A Real “Restomod” Moment . . .
W
elcome to Restomod Corner which is sponsored by
Mustangs Plus in Stockton, California. I’ve always said that
the Mustang clubs are the life blood of the Mustang hobby
and I truly believe it. So much so that Cindy and I have
belonged to somewhere around 30 Mustang clubs from all
over the United States for many, many years. That is, give
or take a couple of clubs at any one time. And just to keep
the record straight, these are all Mustang clubs that Cindy
and I pay our membership dues to so that we can be a part of
the club and feel that we are a part of the club. I would not
feel that I’m supporting the club if we took memberships for
free because I know it cost the clubs many dollars a year to
service each membership. Now, I know your next question.
“Why do we belong to so many different clubs?” The answer
is simple. Because there are so many different ways to enjoy
Mustangs and each club’s membership determines the way
that their club promotes and enjoys the Mustang hobby. All
Mustang clubs may be Mustang clubs, but not all Mustang
clubs behave the same as all the other Mustang clubs!
That brings me what this Restomod Corner is all about.
While going on a Mustang run with our friends in the Sierra
Mustang Club in Sacramento, California, I had a real “Restomod” moment. That is to say, I got a real appreciation
of what a Restomod Mustang really is. Cindy and I enjoy
belonging to the Sierra Mustang Club because the members
are always putting a run together to go some place that’s a
lot of fun. It may be somewhere local or somewhere further
away that requires an over night stay. But whichever it is,
Cindy and I know that we’re going to have a good time and
we really look forward to getting out and driving one of our
Mustangs on these trips with our friends. It was on the most
recent trip that I had my real “Restomod” moment that made
us appreciate our 1965 Black Restomod Mustang Coupe so
much!
Mustang Coupe, with the fiberglass hood, truck lid with molded
in spoiler, ground effects and 18” tires and wheels, stood out in
the group like a sore thumb! So for this trip, which was going
to be about a 200 round mile trip for us, we decided to drive our
stock and original (except for radial tires and 4-row radiator)
1965 Springtime Yellow Mustang convertible.
Now, our little 1965 Springtime Yellow Mustang convertible
is a very nice driver, but not a show car. It has 95,000 miles on it
and they are original, as far as I can tell. It’s a “C” code 289 with
the original 2bbl carburetor and a 3 speed manual transmission.
As for options, an AM radio and style steel wheels, which I’m
fairly sure a previous owner bought and added to the car, are all
there is. That’s it. A nice, but Spartan by today’s standards, little
Mustang convertible. It runs like a top and is just and pretty as
it can be. I filled it up with gas the night before and the next
morning it was off to Sacramento to meet up with our friends in
the Sierra Mustang Club at a local McDonalds about 20 away
from our first stop.
The Sierra Mustang Club members were surprised to see Cindy and I driving
our stock 1965 convertible to a club event. “I didn’t know you even owned a
stock Mustang!”, one club member told me. Yes, it looks great for a 42 year
old car. The problem is that it drives like a 42 year old car! Until Cindy and I
drove it on an out of town club event a few weeks ago, we forgot how spoiled
we were. The Sierra Mustang Club members may not see it again for a few
months following the “Restomod Moment” I had on the way to the event!
The trip I’m referring to was on Saturday, March 31st,
2007. It was to Reief’s Gas Station in Woodland, California
with a stop afterward at Ludy’s Main Street BBQ for lunch
and an afternoon visit to the Heidrick Agricultural Historic
Center and Truck Museum. Both are also in Woodland. On

car, great company and a great time waiting ahead. Little was
I to know that I was nearing the time that I was going to have
my “Restomod” moment and get a real appreciation of what a
Restomod Mustang is!
It happened as I got off the freeway and was coming up on
slower traffic as we took the off ramp to the cross town freeway
in South Sacramento. You don’t actually have to stop, but the
traffic slows considerably as it is reduced down to one lane. As
you slow, there is a sharp left hand bend that takes you onto
another freeway that crosses South Sacramento from Highway
99 to Interstate 5. Right there is where it happened. From about
65 miles an hour, I put my foot on the brake pedal and pushed...
Nothing happened! So I pushed a little harder! Still nothing
happened! By this time, the traffic in front of me was coming up
fast... really fast! So I pushed the brake pedal as hard as I could
and gripped the steering wheel. Thankfully, the Mustang started
to slow down! And then it hit me. 4 wheel drum brakes! The
Mustang I was driving had the stock 4 wheel drum brakes on it
and not the 4 wheel disc brakes that I was used to that our 1965
Black Restomod Mustang had! Whew! That was close! But My
Restomod moment wasn’t over yet. There was more to come...
