions, his responsibilities included upstream M&AD, portfolio management and
corporate strategy development. He is specialized in upstream asset valuation, multi-disciplinary upstream project risk
assessment and he is a recognized Schlumberger domain leader in decision analysis and risk management.
Knut Olsen-Principal Industry Specialist, World Bank
Knut Evjen Olsen is a Norwegian citizen working as a Principal Industry Specialist in the Oil & Gas Division of the
International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group in Washington, DC. During his 32 years in
the petroleum industry he has also worked for Shell, Norsk Hydro (now Statoil) and Saudi Aramco in both technical and
managerial positions, and has always had a keen interest in the practical application of economic theory in the industry.
John O. H. Griffith-Senior Advisor, Gaffney Cline & Associates
A Senior Petroleum Economist with over 30 years’ industry experience and an extensive background in the valuation
and evaluation of petroleum projects worldwide. John graduated from the University of the West Indies with a BA in
economics and after a relatively short career as a systems engineer with International Computers Limited, he joined Gaffney
Cline & Associates’ Trinidad office in 1979. John has lead the development and presentation of a number of petroleum
economics and asset evaluation training courses for private and national oil companies. John has considerable expertise in
international petroleum fiscal systems and has been responsible for the design and development of a range of propriety
economic evaluation software used by GCA
Kara Shepherd-Exploration Business Planning Manager, PDO
Kara Shepherd is the Exploration Business Planning Manager for Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), in the Sultanate of
Oman. She is responsible for business planning, E&A strategy, portfolio management, performance management, financial
management, external liaison, and competitive intelligence. Kara has previously worked as a Petroleum Engineer in Oman,
Brunei, Sakhalin, and the Netherlands, through secondments from Shell. She has worked with a wide variety of reservoirs,
alongside conventional, EOR and unconventional opportunities, onshore and offshore.
Larry Chorn-Partner, Unconventional Resources, Halliburton
Larry Chorn joined Halliburton Global Consulting in December, 2012 as Partner, Unconventional Resources. He designs,
manages and delivers consulting engagements in shale, tight gas and CBM assets worldwide. His 35-year career in the
upstream oil and gas business has ranged from pure technical to strategic roles with corporations ranging in size from Mobil
Oil to Newfield Exploration. He earned a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois and an MBA in strategy
and finance at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX.

Dr. Shawket Ghedan is currently a Reservoir Simulation Engineering Advisor with CMG. He has got more
than 22 years of both academic and industrial experience in the area of reservoir engineering, management
and modeling. In the past, he held associate professor positions with the Petroleum Institute and University
of Baghdad. He also held the position of senior reservoir simulation engineering with ADNOC and ADMA.
Furthermore, he was senior instructor and consultant with NExT-Schlumberger. Shawket’s expertise
encompasses reservoir characterization, and reservoir modeling of waterflooding, carbonate fractured
reservoirs, CO2-compositional flooding, chemical flooding, thermal oil recovery, and recovery from
unconventional tight formations. Shawket has authored more than 40 technical papers, and has taught
many reservoir engineering and reservoir modelling courses world-wide. He holds BSc degree in Petroleum
Engineering from University of Baghdad, ME and PhD degrees in Reservoir Engineering from Colorado School
of Mines. Shawket is currently involved in a number of SPE international activities. He was SPE distinguished
lecturer for 2005-2006. He was awarded the 2009 MENA regional reservoir description and dynamics technical
award, 2010 SPE outstanding technical editor award, and 2011 MENA regional distinguished petroleum
engineering faculty award.

The course starts by covering the geological aspects of carbonate fractured reservoirs, NFRs, in terms of matrix and fractures characterization
and determination of its intrinsic and effective properties needed for reservoir modeling. It then continues to explore the recovery mechanism
of naturally fractured reservoirs and its difference than those of conventional oil reservoirs. Further, the course presents the concepts of
Wettability, Pc and Kr curves and their importance in the recovery mechanisms of naturally fractured reservoirs. Modeling approaches will
differ based on the types of the Carbonate NFR, and the oil recovery processes encountered during primary, secondary and tertiary recovery
techniques. The course explains the modelling approaches of Standard Dual Porosity, Dual Porosity with Multiple Interacting Continua, Dual
Porosity with Vertical Refinement, Dual Permeability, and finally Dual Permeability with Vertical Refinement. Further, the course explores the
various matrix-fracture transfer function and the related shape factors. Finally the course would shed light on the topic of thermal recovery from
Carbonate Naturally Fractured Reservoirs which is taking a lot of attention lately.

