The Shofar Beth Am Shalom - A Reform Jewish Congregation A New Beginning . . . to an Old Tradition www.bethamshalom.org Message from Rabbi February 2015 Shevat – Adar 5775 Volume 8, Issue 8 Check out our WEBSITE! www.bethamshalom.org What’s Inside: Rabbi ................................... 1 Every week, we read about another outrage, yet another atrocity committed by terrorists driven by a fanatical version of religion that teaches them to kill in the name of God. Whether Al Qaeda, ISIS, Boco Haram, Hezbolah, the Houtis; whether Shiite, Sunni; whether in Syria, Iraq, Israel, France; whether Iran supports them or Saudi Arabia, the results are the same: they murder innocent people. Their dream is to make all people submit to their will, their beliefs and their vision for humanity. We see the tragic results of extremist ideology as seen through history up to the present day. That, coupled with my strong adherence to a religious belief and practice that is rooted in tradition while in touch with contemporary circumstances and the needs of people today, leads me to continue teaching a liberal Jewish philosophy. For, it is a religious world-view that freely proclaims its own tradition, WITHOUT denying the same freedom to others that respects and preserves humanity and honors God. When all citizens have freedom of and from religion, societies flourish. Arising from this belief, the URJ, promotes religious freedoms and tolerance here, Israel and abroad. That is why our movement has been campaigning so hard for the World Zionist Congress Elections that I spoke about on Rosh Hashanah and wrote about in the November Shofar. (see, https://bethamshalom.wordpress.com/) We recognize, that we have religious extremists among our own. In Israel, some ultra-Orthodox Jews work to do more than just promote their stream of Judaism. They try to impose their practices on the Israeli citizenry at-large through elections and legislation that delegitimize all non-Orthodox Jews. In response to the murder of three Jewish teens by Muslim fanatics, it was the most fanatical of Jews that set a Palestinian teen on fire and murdered him. We will not—must not stand idly by while some murder in the name of God and Judaism. They do not speak for us; their deeds are in no way “Jewish,” so we must not allow them to act without our condemnation and ongoing campaign to promote a more tolerant and democratic Israel. (The Prayer for Healing — the MiShebeirach Prayer—is said and sung every Friday night at our services. Members of the congregation are invited to add names to a list of friends, relatives and congregants who are ill. Since 1995 when Jewish song composer and singer Debbie Friedman created a new version and musical setting to this prayer, the prayer started to become as scholar William Cutter writes: “the central moment in liberal religious ceremony.” He says that we continue to honor Debbie Friedman’s memory “…by examining what it is we do when we pray, “May the One who blessed our ancestors, bless [a certain person] with a complete healing of body and soul.”) Debbie Friedman understood the dual direction of the MiShebeirach prayer as both a prayer for divine intervention (“God, do something!”) as well as a prayer of communal and public affirmation of hope — binding people together in a sharing of each individual’s particularity. The hope for God’s intervention based on our act of prayer is a vertical approach. Engagement with one’s community is the horizontal piece; it’s about shared, participatory and, ultimately, cultural bonding. Because you blessed Abraham and Sarah, O God, bless my cousin who is ill. We cite the biblical patriarchy to affirm that we belong to this community. Two directions are built into the prayer itself: We invoke the ancient community (horizontal) in the hope for divine intervention (vertical). The MiShebeirach prayer seems to have migrated from its origins as a prayer for rain, citing God’s providence in previous circumstances as justification for hoping that such providence would reappear, to a prayer recited in synagogues throughout Europe and the Middle East. It took on various versions and was chanted for a variety of occasions. The standard formula generally remained — almost always, the prayer was connected to the Torah or Haftarah reading. Debbie’s curiosity drew her to expand the repertory of uses for a healing prayer. Elaborations and innovations, variations on the core theme, seem justified by a slew of historical precedents and particular circumstances. Even the well-considered distinction between “curing” (what doctors do) and “healing” (what we all have to do) emerges as more important through her creative hand. New research on the prayer is under way — even urging that we consider a revised text for individuals in a liminal state of being maintained in their disease without any acute emergent moment. The idea that we influence God’s actions through our prayer remains problematic for the modern skeptic. But the community vector is powerful enough to drive even the most pessimistic worshipper toward hope. It moves us to stand up in synagogues large and small to wait patiently for that moment when we might announce the name of a sister or brother, a friend or parent. Mi Shebeirach: Lyrics by Debbie Friedman, z"l and Drorah Setel (copyright 1988) Mi shebeirach avoteinu [May the One who blessed our patriarchs] M'kor habracha l’imoteinu [the Source of blessing for our matriarchs] May the source of strength who blessed the ones before us, Help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing. And let us say: Amen. Mi shebeirach imoteinu [May the One who blessed our matriarchs] M'kor habracha l’avoteinu [the Source of blessing for our patriarchs] Bless those in need of healing with refuah sh’leimah [complete healing] The renewal of body, the renewal of spirit. And let us say: Amen. Cantor Forman The Shofar / Volume 8, Issue 8 / Page 4 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE As I begin to write my Shofar article, I am looking out of my window and the snow continues to fall. Thank G-d we didn't get the brunt of the storm as was originally predicted. The feeling of peace and serenity has completely taken over. It is the same feeling I have as I enter temple each time. I hope you share this feeling as well. I wanted to mention two events that will be coming up shortly. On March 8th, a community wide Purim Carnival will be held at Temple Beth Or in Brick. On Saturday evening, April 4th, our annual second