Jill Bayers Hotchkiss We are in the thick of bull sale season in our area and they’ve been going really well. There is renewed interest in HereJill Hotchkiss ford cattle in the Dakotas and Midwest. Of course it doesn’t hurt to have $18 wheat and $5 corn! Efficiency, temperament, fertility, longevity, carcass traits and eating quality along with maternal qualities of Herefords are getting more attention from commercial producers. Of course the added benefit of hybrid vigor or heterosis in a crossbreeding program is the equivalent of FREE POUNDS at weaning. I think a lot of commercial cattlemen are really weighing these benefits and realizing they have a great deal to gain by using Herefords. We’ve all been attending sales the last month but Marc has been the Published by: Hereford America, Inc. • HC 3, Box 38 • Reva, SD 57651 Herefords Thrive in Rugged, Mountain Conditions at Strang Herefords Editor’s Note: Hereford America recently visited with Mary Strang about their highmountain Hereford operation and here is their story. James Carmichael Memorial Scholarship Winners Announced A scholarship fund was recently established in memory of Hereford breeder James “Bubby” Carmichael, Meadow, SD, who passed away last fall. One $500 scholarship was to be awarded each year at the Cattlemen’s Ball during the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City. However, this year there was a tie and two scholarships were awarded. James Carmichael, Meadow, SD, was a lifelong Hereford breeder and (continued on page 3) Carmichael Scholarship winners Tyler Van Winkle and Sara Van Newkirk with Dorothy Carmichael. Bart and Mary Strang, and their family, have proven the ruggedness and reliability of Hereford cattle for 46 years. In 1962, Bart started their purebred operation with 10 registered heifers he purchased from Von Forrell Herefords in Wheatland, Wyo. The family moved from the Carbondale/ Basalt area to the beautiful White River Valley in 1973 where “Strang Herefords” has prospered for the last 35 years but where cattle must be resilient and hardy in order to thrive. Winters have been known to drop more than 150 inches of snow and the temperatures can dip to 50 below zero. Initially the operation included commercial as well as registered Herefords, but when the four Strang daughters went to college, Bart and Mary lost their ‘cowboys’ and reverted to strictly registered cattle. The girls, (Mary, Ellen, Lisa & Sarah) were an integral part of the operation growing up and Bart always claimed he’d rather work cattle with them than anyone. They did everything from irrigating, f e n c i n g , haying, chores to fitting cattle for the National Western Stock Show. For twenty-six years the Strang family exhibited carloads/pens of Hereford bulls as well as a number of their herd sires; and these trips to the National Western were (cont. on pg. 4) PRST STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID Bismarck, ND Permit 280 The Elkington sale was to be held on a Friday near Idaho Falls, ID and the weather was scheduled to change, in fact, a Byron Bayers blizzard was forecast, so Pauline and I decided to travel the 200 miles the day before the sale. As is our usual agenda on trips to ID, we travel to Lima, a small town about 90 miles from home, and have breakfast at a small café, Jan’s, owned by a person we know. It is a good stop, on the interstate highway, and located just as you start the long climb to the Idaho state line. We talked to the waitress about the road conditions and she said that she heard from a trucker that it was not too good on the Idaho side. HEREFORD AMERICA • March 2008 Scholarships (continued from page 1) cattleman. James Carmichael was a quiet man, very devoted to his family and friends. He had a great appreciation of all livestock, but especially his Hereford cattle. He very much appreciated the quiet, peaceful range country they lived in. He was honored as Stockman of the Year by the Black Hills Stock Show in 1997. James passed away in September 2007. The Carmichael family decided to dedicate a scholarship to the memory of James Carmichael. His widow, Dorothy, and his children wish to honor his name and memory by giving young people that have a love for Hereford cattle and agriculture an opportunity to further their education in the hope of providing strong leadership for the agricultural world in the future. High school seniors and those already attending colleges or universities were eligible to apply and had to be residents of South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming or Nebraska. The first scholarships were presented on the evening of January 30, 2008 at the Stockman’s Banquet and Ball during the Black Hills Stock Show. The first recipient is Sara Van Newkirk, Oshkosh, NE. She is the daughter of Joe and Cyndi Van Newkirk, and is a senior at Garden County High School, Oshkosh. She has two older brothers in college. Sara is a third generation Hereford breeder whose family has been in the Hereford business for over 100 years. This young lady has worked at a number of jobs in order to raise money to purchase some registered Hereford heifers. She went to her local banker on her own and arranged a loan to purchase a group of bred heifers. She put her car and the cattle she already owned up for collateral and she is well on her way to paying off that loan. In addition to raising Hereford cattle Sara’s list of activities is long. She is involved and she is a leader. Sara plans to attend the University of Wyoming this fall and major in Animal Science. www.herefordamerica.com • 3 The other scholarship recipient is Tyler Van Winkle, Tyndall, SD. He is the son of Randy and Lisa Weier, and is a senior at Bon Homme high school, Tyndall, SD. Tyler got started with Herefords at a very young age, along with his dad. They bought their first Herefords in 1992, the Tyler was born. America’s No. 1 Dams of Distinction herd. (Based on efficiency.) At the age of five Tyler lost his father in an unfortunate farm related accident. Tyler’s mother did not let the dream of Hereford cattle die and continued on with the cow/calf operation. Tyler is the oldest of three boys and was always the helper. 4-H, FFA and the Jr. Hereford Association have all been a big part of this young man’s life. Tyler’s mom remarried and the family works together in their small but growing Hereford and farming operation. Tyler plans to attend SDSU this fall majoring in Animal Science and pre-vet. Each year, the American Hereford Association scans its database looking for Hereford dams with high levels of fertility, performance and longevity. Rausch Hereford dams are found most often. 377 head of Rausch Hereford Mother Cows have qualified for the Dams of Distinction list. Superintendent grandchildren in later years. Mary describes their first years in Denver when she and Bart were definitely the “go-fers” while the girls learned how to fit from neighboring exhibitors and their herdsmen. The girls were, also, very active in the Colorado Junior Hereford Association and 4-H. Each had some registered cows whose get went a long way to putting them through college; and by the time they finished their 4-H careers, they’d shown a total of 74 fat Hereford steers. In 1991 the Strangs introduced a small herd of registered Black Angus cattle to their operation. Their goal has been to develop functional Hereford and Angus cattle for high altitudes with low Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (or PAP as it is called). The Hereford breed is known as one of the best for low PAP, but it is more of a challenge to breed consistently low PAP Angus. Although it is not an exact science, PAP is the only tool the industry has in trying to avoid brisket disease at high altitudes. To this end, the Strangs are working with Dr. Tim Holt, DVM, at Colorado State University. Dr. Holt is an authority on Pulmonary Arterial Pressure and concurs that an animal’s PAP is significantly affected by his/her genetics, environment and, to a