President’s Message
by John Oglesby
T
he trees are turning to fall colors and the season for Driving Schools
and Autocross events are coming to a close. That means it’s time
to get ready for a new Karting season, the Autocross awards gathering and to plan those car improvements that you will do over the
winter. This has been a good season for the club with excellent events
and some major milestones being achieved by our racing members.
You might recall that the Board was concerned about the financial
performance of our Driving School events this year due to the world
economic conditions.
I’m happy to report
that the overall season turned out well
and the event we were
most concerned about
at Mont Tremblant
turned out to be well
attended and met our
financial goals. Autocross had another outstanding year and has a new,
very visible presence with the addition of a new Autocross truck that
has outstanding graphics.
The Autocross truck graphics
incorporate a variation of the new
Boston Chapter logo that was just
approved by BMW. The “Official”
BMW logo is a result of inputs by
members of the Chapter that were
combined to meet the graphic requirements of the BMW Corporate
Identity gurus. It incorporates the
BMW Motorsport colors in the approved layout for use with the Roundel. The Chapter also has an “unofficial” simpler version to use without
the Roundel (see the blue column to the left of this section) which works
better for many applications, especially for embroidery and when we
need to add a web address.
On the racing front, we had two
Chapter members achieve major milestones this month. Will Turner’s team
won the Grand-Am Continental Tire
Sports Car Challenge Championship
this year in the Grand Sport category
with their E92M3 and Eric Heinrich
(his car pictured at left) came in third
in the STU class at the SCCA Runoffs at Road America in his first try
with his E30M3. His 20+ year old M3 did extremely well against modern
turbo charged Audis and Mazdas. It may surprise others, but not us
E30M3 drivers! Until next month, Stay on Track! ♦

promised a list of available CPO cars that are for sale.
He is also having coffee and munchkins available for
those early birds at the Dealership.

views, light houses, the oldest co-educational school
in the country, and the oldest wooden structure in the
country in continuous use as a place of worship. There
will be many pastoral settings along the way for your
viewing pleasure. Wompatuck was an Indian chief who
donated to the English settlers what is now known as
the Town of Hingham. Massasoit negotiated a treaty
guaranteeing the English their security.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three places. The
Rally Meisters decision is final. We will end the Rally

About Dana: Dana was one of a handful of Boston Chapter members
who came to our 2nd Quarter Meeting with Steve Dinan (on a night when
the Bruins were also playing for the Stanley Cup). Before leaving his first
event, he stopped by to get more information on our events and based on
his participation since then, I expect to see Dana will play a more prominent role in the future of our club! Interestingly enough, Dana only joined
the BMW CCA after his sales advisor at the BMW Gallery in Norwood
told him that tracking his E90 wouldn’t void the CPO warranty!
“I joined the Boston Chapter of the (BMW) Car Club of America looking to upgrade my driving skills,” said Dana. “My first driving school was
with the Boston Chapter at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. This was
an incredible introduction to what my car was capable of and how much
more I needed to learn in order to drive it properly. I learned enough that
day to know I wanted to come back. So I signed up for Autocross School.
I had no idea what Autocross was, but to get another shot at driving with
an instructor for $80 was too good to pass up. Again, it was an eye opener
(to see) what my BMW could do when driven properly, even at the relatively slow speeds of Autocross. I also signed up for the Advanced Driving
Skills School which gave me another day of steering, throttle and braking
instruction. This was the school I probably should have started with, but
it still worked out well and again I finished the day a better driver than
when I started.”
In the four short months since Dana became a member, he has been one
of our most active members and learned that the club offers participants
more than just an opportunity to hone your driving skills.
“The people in the club were just like me, looking for a place to come
together to share information and have a little fun while doing it. It is all
about the cars. There is something in the club for everyone. Driving schools,
rallies, technical sessions, show and shine events, and racing,” Dana explained.
Dana, we hope that you’ll continue to participate, and bring your friends
into the Boston Chapter fold if for no other reason than to share your passion to become a better driver!

