WELCOME
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 30th anniversary of the IPL Yuletide Celebration!
We’re delighted you are with us celebrating another major
milestone of our holiday extravaganza. It’s hard to believe
Yuletide turns 30 this year! I’ll never forget my first year
conducting Yuletide in 1994. At the time, I was still living in New
York, leading the American Ballet Theatre as its Music Director.
After conducting the month-long Yuletide Celebration, I thought,
“well, that was a unique experience…sort of Radio City Music
Hall meets Ed Sullivan meets Holiday on Ice (minus the ice!). ”But,
I was hooked. No other orchestra was attempting to create a
holiday experience like this, and I knew I just had to be a part of
it. Best of all, leading Yuletide meant I could come home to Indiana for the holidays.
Fast forward to today, I’m so proud to be working with and being inspired by an amazing
orchestra, talented cast and an incredibly hard-working crew. When the curtain goes up for
every performance, seeing a sea of wide-eyed children and smiling patrons is such a thrill
for me.
This year’s production features one of your favorite hosts, Sandi Patty, who has sung her
way into our record books with seven Yuletides under her sequined and bejeweled belt!
She’s joined this season by the dynamic duo, quick-change artistry of David and Dania, who
are new to Yuletide! And, as always, the outstanding musicianship is on display with our
Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
On a personal note, I want to thank all of my Yuletide family members, many of whom you
don’t see on stage but are paramount in making Yuletide a success: our pops team, cast,
stage crew, costume designers, choreographers and our creative and production teams. I
would also like to thank our title sponsor, Indianapolis Power & Light, ISO board members,
staff, volunteers, patrons and our generous donors for continuing to sustain our effort and
creativity. Yuletide can celebrate 30 years and many more because of your support!
Warmest wishes for a memorable season, and thank you for making the Indianapolis
Symphony Orchestra a part of your holidays.

T’was the night before
Christmas, and all through the house,
not a computer was stirring, not even a mouse.
The estimates were prepared, awaiting a view,
in hopes they would be jobs, before they were due.
The presses were cleaned, all shiny and bright,
with visions of colors and densities just right.
Folders and stitchers sit waiting a task,
with hopes of long runs, executed as asked.
The files they lay on desks and in racks,
the jobs just waiting for clients to get back.
When out in the lot there arose such a clatter,
the neighbors came out to see what was the matter.
When what to their wondering eyes did they see?
But a group of small elves going in,
one, two, three.
We admit with a smile and a slight rosy tint,
the secret we have kept,
of our fast timely print.
A group dedicated to us,
and of course then to you,
who work like a flash,
with a smile; who knew?
The work it flies from station to station,
and into a box, the van,
to you, or the nation.
With the wink of an eye and
a cheery warm smile,
we appreciate you —
so we go the extra mile.
So from Santa and all of our elves,
we wish you the best,
and hope that this Christmas
your family is blessed.
Merry Christmas!