lesser degree, nutrition. Genetic improvement has always been the focal point for Bart & Mary. The bottom line requires that they produce functional cattle that will perform efficiently in the many climates and under the varying management practices of their diverse group of buyers. To this end, they’ve built their breeding programs on cattle with a balance of traits (as single trait selection usually means a sacrifice of fertility and/or structural correctness). The program focuses on muscular, long cattle with fertility, easy fleshing ability, milking ability, neat bags with small teats, structural correctness, carcass traits, moderate birth weights and optimal dimension to facilitate calving ease. Strang’s Hereford cattle are also known for eye pigment, something Bart started breeding for in 1993 with his purchase of goggle eyed HR Red Adv 233 2ET. A year later JNHR 414 Diamnd 164D joined the breeding program. This goggle eyed sire’s legacy is the set of females in today’s herd. Currently the program is one of (continued on page 6) HEREFORD AMERICA • March 2008 www.herefordamerica.com • 5 E RIBSTONE STANDARD JR ET • 1/27/04 • 42524087 STANDARD RIBSTONE 16E STANDARD 16E RIBSTONE 64H STANDARD LASS 23E K RIBSTONE STANDARD 27L K 61Z SUPER LAD 45D K 45D SUPER LADY 78H K 83W RED LADY 18C JV L1 DOMINO 213 JV SHIRLEY 414 [DOD] JV SHIRLEY 256 CL 1 DOMINO 769 JV SHIRLEY 028 BB PATRIOT 0293 JV SHIRLEY 724 CED BW WW YW MM M&G CEM SC FAT REA IMF BMI CEZ BII CHB +1.3 +4.5 +60 +100 +24 +54 -0.5 +1.1 +.009 +.30 +.14 +$19 +$15 +$16 +$30 B B B B B 40P son RIBSTONE RIBSTONE RIBSTONE RIBSTONE RIBSTONE JR JR JR JR JR 702 703 704 716 755 Sire of Dam: B Evan Mischief 7811 BW 2.6 WW 52 YW 80 MM 24 M&G 50 REA .19 IMF .05 CHB $23 Sire of Dam: MC Ranger 9615 BW 3.5 WW 51 YW 84 MM 24 M&G 50 REA .26 IMF .05 CHB $23 Sire of Dam: B Kernel Mischief Jr. BW 3.0 WW 52 YW 79 MM 20 M&G 46 REA .16 IMF .05 CHB $23 Sire of Dam: Kernel Evan Mischief BW 3.7 WW 46 YW 71 MM 20 M&G 43 REA .15 IMF .02 CHB $19 Sire of Dam: Anchor 29F 8J BW 5.1 WW 55 YW 90 MM 15 M&G 42 REA .30 IMF .06 CHB $25 B ANCHOR HERMAN 748 Sire of Dam: Feltons 517 BW 2.2 WW 43 YW 73 MM 20 M&G 42 REA .11 IMF .07 CHB $20 Sire: Anchor 40P 80P s B RANGER RELOAD 717 son Sire: LaGrand Reload 80P ET Sire of Dam: MC Montana Ranger B MISCHIEF RELOAD 724 Sire of Dam: B Evan Domino 913 Sire: LaGrand Reload 80P ET Sire of Dam: HH Dakota Mischief ak B GENERAL 722 Bre oughSire: Feltons Break Through r h T son BW 5.3 WW 58 YW 93 MM 20 M&G 50 REA .55 IMF .04 CHB $26 BW 4.1 WW 47 YW 81 MM 21 M&G 45 REA .38 IMF .02 CHB $20 BW 4.4 WW 35 YW 52 MM 23 M&G 41 REA .02 IMF .05 CHB $14 TRI BAR M 20X DR D 25D J-B ANCHOR HERMAN 37H J-B Z479 MISS TIER 3 32C ANCHOR BRAXTON ANCHOR 33L ANCHOR 40E 69H REMITALL KEYNOTE 20X TRI BAR M 19W MISS 30Z VESCOVI Z479 J-B 58T MISS TIER 2 28Y VESCOVI D149 J-BAR-B ANCHOR 27A 1C ANCHOR 19C 40E ANCHOR B183 87D CED BW WW YW MM M&G CEM SC FAT REA IMF BMI CEZ BII CHB -0.7 +3.5 +52 +90 +16 +42 +1.9 +0.6 +.011 +.22 +.11 +$15 +$13 +$13 +$24 Byron & Pauline Bayers P.O. (continued from page 1) Private Treaty Bull Sale Beginning March 1 cattle in our trucks so I am very familiar with possible conditions, and I wondered just what we might encounter, but little did I realize what was ahead. As we motored up the highway by the Snowline Grazing Assn. property, the wind and snow became more intense and we were rapidly working into a real blizzard. At this time we were about 5 miles from the top of Monida Pass where you enter into Idaho at about 7,500 feet of altitude. Suddenly all of the instrument lights on the car went crazy and all of the red warning lights came on and the warning buzzers went off. By that time we were beyond the last chance for a turn around and visibility was near zero. I thought the car had a serious malfunction so I found a wide spot on the road and stopped and called the Onstar people. I asked them to diagnose the car and gave them my trouble report. Within a few minutes they reported back that all functions seemed normal except the instruments and so we had no choice but to journey on the last 100 miles. We traveled about 30 miles at 10 to 25 miles per hour because at times you would have to stop to find the road edge. Everyone had their flasher lights on and thankfully everyone was careful — except two big over the road semis, who passed us in this condition and when they did, we could not see anything for several minutes. The temperature by this time had fallen to -5 degrees below. We journeyed into Idaho Falls in these conditions and checked into the hotel and called Elkingtons, who I found out had been trying to call me. I turned off the phone when the driving conditions were dangerous. Elkingtons told me that they had debated for two days if they should have the sale but several people who were already in Idaho Falls told them if they cancelled, they would have to go home and probably not come back and one was a volume bull buyer. I looked the cattle over and marked my catalog for a man who needed me to buy some bulls for him, and in the five below zero weather, the chill was evident. While looking over the cattle I came upon and met Richard Snedden from Maricopa, CA. It was a real pleasure to meet Richard and we had some very nice visits before the sale. Snedden bought the top selling bull the next day for his California herd. The Elkingtons made the decision to go with the sale as scheduled and hoped the roads, or at least some of them, would be open the next day. Well, the next day was much better and many of the people who wanted to attend made the trip, and the field staff from all the publications did a great job of working to call prospective buyers and in the end the sale was much better than we could have thought on the previous day. This was a good set of cattle and a tough break for these folks. We came home in somewhat better conditions, at least we could see the road. I had the warning horn disconnected but no answer to the instrument problems. The shop in Idaho Falls was puzzled. At least the car ran alright and we kept the tank full. The next week I had to head back into Idaho for the Frank Rodgers sale in Buhl, which is about 270 miles beyond where we went the week before. Pauline gave up on me saying that the last trip was enough for her, so I headed out solo. The dealer in Dillon wanted to try and fix my problem before I left but after two and one-half hours in the shop I told them, “I have to go as I still have 400 miles to go today!” So without instruments in the car, down the road I motored. Again the road was good to the Idaho line and this time it was mostly real slick and icy, except from Idaho Falls to Pocatello where I hit the ground blizzard again and very poor visibility. But I journeyed on and arrived in Buhl at Frank’s about 4:00 in the PM. Frank was in the same situation as Elkington’s the week before. Some roads were already closed and the storm was coming. Frank felt he had no choice, he had to go on with the sale. After looking the cattle over I drove in to Buhl to the motel and ate dinner at Buhl’s finest (just fair) and after calling several people I hit the sack as this old body was tired from the long trip. The next morning I looked out and the car was covered with about eight inches of Cow herd is our factory - raised under range conditions all females calve as twos. I thought, here we go again! I got out to Frank’s and the place was pretty quiet and stayed that way until about lunch time, (it is funny how people seem to get to a sale just before lunch) when about 100 people began wandering in. The start was held up by Auctioneer Butch Booker until the late comers could see the cattle and have lunch. Again, this good group of cattle sold well in view of all of the weather problems. Again the roads that morning were closed in all directions for a time, thus discouraging the traveling buyers. The road to Pocatello was closed that morning but I thought by evening it should be open, so after the sale I filled the tank and headed