Membership Corner: Join for the cars ... stay for the friends
O
er the past year I’ve been fortunate to be one of the faces or
voices of the Boston BMW CCA
Club. During that time, I’ve met, corresponded and talked on the phone with a large part of
our membership, and the common theme I hear from
those of you who are active participants has always
been the same: the club gets people together for the
cars and they are open and welcoming to all! Despite
this positive feedback, the club is losing rather than
gaining members every month – which is why we need
your help! No one will know how great our club is unless you get involved in our activities and invite your
friends to share the experiences you’ve had and the
new friendships you’ve made.
It’s all about friends and car talk
One thing that our club generally isn’t: is a place for
members to network professionally. Does it happen unofficially? Of course. However, for the vast majority of
active participants, our events foster an opportunity for
us to talk cars – BMWs and MINIs mainly – but we do
have Miata, Porsche, Subaru, Mitsubishi and Corvette
owners in our membership as well. While we may not
write about the other members’ cars in the magazine, if
you come to a driving event, you’ll see that these contingents thrive not only in our club but in their own.
In our chapter’s geographic area, we have two Porsche
clubs, a Miata Club and a Corvette Club, and because
these clubs welcome all car enthusiasts, many of our
BMW CCA members belong to these clubs too. So why
do I bring this up? Well it’s because many people believe (incorrectly), that BMW/MINI ownership is a
requirement for membership, and it just isn’t true!
It’s an opportunity to learn
I’ll be the first to tell you that I don’t know very much
about non-BMWs, but I enjoy learning about all kinds of
cars. Every opportunity I get to attend an events (after
getting permission from my wife and daughter), I make
it a point to ensure that everyone feel welcome and that
I get to know more about their car or cars. Just the fact
that you came to an event, is reason enough for me to
say “Hi, my name is Eric ... tell me about your car.”
Personally speaking, I enjoy learning the nuances of
other marques and makes. Up until last week, I didn’t
know that Porsche 911s all have their engine in the rear
and that the cost of Miata brake pads are cheaper than
my baby’s formula.
Spread the word
Here’s my plea to our current membership, start telling your co-workers, friends and family about our club.
Tell them about autocross, driving schools, our karting
events and the friendships you’ve made along the way
and mention that nearly everyone of our events doesn’t
require BMW/MINI
ownership and that the
only pre-requisite is a
love of cars – and see
how they respond. Introduce them to me on
via email, and I’ll send
them a pdf of our Membership Guide. I will also

boot” at Watkins Glen

take time to explain why joining the
BMW CCA is a way for them to try
new and exciting things – and way
to spice up their life. If they’re interested, I’ll tell them about our driving
events and invite them to bring their
Ford F-150 to our ADSS to see what
we do. I’ll plant the seed, and let you
do the nurturing. AND, if all goes
well, it won’t be long before they’re
part of our circle of “car-crazed”
friends at Autocross, high performance driving school or for a laid
back technical event. They may even
join the members who buy a trailer
and have a dedicated car!! Personally, I’m not there yet. I finally have
a special car for autocross and track
events (although you can use your
daily driver), but I still drive it to
events.
BUT, don’t be afraid to go alone.
I met most of my friends in the
chapter only after I attended few
events. Now I have like minded
friends I meet up with at BMW
Chapter events. In fact, I just returned from Watkins Glen with
John Chiu, Bill Harding and Christian Iantosca; three guys whom I
met at our February Karting event
at F1Boston in Braintree, MA and
hatched a plan to attend the school
together. We drove from Boston
together, stayed at the same hotel,
drove in the same run group, and
even shared meals. To cap off a
great weekend, we swapped cars
on the way home to make a 400
mile drive seem short!. It was a
weekend that I’ll never forget!

Bimmers Across the Borders XIII:
An annual pilgrimage that delivers adventure,
experience and the desire to return
– Story by Christo Tinkov
M
y family’s plans for our annual pilgrimage to
Mont Tremblant were as sound as ever: pack
the night before, have a nice breakfast together,
leave just after rush hour and get through Montreal before 3 PM when they close off one of the highway lanes
going through the city.
a 3-mile slalom! What do you do while stuck on the
bridge for over an hour? Let’s see if we can figure out
why so many people here drive small cars and everyone smokes cigarettes … Trust me, it’s a much better
option than jumping off the bridge!
Ideal execution vs. reality
Our spirits brightened up at the site of Le Sommet Des
Neiges – our chapter had again picked great hotels and
negotiated fantastic rates for family friendly vacations.
Le Sommet is in the center of the village just off the ski
slopes gondola and close to the entertainment and all
the restaurants and shops. It has European quality in
North American size rooms – best of both worlds!
Our execution was as bad as any other year: sleep late,
pack the morning of the event, have Trail Mix in the
car for breakfast, leave too late, and get to Montreal
right smack in the middle of rush hour. Hey, look at
this: they’ve got another autocross course set up all
over the damn bridge. Same layout as any other year:

Tremblant is sometimes challenging. This year, the bridge

nearly as interesting.

