Mr Macey, who is based in UK, is the son of the late S.C. Macey, who was the Club’s founder, benefactor and first Patron-in-Chief. During his visit, Mr David Macey bestowed upon the Club a commemorative bowl which was presented to his father during the opening of the Serangoon Garden Sports Club (old name of SGCC) in the 1950s. The bowl is an important part of our Club’s heritage and we would like to thank Mr Macey for this precious gift which came at an opportune time as we celebrate the Club’s 60th Anniversary this year. The first major event to kick-off our 60th Anniversary celebrations will be held on 2 August 2015. We will be having a family fun walk, a carnival at the Main Lobby and swimming pool area and a Music Festival. It will be a full-day event and we encourage all members to join in the fun. This event will be held in conjunction with the SG50, the nation’s jubilee celebration. As such, we will be having an Open House on that day for all to partake in this double celebration. We will be holding our 60th Anniversary Gala Dinner on 16 October 2015. This gala dinner will be a special one, as we will be raising funds for the needy and disadvantaged in the community through proceeds from the sale of dinner tickets and funds raised from the charity auction planned for the event. There will be a special edition SGCC 60th Anniversary red wine for sale at all the F&B outlets from May onwards. We also have a limited number of SGCC 60th Anniversary sets featuring a bottle of the red wine with a pair of commemorative wine glasses for sale - look out for the launch in May. We recently introduced a new daily set lunch menu at Atrium Cafe and Coffee Deli. We added new items such as crispy prawns with creamy salted egg yolk, chicken claypot rice and Thai-style chicken cutlet. We will be introducing a new a la carte menu in mid-April featuring new dishes such as Mala Spring Chicken, Braised Soy Duck with 3-Flavour Rice and Crispy Fried Sea Bass with Mango Salad. Do give our new dishes a try. Gym-goers will be pleased to know that the gym will reopen from 6pm onwards during its scheduled quarterly closure for maintenance and cleaning, instead of a full day closure. We will also be commencing waterproofing works to the roofs, including the skylight roof at the Main Lobby, to address the roof leakage problem. 2 In our sports fraternity, I would like to congratulate all recipients of the yearly Sports Awards at the recent Sports Appreciation Nite held on 20 March 2015. The award recognises outstanding sportsmen and sportswomen in the Club. This year, we have a total of 9 Merit Award winners and 1 Sustained Achievement Award winner from sports such as bowling, tennis and swimming. The Sustained Achievement Award is a new award to reward those who had won the Merit Award for 3 consecutive years and have shown consistent good achievements throughout the years. Once again, we are conducting our yearly Member Satisfaction Survey. I would like to request your support to participate in the survey as your input is important to help us improve the Club. As part of the Club’s efforts to achieve better cost savings through the reduction in postage and printing costs, we will not be sending members a copy of the survey booklet. Members are strongly encouraged to do the survey online and there will be a $5 F&B voucher reward for participants who complete the survey online. For those who prefer to use the physical survey forms, they can still request for a copy at the Main Reception. The survey is open to all members, including family members who are at least 12 years of age. In the upcoming months, you will see some changes to the design of the ClubSpirit magazine and supplement, as well as Happenings e-newsletter. Our publications will sport a more modern look and feel and we hope that you will enjoy reading them as much as before. I hope to see you at the Club soon. Yours Sincerely, RANDY SNG President REGULARS CLUB NEWS & NOTICES Member Satisfaction Survey 2015 Our annual survey is back. Have any feedback to relate to us? Email us at [email protected]. Relocation of the Bicycle Parking Area We have relocated the bicycle parking area, originally beside the Security Manager’s office, to the area opposite the Security Manager’s office. The new bicycle parking area is now bigger and can accommodate up to 17 bicycles. Streamlined Rental of Towels and Lockers Procedure Use of Skate Scooters in the Club Riding of skate scooters in the Club, especially along walkways and car parks, is extremely dangerous as accidents might occur. We would like to remind members that the use of skate scooters or skateboards is not allowed in the Club, as stated in the Club Bye-Law (Clause 7.5). If you commute to the Club using a skate scooter, you can leave your scooter at the designated scooter parking area near the Security Guardhouse before entering the Club. We have recently simplified our procedure for the rental of towels and lockers at the Gym counter. Members only need to produce their membership card and the staff will issue a charge chit for the member to sign. When returning the towels or locker keys, members must produce the charge chit or membership card for the staff to acknowledge the return. Staying in the Club after Closing Time There