Celebrating Treverton’s Jubilee Year Beyond Expectations: Treverton’s first 50 Years This limited edition coffee-table book, inspired by the pupils who have graduated through Treverton, gives readers a glimpse into the life of a school that has successfully shaped the lives of the many students who have passed through its doors. We are offering all past and present pupils and anyone involved with the school, the opportunity to be a part of this special book by purchasing a „brick‟ and having your name stamped into history forever. How will it work? At the back of the book, we will be printing a „brick wall‟- a tribute to anyone who has been a part of building this school to what it is today. We are offering you the opportunity to purchase a „brick‟ for an amount of R500. Your name and dates that you were involved at the school will be printed on the „brick‟ clearly for everyone to see…and the rest is history. The money raised from selling these bricks, will go towards the cost of the printing of the book. Should you be interested in participating, please contact Lynne Butler: Telephone 033-2631251, ext 263 or email: [email protected]. It was a chance for them to catch up after not having seen each other for the three weeks over the holidays! We welcomed two new children into boarding this term. Chiron (left) comes all the way from Munich in Germany and Tristan Moolman (right) was a day scholar but has now decided to board on a weekly basis. We also welcome Siffie (left) back who has been off for a term after having an op on her leg! Rugby Our U12 and U13 rugby season kicked off this weekend with a „sevens‟ festival at Treverton involving ourselves, Kings from Nottingham Road and Mooi River Primary. We fielded two teams, an A and a B side, each playing three matches. Nothing provides a learning curve for rugby than actual game time. Our B side lost 2 and won their last game and the A side won 2 and lost their last game. Some tough opposition, from Kings in particular, was a great wake-up call for our boys as far as the need to tackle and play as a whole unit is concerned. Yet many positives were evident. Some great runs and metres gained by many of the boys showed there is a real desire to play this game! On the whole, it was a very festive morning of rugby and it was great to see so many Moms and Dads supporting. We wait with baited breath to see how the rest of our season unfolds! Mr Marc Schulze Polo Crosse Junior Classic A group of Treverton Prep pupils took part in the Polo Crosse Junior Classic held in Mooi River during the holidays. They participated with under 18s from around the country. They include L to R: Hylton Choice, Ty van Onselen, Beth van Onselen, Lara Kent, Jonathan Taylor, Amy Fletcher, Robbie Anderson, Brad Kent. Jono‟s team was in first place. College News Music Concert update: Unfortunately, the music concert that was scheduled for Wednesday 30 April had to be postponed to Thursday 29 May. Round 4 was forfeited by Michaelhouse, who could not make it to the fixture. Round 5, against Estcourt High School, was won by our Junior Team, with Conor McCallum taking best speaker. The Senior team lost very narrowly, and Shannon Freeman missed the Best Speaker award by only three points. Dr K Brown Hockey Electing a captain and vice-captain is hardly ever an easy task and this year is no exception. There are many players in my team this year who have a tremendous amount of experience and wise council to offer and, whilst this is a privilege, it has made the decision a difficult one. Nevertheless, a decision was needed and was made and I am proud to announce the Captain and Vice-Captain for the season as Tim Blaker and Devon O‟Brien. Well done gentlemen. I am looking forward to a great season working both of you. I trust that you will lead the squad with passion. Mr Dean Balie Rugby First team vs St Henry’s (Coach: Mr Jason Hyam) st Treverton 1 team rugby took the long trip down the N3 on Saturday morning to play against St Henrys. The weather was warm and perfect for running rugby. Things started poorly for the boys as Treverton leaked an early try through poor midfield defence. The rest of the game saw the Treverton boys fighting against poor luck and small mistakes. Two tries by Devon O‟Brien and points from the boot of Andrew Tilbury as well as Luke Richardson and one forced penalty try left the final score at 25-20 to St Henrys. Congratulations to Valentine Masinyane for being named Man of the Match. U16A Rugby Season so far The U16A rugby team have had a good start to the season. Last term we played three games as part of our pre-season preparation. We first played Lindpark at home and won this match convincingly 33-0 with tries coming from Paul, Motadi (2) Lee and Oscar. Lee Benting kicked 4/5 conversions. Our next game saw us get onto the bus at 4:30am on a Saturday to travel to Grantleigh in the heart of Zululand. This was always going to be a tough match. Both teams defended well and the half-time score was locked at 0-0. In the second half Motadi scored a good try and some solid defence saw us come out victorious 5-0. In the last week before the end of term we travelled down to Pietermarizburg to play Voortrekker. In this game we played some outstanding rugby and scored