A bright spot on the horizon
An “X-tra” surprise
The racetrack and the facilities
around it keep getting better every
year. Tremblant has a nearly clublevel look and feel to it now. No
wonder this is the only racetrack
outside of Italy where Maranello
runs driving schools for Ferrari
owners. And speaking of Ferraris,
the racetrack’s owner had his own
Ferrari FXX in pit road over the
entire weekend. What a sight to behold! There are only 30 Ferrari FXXs
ever made and this is one of only 3
whose owners are allowed to take it
home and do whatever they’d like
with it. All other FXX owners have
to keep their cars at the factory or a
dealer. The owners of the other 27 FXXs
can drive them on designated tracks and
then they have to return them back to
storage – pretty incredible since they
each paid 2 million dollars to own one.
Makes me wonder who the other 2 owners with these special privileges might
be. Michael Schumacher
and Ferrari president Luca
di Montezomolo? I could
not help but go down to pit
road, make friends with the

My day at the track started with a tough test of my
under-developed skills
as a mechanic. One of my
325i’s front calipers seized
up due to rust, and I had
to rebuild it on the fly.
This is not a job for the
faint of heart. The brake
fluid leaks all over the
place, you need to do a
few cycles of scrubbing,
sanding and washing with
brake cleaner and you
need great precision to
put the piston back
in place correctly.
Patience helped a lot
and when it did not,
cursing did the trick.
The job also required
a few specialized
cleaning instruments
that could most easily be found in a
dentist office.
I was able to complete the caliper
rebuild successfully
after a few hours
only with the decisive help of a dedicated think-tank led by Neil Halin (a doctor who in real
life is used to navigating microscopic tools down human arteries and into
even tighter spaces). With the help of my team and a lot of hard work, I ended
up having one of those memorable “I made fire!” moments, which was probably the highlight of my weekend. Despite my mechanic saga, I still got over
8 hours of track time over 3 days — enough to start running out of brakes,
tires and energy — just before hurricane Irene moved into the area.
A multi-dimensional drivers’ meeting
The organizers put together one of the best drivers’
meetings of any event I have been to in 10 years.
Everyone’s favorite part was event chair Joe Marko
showing the passing zones using chief instructor Barry
Tarr’s track map. The track map found on the front of
his shirt, that is. He specifically focused on the track’s
elevation changes following the shirt’s “natural terrain.” All dips and valleys were accounted for in great
detail and special emphasis was placed on the hills.
Anything more fun than this and Joe and Barry would
have to start charging all drivers admission fee to the
drivers’ meeting!
Professional track photographer
Professional track photographer Pierre Goyette
took some spectacular pictures at the event. There is
something about the light and overall atmosphere at
Tremblant that make the pictures look incredible. I put
together a slideshow video from the event here:
http://www.onehotlap.com/2011/09/slideshow-video-from-le-circuit-mont.html
I am already looking forward to an even bigger, better and more action packed event next year. Even if
Barry is threatening that most of the track map’s elevation changes will be gone by then! ♦

Brakes:
bleeding
vs.
flushing
Part
2
– story and photo by Vic Lucariello
H
ello, Bimmerphiles! This month we are continuing the discussion of brake
bleeding and brake-fluid flushing. Last month we talked about brake-system
bleeding and brake-fluid flushing and the purpose of each. Bleeding is
intended to remove any air or other gas bubbles from the hydraulic system, while
flushing is done to replace old, contaminated brake fluid with fresh new fluid.
Of course, a good flush will tend to remove any entrained gasses. Air or gas bubbles in your brake (or
clutch) system can cause a low a “spongy” pedal, while
contaminated fluid, in addition to fomenting corrosion,
can boil under severe-use conditions and cause ... a low
“spongy” brake pedal. Generally speaking, when all
is said and done, the main difference between brake
bleeding and brake-fluid flushing is the amount of fluid
put through the system.
Different methods
There are several methods of bleeding brakes and
changing brake fluid, and some methods may be better
than others for problem situations. With one exception,
all the methods we’ll talk about involve fluid movement from the master cylinder, down to the calipers
and out of the system. In the case of brake bleeding, the
idea is that any air will be expelled with the discharged
fluid. I guess the various methods can be categorized
as “pressure” or “vacuum.” Let’s begin with vacuum.
Before we begin, note that regardless of what method
you use, you should be capturing all expelled brake
fluid in a suitable container via a piece of tubing
attached to the bleeder screw. Brake fluid handily removes most paints. And, trust me on this, you definitely
do not want to get brake fluid in your eyes! I always
use clear-vinyl tubing so that I can observe the color of
the expelled fluid as well as any bubbles. Suitable vinyl
tubing can be had at any hardware store, and, I always
have my eye protection on! Always.
The vacuum method
Vacuum bleeding/flushing involves applying suction
to the caliper-bleeder screws. This can be accomplished
with a Vacula or Mityvac shop-air-powered “brake
bleeder,” or with a simple hand pump as shown in
Photo #1. This particular hand pump is by Phoenix Systems, and it is suitable for both “normal” and “reverse”
bleeding (more on this later). While the air-powered
vacuum bleeders are faster, the hand pump works just
as well.
Although vacuum bleeding/flushing is popular with
many folks and is relatively fast to set up, there are a
couple of disadvantages to it in my opinion. I guess
what bothers me most is that since suction is applied
to the bleeder screw, you can get fugitive air sucked in
Photos:

