Sometimes hope is given with fruits and vegetables, sometimes with a birthday cake, a winter coat, or a warm quilt.

Sometimes hope can be a listening ear, a hug, a smile, or an encouraging word. Sometimes hope is shared with clients,

Dear Friends,
In 2015, Catholic Charities completed our Saving Children Saving Families Capital
Campaign. The campaign built the new Intensive Treatment Cottage at Catholic
Charities St. Cloud Children’s Home and was the foundation for Catholic Charities’
new endowment. The endowment is a fund that helps ensure our organization’s
operation for years to come.
During one of our campaign meetings, Bob Strack, one of our campaign co-chairs,
asked me, “What is at the heart of Catholic Charities? What is the bigger picture of
what we’re trying to continue?”
My reply was that we, as an organization, believe many things that can be summarized
in four statements:
No one should be without food.
No one should be without a safe place to live.
No one should be without someone to lean on.
No one should be without hope.
Featured inside is one of our programs that accomplishes all of these: Catholic
Charities St. Elizabeth’s Board and Lodge. St. Elizabeth’s serves adults who have
long-term mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, bi-polar disorder and
schizophrenia.
Clients receive meals, a safe, permanent place to live and support to make sure they’re
taking their medications properly. Every day, staff try to help clients live their best lives.
What does that mean? For each client, it’s very different.
What happens to clients without St. Elizabeth’s? Hunger. Homelessness. Most
tragically, hopelessness.
Thank you for supporting Catholic Charities’ important work. Together, we can truly
make a different tomorrow.

Catholic Charities Housing Services fulfills our belief
that no one should be a without a safe place to live.
In numerous communities throughout Central
Minnesota, staff manage housing with affordable
rents. These developments meet the needs of lowand middle-income people, especially families, senior
citizens and persons with disabilities.
Domus Transitional Housing provides temporary
housing to women with children who are transitioning
from homelessness. Transportation has long been an
issue for these women and children because they rely
heavily on public transportation. This adds hours to their
day getting children to and from childcare, while mothers
then travel to work or school. In 2015, a grant from the
Otto Bremer Foundation and a partnership with Yellow
Cab addressed this problem. The impact was immediate,
helping Domus mothers and children save up to 4 hours
per day on travel time.

This is a place of hope
St. Elizabeth helps Brenda stabilize life, look to future
As Brenda, a resident of Catholic Charities St. Elizabeth’s Board and
Lodge, walked around Lake George in St. Cloud this spring, a bench
caught her eye. “I’ve never seen that before,” she said as she walked past a
wet t-shirt and boxer shorts drying on the bench in the warm sun.
She sat down and pointed to a group of large trees across the water.
“I used to sleep over there during the day, I didn’t trust people around here
enough to sleep at night.”
Stay up at night, sleep during the day, that was Brenda’s life during the
four years she was homeless in St. Cloud.
Brenda had followed her abusive boyfriend around the country and finally
to St. Cloud, clinging to a long string of people who abused her physically,
emotionally and sexually. Alcohol dulled most of the pain, but couldn’t
hide everything: it made her major depression and anxiety worse and
exacerbated her borderline personality disorder.
But that was then.
Now, a single and sober Brenda lives at St. Elizabeth’s. Her focus is to
keep her life and mental health stable. While she’s welcome to stay
permanently, she hopes to someday return to her home state.
St. Elizabeth’s is a facility for 18 people with long-term mental illness. Staff
are on-site 24 hours a day to make meals and help residents keep track of
their sometimes complicated medications.
Brenda is using her time at St. Elizabeth’s to work on herself spiritually
and emotionally. “Jesus gives me the strength, courage and determination
to do better.”
She feels blessed to have found the place, where she has a small room
to herself. “Now I can rest. I have clean clothes. I can take care of my
hygiene. When I was homeless, not being able to take a shower was
embarrassing! Not taking care of myself hurt my self-esteem. That made
my depression worse. The staff here are so wonderful, they listen and
encourage us.”
Staff think Brenda is pretty awesome as well. While her expenses at
St. Elizabeth’s are taken care of by federal dollars, Brenda is known as the
house helper. She tidies up, picks up trash and just generally helps when
she can.
“My grandma always told me, ‘you can sleep when you’re dead.’ I want to
be up and moving, being helpful and giving back.”
That’s why Brenda still comes to Lake George to take walks – to be
outside and move. She’s glad to go home to St. Elizabeth’s. “This is the
place to come if you’re struggling. Staff will talk and listen, this is truly a
place of hope.”

Catholic Charities Caritas Family Services works to meet all three of the beliefs

One of the well-known seasonal programs in Caritas is Catholic Charities Share
the Spirit program which matches individuals, families and groups wanting to
“adopt a family” for Christmas with families in need who are referred by local
human services agencies. In keeping with our belief that no one should be
without hope, 788 people were given the Christmas gift of hope in 2015.
One of the recipents wrote to us,
“We would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We’ve had a difficult
year and your generosity really helped to make it a very Merry Christmas. The
kids were excited to receive Legos and Star Wars stuff. Watching them open
their gifts and seeing the smiles on their faces is all that a parent could ask for.
I thank God for people like you who take time to help others.”
• 49,762* people were helped at Catholic Charities Emergency Services.
Clients received food, clothing and financial assistance, along with help
from special programs such as Back to School, Holiday Toy Program**
and Share the Spirit.
• 665 individuals received financial and housing counseling
• 949 adults and children sought assistance through Catholic Charities Caritas
Mental Health Clinic
• 1,440 volunteers provided 42,616 hours of assistance
• 463 adults enrolled in Co-Parenting Your Children classes
• 845 adults living with mental illnesses were provided rehabilitative services
• 45 adults living with mental illnesses were provided residential-based
services
• 161 individuals received translation and interpretation services
• 1,205 adults and children utilized programming provided by La Cruz
Community Center