some excellent tries. Try scorers were Motadi (2); Lunga and Oscar. The final score was 26:20 to Treverton. An outstanding result. The U16A rugby boys coming back after a three week holiday were determined to keep their unbeaten record alive. We travelled down to St Henry‟s in Durban to play their U16 team. It was a tough fixture with lots of mistakes from both sides. The half time score was 3-3 with Luke Tyler converting a penalty kick. A lack of discipline from the team cost us however the team dug deep and Lee Benting scored a good try from a backline move that started deep inside our own half. Final Score 10-3 to Treverton. Mr C Bubb U14 vs St Henry’s (Coach: Mr K Larkan) The Treverton College U14 side travelled down to Durban to play against St Henry‟s in our first rugby match of the term. It was an exciting start as we scored a try in the first 2 minutes of the game. Captain Tyrone Golding lead from the front to eventually break through their line and score under the poles. By the end of the half we lead 17-0. Unfortunately for us, the boys decided to “switch off” in the second half, allowing St Henry‟s to score 3 unconverted tries of their own to leave the score at 15-17. We then scored a brilliant break away try thanks to M.K. (Mihlali Mashao) who ran the ball from our own 10m line to go rd on and score after handing off 2 players and bouncing a 3 . We then lead 15-22. We let them score again and the score was 20-22. The ref carded Dominic Dijkstra and we allowed ourselves to fall behind mentally and let them score from a penalty in the last minute of the game leaving the score at 27-22 to St Henry‟s. Although we lost, I am proud of the way we played and the physicality we showed as well as fighting for the win until the last minute. Kevin Tsiane, who was playing his first full game of rugby, was declared Man of the Match. Boys Hockey Festival Report The Treverton Sports Festival is always a great opportunity for me to bring new players into the mainstream game of playing against other first teams. Many of these new players will not face this type of opposition for the rest of the season and it is wonderful to be able to play them at this level so early in their high school careers. The Treverton Festival Hockey squad consisted this year of 3 grade 9s and 4 grade 10s. Many of the new players faced the first few practices with trepidation but were soon able to incorporate themselves into the squad with the help of the more senior players who acquitted themselves well to welcoming the new players into the fold. We played 7 matches over the festival and emerged with very impressive statistics of 1 draw, 2 losses and 4 wins. We had 4 goals scored against us and scored 16. Devon O‟Brien, the festival captain, led the way admirably by taking the responsibility of scoring on his shoulders and was awarded with the “Striker of the Festival” award at the prize-giving. Brent Kennard, the Vice-Captain, managed his defence team well and was often the stalwart in this area. We welcomed Tim Blaker into the midfield for the last 2 days of festival and his presence certainly added stability in the midfield. Well done to all the squad players for their excellent contribution over the Festival period and I look forward to working with many of them again in the future. Mr Dean Balie Post Matric G.A.P. Year “Hello All! We started the term off by welcoming Martin back, his collar bone has recovered completely and he has been cleared to continue. We begun the term with route planning for the four day Higher Berg hike (which we are currently on), not the most exciting thing to do but we had the opportunity to put our skills to work. We went straight into scuba “lectures” more self-study and watching a DVD. Just watching the DVD has secured my excitement! We helped out at the equestrian show over the weekend by scribing and assisting with catering. I must go, our next adventure is only just about to start.” Athol Davies : Treverton G.A.P. We will be running a training th show on the 11 of May at Treverton, the entry form will be out soon. Treverton College will be presenting its annual school play in May, in the form of a light-hearted melodrama entitled “Chaos at the Cannery”. Written by Gary McCarver, the play features the requisite villains and heroes, as well as the ubiquitous piano player and a cue card holder, aptly named „Paige Turner‟. The play is set in the American Wild West in the 1800s, in the small one-horse town of San Juan. The new sheriff, Mortimer Fatality (Mort for short), is on his way to San Juan on the train. Unfortunately he enters into a card game with the dastardly Professor Phineas Mack , who cheats him out of his money, shoots him and takes his place as the sheriff. The unsuspecting townsfolk gather to welcome their new peacekeeper. Will they work out who he really is? Or will they lose their money and possessions to this master of evil tricks? Starring Jonathan Ogden as Professor Mack, Athi Godlwana as Miss Faye Tality, Mr Kyle Larkan as Mort Tality, Darren Usher-Jones as Dan Belford, the cannery owner, Kean Stroh as his new assistant, Oliver Sudden, Kevin Cui as the bandit Des Berado, and many other pupils (42 in total), the play promises to be a great evening‟s entertainment.
