The Artist in the Garden exhibition, curated by our
own Kirsten M. Jensen, Senior Curator of Exhibitions,
has been drawing a crowd. Our youth classes, adult
tours, and visitors waiting for a harbinger of spring,
have responded to the dynamic variety Kirsten has
brought together. These include our well-known
stars such as Rae Sloan Bredin, Daniel Garber, and
Mary Elizabeth Price in context with contemporary
interpretations by Elizabeth Osborne, Jennifer
Bartlett, Mavis Smith, and Peter Paone. Works from
the permanent collection, which have not been on
view for long periods of time are complemented by
important loans from area collectors and institutions making for a rich installation of
fresh comparisons.
Osborne will be the focus of a solo exhibition, also curated by Kirsten that opens in
the Beans Gallery in July. Veils of Color: Juxtapositions and Recent Work by Elizabeth
Osborne examines the full evolution of figurative, abstraction, and vibrant color
theory employed by this painter over the course of her long and distinguished career.
The Museum’s Board of Trustees and Staff have been involved in crafting our
Strategic Plan for the past several months and we look forward to presenting a
synopsis of our goals to you early this summer. A key milestone in this process is the
Museum’s 30th Anniversary, which we celebrate in 2018. In addition, the Museum is
undergoing a self-study for reaccreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, the
governing body of our field. This important distinction, first achieved by the Museum
in 2001, indicates we are an extraordinary operation whose standards are consistently
high. We submit our report on July 1, 2015 for the Accreditation Commissioner’s
review. We will then have a site visit by two professionals from comparable museums
who will review all aspects of our facility, staff, board, and exhibitions and programs.
The Michener partnered with the Mercer Museum and the Bucks County Bar
Association to document and exhibit the extraordinary lineage of judicial portraits
that were housed in the Ceremonial Courtroom of the Courthouse. In January
we paid homage to this judicial legacy with a grand celebration and month-long
installation. The Bar Association received a County Bar Recognition Award from the
Pennsylvania Bar Association for this project. Many people contributed to this effort
and we are proud to be a participant in the project with our colleagues.
We congratulate our Chairman Emeritus, Herman Silverman, for a milestone 2015.
He turned 95 in January and was recognized for his leadership in business, culture,
and academia with the Helen and Kenneth Gemmill Distinguished Philanthropy and
Service Award and an Honorary Doctorate Degree, both from our neighbor, Delaware
Valley University.
As a result of our revitalized façade landscaping and elegant and powerful new
lighting scheme, the Museum’s prison walls and interior entrance courtyard are a
beacon for the community. We will celebrate the generous contributions that made
this possible in June and appreciate this support.
Welcome to a full and festive summer at the Michener!

Molten steel, billowing smoke, soot-covered miners, and the jagged geometry of
mills and factories covering vast tracts of land—these are not the usual subjects for
artists. But as seen on the canvases in Iron and Coal, Petroleum and Steel: Industrial
Art from the Steidle Collection, they can be transformed into objects of sublime
beauty. The exhibition is drawn from the Steidle Collection at the Earth and Mineral
Sciences Museum & Art Gallery at The Pennsylvania State University. Edward Steidle,

role of mineral industries in Pennsylvania. The bulk of the collection was compiled
during the Great Depression—a time when Americans needed reassurance about
their country’s economic stability. Rather than turn a critical eye toward Pennsylvania’s
industry, most of the paintings in the exhibition instead celebrate the state’s industrial
power and its proud workers, who rise from the canvas-like modern heroes, draped
in the tools of their trade.

As America became an industrial power
in the early 20th century, artists began
to turn their eyes away from bucolic
landscapes to the manifestations of the
nation’s industrial progress—the icons
of the Machine Age – factories, bustling
waterfronts and soaring skyscrapers. In
this lecture, Dr. Jensen will explore the
sublime drama of the industrial landscape
in American art, from the beginning of
the 20th century to World War II.