Above: photo #2: Wrapped Bleeder Screw
16 | Boston Bimmer • September / October 2011
around the bleeder-screw threads, and you can’t tell
if this air is coming from the brake system or sneaking around the bleeder screw. You can minimize the
amount of fugitive air by wrapping the bleeder-screw
threads in Teflon tape. However, be sure to keep the
tape off of the tapered seat on the bleeder screw. Photo
#2 depicts a bleeder screw wrapped in Teflon tape.
A purported advantage of the vacuum method is that
it tends to enlarge any bubbles in the system, thereby
making them easier to entrain and remove. This sounds
quite reasonable to me. Vacuum bleeding/flushing is
generally a bit slower than pressure bleeding (more on
this later), and usually vacuum bleeding can only be
applied to one bleeder screw at a time. Moreover, one
needs to keep close watch on the brake-fluid-reservoir
level (this applies to some other methods as well) to
ensure that it does not empty and introduce air into the
brake system.
“Pump it up ... Hoooold it ... OK” litany. One of my first
jobs when I began working in the corner “gas station”
in Newark lo’ those many years ago was to be the P-T-P
assistant. And that reminds me of one of the disadvantages of the P-T-P method.
Footnote: a word about assistants
When doing the ol’ P-T-P routine, your assistant has to
be very careful not to release the brake pedal before you
say “OK.” (Of course, you also need to be very careful
not to say “OK” until you have closed the dang bleeder
screw.) If the pedal is released before the bleeder screw
is closed, the system will suck in a nice shot of air. In
this, family-oriented publication, I cannot tell you what
ol’ ‘Pino Cocuzzo said to me in that Gulf station the first
Pressure method: Gravity
Pressure bleeding/flushing can be sub-divided into
several categories: gravity, pump-the-pedal (P-T-P),
and external pressure. In the gravity method, one simply opens one or more bleeder screws and allows fluid
to flow from the system. The gravity method is perhaps
the slowest of all the methods I know of, and in some
cases, depending upon the arrangement of the system
and how long the brake lines are, one
may get little or no brake-fluid flow
from one or more bleeder screws.
Also, since this method is relatively slow, one tends to get impatient
and walk away, perhaps forgetting
to keep an eye on the all-important
brake-fluid-reservoir level.
THE FOREIGN MOTORCARS DIFFERENCE
Pressure method: pump
the petal
That brings us to pumping the brake
pedal. In this very popular (in the
DIY set) method, one has an assistant pump the brake pedal, then hold
foot pressure on it while the bleeder
screws are opened one at a time. The
pumping action of the master cylinder is used to expel fluid and any
entrained gas. Then (hopefully) after
the bleeder screw is re-closed, the assistant releases the brake pedal and
the sequence is repeated ... over ...
and ... over ... and, well, you get the
picture. Any of you who has spent
any time in repair shops or track
garages has undoubtedly heard the

