RANDY “GRIZZ” COMENSKY
DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN AND CAMPING SERVICES
Randy has been directing the J’s Summer Day Camp since 2009. He has over 25 years of
resident and day camping experience. As the Director of Camp Sabra, Camp Lakeland and
the J Camps, Randy has the hands-on experience needed to provide J Camps with
exceptional, quality programming that our parents expect. Randy was also a participant
in the AVI CHAI/Mandel Lekhu Lakhem Senior Fellowship program for JCC Resident Camp
Directors, as well as a graduate of the Jewish Experiential Leadership Institute (JELI)
fellowship for JCC management staff.

CHILDREN AND CAMPING ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT
Kathy has been working in the J Camps office since the 2009 camp season. She is an LSU
graduate and enjoys when the Tigers lead the SEC. Prior to joining the J, Kathy worked in
public education and feels that this experience helps to make the J Camps office a warm
and inviting place. Whether she is fixing a scraped knee, or helping a child find their
lunchbox, Kathy is the friendly face of our J Camps. If you ask Kathy why she enjoys what
she does, she will tell you “I like interacting with the families and making the J Camps
office a welcoming environment for everyone.”

Bami Tots is an entry level program for our youngest campers. Bami
Tots is designed to provide social interaction with other children,
development of language skills, music and movement activities,
exploration of art materials, gymnastics, and water play. It is a fun
and active program for our toddler campers, filled with messy and
wet activities that are perfect for this age group.
Camp Bami offers parents the comfort of a summer camp in a
dedicated early childhood environment. Camp Bami’s specialties
include Jewish programming, music, and arts and crafts. Daily
instructional swim will be led by American Red Cross Water Safety
Instructors. Special events and dress-up days are also a fun part
of our summer!

ENTERING KINDERGARTEN IN SEPT 2015

Kinder Camp is for children entering Kindergarten in the fall and
provides a nurturing environment which bridges preschool to
Kindergarten. Experienced staff and a small counselor-to-camper
ratio assist in enhancing each child’s personal experience. Kinder
Camp promotes group settings where children can make friendships
to last well beyond the summer. Daily instructional and recreational
swim will be led by American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors and
lifeguards.

FOR CAMPS AT THE JOE WEINGARTEN & MERFISH TEEN CENTER:
AM Care includes supervision of age-appropriate activities, games,
crafts and so much more. PM Care offers a supervised place where
campers can have group activities, crafts, gymnastics, gym time and a
kosher snack time. AM and PM Care provides a different environment
for Kinder Campers that is separate from 1–5 graders.

BONIUK FAMILY INDOOR TENNIS CENTER
This camp will electrify campers with technique, quality, active
games, superior state-of-the-art equipment, and fun! Gymnastics
campers will learn gymnastics from USA Gymnastics Certified
Coaches and develop socially with friends. Daily recreational swim
and special Friday field trips are all part of the Gymnastics Camp
experience!
Tennis campers will learn tennis from United States Professional
Tennis Association (USPTA) Certified Tennis Professionals in the J’s
indoor air-conditioned courts. Certified Tennis Professionals allows
the J to offer a top-notch camping experience. Experienced players
will have outdoor playing opportunities during the morning hours
ONLY. Campers have daily recreational swim.

MERFISH TEEN CENTER
Camp Kaleidoscope is the place to be this summer! Kaleidoscope
campers have so much fun with daily programs including sports,
GAGA, tennis, Judaic, arts & crafts, Chugim (elective activities),
music, and so much more. Campers also enjoy daily instructional
and recreational swim led by American Red Cross Water Safety
Instructors and lifeguards. Kaleidoscope is also a place where children can enjoy being with friends and are encouraged to make some
new ones. Our fun-filled, experienced and knowledgeable staff help
make Kaleidoscope a popular choice for Day Camps in the Houston
community. Kaleidoscope is an environment where campers can
express themselves in a traditional day camp setting. Campers will
have exclusive use of the Merfish facility that includes two covered
sports courts, swimming pool, sports field, tennis courts and
air-conditioned camp rooms.
WITS or Writers In The Schools (WITS) is a well-rounded program of
reading, dictation, journaling, and independent writing that helps
young children discover what it means to be a real writer. Drama and
art also extend their understanding of the written word. Basic skills
(such as letter formation and spelling) are addressed in context. As
children explore the role of the author, they create short stories and
poems for the class anthology. This specialized camp combines a
morning of WITS with an afternoon of camp activities. There is a
morning only (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM) option available also. Maximum of
15 campers.