Mission of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra:
To inspire, entertain, educate and challenge through innovative programs and
symphonic music performed at the highest artistic level.
10
ISO PROFILE
Under the leadership of Krzysztof Urbański, one of the most acclaimed young conductors in the world,
the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to performing concerts of the highest artistic quality,
offering accessible musical experiences for all ages, working collaboratively to create powerful, enriching
arts events, and serving its community like never before – inside and outside the concert hall.
A Brief History
Under the baton of Ferdinand Schaefer, 60 men and women made their official debut as the Indianapolis
Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, November 2, 1930, in Caleb Mills Hall in the newly built Shortridge
High School. In the decades since this debut concert, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra has emerged
as one of America’s top orchestras that attracts the finest musicians, guest conductors and artists from
all over the world and presents quality classical, pops, family and holiday programming to hundreds
of thousands of people each year. The ISO has received national and international acclaim with its
radio broadcasts, tours and recordings and became the first major orchestra with a resident ensemble
(Time for Three).
The ISO’s home – the Hilbert Circle Theatre
Built in 1916, the Circle Theatre in downtown Indianapolis was the first motion picture palace west of
New York built especially for the purpose of showing feature-length photoplays. From 1916-1981, the
Circle Theatre’s repertoire ranged from world premiere movie features, classical concerts and live stage
shows to low-budget motion pictures and short films. The facility was transformed into an orchestra hall
on October 12, 1984, when the ISO made its move from Clowes Memorial Hall to downtown Indianapolis.
With a significant gift from Steve and Tomisue Hilbert in 1996, the hall was renamed the Hilbert Circle
Theatre. In 2013, new seats were installed to create more accessibility and comfort for patrons, courtesy
of Lilly Endowment Inc.
Leadership within the ISO
Maestro Krzysztof Urbański was appointed as the ISO’s seventh Music Director on October 19, 2010, and
has now become a preferred and highly respected conductor among top orchestras in Europe, Asia and
the United States. Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly’s approach to innovative pops programming
has garnered acclaim throughout North America, where he continues to serve as the Principal Pops
Conductor for four major orchestras, including Indianapolis. Concertmaster Zach De Pue begins his ninth
season with the ISO and alongside his trio, Time for Three, leads the orchestra in performances and new
audience development initiatives. Conductor Laureate Raymond Leppard, who successfully led the ISO for
14 years as Music Director, continues his involvement through the beloved Classical Christmas concert in
December.
The ISO in 2015-2016
In his fifth season with the ISO, Krzysztof Urbański focuses on major works by Beethoven, Brahms,
Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich and is collaborating with renowned soloists Joshua Bell, Emanuel Ax, Dejan
Lazić and Garrick Ohlsson. Maestro Urbański also presents a three-week festival, “Out of this World,” with
musical themes inspired by space and a semi-staged version of Georges Bizet’s Carmen at the close of the
Hilbert Circle Theatre season. In the Printing Partners Pops Series, Maestro Jack Everly is proud to share
the stage with music legend and American icon, Kenny Rogers, and the eclectic 12-piece ensemble, Pink
Martini. Returning this season is the ISO’s Duke Energy 317 Series, a collection of classical concerts and
programs presented in the communities of Hendricks County and Greater Greenwood. Upcoming special
events include the 30th anniversary of IPL Yuletide Celebration and the 20th anniversary celebration of the
ISO’s youth and family development program, the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra.

MUSIC IN MY LIFE
“In preparation for a performance, I like to be absolutely
confident that I can reproduce the composer’s intent with the
piece.” -Hua Jin, Violin
Hua Jin was born in northern China and went to the Central
National Conservatory of Music in Beijing at the age of 12 to
study music education. At 15, she won a prize at the Chinese
National Youth Violin Competition. She earned a Bachelor of
Music degree at Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
In 2004, she moved to Indiana and served as associate
concertmaster of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and a
regular “sub” with the Detroit Symphony. From 2004 to 2009 Jin
was assistant concertmaster at the Fort Wayne Philharmonic.
She has been a violinist with the ISO since 2009.
What inspired you to play the violin?
I started playing the violin when I was four. My dad is a violinist, conductor, and was my first
teacher. He certainly wanted me to be a violinist. I always loved music and dancing, but he
decided when I was four that it was time for me to begin learning violin.
When did you realize you wanted to play professionally?
My father was a very strict teacher. He gave me a serious practice schedule and made sure I
was diligent in learning my instrument. When you are young, you want to be a good student,
you want to compete, and you want to practice very hard because other people tell you it’s
the right thing to do. At that time, it was mainly people telling me what to do, but through
competing I decided for myself that this is what I wanted to do. When I went to the Beijing
Conservatory I knew this would be my career.
Describe your most rewarding musical experience thus far?
In China I gained the prize of the Chinese National Youth Violin competition. That was my most
rewarding experience in China because it gave me the opportunity to tour and do solo work.
When I moved to the states at age 24, I got to play as a soloist in Michigan, which was also a
fantastic experience.
What are your hobbies?
For the last 3 years, I have been teaching for a music festival in South Korea. Sometimes I play
for an orchestra in Florida, which is mostly for fun. I also spend time teaching students of all
ages. I love to see students progress, I learn a lot from them. Besides that, most of my time is
spent with my kids. I have a daughter (14) and a son (11). In the summer, we love going to art
fairs, walking around downtown and visiting Brown County and Chicago.
What do you enjoy about the IPL Yuletide Celebration?
My favorite part about the IPL Yuletide Celebration is the energy. It is a really exciting time
of year and the IPL Yuletide Celebration is like a combination of Vegas and Christmas right in
Indianapolis! It is exciting to see patrons come to the ISO and see the orchestra in a new light.
Every concert is sold out. While many people think this may get redundant, I truly enjoy seeing
the audience full. I love to see the audience laughing and having a great time!

