PBS HAWAII PRESENTS: ‘ike - KNOWLEDGE IS EVERYWHERE
AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: WALT DISNEY
On the Cover
Songs of Aloha, which premiered
in 2000 on the national PBS
network, was a “who’s who” of
local performers: The Brothers
Cazimero, Amy Hānaialiʻi Gilliom
and Willie K, O’Brian Eselu with
Ke Kai O Kahiki, Mākaha Sons,
Jake Shimabukuro, Nā Leo,
Hapa, Ledward Kaapana, Cyril
Pahinui, Aaron Mahi, and the
Kamehameha Schools Glee
Club. On Monday, October 5, to
commemorate 50 years of public
television in Hawaii, PBS Hawaii
will bring back this historic
program as PBS Hawaii: Celebrating
50 Years With Songs of Aloha.
From Left - Leslie Wilcox, PBS Hawaii President and CEO; Donna Tanoue, Bank of Hawaii
Foundation President; HIKI NŌ Students; Galen Nakamura, Senior VP at Bank of Hawaii

Kona
High School, Maui Waena Intermediate School,
Seabury Hall Middle School); and Oahu (Aliamanu

Schools Kapalama, King Intermediate, Leilehua
High School, Mid-Pacific Institute, Punahou School,

Waipahu High School, Wheeler Middle School).
Proud HIKI NŌ student journalists and storytellers got
to walk the red carpet and show what they “can do” on
the big screen to their peers, teachers, principals, parents
and community leaders. Venues included the Historic Iao
Theater in Wailuku, Maui; the Palace Theater in downtown
Hilo on Hawaii Island; the Aloha Theatre in Kealakekua on
the Kona Coast of the Big Island; on an inflatable drive-in
movie screen under a full moon at Island School in Lihue,
Kauai; and on the largest screen at the Consolidated Ward
Center multiplex in Kakaako, Oahu.

uring each of this year’s HIKI NŌ Festival
screenings, Bank of Hawaii top executives
joined PBS Hawaii staffers to congratulate
and honor participating teachers and students. As
the founding broadcast supporter of HIKI NŌ since
the program premiered in 2011, the Bank of Hawaii
Foundation has been key to the program’s success,
making it possible for HIKI NŌ to be broadcast to a
statewide audience on PBS Hawaii.
This year, the Foundation has renewed its
strong support with a generous $100,000 gift.
“HIKI NŌ represents one of Bank of Hawaii
Foundation’s best investments,” said Donna
Tanoue, Bank of Hawaii Foundation President.
“The HIKI NŌ Festival screenings in Lihue, Wailuku,
Kona, Hilo and Honolulu remind us of the enormous talent of our youth and the important role
we can play in supporting PBS Hawaii and HIKI NŌ.”

wo-Year $50,000 Grant from Central Pacific Bank
Foundation to NEW HOME
The Central Pacific Bank Foundation has made a two-year,
$50,000 donation to PBS Hawaii for the renovation and construction of the
public television station’s new facility.
The Clarence T.C. Ching Campus has risen in a graceful curve on Nimitz
Highway at the entrance to Sand Island. Hawaii’s only public television
station is in the homestretch of capital fundraising, having reached over
$26.5 million of a $30 million campaign goal.
“We are honored to support organizations such as PBS Hawaii that
share our commitment to create a better Hawaii,” said CPB Foundation
President Denis Isono. “PBS Hawaii already does great work within our
state, and the new facility will help to further their reach by enhancing
programming and providing additional learning opportunities.”
