16 July 2014 - St Patrick`s College
Eamon Hannan - Principal
16 July 2014
Welcome back to term 3. This is a very important term of study for all our students but
especially for Year 12. It is vital that students settle into a solid pattern of study.
NAIDOC Week
As a nation we celebrated NAIDOC week in the last week of the holidays. It is a celebration
supporting our Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Students, staff and
parents marched under the Catholic Education banner in the march last Friday.
As a college we are celebrating NAIDOC week this week and as a region at a NAIDOC Mass
next Monday. These indigenous cultures have continuous links going back over 40 000 years.

At Cape Hillsborough if you go on the mangrove walk you can see a shell midden where the
Yuibera people cooked and ate shellfish near a large rock that dates back over 20 000 years. In
the foreground of the magnificent rock above you can see the huge mound of shells indicating
the extent of the feasting on shellfish over many years. This is a culture and heritage that is the
oldest continuing culture in the world. We have much to celebrate.

This week we are flying the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags alongside the Australian
flags at St Pat’s.
Building Program
At the start of the holidays the builders moved in to commence stage one of St Patrick’s Master
Plan. This stage involves renovation of the student seating area and the old bitumen quad into
“St Pat’s Square”. In addition Jubilee Hall is being renovated and turned into two lecture
theatres, a stage/handbells area and music room. The development will also include a new
disabled toilet, mobility ramps and a lift for access to the first floor. These facilities are much
needed. (see pictures on page 9).
Construction will finish in November and we are working closely with the builders to minimise
disruption to student learning.

Today at assembly we celebrated NAIDOC Week with a special liturgy. This gave the college
community a time to reflect on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and
achievements. This year the National NAIDOC theme was ‘Serving Country: Centenary &
Beyond’. This was chosen to honor all Aboriginal and Torres Strait men and women who have
fought in defense of country. Through our NAIDOC celebrations we recognised the role that
they have played in shaping our Nation’s identity and we paused to reflect on their sacrifice.
In order to successfully live out the theme of ‘Serving Country: Centenary & Beyond’ the St
Patrick’s College community decided to once again participate in the Proud Race initiative.
This requires us to focus on how Australians can recognise the contributions, cultures and
histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by representing them on life-sized
bollards. Today we recognised the contributions of Gurrumul Yunupingu, Steve Renouf, Reg
Saunders, Oodgeroo Noonuccal and David Unaipon. Their bollards are now on display in
the administration courtyard.
Our celebrations continued into lunch with a concert and
sampling of traditional Aboriginal food. Thank you to all of the staff and students who made
this day such a special event.

Throughout the history of the Australian Army, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and
women have served with distinction. During the first half of the twentieth century they served
despite regulations prohibiting the enlistment of persons ‘not substantially of European origin
or descent’. When they managed to skirt the rules and enlist, Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander men and women often found military service an experience that was able to provide
education and employment opportunities denied to them in civilian life. The friendships
Australian Indigenous personnel forged with non-Indigenous soldiers broke down barriers and
fostered non-Indigenous allies in the struggle for Indigenous rights. For those who served and
now serve our Country let us pray;
.
Creator God,
We pray for this land, it’s ancient culture, customs, languages and its people.
Gather us together to look after this land and the people, as those who have
gone before us have. So the beauty of our country may be preserved and
protected for all future generations.
Give us the grace, to be united in one mind, one heart and in one action so that
we can continue to serve each other as we hope to serve you. Amen

Reports
Reports will be mailed home next week, so it is an important time for all our students to sit
down and do some hard thinking about:
i)
ii)
iii)
iv)
v)
vi)
Setting / resetting goals;
Organising study timetables;
Planning 2015 for work / study;
Applying for jobs;
Applying for university accommodation;
Applying or finding out about scholarships etc.
This is the last ‘big push’ for Year 12 – so make a strong commitment to less free time for more
study time. Having said that it is worth noting in the last few years those students who
achieved the highest OP results were also those students heavily involved in many college
sporting, cultural and community activities. Time management is an important skill for all of
our students to learn.
Subject Changes
All subject changes for Semester 2 and 4 have now been finalised. Thank you to students and
parents for their prompt attention to this important issue. Classes can now be finalised quickly
giving students the best opportunity to be successful in their new subject. Over 60 students
applied to change subjects with over 80 subject changes actioned.
Reminder – QCS Weekend Workshop
A reminder to students to keep Sunday 17 August free for the annual QCS Weekend
Workshop. Presenters for the various workshops are currently being finalised with full details
being available in the coming weeks.