Mine and Cindy’s 1965 Black Restomod Mustang Coupe that we’ve had for
over 26 years. It’s a pleasure to drive on short or long trips with it’s EFI 5.0L
engine and T-5 5-speed transmission. It also has cruise control, air conditioning, an updated suspension system, comfortable highback seats, a great 10
disc CD stereo system and 4-wheel disc brakes that actually STOP! The car
when you want them to! All that and the classic lines of the 1965 Mustang.
It’s what “Restomod” is all about
Remember I told you about a sharp left hand bend that takes
you onto the other freeway? Well, by the time I got the brake
thing under control, we were in that bend going the same speed
as the rest of the traffic. I turned the steering wheel, the big stock
steering wheel, to the left and guess what... It was like nothing
happened! So I turned it a little further! The Mustang started to
lean, but the turning was still inadequate for the speed we were
traveling! Again I gripped the steering wheel and turned it way
to the left! The little Mustang leaned further to the right and
finally turned, squealing the tires a little bit as we rounded the
turn! Ahh. At last! I’m going straight again with the cars in front
of me getting smaller! Life is good!
could answer, she added, “Will you please slow down? You’re
not on the race track, you know!” Now, you’ve got to put this all
into perspective. This entire incident, this "Restomod Moment"
as I call it, took all of about 10 seconds to unfold. But it made me
appreciate how much difference there is in driving a stock 42 year
old Mustang and a 42 year old Mustang that has been improved
with 4 wheel disc brakes and a newer suspension system like our
1965 Black Restomod Mustang Coupe has on it!
Donny Deutsch, Chairman of Deutsch Inc., made the following comment on the History Channel’s television program Our
Generation: The Ford Mustang that was aired last November.
Although edited and somewhat choppy, he said, “Recently, I
went to buy an old muscle car. The irony of it, I got in it, this
is so cool. And then I took it for a test drive. And I said, I can’t
buy this. This is uncomfortable, it doesn’t have air conditioning, it didn’t go. So we want to be wrapped in the pillow that we
wrapped ourselves in. It was just kind of an interesting moment
I felt, about wanting to go back, wanting to feel that. No. But I
like my creature comforts. Maybe I’ll just look at it. I’ll drive a
Mercedes.” Donny is a prime example of a Restomod lover. But
maybe he doesn’t know it yet. Maybe he should drive a Restomod
Mustang that is equipped with air conditioning, an EFI engine
and an AOD transmission. Or, a T-5 5-speed if he wants to shift
gears. Maybe then he would find times to leave the Mercedes
parked and enjoy driving a good ol’ American musclecar! When
you remove the parts of the car that make it ride, drive and handle
like a 42 year old car, and update the brakes, suspension and add
the modern conveniences that are available on newer cars, you
have a 42 year old car that runs, drives and is comfortable like
a more modern car. You've restored it and modernize it. You've
built a Restomod!
I have to tell you, for the rest of mine and Cindy’s outing, I
planned in my head all of the changes I was going to make to
our little 1965 Springtime Yellow Mustang convertible! A
complete Stainless Steel Brake Corporation 4 wheel disc
brake conversion kit, a full Grab-A-Trak suspension system
with a 1” sway bar, 620 front coil springs and 5 leaf rear leaf
springs to start. And oh yeah, a T-5 5-speed transmission.
That should do for starters. And then it hit me. If I improved
our little 1965 Springtime Yellow Mustang convertible and
treated it to a complete Restomod suspension system and
disc brake make over, the next time I drove it, it wouldn’t
make me appreciate my Restomod Mustangs the way that it
does today! It would drive just as good as one of them! So I
decided not to do anything to it at all except to drive it and
enjoy it! And to understand that it will always stop and drive
like a 42 year old Mustang. It’s strange, but I was talking
to one of my friends, Mike Epperson, about this experience
before I wrote this article. When I got to the part about not
changing anything on the convertible so I would appreciate
my Restomods after driving it, he laughed and said that he
knew exactly what I meant and that he felt exactly the same
way. In fact, he said he and his wife, Joyce, had a Mustang
that they were leaving stock for the exact same reason. And
guess what. It’s a 1965 Mustang convertible as well!
If I had been by myself, that would have been the end of it. But
remember, my wonderful wife Cindy was sitting in the passenger
seat next toONLINE!