In recent years, the use of geostatistics has spread from the world of reservoir characterization to that of the velocity analysis, time-to-depth
conversion, seismic inversion, uncertainty quantification and more generally to that of seismic data integration in earth models. Nevertheless,
many geoscientists still regard geostatistics as little more than a statistical black-box. By explaining the concepts and applications, the goal of
this course is to clarify the benefits of geostatistics and help spread its use.
The course will cover the use of geostatistics for interpolation (kriging…), heterogeneity modeling, uncertainty quantification (simulation…),
and data integration (cokriging, external drift, geostatistical inversion…). A variety of applications and examples will be presented, including
velocity mapping, time-to-depth conversion, heterogeneity modeling and seismic data integration in stochastic earth models. The relationships
between geostatistics and approaches more familiar to geophysicists, such as filtering or Bayesian methods, will also be discussed, without
entering into mathematical details. A number of case studies will be presented, covering examples from various parts of the world. This will be a
lively course, illustrated by examples, exercises and discussion sessions.

Dr. Olivier Dubrule obtained a PhD degree in Petroleum Geostatistics with Prof Matheron (the father of
geostatistics) at Ecole des Mines de Paris in 1981. He then worked for Sohio Petroleum Company in the
USA (1982-1986), Shell International in the Netherlands (1986-1991); since 1991, he has been with Elf and
Total, working in France, the UK and Qatar. During his career, he has held a variety of staff and management
positions, where he has developed and applied new techniques for reservoir characterization, earth
modeling, and uncertainty quantification. Dr. Dubrule is now VP, Geosciences Training and Technical Image
at Total in Pau (France). He is a former President of EAGE. Dr. Dubrule has authored more than twenty
papers in the field of geostatistics and earth modeling. In 1991, he received the President’s prize of the
International Association of Mathematical Geology, for “Outstanding Contribution to Mathematical Geology
by an individual 35 years or younger”. In the last three decades, he organized and chaired a number of
events organized by SPE, EAGE, SEG or AAPG. Dr Dubrule is the author of AAPG Course Noted Series #38
“Geostatistics in Petroleum Geology”, and editor (with E. Damsleth) of “Petroleum Geostatistics” as Special
Issue of EAGE’s Petroleum Geoscience Journal, published in 2001. The course “Geostatistics for Seismic Data
Integration in Earth Models” was the 2003 SEG/EAGE Distinguished Instructor Short Course. The course book
has been translated in Russian and Farsi.

Three-dimensional numerical earth models play an increasingly important role in the E&P industry to improve reservoir management and
optimise hydrocarbon recovery. A key challenge for reservoir geophysicists is the quantitative integration of 3-D and 4-D seismic data in static
and dynamic earth modelling workflows. Using a combination of theory and illustrations based on a broad range of case studies, the one-day
course will review current best practices and future challenges for constraining earth models with seismic information. Emphasis will be placed
on seismic data integration in the context of seismic-to-simulator workflows. Topics covered include the construction of stratigraphic grids
from interpreted seismic horizons and faults, deterministic and stochastic elastic inversion, cascaded petrophysical inversion, use of seismic
geostatistics and rock physics to predict reservoir properties such as lithology and pore fluids, uncertainty propagation techniques, building of
geomechanical earth models for seismic Pp prediction, and 4-D earth models generation for seismic monitoring applications.

Philippe Doyen received a PhD in Geophysics from Stanford University in 1987. He then worked in reservoir
geophysics R&D for Western Geophysical in Houston and London until the end of 2001. In 2002, after the
merger between Western and Geco-Prakla, he was transferred to Schlumberger and appointed Research
Director for Schlumberger Information Solutions. He joined CGG in October 2003. He is currently Vice
President R&D and is based in London.