Cross Country State Titles
Good luck to Year 12 student, Carl Story who will travel to Toowoomba this weekend to
compete in the Queensland Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships.
Confraternity Shield and QISSN Carnivals
Congratulations to all students who travelled away in the first week of the holidays to
compete at the QISSN (netball) and Confraternity Shield (rugby league) carnivals. The St Pat’s
Netball First VII competed strongly at the QISSN carnival on the Gold Coast and were placed
3rd in Division two and 11th overall. This was an excellent result considering there were 48
schools competing at this event. All players are congratulated by the way they represented the
college at this prestigious competition. Year 12 student, Gabrielle De Boni was named St Pat’s
Player of the Carnival following her strong performance throughout the week.
I would like to sincerely thank the coaching staff of the First VII, Ms Melanie Prior and Ms
Kerry Braby for accepting the responsibility of taking the girls away on a trip that was a
memorable experience for all girls involved. The college would also like to acknowledge the
efforts of Ms Louanne Benecke who was instrumental in organising the accommodation,
information letters and budget for the trip.
The First XIII Rugby League Team finished 6th overall in Division 1 at the Confraternity Shield
which was also played on the Gold Coast. The team narrowly missed out on qualifying for the
Semi-finals after being defeated 18-12 by Ignatius Park College in the Quarter-finals. Despite
leading the game 12-6 at halftime, Ignatius Park finished the game stronger and in doing so
denied our boys a place in the semifinals. The team did however defeat Emmaus College in
their next game to qualify for the 5 v 6 playoff. This game ended in a narrow 14-10 loss to
Rockhampton Grammar. At the conclusion of the carnival, Mitchell Dunn was named St Pat’s
Player of the Carnival after his consistently strong performance throughout the week. Other
team members to receive awards were; Ayden Horner (Best Forward), Terry Budby (Best
Back) and Luke Schulte (The Dom Award).
The College would like to acknowledge the efforts of the coaching staff who worked tirelessly
throughout the week; Matthew Schulze (Coach), Maurie Fatnowna (Assistant Coach), John
Boumford (Manager), Michael Comerford (Trainer), Matthew Paul (Trainer), Adam Skoczylas
(First Aid), Scott McSherry (Official).
Interschool Volleyball Competition
The Mackay District Volleyball competition commenced on Tuesday night with both our Open
Boys and Girls teams involved. Despite both teams being defeated all students played
exceptionally well for the first game of the competition. Both games were tightly contested
with the St Pat’s Spikers (Open Girls) being defeated by a Sarina Mixed team, 2 sets to 1. Year
11 student, Rebecca Wootton was a standout performer in this game. The St Pat’s Blockheads
~6~
(Open Boys) were also defeated 2 sets to 1 by Whitsunday Anglican. All players are reminded
that the $10 levy must be returned to the college bursar as it is now overdue.
St Pat’s Inter-house Athletics Carnival
The St Pat’s inter-house athletics carnival will be held on Friday 25 July at Cathy Freeman
Oval, Slade Point. House meetings were held today for the purpose of nominating for both
track and field events and encouraging participation on the day. For Rice (Year 12 Boys),
McAuley (Year 12 girls) and Chisholm (Year 11 girls) this will be their last opportunity to claim
a sporting title for 2014 after Colin (Year 11 boys) were crowned both Aquatics and Cross
Country champions earlier in the year. Students are reminded that this is a normal school day
and attendance is compulsory.
A number of events will be held prior to the carnival; in particular boys shot putt, girl’s javelin
and the 3000m running event. Students need to be aware of the following early dates for
some events.

QISSN Netball – Ms Kerry Braby (Manager)
Once again, St Pat’s competed in the QISSN
(Queensland Independent Secondary Schools
Netball) carnival, in the first week of the June
holidays. This year the competition was held at
the Runaway Bay Indoor Sports Facility, Gold
Coast.
The team consisted of Danica
Szepanowski (Captain), Gabi de Boni, Morgan
Mulder, Jessica and Claudia Finney, Rhiannon
Healy, Shakira Williams, Bridget Frannettovich,
Jordan Davies and Emily Comin. Ms Mel Prior
(Coach) and Ms Kerry Braby (Manager/bus
driver extraordinaire!) accompanied the team,
and a former Mackay resident, Debbie
officiated for our team with umpiring. The girls
played three games on Monday, four on Tuesday, two on Thursday and one on
Friday. Wednesday was a lay day, and much appreciated after our 6am (and very cold) start
on Tuesday. The team spent the day at Dreamworld, and later ventured to Northcliffe Surf
Club for dinner. Accommodation was at the beachfront Bayview Motel, and on two
occasions after the day’s matches were finished the girls ventured into the sea for some “hydro
therapy” on tired muscles and blistered feet. Before long many were in up to their chins, soon
realizing that it was warmer in the water than out!
Overall the team placed 11th out of 48 teams, finishing 3rd in division 2 – an extremely
commendable outcome. Gabi de Boni received the Most Valuable Player award for St Pats,
whilst Danica was voted most valuable player by her fellow team members. The girls, their
coach and manager had a thoroughly enjoyable week, made new friends and shared many
fun times.