This two-week dance camp is for beginning campers with or without
dance experience. Included in the curriculum is ballet, jazz, kids
yoga, modern, hip hop and dances from around the world. Activities
are age appropriate and include recreational swimming, art, music
and a Shabbat celebration each Friday. There will be a demonstration for parents at the end of the camp session. Min 10/Max 15

Jr. Tennis campers will learn tennis from United States Professional
Tennis Association (USPTA) Certified Tennis Professionals in the J’s
indoor air-conditioned courts. All Jr. Tennis campers will start the day
in the J and relocate to the Tennis Center for the rest of the morning.
Each morning tennis professionals will coach campers with the USTA
QuickStart Program, as well as structured tennis games and programs to strengthen hand-eye and overall coordination. Campers
will then be shuttled (via bus) to the Merfish Teen Center where they
will have lunch and join their peers in Camp Kaleidoscope activities.
Counselors will be with junior campers the entire day. Afternoon activities will include instructional and recreational swim led by Red
Cross certified lifeguards and water safety instructors in addition to
art, sports, gaga, music and so much more.

CIRCUS OF THE KIDS CAMP
The J is proud to once again host the Circus of the Kids Camp. Circus
of the Kids travels around the country, teaching circus arts to children
of all ages. It is the only program of its kind in the United States, and
the J is proud to be the only camp in Texas where kids can participate.
Maximum of 75 campers. Circus of the Kids will require the following:

Happy Days Camp is a week of exciting daily field trips around Houston
and offers activities including recreational swim, arts & crafts, music,
sports and so much more. Happy Days is a well-supervised camp with
experienced staff, allowing for great social interaction and a perfect
way to begin the camp season. Events include daily field trips such as
Houston Zoo, bowling, Museum of Natural Science and ice skating.

CAMP S.T.E.M.
MAD SCIENCE CAMP
J Camps have partnered with Camp Einstein to offer a camp consisting
of four main components: Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math (S.T.E.M.) Campers will enjoy hands-on projects such as building
roller coasters or hovercrafts and learning about solar power as well
as building race cars. They will explore the basics of chemical reactions with projects like slime making and crystallization as well as
building a rocket to shoot into the sky. Just when our campers think
that is all, we will then put on detective hats and become CSI investigators and explore topics in forensic investigation, evidence collection
and techniques and problem solving. This camp is perfect for campers who enjoy building, creating and seeing how things work! Max 20
The J has once again partnered with Mad Science of Houston to form
an incredible J Camps experience. Each week is a different theme
facilitated by the Mad Science professionally trained science instructor.

HOW DOES IT WORK
Take an in-depth look at the science behind everyday machines and
cool science in this camp about engineering. We’ll see how your Jr.

architects by building a geodesic dome that we’ll even get a chance

ISTI BASKETBALL CAMP
The Mike Henshaw Soccer Camp coaches will teach
techniques in all aspects of soccer, including goaltending. Mike’s focus has been to teach young people soccer skills with
enjoyment as an important part of learning. Mike always tries to
keep fun, development and winning in proper order with teamwork
and cooperation among teammates as the most important. Mike has
been the Rice Owls Men’s Club Soccer coach since 1981 and has built
a successful program that has stressed character as the key to success
on and off the field. This camp will take place at the J.
Basketball coaches from the International Sports
Training Institute (ISTI) will be on hand during this
week to help campers with shooting, dribbling, passing and the
layup. ISTI will begin the week with an evaluation of each player,
continue the week with skill-building drills and games while completing
the week with a final basketball assessment highlighting each
element of the game. This program will take place at the J.

Campers will travel to Rice University and take part in
the Rice Baseball Camp for the morning and return
to the J for swimming in the afternoon. The continued success of the
Rice Baseball Camps may be largely attributed to the staff’s commitment
to the individual player. Low camper/coach ratios are maintained,
ensuring each camper receives quality instruction to maximize
development. The camps are under the direction of Rice Baseball
Coach Wayne Graham and the Rice Baseball staff. Instructors may
include current and former Owl players and area high school coaches.
On Friday of these weeks, Baseball Camp will have a field trip to
Advantage Sports. Transportation included. Campers need to bring a
glove, bat hat, cleats (or tennis shoes) and helmet. NOTE: the bus for

art creations that are one-of-a-kind. Each week of camp incorporates a specific theme, as indicated below.
Spend the week at the J learning hip hop and jazz dance. Explore the
latest moves in music videos to the foundations of classical jazz. Art

