1. Say goodbye to old clothes
This may not be easy, but it’s necessary. Tossing or donating old clothes
is an important part of making room in your closet.
If you’re having trouble deciding what to get rid of, ask yourself these
questions:
•
Have you worn it in the last two years?
•
Does it have any sentimental value? Is it worth storing?
•
Is it two sizes too small? Two sizes too big?
•
Would you buy it today?
2. Stack smartly
When stacking items, organize them by garment type (e.g. sweaters,
turtlenecks, short-sleeved items, etc.).
That way, you won’t have to unfold each piece individually in order to
pull out what you want to wear.
Other stacking tips include:
•
Stacks should be no more than 9” in height (this prevents clothes
from looking flat or wrinkly)
•
Heaviest items should be at the bottom and light items at the top
•
Label each stack; then, when new items are to be added, you’ll know
where they go
Buying a new home in Hamilton or Halton gives you the benefit of city
living with country life just a short drive away.

3. Zip it up and button it up
Always zip up pants and button up your shirts,
blouses or sweaters before putting them away in
your closet.
This will keep them from slipping, falling of
hangers or becoming twisted and tangled with
other items.
4. Never overstuff
It may be tempting to shove every possible piece of clothing into
your closet, but the reality is that it can only hold so much – and
be effective while doing it.
If you find yourself with too many items, consider purchasing
under-the-bed storage containers or an additional clothing rack
to keep those out-of-closet clothes neat and organized.
Here’s something else to consider: clothes which are carefully
tucked away can last up to 10 months to 10 years longer than items
which are just shoved into a closet that has no room for them.
5. Get new hangers
Mismatched hangers in the closet don’t seem like
a big issue, but they actually end up wasting space
because they’re not all the same size and shape.
Purchase new hangers (hint: the slim kind work
really well) because everything will be uniform and
you’ll get the absolute most from your closet space.

6. Hang away
The more items you can hang in your closet, the better.
That’s because you’re more likely to wear hanging
garments which are easily accessible (and they’ll last
longer too).
Follow these helpful hanging strategies to get the most
from your closet space:
•
For the double-hang area, hang the shortest clothes
on the top rod
•
Place the bottom rod as high as possible without
having it interfere with the clothes on the top rod
•
Use the extra space on the floor for handy storage bins
7. Shoe storage strategies
Installing a hanging shoe rack or dedicated shelving is a
great way to keep your shoes paired up and in excellent
condition.
Plus, you can maximize your shoe storage space by:

•
Placing two pairs of slim shoes (like flats or
flip-flops) per cubby/storage space
•
Don’t try to shove a pair of large shoes into a small
space; dedicate one storage unit per shoe and make
sure they’re always storedside-by-side

8. Put a mirror in your closet
If possible, place a mirror in your closet and use it
when selecting your outfit for the day.
Think about it: If you’re getting dressed in the exact
same spot where you pick your clothes, chances are
you’ll be more inclined to neatly put away things you
don’t want to wear, instead of just chucking them on
the floor or bed as you move on to the next item.
9. Take advantage of your closet doors
Things like over-the-door racks or hooks are an efficient way to store items like:
10. Install closet lighting
Not only does closet lighting look cool, it also lets you
see into the back reaches of your closet.
So instead of flipping through clothes haphazardly –
or throwing them on the bed – just turn on a light to
exactly what you have, and where it’s located.