time I took my foot off the brake pedal too soon.
Speaking of less-than-competent assistants, I’ll never
forget the time I was bleeding the brakes on my hot
rod in an effort to alleviate a spongy brake pedal. I
must have repeated the “Pump it – hold it” litany for
15 minutes (at least it seemed that long) with no success
before I realized that my assistant was depressing the
CLUTCH pedal.
Pluses and minuses of P-T-P
Assistant incompetence aside, my main concerns regarding P-T-P bleeding/flushing are that it takes quite
a while, and many pedal cycles, to pump a liter of fluid
through the system, and that the master-cylinder’s
piston seals are dragged repeatedly over areas in the
master-cylinder bore that they normally do not contact.
In uncommon cases (perhaps more likely with older,
cast-iron-body master cylinders), this can cause the
master cylinder to fail. Yes, this has happened to me. Of
course, one needs to keep close watch on the fluid level
when using the P-T-P method. And ... a closer watch on
the assistant!
The P-T-P method does have one great advantage
over the other methods we are talking about. Even
moderate foot pressure on a brake pedal can produce
1000 psi (pounds per square inch) pressure in the brake
system. To put that in perspective, the pressure provided by a common pressure bleeder (more on this
later) is only about 20 psi. Opening a bleeder screw
with 1000 psi behind it results in a high-velocity jet of
brake fluid, and this high velocity can sometimes expel
a recalcitrant air bubble that has resisted other methods
of brake bleeding. I rarely have to resort to P-T-P when
bleeding a brake system. And of course, when you are
doing a simple fluid flush, there should be no air in the
system to begin with.
That brings us to external-pressure bleeding/flushing and unfortunately to the end of Philes’ Forum for
this month. See you next time, Bimmerphiles.

behind the wheels : by ina ames
Wheel & Tire update
T
his month’s article is a compilation of information
including questions from customers and important
information about tire and wheel care. However,
we thought it was important to start with a look at a
cost trend in the current market.
News on tire prices & About.com
As some of you may already know, the cost of rubber has already gone up 260% over the last two years.
We have been informed that somewhere between the
beginning of October and the beginning of November,
many major tire manufacturers will be increasing their
prices up to 10%. We suggest that you buy your tires in
September if at all possible or as soon as possible. We’re
recommending buying both winter and your next summer tires if you’ve got 25,000 to 30,000 miles on them.
In some cases, this 10% increase is already the third of
the season.
As you all know, we recommend the Nokian tires
for winter because we feel they are the safest, and at
this point, their use of a canola oil-based rubber compound is now more competitive in terms of price. All
tire vendors including us carry many other brands of
winter tires. So when you are getting ready to make a
purchase, ask for specific recommendations from you
retailer, and please feel free to contact us to get our
recommendations for tires based on your car and your
driving style.
We are also pleased to announce that Sean Phillips, our Operations Manager, is now also the Tires
and Wheels Guide for About.com. Sean will be writing articles and keeping a blog, so log and send him
your questions.
Questions you’ve sent us
The following are all questions we have been asked by
our customers. Hopefully this will increase your tire
and wheel knowledge base.
Q:
A:
If I fix one of my four bent wheels will that stop the
vibration my car is having?
No. In fact, it might make it worse. Also, bent
wheels cause uneven wear on your tires and will
have them wear out faster. As a result, your wheels are
more vulnerable to being bent even worse and to crack.
Q:
A:
We are often asked if a cracked wheel can really
be fixed?
Yes, … but. You can repair cracked wheels that are
cracked on the inner flange and are structurally
sound to repair. However, you cannot have a weld on
the upper flange repaired, because it is not structurally
sound to do so. If a repair is made, make sure the work
is done by a certified welder to ensure safety.
Q:
A:
Q:
A:
Rather than straightening a wheel, can it be fixed
by balancing it?
No. It’s like putting a band aid on a stab wound.
Not for that purpose!
Why is it dangerous to drive on a tire with a bubble
in it?
A bubble on your tire can blow up and out, which
will cause your car to go out of control. You can’t
tell if a bubble will last 5 minutes, hours, days, or
months. However, you do know that when it happens,
your life is endangered. Saving the cost of a new tire
versus an accident or death is not worth the gamble.
Q:
A:
I have a friend who offered me his old wheels. I can
put my friend’s wheels on my car, right?
Sorry, but probably not. In order to be able to put a
wheel on a car it must have the same bolt pattern,
offset, and be able to properly fit in the wheel well.
While it’s not impossible, it’s unlikely. It used to be that
most wheels from BMW 3 series fit other BMW 3 series
cars. This is no longer true for the most part. In the last
few years, BMW has mixed up the offsets on newer cars
to stop owners from being able to put easily available
wheels on newer cars.
We have been asked all those questions. As always,
please feel free to call anyone on my staff with any
questions about wheels and tires. ♦