While there are a few familiar names in the exhibition, such as Aaron Gorson and

Experience the rich jazz tradition of Pennsylvania while discovering the music that arose from some of the most significant
neighborhood jazz clubs in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh from the
1930s through the 1960s. Musicians came to jam, musical mentorships were established, and up-and-coming greats like Billy
Strayhorn and John Coltrane got their starts. Jazz clubs became
venues for the intersection of white and black communities and
the collapsing of social boundaries. The presentation concludes
with an examination of the contemporary jazz scene and a look
at artists to watch in the future.
This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities
Council supported in part by National Endowment for the
Humanities.

The Artist
in the Garden
Through August 9, 2015, Putman | Smith Gallery
Curated by Kirsten M. Jensen, Ph.D.,
Senior Curator of Exhibitions
This exhibition explores the relationship between artists and
the garden landscape—frequently gardens of their own, but
occasionally the mythological, magical, or intimate realms of
their imagination. Divided into three thematic sections, “The
Back Yard,” “The Mythic Garden,” and “Intimate Spaces/
Private Worlds,” the installation explores artists’ responses
to social, environmental, and cultural changes affecting the
natural world through the 20th century and into the 21st.
The Artist in the Garden is generously funded by Bob and
Joyce Byers.

Juxtapositions and Recent Work by Elizabeth Osborne
July 25 – November 15, 2015
Fred Beans Gallery
Curated by Kirsten M. Jensen, Ph.D.,
Senior Curator of Exhibitions
Osborne began her
career with a focus on
still life, interiors, and
figural subjects, but in
the 1970s, she moved
on to bold, colordrenched, landscapes,
and eventually
to abstractions
that explore color
spectrums. The twentyfour paintings in the
exhibition explore the
direction Osborne’s
work has taken since
her 2009 retrospective
Elizabeth Osborne (b. 1936), Cathedral, 2013,
at the Pennsylvania
oil on canvas, 60 x 48 in. Locks Gallery
Academy of the Fine
Arts (PAFA)—six incredibly productive years. Upon her
retirement from teaching at PAFA in 2011, Osborne began to
focus more intensely on color and abstraction. More recently
still, she has reinvigorated her interest in realism, combining
color field with the figure to create deeply evocative and
haunting portraits that recall some of her earliest canvases,
while at the same time pushing beyond them into newer
territory. What they reveal is a subtle pas de deux between
abstraction and realism, a duet that is both revealed and
concealed by veils of color that wash across every canvas.
The exhibition will highlight some of Osborne’s most recent
paintings—many of which have not been seen outside of
her studio—and explore them through juxtapositions with
older work.
Veils of Color: Juxtapositions and Recent Work

Charles Ermentrout, Dr. Janice T. Gordon, and

Veils of Color explores of the arc of Elizabeth Osborne’s nearly
six-decade painting career. Osborne is a prolific Philadelphiabased artist, whose work constantly shifts between
abstraction and realism, expanding our understanding
of these distinctions. Her landscapes, figural works, and
colorfield canvases bridge formalist concerns with experiential
perceptions of nature, atmosphere and vistas.

This stunning installation of bronzes features work spanning
the artist’s long career, and is especially rich in portraiture.
The selection of sculptues represent the major achievements
of Rodin’s career. They include the powerful Burghers of
Calais, as well as works derived from his masterpiece, The
Gates of Hell. Others, such as The Night (Double Figure),
demonstrate his experimentation with assemblage. Also
featured are sculptures, such as Monumental Torso of
the Walking Man, which demonstrate his admiration for
Michelangelo, and Dance Movement D, which speaks to his
interest in creating an illusion of movement.

Wednesday, May 20, 1 – 3 pm
Chalfont, PA
Jonathan Hertzel has worked in diverse
media — wire, clay, concrete and wax,
but now he primarily uses bronze
and glass. He thinks of his sculpture
as figurative using the human form,
abstractly, as an expressive vehicle: “In that sense I’m very
much a descendent of Rodin whose animated human forms
took liberties with exaggerating anatomy for expressing the
narration of the human spirit.”