Whether she’s playing guitar or making sure computer programs are in sync,
Julie knows the audience wants excellence. That’s no small challenge when your

and others like her, for the water that brews
coffee and fills dog dishes. So every day
she makes sure her performance is the best
it can be, because Julie doesn’t just work for

HISTORY
IPL YULETIDE CELEBRATION
Background
Before the IPL Yuletide Celebration, The Indianapolis
Symphony Orchestra filled its December calendar with
everything from Messiah and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio to the
Nutcracker with the Butler holiday themed pops shows.
In 1986, the ISO changed gears completely and became the
first American Orchestra to create a Broadway musical style
holiday extravaganza with singing, dancing, puppetry and
other theatrical elements. The IPL Yuletide Celebration started
small, with only eight performances in the first year — and
has now grown to be the largest orchestra-produced holiday
presentation of its kind in North America, with more than
20 performances attracting more that 40,000 people each
December.
Hosts
Many noted celebrities have hosted the IPL Yuletide
Celebration: veteran comedienne and star of stage,
screen and television, Kaye Ballard (1991); 1981 Miss America
Yuletide Celebration 2005
and host of the Discover Channel’s Home Matters, Susan
(top) and 2008 (bottom).
Powell (1993); two time Tony-Award winning actress, Judy
Kaye (1994, 1995); longtime star as “The Phantom” in Broadway’s production of The Phantom of the
Opera, Ted Keegan (1999); acclaimed singer and actress who portrayed Dr. Josie Conklin on the ABS
Television’s daytime soap opera One Life To Live, Pamela Isaacs (2001); two-time Grammy Awardwinning soprano, Sylvia McNair (2003); legendary pop music icon Maureen McGovern (2009); opera
star and Indianapolis native Angela Brown, Broadway star Ben Crawford (2012, 2014); and awardwinning vocalist Sandi Patty (2000, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2010 and 2013, 2015).
Conductors
The first conductor for the IPL Yuletide Celebration was longtime Oklahoma City Philharmonic
Music Director Joel Levine (1986-1990). Following Maestro Levine were Indianapolis Opera Artistic
Director James Caraher (1991), Boston Pops Music Director Keith Lockhart (1992-1993) and current
ISO Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly (1994-present). Another noted member of the IPL Yuletide
Celebration artistic team was Broadway choreographer Mercedes Ellington, the granddaughter of
famed band leader Duke Ellington, who choreographed elaborate dance elements for the show for
10 years (1991-2000).

INTERVIEW WITH TY A. JOHNSON, Executive Producer
DEC 4-23
Ty A. Johnson, a native Hoosier, attended Indiana University
and later, University of Illinois for his graduate work. He has
been with the ISO as Senior Director of Pops Programming
and Presentations and Executive Producer of the IPL Yuletide
Celebration for over twenty years. He has worked with
Maestro Jack Everly to produce over 100 different shows for
the Printing Partners Pops Series. Ty is a bona fide Sci-Fi geek,
wine enthusiast, yogi, fitness buff and dog lover.
How will the 30th anniversary of the IPL Yuletide
Yuletide Executive Producer Ty Johnson
Celebration be different?
and Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly.
For the 30th anniversary we will be including a lot of great
material that people have loved in the past. We’ve reinvented
a lot of things but also have kept several classic aspects. This year, for the 30th anniversary, we have
a new Yuletide Jukebox! and a larger, extraordinarily talented cast. We also will be introducing the
magical holiday transformations of David and Dania, and many other holiday surprises.
What do you love most about creating the IPL Yuletide Celebration?
I enjoy the creativity of producing this show. It is a blank canvas—we get to paint on that canvas
and make it something special for the community. I get to unite and blend the mix of highly creative
Yuletide team members—this includes designers, singers, arrangers, orchestrators, dancers, etc.
Sandi Patty has a wonderful saying that we start every performance with, in a cast huddle, behind
the curtain. “When the SHOW wins, we ALL win!” I love that sentiment because every musician,
dancer, dresser, stage manager, usher—they ALL contribute to a successful performance. Go Team
Yuletide!
When does the planning process begin?
In general, planning begins about a year in advance (securing a host requires two years of advanced
planning). Once the programming is completed, the pre-production on all the costumes, set
pieces and music begins (about eight months out). Three weeks before the opening of Yuletide is a
complete whirlwind of round-the-clock rehearsals, fittings, staging, tweaking, trouble-shooting and
a maybe a few panic attacks. But, with our amazing cast and crew, it always seems to come together!
How has the IPL Yuletide Celebration grown over the past ten years?
The IPL Yuletide Celebration was previously in four segments that were very specific. There was a
break between each segment; dance, theatrical, symphonic and choral. When I came to the ISO,
The IPL Yuletide Celebration was already beloved, but it was smaller, since there were not as many
performances. I primarily focused on integrating all the segments to be more of a variety show
starring a symphony orchestra.
I brought a strong emphasis on costuming. Our set is a unit set. We don’t have a traditional fly space.
So, what has to be bigger than life and constantly changing are the costumes. We spend a lot of
time, energy and resources on costuming. The pageantry of the show is a holiday feast for the eyes.
What was the inspiration for the ever-popular tap dancing Santas?
In 1993, I sat down with Mercedes Ellington, the choreographer at the time and Broadway
orchestrator, Michael Gibson at a studio in NYC. We wanted to do a production number that was
fun and different. Through that discussion, while Michael was at the piano, we came up with this
idea that evolved very quickly. By the end of our meeting, there was a rough arrangement with
Santa Tap as the working title. Back in the early ‘90’s, I guarantee you that none of us thought that in
2015 those Santas would still be tapping. It truly is the most requested selection of the IPL Yuletide
Celebration.