down the road. I made it into Pocatello and to the Ramada, where I encountered a man from Montana who just came down from Helena. He said, “We just made it through Monida Pass and it is a mess, they closed it right behind us! There is a six car pile up on the northbound side and it will probably be closed all night!” I then went into the Ramada to check in and five truck drivers with UPS were getting rooms. I asked if they had road problems and they said, yes, the road is closed to Salt Lake City. Well, so goes the saga of one of the Hereford America roadrunners! The story isn’t over yet so bear with me. The next morning I arose early and checked the weather. Snow with 40 mile per hour winds, icy road conditions to the north. Oh well, I need to get home so I hit the interstate. The conditions made the travel slower but just before Idaho Falls the roads were better so I sped up some and wheeled through Idaho Falls at a good clip, and just after I moved around a curve in the road I hit some sheer ice and encountered several cars creeping over it. I slowly braked the car and was fortunate enough to miss a car on the side of the road, he viewing a car that had just slipped off the road. Then in the next 20 miles, three big semi rigs had overturned from the icy, windy conditions. I was appreciative that I had put tires on the car with steel pins in them. (In fact Marc and I had done this in Canada when we had traction trouble there.) These “studs” really help the traction. The troubling Monida Pass HEREFORD AMERICA • March 2008 Jill’s Editorial... (continued from page 1) big road warrior going to 13 sales in the last three weeks. Dad had some harrowing travels over icy Idaho roads to get to sales and as I write this he’s headed to Idaho again. The flight he refers to in his editorial I was on and remember quite well, at least from a kid’s perspective. But I’m here to write about it too as is he. I think I was about 10 and we were flying to Oregon with our whole family and my aunt Jean. I’m sure his memory on this one is better than mine but I think we were going to see my cousin (Jean’s daughter) and go to what was then called the All American Hereford Expo at Stone Ranch. All of us kids, Kathy, Rich and I were really excited to be going to Expo. I’m not quite older than dirt but I think that might have been one of the first Expos. Well we were piled in the 310 and flying from Montana over the Cascades into Oregon when all the instruments Byron’s Editorial... (continued from page 10) was cleared of the wrecks by the time I passed over it and I pushed on home thinking, “You know I have to go back twice more this winter over this danged Monida Pass.” Of course still no instruments, so when I got home I called the Service Manager in Dillon for GM products and said this has got to be fixed. He said, “Byron, this is a deal we have not seen before so leave the car and we will find the problem.” After calling around to all the experts at GM for two days, they found the problem. The module in the air bags went bad, (that light was on too) and that affected the rest of the car computer to destroy the instrument readings and warning lights. Everything is fine now but you wonder about this world of computers. Marc and Jill, and the other reps from all of the publications go through this all winter like I did on these two trips but I hope they don’t lose all of their car instruments, too. I had that happen one day in our Cessna 310 airplane when I was in the weather and lost all my flight instruments but one. I will tell you about that another day, but I will give you a little clue, I am writing to tell about it! The sales have been very good in general throughout the area we have covered. The top-end of the sales in many cases are bulls going to commercial customers at prices many of the purebred breeders are not willing to pay. In all cases the cow herd is black! www.herefordamerica.com • 11 went. The air was blue for just a little while when the gravity of the situation set in. We started taking on a little bit of ice. In flying that is definitely not a good thing and can severely affect the plane’s ability to stay in the air if it gets very bad. Shortly thereafter (it probably didn’t seem short for the pilot and after all I was one of the passengers) we were able to start descending from the Cascades and the icing abated. I’m not sure when the instruments finally came back but we had them in time to navigate and land at the airport. I’m sure Dad will tell the rest of that story in another issue. We believe that the cattleman wants a healthy, sound animal that is able to breed up to forty head of cows in a breeding season. Obviously, in order to do that, the bull in question has to have many qualities including: flesh ability, structural soundness, and high libido just to name a few. We always have this in mind when we raise our bulls and keep only our best. Our cattle are middle of the road frame type and are grown without creep. Grover Jelden, 90, of rural Harrisburg, OR, died December 17, 2007 from pneumonia. He was much loved and cherished by family and friends and wellknown for his cattle herd on Jelden Hereford Ranch in the beautiful Willamette Valley in Oregon. The Jelden name is also remembered in the neighboring communities of Everly, Iowa, where Grover and his wife, Ora, have been leasing out the 320 acre farm that Grover grew up on. Grover was born in Everly, IA, to John and Sophia Jelden in 1917. His father, John, was very proud of Grover’s abilities and trusted Grover with his livestock business and daily affairs early on. At age 11, Grover chauffeured his dad to Sioux City, IA, on a business trip. Sioux City is about 100 miles from the Jelden Farm in Everly, a long way for a young boy to drive! Grover was a necessity to his dad on shipping days to Chicago. He was agile and hard-working and valued for his ability to see, at a glance, which animals were ready for market and which were not. His father was a livestock buyer and was well-respected. Grover liked to reflect on the 20 hour “day” when they received and loaded 66 train cars of hogs, 20 cars of cattle and a couple cars of whole oats. Imagine loading those 4,000 squealing hogs! In 1942, at age 25, Grover married his true love, Ora Schumann, from Hartley, IA, in Omaha, NE. They settled in Everly where Grover owned and operated the Farmer’s Elevator, along with being his dad’s righthand man. Tired of the hectic pace, the couple moved to the Black Hills, Custer, SD, where they owned and operated a ranch for a few years. They had expanded their (continued from page 11) of people on that flight praying because everything just seemed to come back together and the rest of our trip was safe and uneventful. That’s my recollection of the trip but I’d be willing to bet Dad has a different version of the story. It’s sort of interesting but when I was growing up our family flew a lot and it was mostly to Hereford events. My brother and sister are 5 and 4 years older than me so they, correction, my brother, always thought it was really funny to push the younger sister into the window while banking. (That’s a steep turn for you non-fliers.) For a 5 year old that’s pretty traumatic! I guess we all survived it and we made it to some great Hereford events when we were kids. I’ve been to several sales this year and have been fairly fortunate with the roads and the travel situations. We don’t do much flying in the winter because you never know what the weather is going to be like along the way or when you get to your destination. I haven’t been to as many sales as usual because most of the time I’m chained to the desk working on ads and the newspaper and fielding a lot of phone calls and e-mails. We’ve all had some enjoyable and interesting conversations with a lot of you. Almost every day I have questions or family with the birth of a son, Monty, in 1944 and a daughter, Valerie, in 1946. Now Grover and Ora were asked to take over Grover’s dad’s farm at Everly, which