A strong community needs to support the people that are less
fortunate or in need. Catholic Charities plays a major role in providing
that support for the central Minnesota. Through their programs they
support families in need, children with special needs, youth with
housing, the elderly with food, the disabled with housing and anyone
in need of help with the services that they provide. They provide

Catholic Charities Social Concerns Office implements
and provides ongoing support of parish social ministry
committees in the parishes within the 16 counties of the
Diocese of St. Cloud. Social Concerns also educates and
advocates at the local, state and national levels on
legislative issues relevant to the teaching of the Catholic
Church. It provides support and resources to farm families
and rural communities. It leads activities for the Catholic
Campaign for Human Development in the Diocese of
St. Cloud.

annual event attracted over 350 people from around the
Diocese of St. Cloud.

Catholic Charities Community Services fulfills our belief that
no one should be without food and no one should be without
a safe place to live by reaching out to people of all ages in
communities across our service area, serving them with dignity
and respect. Services include support for homeless youth,
meals and evidence-based health promotions workshops
for seniors, mentors for children, and residential communitybased assistance for adults with developmental disabilities.
To help address the need of getting fresh fruits and vegetables
into the hands of seniors, Catholic Charities expanded the
Plant a Row, Harvest a Row program to all of its Senior Dining
sites across central Minnesota in 2015. This program asks area
gardeners to plant an extra row in their garden that, when
harvested, can be donated to Senior Dining sites, which serve
and distribute fresh fruits and vegetables to seniors. More
than 10,000 servings of fruits and vegetables were provided
to Catholic Charities Meals on Wheels and congregate diners
in 2015.
In March of 2015, Rejuv Medical became a business
community partner, creating a Community Giving Garden on
its property in Waite Park. At the end of the growing season,
more than 270 pounds of produce had been delivered to the
Catholic Charities Senior Dining site at Whitney Senior
Center in St. Cloud.
• 9,137 children were assisted by 174 foster grandparents
• 87 persons with developmental disabilities and their
families received services in their homes
• 22 adults with developmental disabilities lived in
supervised foster homes
• 6 persons with physical disabilities received services in
supervised housing
• 150 adults participated in evidence-based Health
Promotion Classes
• 320,407 meals were served to 6,095 seniors at 38 Senior
Dining sites and in 44 Meals on Wheels communities
• 1,450 volunteers offered 53,051 hours of help
• 44 young people learned life skills through Catholic
Charities Support and Advocacy for Independent
Living (SAIL) program
• 65 homeless youth were mentored as a part of Catholic
Charities Supported Housing for Youth (SHY) program
• 33 homeless youth were given temporary housing and
support services at Catholic Charities Youth House

Catholic Charities presents awards to gentleman
gardeners, bike ride organizers
Catholic Charities of the Diocese of St. Cloud presented its annual Good Samaritan
Awards to two groups of recipients: Mel Rohe and Dave Morreim, and Chuck and
Lucy Rieland.
Recipients are recognized for following the example of the biblical “Good
Samaritan” by helping those who are in need without an expected reward.

Food Shelf? The result has been an
average of about 8,200 pounds of fresh
produce per season - a total of more
than 35 tons to date!
“The monetary value of their donation exceeds $10,000 per year to Catholic Charities
Emergency Services. Combining their knowledge, skills, and resources to help others,
then expect nothing in return, makes them a fine example of Good Samaritans,” said
Kathryn Stolpman, manager of Catholic Charities Food Shelf.

Chuck and Lucy Rieland
For more than 30 years, Chuck Rieland
has worked at Morgan Stanley. On
September 11, 2001, he watched as 45
floors of Morgan Stanley offices in the
World Trade Center crumbled. In the
weeks that followed, Chuck vowed to do
something positive. He and Lucy chose
a bike ride to raise funds for Catholic
Charities St. Cloud Chidlren’s Home.
The Lake Wobegon Ride, has now raised over $790,000 in the past 10 years. With
the continued passion and direction of Chuck and Lucy Rieland, that money has
provided scholarships to more than 60 students. The money goes to help support
students’ continued stay at the Children’s Home when insurance companies have
denied continuing coverage. This year’s Lake Wobegon Ride will take place on
September 10, 2016.

Catholic Charities Residential and Day Services fulfills
our beliefs that no one should be without food, no one
should be without a safe place to live, no one should be
without someone to lean on and most importantly, no
one should be without hope. We do this by educating
and keeping safe the vulnerable youth in our care.
Children dealing with mental illnesses and emotional and
behavioral disorders are assisted with a variety of
programming focused on learning to relate to others in
a positive and meaningful way.
When you think of mental health, you may not think of
food helping in any way, but food often plays a vital role.
Whether it’s learning to eat as a “family” with others at
the Children’s Home or providing a nutritional breakfast
and lunch to children in our day programs who might not
otherwise have it. Food not only provides nourishment for
children’s bodies but also for their minds.
• 129 youth and their families were served by Catholic
Charities St. Cloud Children’s Home
• 33 youth and their families were served at the
Intensive Treatment Cottage at Catholic Charities
St. Cloud Children’s Home
• 143 youth and their families were served by day
programming for youth including Catholic Charities
Youth Learning Center, the Young Learners Program
and Day Treatment programs in Elk River and
St. Cloud
• 10 dedicated volunteers gave 875 hours of support

Sometimes hope can be a listening ear, a hug, a smile, or an encouraging word. Sometimes hope is shared with clients,
sometimes with staff, sometimes with fellow volunteers. But always, I feel it come back to change me.