This camp will electrify campers with technique, quality, active
games, superior state-of-the-art equipment, and fun! Campers will
learn gymnastics from professional gymnastic staff and be able to
exercise and develop socially. Daily recreational swim and special
Friday field trips are all part of the Gymnastics Camp experience!
Tennis Camp will teach strokes, service game as well as overall coordination. The combination of our state-of-the-art indoor tennis center
and United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA). Certified
Tennis Professionals allows the J to offer a top-notch camping experience. Experienced players will have outdoor playing opportunities

TEEN THEATER CAMP
Tweens will have the opportunity to rehearse and perform in the
production of The Audition. It is a modern play about a new theater
teacher bringing a production of A Chorus Line to their high school.
Though the hopefuls range from shy to outrageous, and from divalike to determined, everyone has a chance to step into the
spotlight. The Audition is a hilarious and heartbreaking look at the
madness of auditioning and the actors who brave the process for
that perfect part. Campers will delve into the core elements of
acting through scene and character study, as well as monologue
work. The Director of the JCCS and Performing Arts Camp, Eva De La
Cruz, will direct this production. This one-week camp will culminate

updated and exciting Leader in Training (LIT) Program has all the
things you loved best about being a camper while building a foundation
as a counselor for the future. This is a unique opportunity to develop,
practice and hone your leadership skills through hands-on activities
and discussions about types of leadership, communication and
team-building. At the end of the week you will leave with a recommendation for your next job (whether it is with us, another camp, or
an entirely different kind of work), a certificate of completion (looks
great on your college application), and 35 community service hours!

INSTRUCTIONAL SWIM
The J is committed to providing all campers from age 3 all the way up
to 2nd grade with an exceptional instructional swim experience. Our
aquatics program is based on the principles and methods established by the American Red Cross, and all instructors are certified by
the American Red Cross. Swimmers are grouped by age and ability
and learn in an age-appropriate environment.
RED CROSS COURSE INFORMATION
LEVEL 3: STROKE DEVELOPMENT
This level builds on the primary skills learned in level 2 and teaches
coordination of the front and back crawl.
LEVEL 4: STROKE IMPROVEMENT
This level is focused on developing confidence in the strokes
learned thus far. Breaststroke is introduced and endurance is
increased.
LEVEL 5: STROKE REFINEMENT
The American Red Cross Program is progressive; each skill builds on
the skills mastered in the previous levels. To ensure quality programming, it is necessary to successfully complete each level in the progression. Essential swim and safety skills are taught at each level.
Skipping or omitting levels may result in your child missing vital skills.
The following is a description of each level in the progression.
This level focuses on coordination and refinement of key strokes.
Endurance is also increased.
LEVEL 1: WATER EXPLORATION

The objective of this level is to help students feel comfortable in
the water. Elementary skills are taught and students will build skills
as they progress.
LEVEL 6: SKILL PROFICIENCY
The objective of this level is to polish strokes, allowing students to
swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness.
LEVEL 2: FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS
The objective of this level is to give students success with fundamental skills. This level marks the beginning of true locomotive skills.

GENERAL INFORMATION
SUMMER CAMP
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Financial assistance is available on a limited basis for Summer
Day Camp. We will work with families individually to process all
financial aid requests for 2015 Summer Day Camp. The procedure
for applying for financial assistance includes the following:
• Enroll your child(ren) into the desired program(s) and pay the required deposits to secure space. Your membership account must remain current throughout the camp period.
•
Financial assistance is not available for the following contract camps: Aquatics, Baseball, Basketball, Cooking, Circus of the Kids, Comic Creations, Detective, Equestrian, Golf, Lego Fundamentals, Lego Challenge, Mad Science, Soccer, STEM, WITS, and World of Wizards.
•
Apply online at https://online.factsmgt.com/aid beginning Monday, February 2, 2015. Qualified applicants who have submitted a complete application, including supporting documents, will receive a confirmation letter outlining financial terms.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
• Payment arrangements must be finalized prior to program participation. Contact Betty Tonnessen at 713.729.3200 ext. 3217 or [email protected] with any questions.
• The deadline to apply for financial assistance is Monday, March 8, 2015.
• A deposit is required for each session of camp. The deposit is applied to your total camp fees and is non-refundable.
• Weekly camps will have a $50 per week deposit.
• Session camps will have a $100 per session deposit.
•
When you register for camp, you will be asked to make payment arrangements for your total camp fees. Payment arrangement options include: cash, check or credit card payment in full, payment through Electronic Fund Transfers (EFTs) or a credit card deposit and a final credit card payment on April 24, 2014 for balance owed. Online payment arrangements include: credit card payment in full or a credit card deposit and a final credit card payment on April 24, 2015 for balance owed.
• EFT drafts may begin as early as March 16, and will be drafted the 16th of each month thereafter and completed by July 16.
• EFT forms require a non-refundable deposit, which will be deducted from the total camp costs to compute the EFT balance.
CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
TRANSPORTATION
J Camps programs strive to accommodate children with special
needs who are ready for a group camp experience. Every child’s
individual needs are assessed or reviewed annually to provide a successful match between the camper and the program.
Please understand that even though we try to accommodate all
children, J Camps may not be the right fit for every child.