are instances of members staying beyond the Club’s closing time for private gatherings. We would like to highlight to members that the Club’s insurance policy does not cover any incidents that occur after the Club’s operating hours. As such, we seek members’ cooperation not to stay in the Club after closing time. Opting out of ClubSpirit Magazine Mailing List If you have been receiving multiple copies of the magazine due to multiple memberships in the household or do not wish to receive the magazine, you can opt out of the ClubSpirit magazine mailing list by informing the Membership Relations Team or email [email protected]. You may like to know that the ClubSpirit magazine can be viewed on our website (www.sgcc.com.sg/news-events/ clubspirit) and you can even refer to past issues up to 6 months ago. Children Jumping Into the Swimming Pool We have noticed that there are instances of children jumping into the pool without looking out for other swimmers. This is a very dangerous act as it might lead to unnecessary accidents. We urge parents to supervise their children when using the swimming pool. Post-dated Cheques Members are advised not to make out post-dated cheques for the purpose of payment of their statement of accounts. Post-dated cheques are not accepted by banks. If members wish to make payment on a particular future date, it would be advisable to set up a standing order or one-off automated payment using the Internet or phone banking services. Members can visit our website (www.sgcc.com.sg/membership/policies-schemes) or approach any of the Reception or Membership Relations staff for the Club’s bank account details. Alternatively, members can hand in or mail their cheques on the date they wish to date their cheques. Reciprocal Car Park Arrangement with the French School The Club has a reciprocal arrangement with the French School which allows the Club to utilize the school’s parking lots after the school’s operating hours and during weekends and public holidays when the Club is in need of additional car park space. In return, the Club accords the use of the Garden car park on weekdays during the school term for parents of the children studying at the school to park their vehicles while picking up and dropping off their kids. 8 SPECIAL Special Visit From Honorary Member David Macey 28 January 2015 Blueprints of the Serangoon Gardens estate A "Lo-Hei" s the Club celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, it was our pleasure to have hosted a timely visit from Honorary Member David Macey, his wife Karen Macey and their guests Mrs Vivien Farquharson and Mr John Noulton at the Club. Mr Macey is the son of the late S.C. Macey, who was the Club’s founder, benefactor and first Patron-in-Chief. Mr and Mrs Macey’s previous visit to the Club was in 2011. Also gracing the occasion were Club Trustees Mr Michael Khor, Mr Hendrick Koh and Mr Anthony Tan, the Club’s first President Mr Henry Kwek and former patron Dr Lau Teik Soon. In particular, Mr Kwek and Dr Lau have been instrumental in transforming the Club from a sports club in the early years to what it is today – a family country club with a wide range of facilities. Former Presidents Mr Thomas Tan, Mr Leong Keng Thai and Mr Anthony Lim, together with the current President Mr Randy Sng, General Committee members and members of the management team were also present at this special gathering. Upon their arrival at the Main Clubhouse, Mr and Mrs Macey and their guests were introduced to the Heritage Wall, titled “Our Humble Beginnings – 1950s”. The highlight of the visit was when Mr Macey showed us the blueprints of the Serangoon Gardens estate and the Commemorative Bowl presented to his father during the opening of the Serangoon Garden Sports Club (old name of SGCC) on 10 March 1956. After a photo-taking session at the Heritage Wall, the party proceeded to Kensington Ballroom 3 for dinner. Presenting of Commemorative Bowl Happy 61st Birthday, Mr Macey Before dinner commenced, President Randy Sng took the opportunity to thank Mr and Mrs Macey and their guests for visiting the Club. The guests were then treated to a sumptuous Chinese dinner, which included ‘Yu Sheng’ to mark the approaching Chinese New Year. Mr Macey delighted the Club when he presented the Commemorative Bowl to President Randy Sng, expressing his wishes for the Club to have this important piece of heritage. Mr Macey was very pleased and touched when we surprised him with a birthday cake, as his 61st birthday was just round the corner. After dinner, the party adjourned to Club Twenty-Two for drinks. The visit concluded on a high note, with Honorary Secretary Bob Mong and his band mates from The Melodians performing a special Happy Birthday song for Mr Macey. It was most definitely our honor to have hosted Mr and Mrs Macey and their guests during their visit to Singapore. We look forward to seeing them again in the near future. David Macey was conferred the title of Honorary Member in June 2010, in recognition of the generous contributions of his father S.C. Macey to the Club. The Commemorative Bowl bestowed by Mr David Macey will be placed in the glass cabinet near the main entrance. 