they did despite the sadness of leaving many new friends and the beauty of the pine trees. Grover became avidly interested in registered horned Herefords and in ten years developed a top-notch herd through linebreeding and a trained eye for quality and conformation. Grover and Ora and family would sell carloads of bulls at the Denver show and sale. When John Jelden, Grover’s father, died the Jeldens decided to disperse their 250 head of Herefords and move. The successful dispersion was January 3, 1959 and the family moved to the Oregon ranch where Grover and Ora have lived until Grover’s recent death. Grover enjoyed building another purebred herd of Herefords in Oregon, showing at the State Fair in Portland. The Monty Jelden family is still in the cattle business and of course all wish Grover was here to see the new crop of calves. Grover is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ora Jelden; son Monty and wife Char Jelden of Harrisburg; daughter Valerie Weaver of Lebanon, OR; grandchildren, Amber, Casse, Tessi, and Travis and their spouses; great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Michael, Garrett, Hunter, Duran, and Meguire; many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Grover’s life and influences carry on with much appreciation for his untiring devotion to his family, God, and the self-integrity he believed in. It seems like there is still a lot of confusion about the issue. Dr. Jon Beever, University of Illinois, is the lead researcher and isolated the epilepsy gene in cattle. We thank Dr. Beever for his dedication to the breed and to this particular genetic defect. There are now tests for epilepsy and the diluter gene. If you have lines that might be affected it would be in your best interest, your customers’ best interests and the breed’s to test for these defects and eliminate any carriers. If you have questions call Jack Ward, AHA’s director of breed improvement at 816-842-3757 or Dr. Beever at 217-333-4194. Breeders, don’t stick your head in the sand! Had there been tests like this in the early days of dwarfism and other defects, it would have saved many breeders a lot of anguish, pain, money and genetics that could have been used. Still our breed is miles ahead of others as far as the number of genetic defects. We have very few compared to some other breeds who have old problems resurfacing. We don’t want that to happen in the Hereford breed. As seedstock producers you need to seriously consider the tools available to you and use them proactively. — JBH HEREFORD AMERICA • March 2008 www.herefordamerica.com • 13 Semen for sale in both the U.S. and CANADA. HEREFORD AMERICA • March 2008 www.herefordamerica.com • 15 NEW BVD VACCINES: What’s the Story? New diagnostic tests have opened up a range of possibilities for the control of Bovine Virus Diarrhea (BVD) in cattle that simply did not exist a few years ago. Now there are a number of new BVD vaccines available that will also help producers control this costly disease. Refresher course—what problems does the BVD virus cause? The BVD virus can cause a wide spectrum of disease problems. BVD virus infection can be fairly mild to fatal. In well cared for cattle it can cause diarrhea, with damage starting in the mouth and extending throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Hence, the name: Bovine Virus Diarrhea. BVD is also a major cause of respiratory disease in young cattle going into stocker operations, backgrounder operations, and feedlots. It can cause abortions or reproductive failure in cows. One of the most important problems caused by BVD is the Persistently Infected (PI) animal. These PI cattle are actually infected with the BVD virus before they are born — at about 80-100 days of gestation (before 125 days) in most cases. Many of these calves are born alive but cannot develop any immune response or protection against the BVD virus. They are sub-optimal performers (some obvious, some not). They also shed billions of virus particles every day in their saliva, urine, and feces. They act as the “Typhoid Mary” for the entire herd — infecting and re-infecting other cattle in the herd and causing continued illness in the entire group of cattle. What do we need to remember to prevent BVD? The most important points to control and prevention of BVD are (1) adequate vaccination of young cattle and replacement cattle, (2) annual vaccination (boosters) for the herd, (3) prevent the introduction of PI cattle, and (4) elimination of any PI cattle from the herd. How do the new vaccines help? As listed above two of the 4 most important control points for BVD have to do with vaccination. We have recognized for some time that the BVD virus mutates rapidly and that there are many possible strains of the BVD virus in nature. The fact that this virus can change so easily creates a bigger challenge for vaccines. There are type 1 and type 2 BVD viruses and also subtypes, i.e. 1b, 2a, etc. The new vaccines have included more than one sub-type and this helps to better protect the cattle against BVD infection and disease. Another important control point is the prevention of PI cattle. Some of the vaccines have been developed and tested to provide fetal protection. That is to say, vaccinating the cow or heifer can protect the calf from becoming infected before 125 days of gestation (pregnancy). How well do these vaccines work? A recent study looked at that very question. In this study, there were 30 pregnant beef heifers that were comingled with 4 adult cows which were PI’s (the Typhoid Marys we talked about earlier). Fifteen of the 30 pregnant heifers had been vaccinated with a killed BVD vaccine (BVD types 1a and 2) prior to breeding. The other 15 heifers were non-vaccinated controls. The vaccine was a commercial vaccine also containing IBR, PI 3, BRSV, and Lepto 5 way fractions. Of the 15 non-vaccinated control heifers, one aborted and 14 had calves that were infected with the BVD virus when they were taken by Caesarian section. Of the 15 vaccinated heifers there were (continued on page 16) 16 • www.herefordamerica.com HEREFORD AMERICA • March 2008 (continued from page 15) only 4/15 calves that were infected with the BVD virus. What does this study tell us? First, having the 30 heifers (vaccinated and controls) housed together with 4 adult PI cows is a tremendous challenge. It takes a very good vaccine to provide any protection. In this trial the vaccine fully protected 73% of the calves and all the heifers from disease due to BVD. We learned the following: (1) this is an excellent vaccine that provides very good protection in the face of a very stiff challenge, (2) no vaccine is perfect, and (3) prevention of PI’s can be as important as prevention of clinical disease. What else do I need to do? The new vaccines can be very important tools in controlling BVD; however, it is also important to keep PI’s out of your herd. The old saying, “Good fences make good neighbors” is something to remember along these lines. Avoid having your pregnant cows (particularly cows less than 4 months pregnant) come into contact with cattle from outside your herd. The stocker calves that use winter range adjacent to a spring calving herd can be a very high-risk situation. Also, have all new bulls and replacement females tested for PI status. What samples are needed for these tests? The two most common tests require either a skin sample or a serum sample. The skin sample is usually taken from the ear. The serum sample is derived from a blood sample that is allowed to clot, spun in a centrifuge and the clear serum is collected with a disposable pipette. What is the bottom line? Work with your veterinarian to select and use these new BVD vaccines in your herd to help prevent new infections. Also, consult with your veterinarian regarding testing for BVD PI in your herd, see if it makes sense for you and your operation. Make sure all new cattle coming into your herd are free of BVD — no PI cattle. In 2008, the Farm Show is being dedicated