SANDI PATTY, Host
As one of the
most highlyacclaimed
performers of
our time with
five Grammy
awards, four
Billboard Music
Awards, three
platinum
records, five
gold records,
and eleven
million units
sold, Sandi Patty is simply known as “The
Voice”.
Sandi is the most awarded female vocalist
in contemporary Christian music history,
with 40 Dove Awards. She was inducted into
the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and
as an Indiana Living Legend in 2007. She
has released over 30 albums, including her
latest Dove Award winning album, The Edge
of the Divine (2010) and Everlasting (2013),
which was nominated for a Dove Award for
Inspirational Album of the Year in 2014 . In
2014 she released her brand new holiday
recording, Christmas Blessings, with exclusive
special editions in Cracker Barrel Old Country
stores and Target stores nationwide. Sandi’s
upcoming lullaby project Sweet Dreams
will be released to retailers nationwide in
partnership with Fisher Price.
Sandi was introduced to the world with her
rendition of The Star Spangled Banner during
the rededication of the Statue of Liberty in
1986. Virtually overnight, she became one
of the country’s best-loved performers. Her
version of the national anthem has become
synonymous with patriotic celebration,
including performances at A Capitol Fourth
with the National Symphony, the Indianapolis
500, the Dedication of Camp David Chapel,
and ABC’s Fourth of July Special.
26
While her thirty-year career is heavily rooted
in the gospel music industry, Sandi has had
the opportunity in more recent years to
extend her career outside the genre. Her
debut full length symphonic pops album
Broadway Stories, conducted by Maestro Jack
Everly, was released on October 18, 2011
to rave reviews. Sandi has performed with
symphonies across the country, including
the New York Pops, Boston Pops, Cincinnati
Pops, Dallas Symphony, Baltimore Symphony,
Houston Symphony, and Oklahoma City
Philharmonic. She also headlined the title
role in sold out performances of the musical
Hello, Dolly! with the Indianapolis Symphony
Orchestra, co-starring Tony Award winner
Gary Beach in January 2012.
In addition to her prolific musical career,
Sandi is also an accomplished author. For
the bestseller Broken on the Back Row, Sandi
received the 2006 Silver Angel Award. As an
author of seven books, her other titles include
Life in the Blender, Falling Forward, Layers, and
her forthcoming book, The Edge of the Divine.
Her down-to-earth style and sturdy common
sense have endeared her to Women of Faith
audiences, with whom she has traveled with
since 2005. She’s an example to all of us of
the freedom that comes from learning how
to move on, learning from her mistakes and
letting God use her in any circumstance.
“I am grateful for the many opportunities for
God has given in my life and for how he has
allowed me to spread my wings,” says Sandi.
“Singing is my way to tell my story of hope,
life and love.”
Sandi and her husband, Don, have eight
children. They currently reside in Oklahoma
City, OK. For more information about Sandi
Patty, please visit www.sandipatty.com.
DAVID & DANIA
DEC 4-23
David Michael Maas and Dania Kaseeva’s story sounds like a
fairytale brought about by the changes in the world at the dawn
of the new millennium. Both were raised in a circus; they’re
together because the Cold War ended. Both recognize the need
of the post-modern audience for continuous and rapid visual
stimulation. Together they have produced the ideal global act.
You want to see it again and again, and it packs small for the
airlines and plays big — very big. It has taken them all over the
world and brought standing ovations.
David Maas came from a show business family. His dad, Jerry,
was a concert pianist and music teacher from Norfollc, Nebraska.
Jerry Maas’ boyhood friend was Johnny Carson. Carson, who was
destined to be the king of American late-night television, gained
a measure of notoriety around rural Nebraska with his magic, and Jerry enjoyed their friendship.
Jerry previously worked with the Circus Hall of Fame. As music director he wrote musical scores
and orchestra charts. The Ringling Circus used his creative musical talents for original scores
and musical arrangements. Eventually, he became a conductor and bandmaster for the Royal
Hanneford Circus.
Dania Kaseeva, like David, grew up in the circus. She is a second-generation circus performer;
born in Rostofondon, Russia. Her mother and father were animal trainers and had a big bear act,
which Dania’s mother and brother continue to perform. In addition to working with the bears in
the center ring, Dania was trained in ballet, gymnastics and dance. Like most circus acts, Russian
girls also develop a second specialty skill for the show. Dania became an expert at twirling
hula-hoops, able to keep dozens of them whirling around her slender body. In l999, at age 21,
Dania traveled to Paris and won a gold medal for her high-energy hoop act and at the Festival
Mondial du Cirque de Demain.
The globetrotting couple has played the European circus circuit. The late ‘90s saw them at Circus
Conelli in Zurich, Switzerland and Circus Krone in Germany. They played the Tivoli amusement
park in Copenhagen and the Lido in Paris. In 2003 they played the prestigious Festival du Cirque
in Monte-Carlo. David credits the doors to the European market being opened by their FISM
1997 performance in Dresden, Germany. It was a big event for David & Dania. They were hired
to perform as part of the activities and received a standing ovation from the 2400 attendees.
They have been featured in stage shows on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. On dry land they
have done television appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, America’s Got Talent, The Ellen
DeGeneres Show, The Sally Jessie Raphael Show, and The Steve Harvey Show.