9 SPECIAL A Home Away From Home O The clubhouse in 1956 was also known as "the hut". nce the Club’s only staff member, Ms Irene Ee was also its first female employee and to date its longest-serving employee, having worked at the Club for over thirty years. “In the past, people had never heard of Serangoon Gardens Country Club. The taxi driver would ask, ‘Where? There is such a club in Serangoon Gardens estate?”, Ms Ee, now a Membership Executive, recounted. “Now, they know where it is even without you having to tell them.” The Club has come a long way since its days as a humble “hut”. This year marks the 60th anniversary of Serangoon Gardens Country Club (SGCC). First established on 29 April 1955, it was initially known as Serangoon Garden Sports Club. It was founded by Squadron Leader Mr Steven Charles (S. C.) Macey, a former member of the British Royal Air Force and the Managing Director of Serangoon Gardens Estate Limited, in charge of the housing development of Serangoon Gardens estate. An architect by training, Mr Macey noted that the area had limited accessibility from other parts of Singapore and approached the Rural Board for 5.65 acres (approximately 22,864 square metres) of land along Kensington Park Road to set up a sports club for residents, following the completion of the housing project. However, with residents considering it the obligation of the developer to provide a clubhouse that was fully furnished, canvassing for membership and raising funds turned out to be a formidable challenge. Mr Macey then announced that his company would pay for all expenses. 10 Mr S.C. Macey during his address before handing over the keys to the Club On 10 March 1956, Serangoon Garden Sports Club was officially opened exclusively for residents of Serangoon Gardens estate. In honor of Mr Macey’s contributions, the main clubhouse was named “Macey Building”. Members, consisting of mostly British servicemen, would congregate for soccer and hockey matches, billiards, darts, contract bridge or tombola. Whenever rain flooded the soccer field, it would double up as a swimming pool and fishing pond. With free movie screenings also available at a makeshift openair cinema, the Club was bustling with life. Football in the 70s Enjoying a game of chess As British troops pulled out of Singapore in the late 1960s and early 1970s, membership was made up mostly of locals residing in the area. The Club was later renamed Serangoon Gardens Recreation Club, with games like soccer and netball increasingly popular and many tournaments held. Mr Eddy Wee, who has been with the Club since 1972 and a founding member, recalls the times with fondness in his voice. Now a 68-year-old retiree, he used to play soccer with his friends at the Club and had represented the Club in competitions at club and constituency levels. Mr Wee reminisced, “The football field was not maintained by anybody. Whenever the committee saw that the football field was in very bad condition, they would order a lorry-load of soil and dump it. The players would help to fill up the potholes.” The Club’s premises suffered from a lack of maintenance due to dwindling membership. In 1981, the Club was redeveloped to form Serangoon Gardens Country Club, under the encouragement and foresight of Dr. Lau Teik Soon (Member of Parliament, 1976 to 1996 for Serangoon Gardens and Thomson GRC). Dr Lau recalled, “What struck me was that here was a huge piece of land with great potential. I felt that, to serve those living in the area more adequately, the Management Committee should embark on a new development phase for the Club.” Beginning on 27 June 1983 and overseen by Mr Henry Kwek (first President of the Club), Phase One culminated in the 3-storey main Clubhouse building. Comprising a landscaped atrium, a computer games room, a chess room, a restaurant and a discotheque, it cost $4.2 million and was opened on 5 April 1986 by Mr E. W. Barker, then Minister for Law. The swimming pool and the annex building (including spa pools and squash courts) were added under Phase Two, enabling members to enjoy a more comprehensive array of facilities. In 1994, the 2-storey Heliconia Wing was constructed under Phase Three, encompassing a jackpot room, a 10-lane bowling alley, a new restaurant and a 200-seat Plans for the new clubhouse in 1981 auditorium. More recently, in 2008, the Clubhouse’s right wing was torn down and rebuilt into a 3-storey wing, adding facilities such as a sports bar (later revamped into what is now known as the Crossroads Lounge), a dance and music lounge, a new jackpot room, a karaoke hall, mahjong rooms and a reading room to the Club. In 2010, the 500-seat Kensington ballroom was constructed on the 2nd level of the Heliconia Wing. In late 2012, newer facilities like The Hangout were created and the Main Lobby revamped. The Club has constantly upgraded itself to keep up with the times and to better serve its members. Ms Beatrice Gomez, 74 and also a founding member, regards the Club as her “second home”. Introduced to the Club in the 1960s by her father-in-law, her favourite memories include dancing at Club parties with her late husband and their friends. Now a retiree, she visits the Club a few times a week to enjoy its facilities. She shared, “I swim, my grandchildren go to the gym and we eat. Everything as and when we want. Before the start of the event, a cute goat mascot