the joys & pitfalls of rebuilding: by chris hatch
The joys & pitfalls of rebuilding a 2005 330Ci
... excerpts from the blog of Chris Hatch
Editor’s note: Chris Hatch documented his quest to buy and rebuild
a BMW on his blog space where he
still occasional adds updates. He
started the project in 2009 when
he was still a high school student.
If you want to read his entire journey from start to finish and see
pictures documenting the full process, log on to his blog site at:
http://forum.e46fanatics.com/
showthread.php?t=723259&page=1
What follows is an edited version
of his blog with some pictures of
his “new” 2005 330Ci. Thank you,
Chris for sharing your story and
your passion for your new BMW.
If you are tackling a special BMW
project, drop me a note so we can
feature it in an upcoming Boston
Bimmer.
Above: This is how my 330Ci looked the
day I brought her home: broken but with her
noble lines still visible.
Next page top: From the beginning the back
of the car looked like new. Unfortunately the
expensive stuff isn’t in the back.
Next page bottom: During the breakdown
stage of the process, I was able to pinpoint
the areas hurt in the crash and developed a
strategy for repairs.
20 | Boston Bimmer • September / October 2011
– story and photos by Chris Hatch
[Excepts from Chris’s blog, written as the work took place. ]
asically, I was looking to purchase an 01-03 330Ci. Needed to be
a manual, with ~55k miles, good colors, and mostly a good price
(max about $12,500). I started my search looking at a few cars but
none worked out (one was an automatic). Then one day I spotted a
salvage, wrecked 2005 330Ci ZHP on eBay. It was perfect, colors were
great, 6-speed manual, cold weather, 54k miles, plus all the extras I was
looking for. Now, obviously this was going to be a risk and I didn’t
want to end up with a bunch of money in the car. In the end I bid what
I believed it was worth to me and to my surprise I got it! Within a week
I had sent the money to the dealer and was ready to go pick it up. The
car was located near Philadelphia, PA, and arranged to pick it up the
day after Thanksgiving in 2009. We made it there and back by dinner
time ... [and so the project started.]
B
The Project:
Basically, I want to complete my car within two months at a reasonable
price. All parts will be factory OEM. Most all of the work will be done
by myself (except the inner fender work and paint). Overall I want to
make the car look just as it did before the accident while spending a
reasonable amount all with factory parts. The work will be high-quality
and it should be as if it had never been hit at all.
Breakdown and inspection phase 1:
I started with an inventory of the damage.
1.Removed hood: Very simple, one hood shock is blown, the other is
intact. All wiring, insert, and even the emblem (amazingly) are good.
Hood, not so much.
2.Removed headlight & misc: Left Xenon is near-perfect, top two clips broken but can be repaired. Removed other little things before the bumper.
3.Removed front bumper: The bumper is surprisingly intact, the reinforcement is just barely bent, so really the only bad part is the
bumper cover. Grille insert is good as well.
4.Removed radiator support: The radiator support came off pretty easily, but it is mangled.
5.Removed belly pan: Removing the belly pan was a
breeze, but there was a lot of broken stuff on it.
6.Removed radiator: Removing the radiator was a pain
... and we had to clip the connector to the coiling
coil. The radiator still had coolant in it and the steering pump still had oil and both went everywhere. We
cleaned it up and it’s done leaking now.
7.Remove intake: Hadn’t planned on this but found out
that the intake is shot. It’s got a big crack in it. Only
good thing is I can order a Dinan one now!
8.Remove airbag: Well, I tried to remove the airbag.
I got it out, except the wires won’t disconnect. On
further inspection, the clips on the wires actually
melted into the plastic, I assume from the airbag deployment. For now, the airbag will sit there.
Good news
[An update following the first inspection and break down]
The frame suffered no structural damage. The frame
rail was tweaked every so slightly to the right about .25
of an inch and up about .25 of an inch, but the frame
machine fixed that. The car has been inspected for any
damage that would cause concern, and so far there is
none. ... This wasn’t a bad accident. I’ve seen cars that
have been hit three times as hard and been repaired.
Breakdown and inspection phase 2:
I already found out most of the problems, but there
were still little things to be found.
1.Right door: The right door is perfect, except for a little scrape right next to where the fender would have
been. Fortunately, this didn’t effect the structure at all
and the door lines up, and opens and closes perfectly.
2.Right fender: Obviously, it is gonzo. Good part is the
wire for the turn signal is good and so is the turn
signal itself!
3.Front: Once everything else was removed, I inspected
the front, and there is nothing wrong. Every bit of
damage here was contained in front of the engine.
4.Left fender: The left fender is good although it was
tweaked a teeny bit. Looks suspiciously like someone
meant to do it.
5.Left door: The left door is perfect, and the door lines
up and opens and closes well.
6.There are a few other things: 1) The windshield is
cracked although I already knew that. 2) The ground
wiring was cut in one spot by the fender on impact,
but we bent the fender back and are going to splice
the ground that was cut back together soon. 3) This
thingy broke (haven’t taken time to figure out what it
is yet); 4) and the A/C drier line is tweaked but looks
like it can be shaped back to normal.
7.The good news: the car has ballast’s for right Xenon,
right turn signal, and carpets in the trunk. The car
also has near-new brakes, rotors, tires and I’m pretty
sure the oil was changed as well! From the rear you
can’t even tell there’s damage!
Overall: A little more than I had anticipated, but that
is to be expected in a wreck. Overall it was a very light
hit that was on the borderline of a total loss. The parts
I ordered should be in Thursday, December 10 and I’ll
probably install the radiator the same day. Saturday I’m
taking her down to the Body Shop and they’re going
to be doing a front end pull and will repair and install
the inner fender. I’ll probably order parts when I know
exactly what I need.
The 2 month rebuild
[Chris’s estimate of 2 months to complete was a little optimistic, but his enthusiasm could not be dampened. Here is
a recounting of one day’s work, among many more to come.

