AT THE YMCA REGISTER: FALL 2: NOV 20, 2016 - FEB 4, 2017 Nov 7 • 6:00pm Somerset Hills YMCA Members Nov 14 • 10:00am Open Registration SOMERSET HILLS YMCA Fall 2 Program • 2016-2017 PEAK REACH YOUR Table of Contents Dear Members, Developing children to become active, thriving, contributing members of society is vital to the Y’s cause of strengthening community. Through a vast array of programs, from preschool to sports to swimming to dance to art, the Y offers children many experiences that create new interests and can ultimately lead to their passion. As we look at the impact the Y can have on children, we celebrate the accomplishments of Sebastian Lutz, a Somerset Hills YMCA Swim Team alumnus and Zack Warner, a Somerset Valley YMCA Swim Team swimmer, who both qualified to compete in the 2016 Olympic Trials, and Tobin Heath, a USA Women’s Soccer Team player who started her soccer career at Somerset Hills YMCA at the age of 4. At the Y, we nurture children and inspire them to discover what they can achieve, to build character and to gain confidence. We believe that just one moment, one word of encouragement or one person can be the spark that ignites a child’s bright future. We invite you to discover programs to help you reach your peak this fall at the Y! Sincerely, David M. Carcieri President and CEO FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Thanks to funds raised through our Annual Campaign, we are able to provide financial assistance to individuals and families so that everyone has a chance to learn, grow and thrive. Fall 2 Program Guide 5 www.somersetcountyymca.org OUR CAUSE IN ACTION At the Y, we are committed to nurturing the potential of all kids, promoting healthy living and giving back to neighbors. Seventh grade is a critical and transitional time when young teens are often introduced to risk behaviors. Research has shown that kids who adopt healthy habits at this pivotal age can benefit for a lifetime. FREE 7TH GRADE MEMBERSHIP At the Y, we are committed to providing teens with opportunities that help them discover their true potential. Through our free 7th grade memberships, we hope to inspire kids to make good decisions that form life-long healthy habits. Our program encourages kids to step out of their comfort zone and into their growth zone by instilling a sense of independence, responsibility, respect, leadership, and, of course, fun! The 7th Grade Membership Program provides a safe place where teens will find exciting and unique opportunities to cultivate values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. As a school health professional, I understand that health and education go hand-in-hand in preparing children for academic success. Healthy students simply learn better. I’ve seen first-hand how the Y’s 7th Grade Initiative Membership makes a difference in the emotional, social and physical development of students. This program instills healthy lifestyle behaviors and the kids find a sense of belonging without the pressures of school or team sports. As seventh graders become more involved in social and physical activities with their peers, they gain a sense of confidence, healthy friendships and a positive outlook on life. The Y’s 7th Grade Initiative program really is life changing. - Suzanne, Middle School Nurse At the Y, 7th graders enjoy unlimited access to our wellness centers, pools, basketball gym, as well as activities geared toward their age group, such as group exercise classes, weekly social events, special events, volunteer opportunities and more. We invite all 7th graders in our service area to sign up. Pick up an application at the Welcome Center today! Fall Program Guide • Session 1 6 www.somersetcountyymca.org SWIM Over the years at the Y, we have taught thousands of children, teens and adults to swim, which has helped to minimize the risk of drowning in our community. Swimming is a life skill that builds self-esteem and confidence. Our programs are focused on building strong, secure and confident individuals. Swim Lessons •Priority is given to individuals who are not currently registered in a class so that we can accommodate as many children as possible. •Since we have a set number of lanes, we typically cannot open one class without cancelling another class with low enrollment. (Classes will not be cancelled during the first 2 weeks of the registration period due to low enrollment). •We will take participants off the waiting list through the 4th or 5th week of a session. Our swim lessons are specifically tailored to the participant’s age, swimming ability, level of physical development and confidence in the water. Participants will advance in the program as they become more skilled in the water. YMCA swim levels address the individual’s ability to demonstrate: 1. developmentally appropriate water skills (water orientation or stroke development) 2. personal safety (know the pool rules, how to float, proper use of life jackets, resting strokes, boating safety) 3. personal growth (gaining confidence and demonstrating Y values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility) 4. water games and sports (understanding of the how-tos) 5. Rescue (knowing how to be safer in and around the water, how to respond in an emergency). Class Cancellation Classes may be canceled due to low enrollment. In these cases, you will be contacted by the Aquatics Director. Private Lessons Our Swim Program philosophy believes in the use of bubbles (flotation devices) to help children gradually become accustomed to the water. We remove the bubbles at least once every lesson or two to test your child’s buoyancy and to build confidence. If you have questions about the appropriate level for your child, please schedule an evaluation with us. You may drop-in for a swim evaluation to determine your child’s level as follows: Private lessons provide personal instruction in the pool. To register, please complete a Private Swim Lesson form, which is available at the Y’s Welcome Center. Open to Somerset Hills YMCA members. For more information, please contact Suzi Pellegrino at [email protected] or 908 766 7898 x604. Drop-in Swim Level Evaluation Masters Swim Friday Saturday Monday Nov 4 Nov 5 Nov 7 The U.S. Masters Swimming program appropriately challenges beginner to competitive swimmers by improving stroke technique. Whether you are a traditional competitive master’s swimmer, an open water swimmer, a triathlete, or you just want to swim for fun, this program is for you! The workouts will be coached by Ed Tsuzuki, certified Level 2 U.S. Masters Swimming coach. Contact the Welcome Center for schedule and cost. Additional information is available at www.somersetcountyymca.org. 4:00-4:30pm 1:15-1:45pm 3:30-3:50pm Due to class consistency and ratios we do not offer make‑up swim lessons (including closures due to weather). Swimmers (ages 10 and under) are required to have a parent or guardian (age 18 or older) sign them out after class each week. Family & Open Swim Throughout the year, Family and Open Swims help to deepen family connections and to give members a sense of belonging. Please visit www.somersetcountyymca.org/schedules for our family and open swim times. For more information about our Aquatics program, please contact Duke Munzer at [email protected] or 908 766 7898 x604. Swim Lesson Wait List Water Slides at the Stoddard Pool If your child is placed on the wait list for a group swim lesson, you will be contacted directly via email or phone if a space becomes available. We will try our best to accommodate your request for a lesson. •In most instances, a current participant must drop out of the class for a space to become available. •In some cases, depending on the level and assistant availability, we can add an assistant to increase the ratio. Fall 2 Program Guide Riders must be 48” tall. Slides are not active during swim meets. Please visit us at www.somersetcountyymca.org for our family and open swim times.