PATRICK DUPRÉ QUIGLEY, Conductor
Conductor Patrick Dupré Quigley is at the vanguard of a new generation
of young Baroque and Classical-era specialists: completely at ease at the
helm of the modern symphony orchestra while still able to create the
passionate, distinctive stylings of the Baroque and Classical sound. The
founder and artistic director of Seraphic Fire and the Firebird Chamber
Orchestra, he has also received rave reviews of his work with the music
of contemporary American composers. In addition, Quigley is the author
of a recurring column on artistic entrepreneurship for American Public
Media.
A popular artist with audiences and critics alike, the Miami Herald has
described Quigley as “A musician with a constellation of qualities rarely
found in a single conductor: an enthusiastic and audience-friendly
personal style, a scholar’s instinct for rooting out obscure but worthy
music, a scrupulous and historically informed approach to works that
span a wide range of musical periods, an ability to bring out the best in his talented platoon . . . and a
showman’s canny sense of how to appeal to audiences.”
Under Quigley’s direction, Seraphic Fire has released fourteen recordings on the Seraphic Fire Media label
(founded by Quigley), with an additional recording forthcoming in 2016. Quigley was nominated for two
2012 Grammy Awards. He was the only conductor in the world to be nominated for two separate projects
that year, and Seraphic Fire was the only choir in North and South America to receive a nomination.
The 2015-2016 season sees guest engagements with the New World Symphony in a program of Reich,
Ligeti, and Monteverd; covering The Cleveland Orchestra’s performances of Handel’s Messiah and touring
performances in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., of Mozart’s Requiem, Brahms’s Requiem,
and Charpentier’s Te Deum with Seraphic Fire and the Sebastians Period Orchestra.
Quigley is the recipient of the 2004 Robert Shaw Conducting Fellowship, given annually by the National
Endowment for the Arts and Chorus America to one conductor between the ages of 25 and 40 who
demonstrates the potential for a significant professional career. At 26, Quigley was the youngest person
to receive this award. Most recently, Quigley was awarded Chorus America’s Louis Botto Award for
Innovative Action and Entrepreneurial Zeal, recognizing his artistic and institution-building achievements
with Seraphic Fire.
Quigley received his Master of Music degree in conducting from the Yale School of Music and his
undergraduate degree in musicology from the University of Notre Dame. He is a graduate of the Indiana
University Center on Philanthropy’s Fundraising School.