After a successful professional career with
Johnson & Johnson, Paul Grand began an
odyssey of making images that focus on
rich color, jarring contrasts, architectural
renderings, and the play of textures, light and
shadow on impervious surfaces. His approach
is painterly, referencing the color field
painters Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman,
and spaces are angular, structured, and
rhythmic. His travels to Morocco, India, and
especially Mexico are cultural explorations
which inform a compositional approach almost
devoid of human presence yet man-made
references populate the images in the form of
industrial objects, concrete, wiring, molded
tin, and peeling paint.

spontaneous, improvisational and collaborative, with a focus on the juxtaposition
of bodies moving in space and their interrelationships with sound, objects and

Sunday, September 20, 3 – 4:30 pm
Beverly Owens and Diane Goldsmith will perform a variety of compositions made
popular by Sarah Vaughan. Vaughan got her start by winning an amateur contest
at Harlem’s Apollo Theater and went on to become a vocalist with Earl Hines and
Billy Eckstine before forging her solo career. She won an Emmy, a Grammy, a star
on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the National Endowment for the Arts’ Jazz
Masters Fellowship. This event celebrates the photography exhibition of jazz
luminaries by Herman Leonard (see page 5).
Beverly Owens
Beverly Owens evokes the artistry of Sarah Vaughan. From her sultry swing to
her velvety soprano, she regards this program as a calling to make listeners aware

Founder and Artistic Director of Lyric Fest, is noted for her moving renditions of
melodies and for her intimate way with an audience. Before focusing her career on

Suzanne DuPlantis
64 M An Evening of Impressionist Song
Emily Eisen, soprano
Wednesday, July 29, 7 – 8:30 pm
An evening of song dedicated to the mutual admiration and inspiration between art
and music in the time of Impressionism. The program will introduce the evocative
world of French Impressionist song, anchored by the melodies of Claude Debussy
(Ariettes oubliées, Fêtes galantes pour Madame Vasnier). Eisen will explore the
influence of French Impressionism on American composers, including Charles
Griffes and Philadelphia’s own Samuel Barber. Originally performed in private homes
and intimate salons, these songs would have intermingled with the art, ideas, and
energy of the society around them. Presented amidst the Michener’s collection of
Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings, the program offers a unique experience of
hearing music alongside art of its time.
Emily Eisen
Eisen has performed with Center Stage Opera, Delaware Valley Opera Company,
Poor Richard’s Opera and Children’s Opera Box. She has been a soloist with Vox
Ama Deus and the Vox Renaissance Consort, and given recitals at the Woodmere
Art Museum and the Settlement Music School, where she was a member of the
Voice Faculty.

Volunteer Recognition
The James A. Michener Art Museum honored five outstanding volunteers at its
21st annual Ann Silverman Volunteer Recognition Award Ceremony on
Wednesday, April 22. The 2014 Ann Silverman award recipients are: Barbara and Dale Chellew for
Volunteers of the Year; Jean Burdick and Karen Liebman for Docents of the Year;
and Julia Feingold for Junior Volunteer of the Year. Jeffra Silverman Nandan,
daughter of the late Ann Silverman, presented the awards and with a special
tribute to each recipient.
Twenty-one additional volunteers were recognized for their hourly contribution
over the years, including Evelyn Doyle and David Aker with more than 3000
and 2500 cumulative hours respectively. In 2014, Michener volunteers gave
approximately 13,500 hours of their time, which translates to $304,425.
Volunteers, an integral part of the Museum and its mission, donate their time
in helping us preserve the cultural heritage of Bucks County and forging bonds
between the Museum and the community.
Congratulations to all Michener volunteers.
Trustee Emeritus
At the December 2014 meeting of
the Michener Art Museum Board of
Trustees, a proposal for a Trustee
Emeriti group was approved and four
distinguished long-time members of
the Board were presented for election. We are grateful to these individuals for
their passion and dedication in service
to the Museum and look forward to their
continued involvement through this
important designation. We honor the
memory of William Mandel who passed
away in February 2015 and congratulate
William Brenner, Nelson Pfundt, and Mira
Nakashima-Yarnall on their election as a
Trustee Emeritus.
Thank You Donors!
Thanks to the generosity of many
Michener donors, we take this
opportunity to acknowledge our three
major scholarship sources.
The Robert V. Nesi Education Award
was established in 2002 in memory of
Robert V. Nesi, son of Daniel and Polly
Nesi. In addition, Isaac Witkin’s Waif’s
Anchors (1986) was donated in memory
of Robert V. Nesi by his family in 2008.
The Michener Art Museum Volunteer
Scholarship for Art Education
Endowment was established in 2013,
through the generosity of Museum
volunteers. The Holly Berry Huynh
Memorial Scholarship Endowment was
also created in 2013. Holly was an active
and creative participant in the Museum’s
summer camp program from 20102012. Her life was tragically cut short
in November 2012, when she was nine
years old. Continued donations keep
Holly’s spirit alive in the Education Center
at the Museum. Poco’s Restaurant in
Doylestown recently contributed $7500
to The Holly Berry Huynh Memorial
Scholarship Endowment.
These scholarships help children of all
ages attend art classes and summer
camps free of charge. Funds from these
endowments underwrite tuition and art
supplies for numerous students. Families
of all scholarship recipients receive a
one-year household membership to the
Michener.
Art scholarships change lives and also
help the Michener continue to work with
underserved students in targeted schools
throughout Bucks County. Because of
these gifts, the Museum can continue to
offer scholarships and keep art education
alive in our diverse community.
Sincere thanks to all donors, and to the
Nesi and Berry Huynh families for their
generosity.

