The age of the internet, 9-11, the .com bubble burst, the housing crisis as well as the development of the cell phone, I pod, I pads, laptops, Facebook and twitter. It’s a new and ever changing world. Twenty five years ago in an upstairs bedroom, with a staff of one, an IBM typewriter and carbon papers to make copies, the National Kidney Foundation of Utah and Idaho was born. In 1987 in that home office our first fund raising gala was planned which honored Utah’s then US Senator and later US Astronaut, Jake Garn, for donating a kidney to save the life of his daughter. Deeply committed to the promotion of organ donation as giving the Gift of Life, Senator Garn is serving his 26th year as the Chairman of our Board. Today, through committed leadership, generous donors, devoted board members and hundreds of volunteers, we have evolved into one of the premier charities in the nation, receiving a multitude of national awards for setting a standard of excellence in Making Lives Better. Dave Trimble, President Each year we help an average of 800 patients with such necessities as rent, insurance, utilities, food, medications, transportation to and from dialysis, and patient camps and conferences, as well as educational scholarships to deserving patients to allow them to become self-sufficient and provide for their families. We educate an average of 6000 public school students each year regarding the prevention of kidney disease, kidney problems from drug abuse, and the importance of organ donation. We provide state of the art medical conferences to educate the health care community regarding earlier diagnosis and better treatment for chronic kidney disease. We conduct yearly statewide Kidney Early Evaluation Programs for hundreds of those at risk for kidney disease i.e., those with a family history of the disease or with high blood pressure or diabetes. Importantly we support a variety of substantive medical research projects with the ultimate goal of finding a cure for kidney failure. Although this report is a celebration of 25 years of extraordinary accomplishments, we still have a mountain to climb. Because of the ongoing recurrence of the 2 major causes of kidney disease, diabetes and high blood pressure, the incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) continues to rise. Over 26 million Americans have some stage of CKD, most of whom are unaware of it. Almost 100,000 Americans await a life saving kidney transplant with over 400 waiting in Utah and Idaho alone. Over 400,000 Americans and over 2600 people in Utah and Idaho depend upon a dialysis machine 3 days each week to stay alive and struggle with daily challenges that beg for relief. With often as many as 900 new Utah and Idaho patients being placed on dialysis each year, our mission to Make Lives Better is our foremost focus and passion. Deen Vetterli, CEO This 25 year milestone serves not only to remind us of how far we have come, but of how much remains to be done. We will not rest on our laurels but will reach toward higher goals with each New Year. With the continuing support of each of you, our caring friends and volunteers, we are confident we can meet the challenges needed to ensure the best care for our patients, while working to achieve our ultimate goal: total eradication of diseases of the kidney. Gratefully, Dave Trimble, President Deen Vetterli, CEO NKFU&I Annual Report 2011 l page 1 PAT I E N T SE RVICE S • Life Sustaining Transportation provides 400,000 Safe Miles • Over 100,000 Ser vings of Nutritional Supplements Improve Patient Quality of Life As gas prices are still at an all time high, Fresenius Medical Care in Ogden has made it possible for dialysis patients to receive financial assistance for transportation expense to life saving dialysis three times a week. Contributions have allowed NKFU&I to help hundreds of dialysis patients throughout Utah and Idaho receive safe and reliable transportation to their dialysis treatments. This is one of the Foundation’s most important quality of life programs. With the growth of the number of dialysis patients, this service greatly improves lab results and feelings of general energy and well being in the patients who take them. Supplements include Boost Plus and Liquacel. Dietician Cheyna Palmer states, “The Liquacel sent to us has been amazing. One patient has had consistently low albumin levels of <3.0 and has been averaging 3.8 by only using this supplement when she comes in for dialysis. She has virtually no income (like the majority of our patients) and this has been a huge help to our facility. We greatly appreciate this program.” • Laptop Computers Help Dialysis Patients Stay Active and Involved Jim Fletcher, dialysis patient summarizes the NKFU&I program when he states; “The computer program is the only way I make it through 4 hours of dialysis. It’s the only way I stay sane 3 days a week. It’s the only way I stay updated on the news and it’s the best thing since sliced bread. I’ve done things for work. I’ve done church lessons and more than you