Dr. Doyen has over twenty years R&D experience in reservoir geophysics, geostatistics, earth modelling and
rock physics. He has developed a number of geostatistical techniques for seismic-guided rock property
prediction, stochastic reservoir modelling and subsurface uncertainty quantification and holds four U.S.
patents. He has managed the development of several software products for geostatistical earth modelling
from seismic data, seismic inversion and data visualisation. He has a broad experience in geo-technical
consulting and seismic reservoir characterisation projects management. He served as EAGE Distinguished
Lecturer in 1998 and was selected as distinguished lecturer for the EAGE Education Tour (EET) in 2007. His
one day lecture on “seismic reservoir characterisation – an earth modeling perspective” has been given at
more than 30 locations, worldwide. Doyen is on the Board of Directors of the IPTC where he represents the
SEG. He is a Fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation.

Dr. Sunil Kokal is a Senior Petroleum Engineering Consultant and a Focus Area Champion of Enhanced Oil Recovery in
the Reservoir Engineering Technology team of EXPEC Advanced Research Center at Saudi Aramco in Dhahran, Saudi
Arabia. He joined Saudi Aramco in April, 1993. Since joining Aramco, he has been involved in applied research projects
on enhanced/improved oil recovery, reservoir fluids, hydrocarbon phase behaviour, heavy oil, and production related
challenges. Currently he is leading a group of scientists, engineers and technicians to develop a program for enhanced oil
recovery and to conduct appropriate studies and field EOR demonstration projects. The main driver for his research is to
increase the ultimate oil recovery from 50 to 70% and add billions of barrels of reserves.

for the Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, an Elsevier international journal. He is also an Associate Editor of
the SPE Reservoir Evaluation and Engineering Journal, and earlier served on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of
Canadian Petroleum Technology. He has been a keynote speaker, helped organize several petroleum engineering related
conferences and symposia, and taught courses on enhanced oil recovery, reservoir fluid properties and other related
topics. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and is a registered professional engineer and a member of
the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (Canada).
Dr. Kokal is the recipient of the prestigious 2012 SPE DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal, 2011 SPE Distinguished
Service Award, the 2010 SPE Regional Technical award for Reservoir Description & Dynamics, the 2008 SPE Distinguished
Member Award for his services to the society. He also served as a SPE Distinguished Lecturer during 2007-2008. He has
received several other awards including best paper awards by the Canadian Petroleum Society, outstanding Technical
Editor award, and several internal company awards for publications, service, teamwork, and technical contributions. He has
mentored several young professionals both at Saudi Aramco and for the SPE.
Prior to joining Saudi Aramco, Dr. Kokal worked at the Petroleum Recovery Institute (PRI), Calgary, Canada. Dr. Kokal holds
a Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary, Canada (1987) and a B.S. degree in Chemical
Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi (1982).

Since 2010, Dr. Salem Aljuhani has been an associate professor of Geophysics in the Petroleum
Engineering Program at Texas A&M University at Qatar. He has taught several courses in geophysics,
geology and petroleum engineering. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in
1999, an MS. from the University of Southern California in 1992, and a BS. from King Fahd University
of Petroleum and Minerals in 1989. He worked for Saudi Aramco as geophysicist in different
geophysical and exploration departments until 2007 when he was assigned to King Abdullah
University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Dr. Aljuhani main interest is quantitative geophysical
data analysis and interpretation, and reservoir characterisation.
Professor Vassilios C. Kelessidis has worked for over 9 years with different Schlumberger companies
in Houston, France and England. He then joined Technical University of Crete, teaching drilling
engineering and drilling hydraulics. Since August 2012 he assumed the position of Program Chair
and Professor at Petroleum Engineering program at Texas A&M University at Qatar. He teaches
and performing research on drilling engineering, establishing a Drilling Hydraulics, Drilling Fluid
and Drilling Engineering laboratory which will excel in research on fluid mechanics, hydraulics
and cuttings transport capacity of drilling fluids, on drilling fluid development and drilling fluid
rheology and on formation damage by drilling fluids, on optimization of drilling process, on rock-bit
interaction. He develops rheological models and have developed techniques for improving but also
understanding rheological measurements. Dr. Kelessidis has over 75 publications in refereed journals
and conferences, and more than 440 citations with an h-index of 12. He is the co-author of Chapter
5 - Drilling Hydraulics in the newly published ‘Fundamentals of Drilling Engineering’ edited by: R.F.
Mitchell and S.Z. Miska, 2011, 710 pp.; SPE Textbook Series No. 12. He is a reviewer in more than 20
scientific journals. He has a PhD from University of Houston, a M.Sc. from Oregon State University and
a Diploma from Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki Greece, all in Chemical Engineering.
Dr. Albertus Retnanto is an Associate Professor of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University at
Qatar. Dr. Retnanto has authored and co-authored over 30 papers. He served as Review Chairman
SPE Drilling & Completion, member of SPE Cedric K. Ferguson Medal Award Committee, member
of SPE Drilling and Completion Advisory Committee and currently serves as Technical Editor SPE.
He received A Peer Apart SPE Award, dedication to technical excellence to authors, to SPE, and to
the industry in volunteering time and expertise to review 100 or more technical papers. He is also
Principal Engineer with Schlumberger Oilfield Services with more than 16 years experiences both
in technical and management positions worldwide in the area of field development, production
enhancement, stimulation, and new technology introduction to the field. He holds a BS degree from
the Bandung Inst. of Technology, Bandung, Indonesia, and MS and PhD degrees from Texas A&M, all