went round the lobby to mingle with the audience and there were even lions to usher in the Trustees, President and General Committee members. This was followed by a magnificent drum performance to hype up the atmosphere. Club President Randy Sng and Club Trustee Hendrick Koh then opened the event proper with the dotting of the lion’s eye, a tradition before the lion dance to awaken the spirit of the lion and give it life. Up next was the crowd’s favourite item, the mei hua zhuang (The Plum Blossom Pole) performance, which had the lion executing the dangerous stunt of leaping on wooden poles wedged into the ground. The excitement did not stop there. The crowd was then awed by the next performance, cai qing (Picking the Green) in which three lions climbed up the poles and plucked the vegetables attached to it. After the amazing performances, adults and children alike waited eagerly for their turns to receive good luck oranges and ang pows from the General Committee members and Trustees. 30 Dragon dance performance Distributing good luck oranges and ang pows Dotting of the lion's eye by President Randy Sng Gong Xi Fa Cai Magnificient drum performance Cute goat mascot 31 PAST EVENTS SPORTS & RECREATION SGCC Golf Convenor Cup 23 January 2015 Description Name Overall Champion Chew Boon Kee Division A Name Champion James Leow 0 38 36 74 74 Runner-Up Kitty Liew 18 47 46 93 75 Second Runner-Up Steve Tay 9 42 44 86 77 Fourth Steven Lee 15 50 43 93 78 Fifth Ibrahim Atan 15 49 44 93 78 Division B Name Champion William Foo 19 46 48 94 75 Runner-Up Aaron Lim 21 50 46 96 75 Second Runner-Up Ann Pao 33 52 56 108 75 Fourth John Ow 22 53 49 102 80 Fifth John Low 19 51 51 102 83 Ball Sweep 1st Nine Teo Guan Lye 2nd Nine Terrence Fernandez Nearest-to-Pin Winner Nicholas Lim (left) 32 13 H’cap H’cap 44 41 85 72 1st Nine 2nd Nine Gross Nett Overall Champion Chew Boon Kee (left) with Golf Sub-Committee member Charles Koh (right) 1st Nine 2nd Nine Gross Nett Nearest-To-Pin Name (From L-R) Ann Pao, Margaret Lee, Kitty Liew H’cap 1st Nine 2nd Nine Gross Nett Division A Champion James Leow (right) Nicholas Lim Golf Section January Chew Boon Kee Monthly Medal Winner 1st Nine Winner Teo Guan Lye (left) (From L-R) Albert Ong, Pao Kiew Tee, William Foo, Lee Yeok Hoon Division B Champion William Foo (left) 2nd Nine Winner Terrence Fernandez (right) (From L-R) Charles Koh, Ricardo Soh, Koh Yiak Thim, Philip Koh Golf Ang Bao Game 27 February 2015 A total of 52 golfers participated in the Golf Ang Bao Game, held at Orchid Country Club for the second consecutive year. Inspire your child to try something new with one of these innovative ideas from Stamford American International School’s Early Years Specialists. Musical Youth “Go to a concert. The Singapore Symphony Orchestra has a concert series called the SSO Babies Prom, suitable for audience members 2 years old and up, to create exposure to live music within a thrilling musical adventure that children will love. Exposure to quality music is a very important part of the Suzuki Method, even an hour of passive listening a day will develop the child’s ear.” Stamford Music teacher, Katherine Sullivan, introduces the violin through the Suzuki method in Pre-Kindergarten to build an understanding of ensemble playing while developing a love for music. Bilingual Baby “Visit a local library in Singapore and enjoy story time in Mandarin to create exposure to the language. At home, subscribe to a Chinese TV channel and enjoy a Chinese movie night together, showing your child that as a family this is something you are all interested in will help encourage them to speak more.” Mandarin teacher, Violet Chan, introduces Stamford students from 2 to 5 years old to daily Mandarin through stories, music and movement, cultivating interest in learning languages. Art Attack “Visit a range of arts experiences, from galleries to museums; temples to multicultural artists, exposing your child to a wide range of visual experiences will help deepen their awareness of different art forms. Designate an area in your home to allow your children easy access to art supplies and resources – great if mess scares you!” Art Specialist, Tanya Vokietaitis, delivers specialist teaching instruction from Kindergarten 1 at Stamford, experimenting with tools and techniques to develop the skills and confidence to enhance creativity. Play Time “Take a walk on a variety of uneven surfaces; from a trail along the Green Corridor to a sandy beach, uneven surfaces will help build optimal strength and endurance. Climbing structures and hanging bars in outdoor playgrounds also are a great way to strengthening many muscles at once. For rainy days, blow up some balloons and get your children to try and keep them off the floor – great for hand eye coordination.” Stamford PE teacher, David Pendleton-Nash, delivers Physical Education for 3 to 5 year olds at Stamford. A balanced assessment of the child’s motor skills, from specialist teachers, ensures that the full range of skills are developed to provide the foundation for many classroom activities. +65 6653 7907 www.sais.edu.sg 41 The Connoisseur Circle GIVING YOU MORE REASONS TO WINE AND DINE IN THE CLUB The Connoisseur Circle membership is perfect for any wine enthusiast or seasoned spirit lover.