to a person who can trace his involvement to the very beginnings of the annual event. Back in the late 1940s, Jim Endres was a student at Watertown High School, then located near uptown Watertown, very close to the original site of the Farm Show in the City Auditorium. “Back in 1947-48, I was in high school in Watertown, only a block away from the Farm Show,” Endres said recently. Recalling the events that led to his first involvement in the show, Endres says the school’s agriculture teacher basically made the decision for his students. “They (the farm show organizers) needed some help moving livestock in and out,” he said. “So we helped move the cattle and hogs. “The livestock was kept in the basement, so we had to move them back and forth for the shows.” He and his wife Maxine have farmed a few miles east of Watertown for many years, raising their family and eventually turning much of the day-today operations of Willow Creek Farms over to their sons Greg and Terry. Through the years, the Endres family has been heavily involved in the livestock side of the Farm Show, first through the South Dakota Hereford Association, then Jim was directly involved in bringing swine into the livestock mix. In the 1960s, Endres was a member of the Watertown Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee, the group that organizes and puts on the Farm Show each year. “Burdette Solum was the chairman at that time and I had the idea for a gilt show,” Endres said. “He said go for it and then we had a swine show. “The (swine) breeders got (continued on page 18) HEREFORD AMERICA • March 2008 www.herefordamerica.com • 17 :FBSTPG1SPEVDJOH.BSLFU-FBEJOH)FSE4JSFT GSPN'VODUJPOBMMZTVTUBJOBCMF'FNBMFT !PRILs3PRING"ULLAND&EMALE3ALEs#HRISMAN)LL *OINUSASWEWRITETHENEXTCHAPTERINYEARSOFPRODUCINGMARKETLEADINGHERDSIRESFORTHEBEEFINDUSTRYUNDERTHE%LLIS&ARMSBANNERNEAR#HRISMAN)LLINOIS%&"EEFCARRIES ONATRADITIONOFPRODUCINGSEEDSTOCKGENETICSTHATSPANSGENERATIONSOFFAMILYCOMMITMENTTOTHE(EREFORDBREEDTHREEGENERATIONSUNDERTHE%LLIS&ARMSNAME"ORNFROM THEBEGINNINGSOF,ANTHUS3TOCK&ARMAND2(%LLIS3ONSWECONTINUETOPRODUCEFUNCTIONALANDPROlTABLE0OLLED(EREFORDAND!NGUSSEEDSTOCKGENETICSFORTHERANCHER %&"EEFISA0RACTICAL0REDICTABLEAND0ROlTABLE0ROGRAM s s s %&"EEFFEMALESAREFERTILEWITHSUSTAINABLESIZEANDSUPERIORLONGEVITYIN AMATERNALPACKAGE %&"EEFBULLSARESTILLMADETHICKANDATHLETICWITHHIGHLIBIDOAND SUPERIORCARCASSMERIT %&"EEFHASPURSUEDMODERATIONOFBIRTHWEIGHTSWITHINCREASEDLEVELSOF WEANINGGROWTH4HEFOLLOWINGTABLESHOWS%&"EEFHERDGENETICTRENDSFORTHE MEASURABLETRAITSOVERTHEPASTYEARSOFPRODUCTION0ROGRESSHASBEENMADEIN EVERYTRAITASDESIGNED 9%!2 #%$ "7 77 97 -- -' #%- 3# 32--ANR-ASTR $AUGHTERSWITHSUPERIORUDDERQUALITY 4HEONLYDOCUMENTEDSTARANIMALTODATEFOR 'ENE3TARFEEDEFlCIENCYINTHE53 '0$4&EED%FlCIENCY &% &% &% &% &!4 2%! )-& s s %&"EEFISADVANCINGSUPERIORGENETICSTHROUGHMODERNTECHNOLOGYWITH ABALANCEBETWEENHERITAGEANDINNOVATION %&"EEFHASRELENTLESSLYPURSUEDCARCASSMERITTHROUGHINHERDTESTINGAND ULTRASOUNDCOLLECTION s !VERAGING0RIMECARCASSESOVERTHEPASTYEARS s INCREASEINTHE#HOICEORBETTERCARCASSESSINCEBASEYEAR s !VERAGEOF9'IMPROVEMENTINTHESAMETIME 9EAR 0RIME "ASE9EAR %&&%NDURO* s s ,EADERFOR%0$TRAITS $OCUMENTEDVALUEADDEDLEADER DAUGHTERSHAVEPRODUCEDPROGENYBYDIFFERENT SIRESWITH#HOICEORHIGHERQUALITYGRADES PROGENYKILLEDTODATEWITH#HOICEORHIGHER MEET#!"1UALITY'RADESPECIlCATION #HOICE 3ELECT 3TANDARD #HOICEOR BETTER 9' 9' 9' 9' 9' %&&&RANK0 4HETOPSIREFOR"-)4OPFORALLINDEXES 4HEANIMALINTHEBREEDFOR)-& 3EETHE!(!9OUNG3IRETESTDATA ATWWWEFBEEFCOM LB %&&&ELLIS# 4HEORIGINALDOCUMENTED+INGOF#ARCASS 3TILLLEADINGTODAYALEADERFOR%0$TRAITS %&"EEF3CHU,AR0ROlCIENT. 4HEEXCITING!"3'LOBALFEMALEMAKER 4HE6SONTOTIETO 0HILAND*OYCE%LLIS .TH3Ts#HRISMAN), -ATTAND,ISA *OEAND,AURI #ALLUSORVISITOUR7EBSITEFOR MOREINFORMATIONANDACATALOG sWWWEFBEEFCOM %&"EEF3CHU,AR3+% 4HESALETOPPINGPROSPECT !PREDICTABLEPROGRAMWITHUNBIASED SELECTIONGEAREDTOWARDQUANTIlABLE PROlTMEASURESWITHSELECTIONPRESSURE ONTHEIMPORTANTCONVENIENCETRAITS 18 • www.herefordamerica.com HEREFORD AMERICA • March 2008 Big Day for Hansons! Then a combination of decreasing numbers of breeders and increasing concerns over transmittable diseases in hogs, forced its cancellation. “I was a little disappointed when there was no place for the swine show,” Endres said. “But the swine industry has changed — fewer producers raising more hogs.” In the early 1970s, Endres was elected to the South Dakota State Legislature and had to curb his involvement on the Ag Committee. But that didn’t stop his involvement in the Farm Show. Even though the Legislature is in session during the time the Farm Show runs, he and his sons have managed to continue showing livestock and being involved in other areas of the show. “My son Greg is involved with Polled Hereford cattle and now, my grandchildren are also involved in showing (cattle),” Endres said. Endres remains active in the farm operation as well as working in the real estate business in Watertown. “I’ve always liked raising cattle and farming,” Endres said, adding the Farm Show is still an annual event for himself and his family. “Oh, I wouldn’t miss it,” he said. Looking back on those early years and holding the show in the city auditorium, Endres can reflect on just how much the show has grown and changed over the years. “It just outgrew (the auditorium),” he said. “Even when we first started at the Extension Complex, it was a lot different.” Over the last decade or so, the Extension Complex on West Kemp Avenue has been expanded twice, adding much needed space for one of the most popular farm shows in the region. “I know a lot of consignors who can’t believe the way people here and the business community support the Farm Show,” Endres said. “Watertown has a fine reputation for supporting the Farm Show.” Along with the growth of the Farm Show has come the addition of more educational seminars and commercial exhibits. Endres said those have been some of the biggest changes in recent years. “Keeping up with new technology — years ago we didn’t see things like the new GPS guidance systems, or the newest chemicals,” he said. “It educates farmers and there is a lot to learn. “It’s been a big plus for farmers of crops and livestock.” There is another aspect of the Farm Show that Endres said can’t be left out of the picture. “Sometimes people forget, it’s a great time for socializing,” he said, adding that people have made a lot of friends over the years and it just keeps growing. “We know more people through the Hereford Association,” Endres said. “It (the Farm Show) used to be a little more localized, but now it covers so much more of an area. “And the number of cattle breeds at the show has increased.” When Codington County Extension Educator Chuck Langner recently told Endres the 2008 Watertown Winter Farm Show would be dedicated in his name, Endres said he was taken off guard. “I never really thought about that (the honor),” he said. “We just always had a lot of fun (at the Farm Show). “I was surprised and if we have been able to help the farm show in some way, I’m very proud of that.” HEREFORD AMERICA • March 2008 www.herefordamerica.com • 19 WTK ANL 12R Torrent 43T ANL 36N TRAVELLER 91T ANL SBS RH Titan 9T Canuck x Venture BW: 88 lbs. I returned home a few weeks ago after spending some time on an agricultural leadership seminar to Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. I am a member of the Nebraska LEAD program. I contacted Jay Elfeldt to help me find some articles with Herefords on them. As usual, he came through for me! There are people throughout these three countries with Herefords on their caps or coffee mugs! I appreciate the help Jay. I took some pictures with me on the international study seminar. I had an opportunity to show some people what our Herefords look like. They thought our cattle over here were huge. They also thought Brian looked like he should play for the Huskers. You might be thinking how someone from Morocco might have even heard of the Huskers but they have! Several people that we spent time with have their