3.Install Radiator & Remove Radiator Support
4.Clean Engine Bay, Connect All Radiator Components,

5.Put in Radiator Coolant, Bled, & Started Her Up with
no Trouble!!
I got a lot done today, although it was a lot more
work than it looks like in the pictures. I have also ordered a bunch of little parts I’m missing. All will be
here on Tuesday at which point I hope to have a hood,
and I may have a new windshield installed on Monday. OEM is the only way to go. When I’m done with
the car I want it to be as if it had never been hit, just
happened to have the cooling system, right fender, and
windshield replaced – lol. And the cooling system isn’t
a bad thing to replace anyway!
isn’t bad considering. The good part is it will have all
brand new factory parts (except the hood)!
[ Chris had many hurdles to get his MA registration. Here
is a note in his blog about one he didn’t expect.] In Massachusetts, to get a re-built title you need the original
insurance appraisal which the dealer in PA didn’t give
me when they sold me the car. I called them Thursday
and they said they’d have it in a couple days.
Inspection Day 1
Well guys I have sad news, I failed the re-built title
inspection.
• I bought a used airbag and got a copy of the front of
the title. It turns out that I need a copy of the back
as well, along with a receipt which includes the VIN
number of the car it came from.
Update 14 weeks into the project
[Chris isn’t done yet, but he’s getting close to having the
rebuild done. On his blog people are asking about the bottom
line.] People keep asking how much this has cost. That’s
a depressing question, but it was $7950 for the car, and
the estimated final cost for parts, labor, paint and misc.
is currently at $5,480 according to my spreadsheet. So
final estimated cost is $13,430. [Maybe a little because of
a few things that happened at the inspection.] I was really
hoping to be in the car for $12,500, but a $1000 spread

