A programme that went to air utilising Radio 5UV’s frequency on Wednesday 5th March 1975 was the NBO”s first and Ethnic Broadcasters’ second. An Italian programme had been aired two days earlier, and Ukrainian, Greek and Polish programmes quickly followed. Those five groups were our station’s founding members. The first broadcast of The Dutch Family Programme was presented by Paul Kokke, founder of 5EBI and NBO and for more than 30 years, NBO’s Manager-Producer. It wasn’t long before Paul sought the involvement of one of his countrymen, Walter de Veer, and that proved an enduring partnership. Walter de Veer AM MBE became Chairman of Ethnic Broadcaster in that first year and held the position until his death in 1984. The NBO grew in tandem with the popularity of the Dutch programmes. Wim Georg and Henk de Prinse soon got involved. Other early collaborators included Hetty Boone, Maaike Jongepier (pictured on the cover), Henk de Weerd, Henk Hollander, Yvonne van Barneveld and Yvette de Minck Jansen to name but a few. Gerry Paulus took over from Paul Kokke as Manager-Producer and is now the longest serving NBO Committtee Member. 2015 Dutch Family Programme Presenters (from left):, Jan van de Belt, Gerry Paulus and Johan de Rooy. Teamwork and cooperation of the NBO fraternity and all other EBI members guided by Walter de Veer contributed to the harmony of our society. At its high point NBO was broadcasting live for 10 hours a week. It currently broadcasts for four. The Dutch Family Programme remains an audience favourite and is a three hour broadcast on Thursday evenings. Over the years NBO has hosted numerous Dutch celebrities such as tennis players Betty Stove, Richard Krajecek and Huub van Boekel, singer Heintje, Dutch Swing College Band, a Dutch Navy Crew, Ambassadors, politicians and more. A lawyer and enthusiastic supporter of Dutch radio, Willem Ouwens provided professional advice at the time the NBO was incorporated. Mr Owens has been NBO’s Patron since his appointment in 1982 as Honorary Consul, Kingdom of the Netherlands, for South Australia. Such has been the effectiveness of Paul Kokke’s efforts to keep Dutch culture alive and to share it with the broader South Australian community, that Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands made Paul Kokke a Member of the Order of the Knights of the House of Orange. This prestigious award recognises Paul’s outstanding contribution to the local Dutch community. The NBO itself has recognised the long-term contributions of Paul Kokke, Walter de Veer, Hetty Boone and Henk de Prinse by awarding them Life Membership. Life Membership of EBI was also bestowed on Paul and Walter. Today’s NBO Presenters are John van de Belt, Gerry Paulus, Johan de Rooy, Trudy Tuft and mother-daughter team Pinky and Emily. To hear them in action tune in: Thursdays9:00pm-Midnight Fridays5:00-6:00pm. This event will be a celebration of both our cultural similarities and our differences. Cristina Descalzi CHAIRPERSON’S MESSAGE The end of another year is fast approaching, as too is the Stations 40th birthday celebrations. A rich ethnic mix is key feature of the Australian community in the 21st Centrury. The participating radio stations will be 5EBI, 3ZZZ (Melbourne), 2000 (Sydney), 4EB (Brisbane) and 6EBA (Perth) and all are excited to be highlighting the diversity of their broadcasters cultures. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our member groups, their individual members and our broad community of listeners, who supported this year’s Radiothon. Indications are that monies will be up on last year. Each station will provide two hours of programme content covering topics such as: • Station History • The community groups that broadcast with them • The different cultures and languages of their members • Their people. Pledges can be paid through the Station’s website 5ebi.com.au and in fact, donations can now be made online at any time throughout the year. The remaining two hours will be a compilitation involving each of the participating stations with interviews, news and World Music. The Strategic Planning Committee in conjunction with the Executive, has this year been looking at a structure for the station’s future. The goal is to position 5EBI to be more self-sufficient and less reliant on Government funding. We are Family! will provide an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of multicultural radio. 5EBI welcomes the involvement of its member broadcasting groups in preparing for this special event. You are also encouraged to raise awareness of the day amongst your friends, colleagues and associates in the wider community. The more who tune in, the better. Contact 5EBI Station Manager Kym Green on 8211 7635 to learn how your group can join in on the day. • At a time when all community stations are struggling with funding issues and the challenges of working with an ageing population, A detailed plan is due to be put to 5EBI members at the close of the first quarter next year, In addition to this vital planning, in 2016 we will continue our focus on encouraging new Ethnic groups to join the Station as well as encouraging new young broadcasters to become involved. A big thank you to everyone for your continued support, loyalty, commitment and dedication to 5EBI 103.1fm – Australia’s first multicultural community radio station. With the hard work from the whole, big team, citizens are very lucky to be able to enjoy the radio programmes which are broadcast in more than 40 languages. It is hoped that there will be more and more ethnic groups joining 5EBI’s big family, so more and more people in Adelaide can maintain their culture through the channel 103.1fm. Before stepping into the radio station, I saw a brilliant painting outside the building. It reminds us that there are so many ethnic communities in the world and we should respect each of the cultures. Teamwork is the main point I learnt from this volunteer placement. When I started to guess which artist did this pretty and meaningful 4 3 As a girl from Hong Kong going to Adelaide to study an English course in the University of Adelaide, I am very delighted to participate in this volunteer placement. 