years of their life to the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir as singing members.
The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir is proud to be one of central Indiana’s most established and
dynamic musical institutions and 2015/2016 marks its 79th season. Among the most active symphonic
choruses in the nation, this organization reaches in excess of 25,000 persons each season with more
than 25 performances and a comprehensive educational/outreach
program. The approximately 200 volunteer singers demonstrate the
Choir’s commitment to musical excellence through their talent and
dedication during each forty-two-week season. The organization
is led by a professional staff and governed by a volunteer Board of
Directors.

very core of the Choir’s existence and exhibits the very best of collaborative ideals – two successfully
independent arts organizations combining their strengths to create beautifully lasting musical
results. In addition to collaborative performances with the ISO, the Symphonic Choir presents its own
performances, educational initiatives and events each season. 2015-2016 marks the 14th season under
the artistic direction of Dr. Eric Stark.
Upcoming Indianapolis Symphonic Choir performances include December’s Festival of Carols,
performed at the Scottish Rite Cathedral and The Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts, as
well as Bach’s St. John Passion at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center.

MESSIAH TEXT
Messiah
George Frideric Handel
PART THE FIRST
Sinfonia (Overture)
Recitative (Tenor)
Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your
God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and
cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished,
that her iniquity is pardoned. The voice of Him
that crieth in the wilderness; prepare ye the
way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a
highway for our God.
(Isaiah 40:1-3)
Aria (Tenor)
Ev’ry valley shall be exalted, and ev’ry mountain
and hill made low; the crooked straight and the
rough places plain.
(Isaiah 40:4)
Chorus
And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and
all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of
the Lord hath spoken it.
(Isaiah 40:5)
Recitative (Bass)
Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Yet once a
little while and I will shake the heavens and the
earth, the sea and the dry land. And I will shake
all nations; and the desire of all nations shall come.
(Haggai 2:6-7)
The Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come
to His temple, even the messenger of the
covenant, whom you delight in; behold, He
shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.
(Malachi 3:1)
Aria (Alto)
But who may abide the day of His coming, and
who shall stand when He appeareth? For He is
like a refiner’s fire.
(Malachai 3:2)
Chorus
And He shall purify the sons of Levi, that
they may offer unto the Lord an offering in
righteousness.
(Malachi 3:3)
Recitative (Alto)
Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and shall call His name Emmanuel, God with us.
(Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23)
Aria (Alto) and Chorus
O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, get
thee up into the high mountain. O thou that
tellest good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up thy
voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say
unto the cities of Judah, behold your God!
(Isaiah 40:9)
Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory
of the Lord is risen upon thee.
(Isaiah 60:1)
Recitative (Bass)
For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and
gross darkness the people; but the Lord shall
arise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen
upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy
light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.
(Isaiah 60:2-3)
Air (Bass)
The people that walked in darkness have seen
a great light; and they that dwell in the land of
the shadow of death, upon them hath the light
shined.
(Isaiah 9:2)
Chorus
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is
given, and the government shall be upon
his shoulder; and His name shall be called
wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the
everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.
(Isaiah 9:6)
Recitative (Soprano)
There were shepherds abiding in the field,
keeping watch over their flocks by night.
(Luke 2:8)
Aria (Soprano)
And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them,
and the glory of the Lord shone round about
them, and they were sore afraid.
(Luke 2:9)

And the angel said unto them: “Fear not, for
54

which shall be to all people. For unto you is
born this day in the city of David a Saviour,
which is Christ the Lord”.
(Luke 2:10-11)
Aria (Soprano)
And suddeny there was with the angel, a
multitude of the heavenly host, praising God,

earth, good will towards men.”
(Luke 2:14)

and He shall speak peace unto the heathen.
(Zechariah 9:9-10)

the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then shall the
lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the
dumb shall sing.
(Isaiah 35:5-6)

He shall feed His flock like a shepard; and He
shall gather the lambs with His arm, and carry
them in His bosom, and gently lead those that
are with young.
(Isaiah 40:11)

Him that are heaven laden, and He will give you

unto your souls.
(Matthew 11:28-29)
DEC 13

They shoot out their lips, and shake their heads,
saying,
(Psalm 22:7)

He trusted in God that he would deliver him:
Let him deliver him, if he delight in them

MESSIAH TEXT
Aria (Bass)
Why do the nations so furiously rage together,
and why do the people imagine a vain thing?
the Kings of the earth rise up, and the rulers

Chorus
Let us break their bonds asunder, and cast away
their yokes from us.