Young Members Activities
19–22 JAN 2014
Education Week: 18–22 January 2014
Education Week entitled “Energy Challenges + Education = Our Future” includes a five-day programme for the
best undergraduate geosciences and engineering students from international educational institutions. More than
80 students from across the globe and 20 students based in Qatar have been selected to participate in the highly
anticipated student programme. We thank the sponsors of this programme, who have supported the travel and
accommodation expenses incurred by attendees. The purpose of this programme is to give the participating
students a clear insight into the oil and gas industry, to let them work together on a technical project, and provide
them the the opportunity to develop friendships with like-minded young engineers from around the world. We
also hope the programme will see them to return to their universities and colleges with a positive story about
careers in oil and gas, which they will relay to their fellow students.
Teachers’ Workshop: 19 January 2014
The Teachers’ workshop is entitled “Education Energising the Future”, it will be focused on helping teachers
educate in the essential scientific concepts related to oil and gas. The workshop session will ensure that educators
receive comprehensive and objective information that can then be incorporated into their students’ education. A
variety of free instructional materials will be available to take back to the classroom.
EnergyBee: 20 January 2014
EnergyBee is a competition between the selected students groups, consisting of 6-8 members per team. The
participants’ depth and breadth of knowledge on the subjects of energy, petroleum, geoscience and related
sciences will be tested. First, second and third place winners will be announced during the IPTC Closing Ceremony.
Education Day: 21–22 January 2014
Education Day entitled “Energy 4All” is an initiative to introduce students to the disciplines of petroleum
engineering, and the industry in general. Targeted at high school students, grade 10 to grade 12, invited industry
professionals will share their experience with students and deliver talks on topics of general interest and of specific
relevance to the industry. The students will be given free access to the exhibition area during IPTC. They will be
able to see, first-hand, the latest technologies utilised by engineers in this field, including the state-of-the-art

software used for solving complicated engineering problems. It is hoped that they will leave the conference with a
better understanding of what petroleum engineers do and their role in the broader community. Equally important,
they will also become aware that a petroleum engineering career is full of exciting challenges, teamwork, and
major responsibilities.
Future Engineers’ Parents Dinner: 21 January 2014
This event is designed to make parents aware of the opportunities available in engineering, geosciences and
science higher education in oil and gas. This inspirational evening seeks to give a complete understanding of the
exciting employment prospects in these fields. The dinner will encourage their children to enroll in education that
could help them launch a successful career in oil and gas. We will also discuss the impact that choosing a career
within these disciplines could make on the continuous growth of the region, and the contribution they could
make to global development by meeting the challenges presented by growing energy demand.
High School Project Competition: 22 January 2014
The competition’s objective is to showcase student’s ingenuity and resourcefulness in presenting Science and
Energy related projects. Schools can submit an experimental/investigatory project, technology/engineering
project or display project wherein students can construct a model to show a visual representation of their work.
International Young Professionals Competition: 21 January
•“The World Energy…Gate to the Future” Young Professionals Paper Competition was open to all Young
Professionals in the international oil and gas community. Young Professionals submitted a 350-word abstract and
if selected were invited to write an extended abstract (2000–4000 words).
•PowerPoint and poster presentations were created from the selected abstracts and will be displayed at the Youth
Pavilion in Hall 3. Winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd) will be selected from both the PowerPoint presentations and the posters.
Winners will be awarded at the IPTC closing ceremony.