Our transportation companies have exceptional maintenance
and driver records. Buses do not have seat belts. Daily transportation is provided from the West Houston JCC Herzstein Building.
The bus departs from the West Houston J at 8:10 AM and returns
to West Houston at 4:00 PM. Minimum registrations for buses
must be met by April 27, 2015. Bus times may be subject to change.

Checks for full camp payment, in the proper amount must

PAYMENT AND REFUND POLICY
Applications must be accompanied by payment. Applications
submitted with expired memberships or accounts which have
outstanding balances for membership dues or program
tuition cannot be processed.
For registrations submitted prior to April 30, 2015:
Applications will require payment in full by cash, check, or credit
card (Visa/Master Card/Discover/American Express). No refunds
will be granted after the beginning of the camp session registered. Deposit amounts will not be refunded.
If a member drops a camp and adds another at a higher price,
payment for the difference will be due at the time of registration
per above policy.
If a member drops a camp and adds another at a lower price,
refund for the difference will be processed per above policy, if
the member account is in good standing and there is no plan to
register for additional camps.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
• Membership is required to participate in all camp programs.
• Requests for camper placements with friends will be honored as space and registration allow.
• 30+ hours of staff training is conducted prior to camp. Staff is
committed to providing a fun and memorable camp experience.
• All campers are required to have medical insurance. Parents are responsible for all medical costs.
• Camper Health Forms (required by the City Health Department)
will be distributed at registration. These forms must be received by the Day Camp Office by May 15, 2015.
• Children will not be released from the camp grounds or buildings to anyone other than custodial parents or those designated in writing.
•
Though no enrollment numbers are published for minimum
required, the J reserves the right to cancel any program
if the actual number enrolled is not sufficient to absorb
costs and operate a quality program.

camp and member pricing on all Evelyn Rubenstein JCC programs, Friday, May 15, 2015 through Tuesday, September 1, 2015.
CARPOOL DROP OFF AND PICK UP
Morning carpool drop off is between 8:45-9:00AM while afternoon carpool pick up is between 3:20-3:40 PM. The West Houston
JCC bus departs at 8:10 AM sharp and will return at 4:10 PM
(depending on traffic).
If parents need to come into buildings for any reason, please
park cars in a marked parking space and DO NOT BLOCK driving
lanes or carpool loop. Children arriving after 9:00 AM MUST be
accompanied by a parent to the location of their camp program.
Anyone picking up campers will need a carpool sign for their car.
When driving to the front of the car pool line, make sure it is visible, so camp staff can see it. These will be sent to all registered
parents/guardians prior to the summer. Please take note as to
where to drop off or pick up your child(ren).
Weingarten Building (Kinder Camp and Specialty Camps)
• Pick up and drop off: Use the second Atwell entrance from South Braeswood and use the front of the building,
inside the bus loop.
Tennis Center (Tennis Camps only)
• Pick up and drop off at the Tennis Center.
Merfish Teen Center (Camp Kaleidoscope and WITS)
• Pick up and drop off: Merfish Teen Center front door of main entrance.

ROAMERS
Roamers are campers who have permission from their parents/
guardians to be released when camp ends. Parents will need
to get a Roamer Permission Slip, sign and return it to the Tween
Camp Director, Jamie Aaron. Roamers need to at least be
entering 6th grade in September 2015.
TENNIS MEMBERSHIP provides all the benefits of our Health,
Sports & Fitness Membership, plus access to our outdoor tennis
courts, indoor tennis center, tennis leagues, clinics and lessons.
