Message from the Commodore
Due to publishing
deadlines, I’m writing
this just a week into
my year, but it has been
a busy one!
As is tradition,
we held our Annual
Meeting and Election
the first Wednesday of
December. I would like
to congratulate Brad Kimmel for being elected Rear
Commodore. Joining us as Governors are Gordy
Smith and Ryan Farrell. Our new member of the
Control Committee is Tom Ritter. Congratulations
to all of you. I look forward to working with
you this year. I would also like to take the time
to recognize Chris Clark, Chuck Stormes, John
Rummel and Paul Ragheb for being candidates
this year. I appreciate your willingness to give your
time to our Club.
I would also like to congratulate Commodore
Bruce Burton, who has taken the helm as President
of US Sailing. Bruce is the third Bayview Member
to fill this role. Rumor has it, the only other Club
to have ever had three US Sailing Presidents from
among the membership is New York Yacht Club.
Not bad for our little club on the river! We have
two other members joining Bruce at the national
level. Steve Freitas will be serving as the National
Treasurer and Commodore Brian Geraghty
will be serving on the Offshore Committee..
Congratulations to all three of you!
Back to local club news: Thanksgiving
Weekend we took delivery of the Centennial Book
and started distributing them to the membership.
This book was really well received. Nice work
by Commodore Everingham and Commodore
Geraghty and all those who contributed.
The following Saturday we had our annual
Children’s Christmas Party. It was a well-attended
event with face painting, trains, slot cars, cookie
and stocking decorating. The Coast Guard was
nice enough to bring Santa in for pictures. The
train set up provided by Nick DeGrazia and his
wife Sandra is always a hit. Nick and his helpers
(Mathew DeClercq, Steve Falcone, Ray and Winnie
Adams) always do a great job. Other volunteers
include Amber Kimmel with stocking decorating,
Anne Burke and Carolyn Falcone with cookie
decorating and of course Santa! Thank you all for
your help in making this a great event. It is a great
day seeing the future of Bayview running around
the Club.
Then we had the Annual Employee Christmas
Party. This has come to be one of my favorite
evenings at the Club each year. It is a lot of fun
to get to spend time with our staff on a personal
level. We had a drawing for Christmas presents,
karaoke, great food served up by Chef Andra’
and another visit by Santa. Thanks to Marilyn and
Jarvis for putting it all together. This event could
not happen without them and all of the generous
donations by our members.
Right now is the time that all the planning
happens for the upcoming sailing season. A few
key chairs this year are Kyle Burleson (Mackinac),
Cindy Ross (BOD), Lynn Kotwicki (Membership),
Linda Rossell (Entertainment) and Linda Rosiek
(D Cup). We are always looking for volunteers for
these committees. If you have an interest in helping
out with any of them, please get in contact with
them and let them know. If there is another area of
the Club that peaks your interest, contact me and I
will get you in touch with the right person.
I’m looking forward to meeting with the new
Board. It is time for us to roll up our sleeves and
go to work. We realize that last year’s financials
did not turn out the best and we are dedicated to
working hard to improve the Clubs performance
without jeopardizing the members’ experience.
Aaron and our new Controller, Joy, have already
been hard at work making changes that will benefit
us in the long run.

From the Board Room
This year’s financial results were not what
anyone hoped, planned or worked for. Despite
this, the Board worked very hard on behalf of
the membership and there were many positive
things that happened this year.
A three-year agreement with the
control committee to fund maintenance.
This is important as it is the first time we as a
club have had the ability to plan for our club
improvements over more than a 9-month time
period. It is virtually impossible to plan, quote
and execute on any significant project given the
structure we had. This working relationship
with the control committee is critical to the
health of our club. We should expect to see
continued improvement of the house and
grounds over the next two years.
Maintenance, just look around at the
club and look at all the improvements.
The Mackinac Room ceiling and floor, new
carpeting upstairs and new sails for our
Ultimate 20 fleet are just three of the more
visible examples. Other less glamorous
improvements include garbage area cleanup
and new fencing, a major rat eradication
project in the triangle, new windows for
the John Barbour Sailing Center, new road
sign, and a significantly improved front gate
mechanism. As part of the improvement of
the front gate we have also made a major
improvement to our video cameras and their
coverage. Make sure you don’t hit the gate! We
will have you on video!
The Strategic Planning Process. While
still early in the implementation phase, we do
have a plan that will change the way the club
moves forward. More than 12 members of
all ages and membership levels got together
weekly for approximately three months. With
the coaching of Jack Sullivan along with the
benchmarking from other clubs we created a
plan that fits Bayview Yacht Club. The purpose of
the strategic plan is to help us plan for the long
term and also guide our shorter term actions in
a consistent manner that supports the needs of
Bayview, our members and the sport of sailing.
New Events. As everyone knows who
comes to the club or reads their email Aaron
and his amazing staff are constantly changing
things up at the club in an effort to make the club
appealing and high value to all our members
and their families. Family involvement is critical
to the health of Bayview as it is to all private
clubs. Some of the new activities and events that
were tried this year were successes and some
did not do as well, the important thing is to try.
The Board has no agenda other than doing
our best to support the club we love. We are
volunteers taking time out of our busy work and
family schedules to give back to Bayview and its
membership.
The Board of Governors believes it
is important to keep timely and pertinent
communication with everyone and we hope
everyone is finding these short monthly
summaries useful and informative.

2016 OLD GOATS

The new Board of Governors, accompanied by the Flag Officers, had their first meeting, along
with the traditional photo shoot.
Com. Kuspa made his procedural appointments and oriented new Board members to some of
the BOG procedures and policies, urging openness and transparency for the membership except
for confidential member, personnel and legal issues.
As would be expected, the Club’s financials dominated Board discussion. A number of onetime expenditures during 2015 have lowered the Club’s cash reserves, presenting some serious
issues. The membership will be hearing more about this in the coming weeks, likely by the time
this is published.
Our new Comptroller, Joy Golicz, gave an impressive presentation. She described new and
enhanced accounting procedures, shared her ideas for improvement, and described some of the
inherent challenges in our accounting systems.
Three of the other prime points discussed during the meeting were the kitchen enhancements,
new menu and the overall dining room. With the new menu and better controls in the kitchen, we
are expecting a more profitable restaurant and bar.