doctorates from UNL, Iowa State or Oklahoma State. They know the Midwest. Who knew worlds away someone could talk Huskers with us. Being worlds away from home, I realized the old saying “it’s a small world” is so true. I was inspired by so many things on this study seminar. As you noticed I didn’t call this a trip. I was there for a purpose. To learn about international trade, cultures, agriculture and most importantly leadership. There are so many styles of leadership. Some are more direct while others are more guidance driven; letting you figure things out while they stand closely by. There are children in these countries that speak four and five languages. The chances they will have in business will be enhanced just due to the fact they are so bilingual. I met a fourteen year old girl that spoke English, French, Arabic, and English. She was learning a fifth language when we spoke with her. We asked her father, a government official of Morocco, if he worried about his children conspiring against him in a language he didn’t understand and he replied “they already do!” He didn’t care though; he wants them to be better than he is. I thought to myself then how similar we are.We all want more for our children, we want them to survive in agriculture, and be successful. We gave people from the countries gifts, like I explained. Rain gauges, calendars with cowboy scenes, Husker socks, seed corn caps, etc. Only one in our group brought along candy. This was popular when touring Morocco with the children.I had no gifts for children or teenagers, but I did have pictures of our boys rodeoing. I asked our teenage countepart if she’d like this picture of American teenage cowboys and she lit up like a lamp! I got a huge thankyou hug from her! We talked as a group how children are children no matter where you are at. Teenage girls like teenage boys, and children everywhere can’t resist candy! We saw these children herding small groups of sheep and goats or one cow. We saw them getting water for their livestock, shopping with their parents, and pulling weeds to feed their cow. We learned about how they go to school and how they acquire land. We saw an agricultural school/college they can attend. After some of our experiences, we would meet in our hotel and discuss items of particular interest to us. Some of what they do in these countries is still being done by hand. One would think time forgot some of these places and how much better we could do things with our equipment, bigger and better right? But what would they do with all the people bigger and better equipment might put out of work? Although we saw some nice size fields, our tractors would look so out of place. We had a lot of discussion on how we might improve farming practices overseas but we also discussed how not to get in the mind set of being the quick fixer. In these countries they are doing a lot of things right: they have good fuel efficiency in diesel engines and they can run three species on the same land. In Morocco animal husbandry is definitely there. There was always someone with the livestock at all times. Fire control is done by the goats grazing and water issues are present over there just as they are here. Traceability of products in Spain is present and we got a message that there, agriculture listens to the consumer and in coops, the membership makes decisions. They can package milk in special packaging so that it doesn’t need refrigeration until it is open. The packing industry can harvest meat to fit the cultural existence needs of three religions. They worry and talk about erosion. GMO corn was discussed as well as alternative fuel sources for energy. I tell you all about this because I could sit on the coast of Spain and see the coast of Africa and although at that very moment, looking across the ocean I felt so far from home but yet I felt how small the world really is. Leadership in small towns can be really tough. Sometimes leaders are elected due to popularity instead of being the best choice through life experiences, etc. What are qualities you look for the most in a leader? With the political circus going on the U.S.A. right now how do we look to foreign nations? Maybe we shouldn’t care what they think. But I think we should. You can go to the European Union and to Morocco and see the loyalty they still have towards their royalty. Even if they didn’t agree with something they might have done they still talk about positive things they did. There was a sense of loyalty there. When you see Americans on TV in a foreign country, like on CNN, we don’t always look like we’re united. We live in a country with extraordinary freedoms. I can appreciate this. But I didn’t feel united. There is a way to “agree to disagree”. I believe we need more leadership in our homes. We need to show our children and grandchildren, nieces, (continued on page 24) Beesons Honored at Black Hills Stock Show — Champion Overall Pen — Check out our website for more information www.jensenbros.net Jack and Bev Beeson, Wayne, NE were the 2008 Black Hills Stock Show Hereford Honorees. Jack grew up in Garber, OK during the drought years and Bev came from Beaver Creek, MN, one of 12 children. Jack borrowed the money to buy his first registered Hereford cow for an FFA project and has owned registered Herefords ever since. In 1949 Jack moved to Wayne, NE where he went to work as the herdsman for Leland Herman at Hervale Farms. In 1954 at the Sioux Empire Farm Show Jack met Bev who was there with her family showing their Shorthorns. Jack needed help on show day so he figured why not trade with a good looking gal that had some sisters that could help, too. They continued to trade help at fairs and sales over the next few years. Jack claims he drove over 50,000 miles visiting the South Dakota school teacher. He finally decided it would cheaper to just marry her and in 1957 they were married, celebrating their 50 anniversary in June 2007 with a great crowd of friends and Hereford breeders. It is hard to do. Not everyone is running for political office I realize this. But, being level headed, lady and gentlemanly like will still get you somewhere. Being a leader means standing up, sometimes trailing behind and helping followers, sometimes it means speaking up and sometimes being quietdad used to say you can’t hear with your mouth open. I would like for you to challenge stereotypes. Challenge yourself to forget about the ones you may have and to change how others see us. Whether it is regarding the color of skin, what people think of rural America or how others perceive those of us that raise Hereford cattle. With this I wish you good luck. Let me know how it goes. Jimmy attended elementary school at Virginia #1 and quit after the eighth grade when his father died of a massive heart attack. Jimmy the youngest of eight children took over the family farm at the age of 13. Jimmy continued to farm with his family and ventured off to his own farmstead in the Fall of 1957 with his bride the late Irene Carter. Commercial and dairy cattle were always part of the family farm until 1966. A change was made in the fall of 1965 when Jimmy selected 5 bred Polled Hereford females from Sam Bradley. This was the beginning of the Carter’s Polled Hereford operation. Several cows in herd still go back to a foundation female that was included in that purchase, “Baby Lady the Sixth”. AI was used beginning in 1977 and Jimmy completed AI School in 1979 with the practice continuing to date. Bull sales were done by private treaty until recently when the Carter’s moved to a public auction each spring. In 1995 a new dimension was added to the farm, TNT Angus, a purebred Black Angus operation in which Jimmy’s son Terry began. Jimmy is a member of All Nations Lutheran Church, North Dakota Hereford Association, North Dakota Angus Association, and the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association. Treating and Preventing Retained Placenta in Beef Cattle What is a retained placenta? The placenta (or