can imagine. Thank you NKFU&I.” • Youth Look Forward to Bonding With Transplant Peers At YTK NKFU&I’s Youth Transplant Kamp (YTK), benefits young transplant recipients 8-17 years of age and is open to recipients throughout the western states. It is the nation’s only week-long outdoor adventure camp for all organ transplant recipients, i.e. (kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas), allowing them to form lifetime memories with their peers who have had similar experiences with organ transplantation. NKFU&I Annual Report 2011 l page 2 PAT I E N T • Transplant Team Utah Idaho — Wins Big in Madison SE RVICE S • 265 Dialysis And Transplant Patients Enjoy Family Kidney Kamp The US Transplant Games sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation is an Olympic style competition where over 1800 transplant athletes compete for medals in strenuous sports, proving that organ transplantation offers a complete return to good health and is indeed “the Gift of Life”. Dr. Terry Box, a gastroenterologist and liver recipient from Salt Lake Valley scored four medals. Sally Ogaard, a kidney recipient, Ashton Arndt, a liver recipient, and Wes Hill, a heart recipient all from Salt Lake City, earned three medals each. Athlete, Rick Lily stated, “The Transplant Games are an amazing event, talking to others about experiences like the ones I have had, as well as a chance for the transplant recipients to recognize and thank donor families.” Team Utah Idaho 2010 members: Ashton Arndt Brian Batt Terry Box Joe Frazier Kalli Heslop Wes Hill Mikael Lawrence Rick Lily Stephen Merrill Riley Nelson Sally Ogaard Whitney Peterson Mykel Ramsey Neal Reese Beckham Scadlock Benjamin Stevemer Nathan Winger The Truck Show Family Kidney Kamp continues to be a highlight for our Patient Services Program. Over 260 spent the weekend among the pines at the base of spectacular Mount Timpanogos. Hospitals were forgotten as kampers participated in fishing, swimming, hiking, basketball, shuffleboard, miniature golf, raquetball, arts and crafts, and heard motivational speakers. Patients and families left the kamp renewed, and better able to cope with the challenge of living day-to-day with kidney disease. NKFU&I Annual Report 2011 l page 3 PAT I E N T • Over 200 Promote Donor Awareness at Easter Event Over 200 people attended the Annual Donor Awareness Easter Egg Hunt, which included dialysis patients, organ donors, transplant recipients and their families. Everyone enjoyed lunch, a visit from the Easter Bunny, and 1,000 eggs were found by the children. Prizes were given for Best Easter Bonnet, Craziest Socks and Cutest Basket. SE RVICE S • Medical Alert Jewelr y Made Available A commitment of NKFU&I is to insure quality healthcare to patients. NKFU&I has supplied over 800 pieces of medical alert jewelry since the inception of the program. These identification necklaces and bracelets provide important information about the patient and can be life saving in case of an emergency. • Patient Educational Scholarships Promote Independence NKFU&I is dedicated to help fund educational expenses for deserving patients who wish to complete their higher education in order to become self sufficient and provide for themselves and their families. “Once again your Foundation has made my dream of college education a reality.” --Scholarship Recipient • Utah & Idaho Patients Receive Increased Emergency Funding One of the Foundation’s most important programs is to provide emergency funding as a safety net for patients. This fund is often the only means of preventing the loss of a place to live or critically needed utilities. Patients in need of emergency funding received assistance grants to help pay for emergencies such as transportation, medications, food, rent, utilities and insurance. In addition, the Foundation continues to supply the Dialysis Center Emergency Patient Fund in all Utah and Idaho centers. Over 4,000 students, grades 6-9, participated in the interactive presentation learning about their kidneys, the benefits of a healthful lifestyle and diet, and the importance of organ donation. The NKFU&I’s 5th Annual Continuing Medical Education Conference partnered with the Ogden Surgical Medical Society, with 250 physicians in attendance. This year’s conference titled, “The Changing Face of American Medicine,” covered a variety of topics targeting the primary care provider. Visiting physician, Dr. Andrew Narva, MD, from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, as well as local speakers received positive reviews from attendees regarding state-of-the-art information they received on kidney disease, early diagnosis and treatment. “The Kids & Kidneys program educates Jr. High and middle school students through an informational DVD and a lively discussion on the importance of taking care of their bodies.” Julie Hebertson, Teacher – Riverview Jr. High School, Murray, Utah Healthcare providers received information about hematuria, proteinuria, kidney injury, kidneys and drugs, vitamin D and early referral. A