Why did you come to the Michener today?
Phoebe is a regular visitor to the Michener, often coming
in several times a week. Today she was volunteering
Phoebe
in the Museum’s archives, a position she has enjoyed
Strome
for three years. Her project for the last two years has
been supervised by the Michener’s Archivist and Volunteer Coordinator, Pamela
Sergey, and is focused on the William A. Smith archival holdings. Phoebe says that
she particularly looks forward to, “conversations with other volunteers and staff
members in the Archives and Library.”
Why did you become a member of the Michener?
Noting that she came to the Michener, “when it first opened and was immediately
intrigued,” Phoebe became and has remained a member because of both the
Museum’s focus on local art and its changing exhibitions. Some of her favorite past
exhibitions include Carved, Incised, Gilded, And Burnished: The Bucks County
Framemaking Tradition; Latin Jazz: La Combinacion Perfecta; Wild by Design: 200
Years of Innovation and Artistry in American Quilts and The Holy Experiment: Violet
Oakley Mural Studies to name just a few.
What are some of your favorite member benefits?
Like so many of our members, Phoebe greatly enjoys the Member Receptions,
remarking, “They are a fun place to meet people with similar interests.” She also
enjoys the many discounted and free lectures held throughout the year.
What is your favorite piece in the Michener’s collection?
Given her passion for local art and deep knowledge of the collection, it is hardly
surprising that Phoebe’s favorite work is Edward Redfield’s well-known 1923 painting, The Burning of Center Bridge. In fact, she admires the piece so much that she
plans to paint her foyer at home in the same dark blue found in the painting!
Members Reception for Rodin: The Human Experience—
Selections from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor
Collections, The Rodin Legacy, The Artist in the Garden
and Spirit of the Everyday: Prints by Herbert Pullinger
On Friday, February 27, the Michener held one of its
largest Member Receptions to date in honor of Rodin:
The Human Experience, Selections from the Iris and
B. Gerald Cantor Collection; The Rodin Legacy; The
Artist in the Garden and Spirit of the Everyday: Prints
by Herbert Pullinger. Over 500 members came to view
the four exciting exhibitions as well as socialize over
drinks and hors d’oeuvres created by Jeffrey A. Miller
Catering. Receiving invitations to Members Receptions
is a benefit all our Michener members enjoy. If you
were not able to join us for this special event, mark your
calendar for our next Members Reception in honor of
two upcoming exhibitions: Iron and Coal, Petroleum
and Steel: Industrial Art from the Steidle Collection
and Herman Leonard: Jazz Portraits on Friday,
July 10 from 6 – 7:30 pm.
As always, thank you for your continued support.