afterbirth) is the name given to the membranes that transfer nutrients from the cow to the calf before the calf (fetus) is born. These membranes and blood vessels are made by the calf and connect to the blood supply in the uterus of the cow or heifer. The cotyledons (buttons) of the placenta “hook up” to the caruncles of the uterus. It is across this thin connection between the membranes of the cow and the membranes of the calf that essential materials pass to the developing calf. These essential materials include oxygen, blood sugar (glucose), amino acids (the building blocks of proteins), fats, calcium, phosphorus, vitamins, trace minerals and all the other essential components of life. When the calf is born the placenta normally detaches within a few hours and is expelled. That is why it is referred to as the “afterbirth.” In most all situations, the placenta is expelled within 12 hours of the birth of the calf. If it is not expelled by 24 hours it is defined as a retained placenta or the cow is said to “have not cleaned.” Why is a retained placenta a problem? In and of itself the retained placenta is not a problem. However, the retention creates a number of potential problems. The retained placenta “hangs” out of the vulva and as the cow walks the placenta slides back and forth through the external opening of the vulva and vagina and “sucks” material into the uterus. The vulva of a cow is located just below the anus, so fecal material and fecal microorganisms are pulled into the uterus. Also, when a cow lays down the placenta will hang out further and lay in the dirt or mud, which is loaded with bacteria. These bacteria set up an active site of infection in the uterus and this can have serious consequences for the cow. The local infection in the uterus can cause the animal to become ill (fever, (continued on page 38) 38 • www.herefordamerica.com (continued from page 37) weight loss, etc). Sometimes the infection is so bad the cow can actually die. When the uterus becomes infected and inflamed, it takes much longer for the cow to “clean” and to be ready for the next breeding season. A retained placenta usually causes the cow to have an increased time from calving to the conception of the next calf. It is not uncommon for a cow with a retained placenta to delay the next pregnancy for 2-6 months. Obviously, a twomonth delay will mean a late calving date in the following year. A six-month delay may result in an open cow next year at pregnancy checking time. Another result of retained placenta can be tetanus. The tetanus organism is commonly in the soil or in the feces and when it gets into the uterus it can set up an infection and result in tetanus (lockjaw). Tetanus can be fatal in cattle and at the minimum requires long term therapy (1-3 months). What causes retained placenta? The list of potential causes is quite long; however, there are a number of common causes that affect beef cattle. It is easier to think about the causes in groups, so the following listing might be helpful. HEREFORD AMERICA • March 2008 Mechanical Causes of Retained Placenta • Difficult birth (calf too large for cow, backwards calf [breech birth], one leg or head backwards) • Twins • Cesarean section • Fetal monsters or emphysematous fetus (gas-filled fetus) Nutritional Causes of Retained Placenta • Energy or Protein Deficiency during pregnancy • Vitamin A deficiency • Selenium deficiency • Iodine deficiency • Vitamin E deficiency Management Causes of Retained Placenta • Stress (Transportation or rough handling, poor feed conditions) • Obesity • Heredity Infectious diseases/Toxins • Brucellosis • Pine Needle abortion • Leptospirosis • IBR virus, BVD virus • Foothill Abortion (EBA) Can you tell by looking which bull is the most efficient? How do I treat cows with retained placenta? If a cow has a retained placenta of 24-48 hours and is running a fever (rectal temperature over 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit) or is not eating it should receive attention and treatment. The minimum treatment would be an antibiotic such as a long-acting tetracycline (Biomycin®, LA-200®, Tetradure®, etc) and Lutalyse® (which can help to speed expulsion of the placenta). If the cow is depressed or dehydrated it will be necessary to have your veterinarian examine and treat the cow. They will probably flush the uterus as well as give you advice on other drugs to use over the next 5-7 days. Always seek your veterinarian’s advice on treating cows with retained placenta as the condition can deteriorate into a life-threatening one in a very short period of time. It is usually not necessary to manually remove the placenta; however, your veterinarian can advise you better after examining the animal. It is important to understand that there is no single course of treatment that will be safe and effective in every circumstance; thus your veterinarian’s advise will be crucial to success. Most of the drugs that are useful to treat a cow or heifer with retained placenta are not labeled for this condition. Therefore, these drugs are used in an EXTRALABEL manner and will REQUIRE one or more PRESCRIPTIONS from your veterinarian for this purpose. Also, there may be an extended withdrawal time for these drugs that will have to be adhered to. Additionally, if you have more than 1% of your cattle with retained placenta, you should seek professional help to prevent this problem. How can I prevent retained placenta problems? Since there are many causes of retained placenta, there is no simple answer. Some of the obvious answers include: (1) don’t allow cows to get too thin or too fat before calving, (2) reduce stress near calving as much as possible, (3) prevent exposure to pine needles, juniper trees, and pine trees (particularly Ponderosa Pines) before calving, (4) make sure your trace mineral and vitamin supplementation program is adequate, (5) prevent Foothill Abortion problems, and (6) maintain a sound vaccination program to minimize the chance of viral or bacterial abortions. Because calving problems often result in retained placenta, it is important to consider the appropriate selection of genetics for your herd as a part of prevention. One of the useful tools is birth weight EPDs. Lower birth weights will decrease calving problems IF all other factors are equal. However, it is (continued on page 40) www.faithlivestock.com • 605-967-2200 FAITH LIVESTOCK Faith, South Dakota Neither can we, but in the last year we have begun sending our breeding stock to Residual Feed Intake tests in Missouri and the results are very interesting. Even though we know that Herefords are the most efficient breed of cattle, we can still statistically see and measure differences in them. So select bulls with birth weight EPD’s in keeping with your herd. Also, remember to look at the bull’s actual birth weight data and remember that the birth weight EPD numbers are not the same between breeds. One breed can have a bull calf with a birth weight of 100 pounds and a birth weight EPD of 1.0 while another breed can have a bull calf with a birth weight of 80 pounds and a birth weight EPD of 5.0. Obviously, the second bull will tend to have calves with lower birth weights IF all other factors are equal. Another tool available is pelvic measurements in yearling heifers. The value of this tool is to cull replacement heifers with small pelvic canals before breeding for the first time. Regarding birth weights, it is important to remember that the cow or heifer has 60% of the “input” into how large the calf is going to be. Therefore, genetic selection of the cowherd has more impact than the one time selection of the bulls. If you don’t have problems with retained placenta, that is excellent. If you do, there are a number of important items you will need to consider and discuss with your veterinarian. The USDA 10-year outlook is a scenario based on what would be expected to happen under a continuation of current farm legislation and specific assumptions about external conditions. It