(Revelation 19:16)

For now is Christ risen from the dead, the first
fruits of them that sleep.
(I Corinthians 15:20)

made alive.

The trumpet shall shound, and the dead shall be

ever and ever. Amen.

THE NATIONAL BANK OF INDIANAPOLIS
WHY WE GIVE
At The National Bank of Indianapolis, we believe in enhancing our community through
partnership. And so, we are very pleased to be a sponsor of IPL’s Yuletide Celebration. We
recognize that our partnership with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the IPL
Yuletide Celebration is a natural one. For 30 years, the IPL Yuletide Celebration has been a
favorite holiday tradition for many in our community. In a similar fashion, The National
Bank of Indianapolis has its own tradition of developing long-lasting relationships with our
clients. Our partnership with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is fitting, as we truly
believe that banking is an art form and with each client we serve, we remain dedicated to
creating masterpieces in service.
The National Bank of Indianapolis was founded in 1993 with the vision of providing an
extremely high level of specialized service in a very personalized manner to professionals,
executives, businesses, and nonprofit organizations. Today, through its dedication to
superior service and through its support of the greater Indianapolis community, the Bank
has grown to be our city’s largest locally-owned national bank. The Bank directs it resources
to projects that strengthen our local community. Our employees, officers, and directors are
all dedicated to supporting our local community through participation in a broad array of
arts and cultural, educational , healthcare, religious, and social service organizations.
Greater Indianapolis is our stage—and the IPL Yuletide Celebration is a cherished tradition of
this holiday season.

HILBERT CIRCLE THEATRE INFORMATION
Welcome to the Hilbert Circle Theatre, home of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
We are delighted you are with us and hope you enjoy the performance.
Box Office
For questions about parking, tickets,
subscriber benefits and will call, visit our Box
Office at the main entrance to the theater
(off of Monument Circle) or the satellite Box
Office at the east entrance (off Scioto Street).
Coat Checks and Restrooms
Coat checks are located on the main floor and
on the Oval Promenade on the second floor.
The second floor can be reached by staircases
on the east and west end of the theater or
elevators near the main entrance. Accessible
restrooms are located on both floors.
Emergency
In the event of an emergency, please use the
nearest exit (marked by lighted signs). This is
your shortest route out of the theater.
Ushers
For questions about Hilbert Circle Theatre
accessibility, first aid and lost and found,
please see any usher. Ushers are here to
answer your questions and to make your
concert experience enjoyable.
Subscriber Hotline
If you are a subscriber and have any ticketing
needs, please call the Subscriber Hotline at
317.236.2040, or email the ISO at subscriber@
IndianapolisSymphony.org. This dedicated
hotline is staffed during normal business
hours by our Customer Care Representatives.
You may also leave a message after hours,
and a representative will respond promptly.
Beyond the Concert
Attend The J. K. Family Foundation Words on
Music one hour before every Lilly Classical
Series concert to hear from conductors and
musicians performing that evening. Grab
a drink and mingle with friends and ISO
musicians after select evening concerts
during Reverb.
Also, join us for a behind-the-scenes
discussion with special guests during First
Mondays at the ISO. For information, please
email firstmondays@IndianapolisSymphony.
org.
Parking Garage Attached to Hilbert Circle Theatre
Express Parking Garage is open on
the west side of Pennsylvania Street
between Market and Washington
Streets. A canopy connects the garage
to the Hilbert Circle Theatre lobby,
giving you a close and convenient
parking option. For evening concerts,
pay on your way in to save the time
and trouble of waiting in line after the
concert.
For our Coffee Concert patrons, parking
is limited; therefore, we recommend
garages at the Circle Centre Mall.
For more information, contact the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra at
32 East Washington Street, Suite 600, Indianapolis, IN 46204, visit us online
at IndianapolisSymphony.org or call the Hilbert Circle Theatre Box Office at
317.639.4300 or the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra at 317.262.1100.
We welcome your comments at [email protected]!