• I need the receipt for the hood I bought, I hoped because it was aftermarket that it didn’t matter. Not so!
• On the original insurance appraisal the passenger
airbag needed to be replaced (even though it obviously didn’t go off) among other things. So, to
confirm that it didn’t go off and that it’s the original
airbag, they want me to take the passenger airbag ...
out of the car???
Yea getting it retitled is a pain, especially if you don’t
have a trailer to bring it around with. I learned they
are really picky about receipts. I had an eBay & PayPal
receipt and they wouldn’t accept either.
Oops: After failing inspection, I took the airbag
cover off and what do I find? A blown airbag. Apparently the dealer thought it would be super-cool to replace
the airbag cover so it would look like it didn’t go off. In
hindsight, I noticed that they did write in the ad that both
airbags had deployed, I just forgot ... since there were no
visual problems. So, I’ll be buying a passenger airbag and
hopefully going for the inspection the next day.
Inspection Day 2
Alright, so we load the trailer up this morning, and
we’re at the gate to the inspection site at 7 a.m. I’m first
in line. So we wait, and the state policeman shows up
at 8:30 (half hour late). To begin with, he’s mad that I
have an “unregistered, uninsured automobile on public
roads.” I’m on an access road and we’re literally 2-feet
away from the inspection site, but it’s still bad. Next
he’s mad that I have a carbon fiber hood and really mad
that the hood has no shocks and I’m using a wood plank
to keep it up. Next he’s mad that I didn’t get the back of
the title for the airbag (couldn’t from the guy I bought
it from in time). Despite all of this, after two hours of
waiting, he did agree to call the guy I bought the airbag
from, and he says that he’ll let us off the hook for all the
[aforementioned] issues. Now he starts the car, and the
airbag light comes on. End of Story. Airbag light = no
pass. So, I failed the inspection again. He says I need
the back of the title for the driver’s airbag, hood shocks,
and I need to get the airbag light off. ... What a fun day!
Getting ready for inspection 3
There are no reset tools for face lifts that are by any
means cheap, but my Uncle knows a guy who has a
reset tool who was willing to help us out. So, we ran
the reset and all the code’s cleared except for one. Passenger Airbag. So I started to disconnect the passenger
airbag, and I realize that the clip is different. Turns out
the company had sent an airbag from a 1998 rather than
a 2005. Therefore, the airbag I received is a single-stage
airbag rather than a dual-stage and it won’t work. So,
I ordered another airbag from a 2005 325Ci along with
another M3 hood shock. I also received (finally) the
back of the title on the driver’s airbag. ... Planning on
going [back] next week.
Finally legal!
Well Today I finally got it insured and registered. I
cleaned the rusty brakes and wheels and gave the car
a wash while I waited for the plates. Picked them up
at 4:30 and drove around for an hour. I’m still a little
shaky with the clutch (stalled twice), but I should have
it down soon. [Later that year he reports:]... I love the car
and it brings me joy every time I get in it, it’s awesome!!
I’ve gone to three car shows with my friends. And yes,
I’ve finally painted the hood!
UPDATE
Car is running, driving, great! I had a performance
alignment & brake fluid flush back in August. Did my
first Autocross in August 2010. ... So overall the car is
running and driving great and I keep doing little mechanical and cosmetic upgrades to it and will continue
to do so. Having fun with it at Autocross. ♦

AlphaCars Tech Seesion:
– story by Dana Russian, photos by Roy Wicklund
O
n the evening of July 20th, 12 lucky Boston Chapter members were treated to an undercarriage tech
session at Alpha Cars in Boxborough, Massachusetts. General manager Dmitry Bykovsky and his two
technicians gave us a complete tour of their state of the
art facilities at Alpha Cars, Next, we all watched as each
car was inspected, first the engine bay and then up on
the lift to view the undercarriage. We all got to under
the cars with the technicians. The cars reanged from a
1987 M6 to a 9,000 mile garage queen E46 M3. This was
all done gratis by the generosity of Alpha Cars and its
employees.
Beautiful facilities &
top-notch technicians
I already knew that their showroom
was beautiful, as they had hosted some
wine tastings in years past, but I was
doubly impressed with how clean and
organized the shop area was kept, and
it’s air conditioned to boot! The vin-

tage cars and scale models in the showroom are all a
must see if you are in the neighborhood.
If you are reading this and have never been to
an undercarriage tech day, I urge you to go to one,
whether you do your own work or not. I always learn
something new, and the Alpha Cars’ event was no
exception. Their technicians really know their way
around BMWs, and they showed me some problem
areas in the newer cars of which I was totally unaware.
For instance, on the air boot intake on the E46 (19992006 3 series), there is a place where they crack in the
back that can only be seen by an inspection mirror.
Mine was torn, and though it doesn’t set off the “check
engine” light it does allow hot unfiltered air into the
engine, which is not a good thing!
An impressive overview
Other areas were discussed, including: the importance of changing
brake fluid at least every two years,
what to do when your run-flat tires
wear out, and the difference between
a “weeping” seal and a leaking one.
Alexey, one of the technicians, really dislikes the run-flats that are
standard on most modern BMWs,
and recommends replacing them
with regular tires while carrying a
compressor and “fix-a-flat” in the
trunk. He advises keeping an eye
on the transmission and differential
levels if there is any weeping visible
around the seals. Just because it’s
not leaving a puddle of oil under the
car doesn’t mean that the level isn’t falling, and how
many of us check the level of those two fluids? And
how many of you know that there is a filter in the bottom of the power steering reservoir that can only be
changed by replacing the whole reservoir (don’t worry,
it’s cheap)?
I’ve been under cars for a long time, but I was really
impressed by how quickly Alexey could size up the
specific problem areas under each car: the ball joints
in the suspension and the steering linkage, the rubber bushings, the condition of the brakes, exhaust,
fuel lines, driveshaft, tires and oil leaks and more. The
kind of knowledge that these techs have comes from
decades of hands on experience and excellent training.
I was really impressed.
The three hours went by quickly. It was a tremendous learning experience for all of us, and we are all
very appreciative of Dmitry and Alpha Cars for hosting this event. ♦
