2012 Fall Meeting
At the October meeting, a report was delivered on a recent trip to the Boston area (Rick and Tracy)
earlier in the month. A PowerPoint Presentation highlighted a visit to the Harvard Museum of
Natural History which houses the Blaschka glass flowers exhibit.
Between the years 1886 and 1936, naturalists Leopold
and Rudolf Blaschka from Germany near Dresden, were
funded by the Harvard botany department to create glass
teaching models.
Over the period, they crafted life-size, anatomicallycorrect glass models of 800 species. The examples are
made entirely of glass, often reinforced internally with
wire support.
At the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Lime Green
Icicle Tower created by American glass artist, Dale
Chihuly, measures 40 feet high, weighs about 10,000
lbs., and contains 2,342 individual glass pieces
mounted on a steel armature.
Other highlights from the trip, including visits to the Sandwich Glass Museum, The New Bedford
Museum of Glass, Ed Poore’s Crystal Workshop and others, will be shared at future meetings.
2012 Holiday Social
Our thanks to Jean and Bill Badke for hosting the December Holiday Social. Members enjoyed the
warm hospitality and the delightful selection of food. We missed seeing a number of paperweight
friends due to the arrival of the flu season in the Toronto area.
Show & Tell was lively and we were treated to, at last, seeing the
Lotton Glass Lamp won by Jean in a lucky draw last year.
www.lottonglass.com
Jean had purchased a hibiscus paperweight from the Lotton Gallery
in Chicago around Christmas, 2011. The Gallery was holding a
draw for several vases and a lamp. She was pleasantly surprised to
receive a phone call from Charles Lotton advising that her name
had been drawn for the lamp. Due to its size, it was shipped to
Toronto in two pieces. There are, apparently, only four lamps of
this type. The owners are the Smithsonian, the Corning Museum,
the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Badke’s.
PCA Ontario Exhibit at Upper Canada Village
Upper Canada Village hosted “The World of Glass Weekend”, Sept. 22-23, 2012 in Morrisburg,
Ontario. PCA Ontario volunteers, Rick and Tracy Willson, were on-site with an educational
display featuring the unique world of glass paperweights from
the 1850’s through to present day.
This glass weekend event was the first held at Upper Canada
Village. Exhibits were located throughout the Village. PCA
Ontario’s exhibit was located in the Discovery Center at the
entrance. Other exhibitors included the art glass of David
Paterson, an unveiling of the restored Horwood stained glass
windows, magic lanterns and various other artisans and
activities. The Bytown Bottle Collectors from Ottawa were
unable to attend. Thankfully, the weather cleared on Saturday
and Sunday after heavy rain and cool conditions on Friday.
The Village was pleased with the turnout and may consider including this glass event in future
years.

Our thanks to the folks at L.H. Selman for the loan of components used in the exhibit to illustrate
the stages involved in the making of a millefiori paperweight.
PCA Ontario Presentation to Islington Day Club
The Islington Day Club located in Stuart East Hall, Etobicoke, was recently treated to a
presentation delivered by Tracy on early to current paperweight examples. The PowerPoint photo
presentation was supplemented with a hands-on approach to viewing paperweights. Most of the
audience had never before had an opportunity to hold a weight in their hand.

Antiques Roadshow Featured Paperweight
The Antiques Roadshow segment aired on January 14, 2013 at 7 PM featured an antique millefiori
paperweight. Paperweights, for some reason, turn up infrequently on the Roadshow. BBC’s
Fergus Gambon dated the weight as being from the 1850’s and described it as glorious with subtle
colouration. The millefiori arrangement included canes of various sizes with a much larger central
cane common to the Bacchus factory. The value was estimated as £2,500-£3,000.
UPDATE: Evacuation at JFK After Paperweight Mistaken For Grenade
From ABC7’s Eyewitness News report [Adam Taylor, Sept. 27, 2012, 4:51 PM]
“Breaking News: The customs area at Terminal 4 at JFK was evacuated as officials investigate a
grenade found in a traveller’s bag.
Update: More details from ABC. The passenger told officials that the grenade was inert, but the
evacuation was carried out as a precaution. The grenade is now being inspected.
The passenger had arrived on a flight from Tel Aviv via Moscow.
Update 2: All clear given after the “grenade” turned out to be a paperweight, according to New
York Port Authority.”

Definitions
Motif: The internal design or subject matter of a paperweight. (also setup)
Encase (also encapsulate): To enclose the motif of a paperweight in glass. A
completed overlay weight may also be further encased in clear glass to make
an encased overlay weight.
Spoke: A section of glass rod, ribbon or filigree, laid out like the spoke of a
wheel. These were used in the very rare Clichy spoke weights. (See Fig. 575)
In contemporary times Perthshire often used spokes as a design element, to
divide canes in some of their patterned millefiori weights.