2 I would like to thank every one in the radio who gave me valuable lessons relating to the operation of 5EBI. Traders from the Grote Business Precinct and the Gouger Street Traders have combined forces to produce this stunning gift wrap which is being given away to loyal customers or, in our case, to volunteer broadcasters and listeners. The striking design features a collage of 31 colour and black and white photographs of landmarks, events and people going about their daily business in the south western area of the CBD from the mid-1800s to the present day. There’s even a photo, taken by our own Henk de Weerd, of the colourful mural on 5EBI’s front wall! The wrapping paper design is proving a real conversation piece with Adelaideans and is sure to intrigue anyone interstate or overseas who is lucky enough to receive a gift wrapped in it. The images were drawn from the archives of the State Library of 5EBI Station Manage Kym Green (right) and Rotary Adelaide West member Bill Marles checked out the Market Quarter gift wrapping paper prior to its distribution for local traders to give to their customers. Captain commanded engine room crew to slow in English, the language of the sea, as we headed for a berth at frightening speed. “Speak Greek,” I screamed. Stricken with fear of flying, I embarked on my traveller’s life by ship. In 46 years of gliding along gorgeous rivers and sailing seas in small ocean-going ships initially, (to monstrous, floating skyscrapers), only three of 39 vessels on which I’ve been a passenger have met an unfortuitous end. I’d left the Angelina Lauro when, sadly, it sank,on fire in Kingston, Jamaica, having sailed me safely to Europe for my first exploration abroad a year before. We crashed into a wharf, scattering tyre buffers, ground crew and spectators. Regaining composure, Captain confessed when waves settled. His only crew was a teenage boy who spoke no English and we were the only cargo.. “But, please, dear madam and family, stay on board for my next voyage.” I had to decline. Myrtidiosida, a World War l Corvette carried me and my car, requiring help from cranes at Pireaus and thenunknown villagers with ladders and ropes at the Greek island of Kythera. Her service ceased after my many months on the island. Setting off slowly, she slipped gently into shallows till sea submerged the main deck – and my fishermen friends rescued all unable to wade ashore. A Greek ship owner graciously gave me, my late husband and baby return passage in his suite on board Kyria Gallica (French Lady,) a liner converted to a car ferry between Piraeus and Corfu. Although verdigris in the bath gleamed green, we were grateful. As we awaited Corfu departure, French Lady, without coquetry, appeared on the horizon, to slide, like Myrtidiosida beneath the sea’s surface. Fishermen became heroes again. Later, in Piraeus, another similarlyconverted liner prepared to ply towards Greece’s largest island, Crete. A boilersuited man appeared with a wrench to fix a fridge-fault in our suite. Another in a butler’s uniform arrived with a written invitation to join the captain for dinner. A third, in chef’s garb with hat, welcomed us to his quarters, serving drinks and appetisers. The last was the captain, immaculately uniformed, a quick-change artist. The four men were one. He was a top cook. Crete conquered, we returned, wined and dined again and joined captain on the bridge for harbour entry to Piraeus, ebi transmission ISSUE 7 SUMMER 2015 Cruising has changed. Big as buildings, ships offer surfing, skiing, skating, wall-climbing, endless entertainment, enviable excursions ashore, finer dining, butler service and 23 million Aussies are expected to ocean-go this year. It’s anticipated river cruising on longer, sleeker vessels will attract 500,000 people per year to waterways in Europe, America’s south, Asia, including India, Burma and Cambodia, and our own Oz rivers. I’ve cruised the Murray several times, the Yangtze on the first riverboat built for foreign tourists and, 30 years later, one of China’s newest. Egypt was explored by Nile riverboat. By sea, I’ve circumnavigated continents on luxurious ships where, sometimes, I’ve never re-discovered nice, new acquaintances among thousands. Small ships reward with friendships. PS. I’ve never shot an albatross except with a camera and I think Coleridge was under opium’s influence when he created The Ancient Mariner. • Tune in to Kerry Kenihan’s TRAVEL TALK during Today with You with Ewart Shaw, Tuesdays from 11am. Ingredients 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts 3 tablespoons yogurt 1 /4 tspn salt 1 /4 tspn turmeric 1 /4 tspn dry mustard 1 /2 tspn curry powder 1 /4 tspn ground cardamom 11/2 tspn lemon juice 1 tspn white vinegar 1 onion, halved and split in layers 8 cocktail tomatoes (or 8 quarters) 8 bamboo skewers 1 lemon, cut in wedges Parsley to garnish 3. Add chicken cubes and coat them well with the marinade then sit the bowl in fridge for half to three quarters of an hour. 4. Thread the chicken and onions alternately onto the skewers, positioning a tomato in the centre. 5. Grill or barbeque for 10 minutes or until chicken is cooked through, (turn once during cooking). 6. Garnish with parsley and serve with lemon wedges.