is not a forecast. USDA data is based on carcass weight equivalence (CWE) and does not include variety meats. Highlights The USDA’s 10-year outlook for the beef market offers this projection for the landscape of major beef-importing countries in the year 2017: Top beef importers in 2017 United States – U.S. imports are projected to grow to 1,748,000 metric tons (3.85 billion pounds), an increase of 277,000 metric tons (610.6 million pounds) or 19 percent over 10 years. Russia – imports grow to 1,398,000 metric tons (3.08 billion pounds), an increase of 348,000 metric tons (767.2 million pounds) or 33 percent over 10 years. Japan – imports in 2017 total 851,000 metric tons (1.87 billion pounds), an increase of 136,000 metric tons (299.8 million pounds) or a 19 percent increase. Mexico – 765,000 metric tons (1.68 billion pounds) imported in 2017, reflecting a 365,000 metric ton (804.6 million pounds) or a 91 percent increase. A mild increase of 2 percent in 2008 is followed by a 15 percent increase in 2009 and then 5 percent to 7 percent annual growth over the remainder of the outlook period. European Union – EU imports projected at 709,000 metric tons (1.56 billion pounds) in 2017, a decrease of 16,000 metric tons (35.2 million pounds) from the 2007 import estimate. According to Erin Daley, USMEF manager of research and analysis, factors leading to the projected decrease likely include lackluster EU consumption, limited beef supplies, high consumer prices and heavy reliance on South America, which contribute to market uncertainty. South Korea – projection of 430,000 metric tons (947.9 million pounds) imported in 2017, an additional 115,000 metric tons (253.5 million pounds) over 2007 levels. Egypt and Canada – each country projected to import about 332,000 metric tons (731.9 million pounds) in 2017 with Egypt’s imports growing from 250,000 metric tons (551.1 million pounds) and Canada’s imports growing from 225,000 metric tons (496 million pounds) in 2007. According to Daley, the most significant revisions from USDA’s 2007 estimates to its new 10-year projection are increased imports forecast for Russia (reflecting strong demand and declining domestic production) and Canada (exchange rate implications; high feed and labor costs). Major beef importing countries Note: The following import data is from the Global Trade Atlas in product weight equivalence. United States – Beef imports fell 1 percent in 2007 to 933,330 metric tons (2.05 billion pounds). The top suppliers were Australia (30 percent), Canada (27 percent), New Zealand (17 percent), • Minnesota • David, Lorie, Matthew, Michael & Mason Kitchell 3471 State Highway 200 Ada, MN 56510-9260 Quality, Performance Cattle For Sale 8 Miles East of Ada On U.S. 200 218-584-8283 Visitors Always Welcome H anson erefords J J im eri ody aime 37590 110th St Comfrey, MN 56019 507.877.3631 [email protected] Her ef or ds Heref efor ords Since 1957 2477 N.W. The United States imported more than 11 percent of its beef consumption in 2007, and more than 12 percent of beef is expected to come from imports in 2008. Daley notes that this change will result from an expected slight reduction in production, an increase in exports, and a slight increase in beef imports. The weak dollar and relatively tight global beef supplies are expected to limit U.S. beef imports this year. Continued strong cow slaughter could also limit the demand for foreign manufacturing beef. Russia – Through September 2007, Russia imported 23 percent more beef than during the same period in 2006, driven by 137 percent growth in imports from Brazil (64 percent of total imports), which more than offset declines from its other major suppliers, including Argentina (15 percent market share), Paraguay (8 percent) and the EU (5 percent). Russia renewed access to imports from Ukraine in 2007, and import volumes from that country are currently similar to those from the EU (about 5 percent of the total). In 2007, more than 43 percent of beef consumed in Russia was imported. Imports are expected to account for nearly 45 percent of total consumption in 2008 as domestic production declines slightly while imports increase to meet growing domestic consumption. Rising demand from booming HRI and retail sectors, which domestic production cannot satisfy, coupled with growing quality expectations from co nsumers ensure that • Montana • Bayers Hereford Ranch Private Treaty Sales Eddy & Joanne 406/773-5710 Matt & Krista 406/773-5721 Eastern Montana’s finest Herefords ~ Horned & Polled ~ Bob Bleeker 1337 Hwy 421 Joliet, MT 59041 B Byron & Pauline Bayers PO Box 410 Twin Bridges, MT 59754 (406) 684-5465 [email protected] Bleeker Herefords Bulls, Heifers, Feeders For Sale 406/962-3801 DALLAS POLLED HEREFORDS Don Dallas Box 532 Canyon Creek MT 59633 406/368-2244 Ranch 406/443-5110 Office 357 Pryor Mtn. John and Linda Holden 540 Westwind Lane Valier, MT 59486 (406) 279-3326 www.westwindranch.com Russia will import more beef in 2008. The challenge for U.S. beef is to reestablish its presence after a four-year ban and a successful positioning of Australian and Argentinean beef products in the Russian market. For beef livers and round cuts, price will be the key element in capturing a significant market share. U.S. beef is reentering the Russian market at a time when prices in Brazil have reached record highs and the Brazilian real continues to strengthen against the U.S. dollar. With the continuing weakness of the dollar, these factors combine to make U.S. beef an attractive proposition for Russian importers. The first shipments of high quality U.S. beef — tenderloins, striploins and ribeyes — since late 2003 delighted importers by selling well. Beef offal is expected to do well, too. In 2003, the United States exported 60,752 metric tons (133.9 million pounds) of beef variety meat to Russia. The return of U.S. beef made USMEF’s presence at Moscow’s prestigious Prodexpo Trade show (Feb. 11-15), the biggest annual food show in Russia, a great opportunity for U.S. beef suppliers to meet with customers from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok, as well as from Ukraine, Tajikistan and Armenia. USMEF hosted a reception on February 13 attended by more than 200 guests including Allan Mustard, minister counsellor for agricultural affairs, and a USMEF delegation led by Thad Lively, senior vice president of policy planning and research. The delegation had an opportunity to meet with both U.S. suppliers and Russian traders and to be among the first people in Russia to taste top quality U.S. beef cuts since the lifting of the ban on U.S. beef (Oct. 2007). The success of the reception and the presence of leading Russian meat companies confirmed the high demand for U.S. beef in Russia. The Russian meat trade is becoming more regularized as companies specializing in meat imports replace more opportunistic traders. This evolution contributes to creating more transparent and predictable relationships for U.S. exporters. Japan – Japan’s beef imports increased slightly (1.5 percent) in 2007, totaling 486,628 metric tons or 1.07 billion pounds. Australia maintained 82 percent market share despite a 3.35 percent decline in volume. Imports from New Zealand declined 10.6 percent, accounting for 7 percent of Japan’s total imports. U.S. imports regained ground to reach 7 percent of Japan’s total import market share while Mexico captured 1.5 percent of total imports. Nearly 60 percent of Japan’s beef consumption is derived from imports. Since last year, USMEF has conducted a “We Care” campaign to demonstrate the commitment of U.S. producers and industry to delivering a safe, wholesome and delicious product and to counter negative impressions of U.S. beef in the Japanese media. The campaign includes newspaper ads, an interactive Web site, a U.S. beef industry virtual tour and media events. It also contains elements directed to the Japanese retail and foodservice trades to assure buyers that the product is safe and there is consumer demand.