night Seder will be held at the temple catered by Fred & Murry's. Further details will follow for both events. As February is the month where we focus on love, I want you to all know how special you are. You all have a large impact on the success of our temple and the future of Judaism. B'Shalom, Francine Gimpel, President A Special Thanks for a Donation “Above & Beyond” to our BeatleMania Stage Show: Office Locations: 1215 East Veterans Highway, Jackson, New Jersey 1355 Campus Parkway, Suite 102, Wall, New Jersey (by appointment only) The Shofar / Volume 8, Issue 8 / Page 5 RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Cell Phone: (732) 551-4054 February Birthdays: Yom Wholedit Samayach – Happy Birthday to: Samuel Bussell, 24 Shevat**Alexa Eisenhauer, 8 Adar 1 Lavina Frey, 8 Adar 1**Seth Friedeman, 28 Shevat**Lindsay Roux, 8 Adar 1 Our B’nai Ruach is getting ready for their new production for the Purim Spiel on March 8. Mazel Tov to Annie Sacks and her family on the celebration of her Bat Mitzvah last month. Many thanks to those of you who continue to support our Religious School with your generous donations. Shelly Newman Religious School Chair The Chemo Hats By now most of you know about my “MAKE A CHEMO HAT” Project. At this time there are 7 of us making these hats, scarves and shawls. To date (11/20) we have made and delivered 462 items. This includes those delivered to Monmouth Hospital, Infusion Center in W. Long Branch, and now to Community Medical Center, Kimball Medical Center and the Infusion Center in Howell. Due to the large number of recipients and the fast growth of the project, we can use additional volunteers to knit and crochet and, of course, to donate YARN. It does not have to be new full skeins (that would be great), partials will be good, too. All bags of finished product as well as yarn is to be dropped off at the Beth Am Shalom office with your name & contact info inserted into the bag. Thank you! Judy Eisak The Shofar / Volume 8, Issue 8 / Page 6 MEN'S CLUB The January meeting was attended by sixteen members and there was a discussion renewed by Steve Rosenzweig regarding a possible pancake breakfast (Breakfast with the Rabbi). Big news came from Stan Lechner. He is going to vacation in Florida with the strong possibility of relocating for the warmer climate conditions. Fischel Myers volunteered to act as interim Treasurer until the next election. The next meeting will be on February 15 at 9:15 AM for breakfast with business at 9:30AM. I would like to hear from our younger male members as to any programs in which they would be interested. I have invited a representative from the Blue Claw organization to present several programs that may be considered fundraising for the Men’s Club. I imagine they may include volunteers of male and/or female members of BAS. Some of the programs may include the participation of students. Please make every effort to attend. Respectfully, Marvin Weiss, President SISTERHOOD Thank you to Melanie Giudice and Sandy Yaskulka who set up the Onegs every Friday night, and Barbara Eisenstein and Valerie Eisenstein who clean up after the Onegs. Sisterhood continues to run the Bingo kitchen every Sunday. Please call Fern Frankenberg or Sondra Ranoff if you would like to help. Women of BAS The Book Group met on Monday night, January 12, to discuss the book Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Alii who tells her story of growing up Muslim and how she escaped to find a new life in Holland and the U.S.A. It is a powerful story of her experiences and her courage to turn her back on everything she was raised to believe. Lisa Gertner led the provocative discussion and shared a YouTube video of the author and two Muslim speakers addressing the question, “Is Islam a peaceful or violent religion?” The next meeting of the Book Club is Thursday, February 12 at 7:15 PM. The book is Blessings by Anna Quindlen. If you would like to join us, the books are in the front office. Sign your name and book number to the library sheet included with the books. We hope everyone will join us and participate in the lively and informative discussions. This “Parliament of the Jewish People” not only has influence in the Jewish State, but it also makes decisions on appointments and allocations of money. For several elections now, the URJ has comprised the largest delegation. This reality is one of the chief reasons for non-Orthodox Jews in Israel gaining more recognition, rights and funding. Our delegation is formally called ARZA—Association of Reform Zionists of America. Our votes are the single most effective way we can influence Israeli policy and shape Israeli society. This election will determine Reform Judaism’s influence in Israeli institutions and government bodies. If you have pledged to vote, now is the time to vote. If you pledged on-line, you should now register and vote on line. Simply respond the email ARZA sent to you or visit https://www.reformjews4israel.org/vote/ and just follow the simple prompts to register and VOTE! If you pledge to vote with a paper pledge form, there will be a two-step process. First, you will need to register by completing a registration form that is mailed to you and is also available at Temple and submitting it to the American Zionist Movement (AZM.) Upon receipt and review, the AZM will mail a paper ballot to you which you then use to vote. The ballots themselves will be produced and distributed by AZM, and the AZM will begin mailing them in March to those who have registered. Please note, BAS cannot produce or distribute paper ballots; we can only make the registration forms available to you. Because of the increased complications with paper registration forms, I want to offer you the opportunity to register and vote on-line. Just call me, we’ll set up a time, and together, we can go on-line, and register and vote all in one short session! (Remember, whether you vote with paper ballot or on-line, there is a $10 fee or $5 if you are under 30 years of age to cover the election costs.) Remember, if you yearn for an Israel that will be safer, more secure while remaining Democratic and growing in tolerance and openness, vote and vote the ARZA line! Rabbi Steve <> <><> SAVE THE DATE! Our 2nd Night Seder will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2015 Watch for all the details in next month’s Shofar The Shofar / Volume 8, Issue 8 /Page 12 Trees in Israel Beth Am Shalom is now selling trees in Israel through the Jewish National Fund.