post conference survey by Intermountain Health Care indicated that 92% of attendees will utilize conference information to improve diagnosis and treatment in kidney disease. “After attending the Continuing Medical Education course, I will be more proactive in blood pressure and diabetes care.” Attending Physician “92% of conference attendees stated they will utilize conference information to improve diagnosis and treatment in kidney disease.” Conference Evaluations 2011 KIDNEY LEARNING DAY SATURDAY MAY 7, 2011 INTERMOUNTAIN MEDICAL CENTER DOTY FAMILY EDUCATION CENTER NKFU&I Annual Report 2011 l page 5 E D U C AT I O N P R O G R A M S D E VE L OP MENT P R OG RA MS • Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) – Screens Hundreds of Individuals in Utah & Idaho • Fresenius Employees Commit To Fund Life Saving Patient Transportation KEEP, an early detection screening, continues to raise awareness about kidney disease and to help those at risk prevent or delay kidney failure. Screenings were conducted in 18 different locations and screened over 1,600 at-risk individuals. Dr. Allan J. Collins, MD, Professor of Medicine, University of Minnesota, has stated that, “KEEP is the very best prevention initiative of any health care organization in the country.” Since the start of the program, over 6,100 individuals have benefitted from this critical prevention program. For the fifth consecutive year employees for Fresenius Medical Care in Ogden joined with NKFU&I to fund the Patient Dialysis Transportation Program. Individual employee donations totaled over $70,000 funds that provide safe and reliable transportation for hundreds of patients who need assistance getting to and from life-saving dialysis. “I count myself as lucky to have attended a KEEP screening where I learned I had CKD in time to do something about it. I have greatly appreciated the help of the National Kidney Foundation in helping me prevent the need for dialysis.” Andy Eatchel NKFU&I Annual Report 2011 l page 6 D EV E L O P ME NT P ROG R AMS • Utah’s Kidney Kars Donation Program Remains Among the Strongest Car Donation Programs in the Nation. Even with the strain on the economy and people driving their old cars longer, the Kidney Kars donation program in Utah is still recognized among the most successful car donation programs in the nation. Since 2007 the overall number of donations has declined nationwide, however our innovative marketing and public relation campaigns have enabled us to see the ongoing success of NKF of Utah & Idaho’s Kidney Kars program benefiting our lifesaving programs. This year, community partnerships were formed with Jimmer Fredette, local basketball hero who was 2010-2011 NCAA Player of the Year, now playing for the NBA Sacramento Kings. During the process to recruit Jimmer to our cause, he and his agent at Octagon Sports Agency agreed to become organ donors. Kidney Kars continues to enjoy the celebrated community support of Coaches Kyle Whittingham and Bronco Mendenhall, and the generous time and efforts of our friends at KSL News radio. Very special thanks to Doug Wright for his personal endorsement of our program, and to Amanda Dickson for her tireless professionalism. Chairman Vaughn Pulsipher’s leadership and generosity again ensured the success of the tournament held at Salt Lake Country Club. BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall stated, “the last two years we’ve had my players, it’s the most fun golfing I’ve had in my life. The easy part is we’re doing a good job for a great cause.” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham’s ‘well recruited team’ once again took home the Kidney Cup. The Foundation received major support and sponsorships from generous local donors raising over $64,000. Utah Governor Gary Herbert opened the Great Salt Lake Truck Show with a ringing endorsement of the trucking industry and the work of the Great Salt Lake Truck Show Committee. The show offered truckers and companies from coast to coast an opportunity to show off their state-of-the-art trucks and equipment. Held at Thanksgiving Point the event included a car show, entertainment, truck pull, evening light show, trophies and prizes. The tremendous effort put forth by the Truck Show Committee resulted in Jeff England, President of Pride Transport and Chairman of the show presenting a check for $35,000 to the Foundation. Funds from the event support the annual Truck Show Family Kidney Kamp for Utah & Idaho kidney patients and their families, as a much anticipated highlight of our Patient Services Program. Legendary Coaches LaVell Edwards, Kyle Whittingham, Ron McBride, and Bronco Mendenhall join hands in support of NKFU&I • 250 Walk to Promote Organ Donation In August 2010 the Foundation held its second kidney walk and picnic at Wheeler Historic Farm. Two hundred and fifty family members and friends walked as teams to honor kidney patients and organ donors. Activities included the painting of a “kidney van”, a barbeque dinner, and a tour of the Historic Wheeler Farm.
