Message: Never Forgotten - My son Eric and I just released our newest military themed song Never Forgotten. I
thought of our Medal of Honor winner Marvin Shields and our other MCB-11 team mates when we wrote this
song. Please have a listen and let others hear it. It is a sad but real tribute to our military serving in harm's way
and the families they leave behind. Freedom isn't Free - All gave some; some gave all. But, they are Never
Forgotten. Listen on my site or Eric's myspace ericgeibel. Warm regards, Bruce Geibel, MCB 11 Association

Message: History Tidbits. The New NMCB-11. The Navy Times of 20 July 2009, page 37, shows the 'Bees of
NMCB-11 are deployed around the world to the following locations as of July 9: Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas,
Spain, Romania, Ukraine, Djibouti, Ethopia, Comorus, Kuwait, and Afghanistan - ELEVEN different places for
ELEVEN. Isn't this ironic. To my knowledge, since the original 11th NCB was commissioned in 1943, this is
the most widespread deployment around the world of NMCB-11 in it illustrious history. Congratulations to the
new 'Bees of ELEVEN for spreading construction, peace and freedom in harm's way around the world. Seabees

Message: April 1944. History Tidbits. The living quarters for the 11th Naval Construction Battalion (WW II) in
April 1944 were Quonset Huts lined up row after row that housed about 20 men per hut. These were corrugated
metal huts developed by the Navy in Quonset Point, RI (hence, Quonset Huts), constructed within coconut palm
groves; it was necessary to be very careful where you were walking because of the danger from falling
coconuts. For your NMCB-11 'Bees who served in Vietnam, you didn't live in Quonset huts but you had to be
careful of coconut dropping from the palm trees, especially in Quang Tri in 1968. Guess that made it necessary
during WW II to wear battle helmets or hard hats in camp treking through the palm groves to the toilets or
shower facilities. Toilet facilities were primitive, a covered hut at the end of a dock built out over the waters
inside the reef. The showers were out in the open and there was usually a string of naked men walking back and
forth wearing only a towel. Such was life during World War Two deployments to the South Pacific. MCB-11

Message: The Vietnam Wall in Washington, DC. The names of many of my classmates and 15 of our NMCB11 Seabee brothers who died or were Killed in Action (KIA) during the Vietnam War are etched on this wall.
SW1 Charles D. Jones, USN, was killed in Vietnam in 1969 with another Seabee battalion after serving on my
Seabee Team 1109 in Thailand in 1967. I have seen his name on this wall. I recently had an unexpected email
from and met his son Michael Anderson who lives near Little Rock, Arkansas. We met in a local restaurant in
Jacksonville, AR, and I shared stories about his dad and I gave him pictures of his dad serving with me in
Thailand and Vietnam. He was just a young boy when his father died and I was able to fill in a lot of unknowns
and blanks in his life. That discussion began to bring some closure to my time serving in Southeast Asia in
Vietnam and Thailand in the mid-1960s. For those of you who knew SW1 Charles Jones and would like to
share your memories with his son, please contact me at my email address and I'll share his email address with
you. Thanks my brothers. Long live the Seabees and especially those we lost in action.

Message: I am looking for Divers that served in NMCBs, MCBs and NCBs (WWII) to provide some history
about what types of projects they did from WWII up until the formation of the Underwater Construction Teams
(UCT) in the early 1970's. It will be included in the Seabee Diver Association's (SDA) website (partially
complete, still under development)
Stories of any manner or project, from extensive or unusual to the routine (for example: setting piling templates
or the occasional undewater welding or underwater inspections); even the hassles of trying to keep your diver
quals up are wanted.
The SDA also wants to recognize these pioneers, the predecessors of the UCTs, for their contributions to
underwater construction.
These Divers can be Seabee Rating Divers or Fleet Rating Divers that were permanently assigned to a Battalion.
So if you were one or know one, please contact me.
Thanks in advance!

Message: 22 November 1944. History Tidbits. The 11th NCB arrived at Camp Parks, Shoemaker, Calif., after
an 18-day sea voyage across the Pacific. The officers and men, many who had been deployed overseas for two
years, began an extended R&R period with families and loved ones. Those who weren't separated or sent to
other units, prepared to return to the South Pacific. The battalion was replenished with Seabees and fleet rates,
and quickly brought back up to fighting strength. The 11th NCB completed their stand down for replenishment
and training and set sail for their second Pacific Theater deployment on 14 May 1945, this time for the
Philippines. Note: Camp Parks was commissioned on 19 January 1943 as the Construction Battalion
Replacement Depot (CBRD). It functioned as the home base for Seabees returning from the Pacific Theater of
Operations. Battalions returned there to the states a year or more (mostly more) of arduous wartime construction
in the Pacific Theater and were ready to stand down. Camp Parks, also known as "Fleet City," was
disestablished in 1946. MCB-11 Historian.

NMCB-11 completed their tour of duty at Cubi Point, Philippine Islands. They completed work on permanent
shore facilities, earthmoving operations, central building shops, operation and maintenance of utilities,
construction of a central pre-cast yard, steel shop, and block plant, and operation of the 30th NCR heavy

Message: 1 November 1942. History Tidbits. Noumea, New Caledonia. While a ship was being loaded with
ammuniction at Nickel Docks, an explosion occured causing considerable property damage, loss of life, and a
fire threatened to destroy the dock and docked ships. Another ship in port that day was the USS Cassiopeia. A
fire fighting team from the 11th Naval Construction Battalion arrived to contain and put out the fire. One of the
fire fighters was MM1 Alex Pantelis Rempelakis, USN, a native of Greece, from the 11th NCB. He immigrated
to America before the war and left his family behind him in Greece. His duty post was on Nickel Dock and the
force of the explosion injured him so severely he died the following day. He was the only know Seabee from
the 11th NCB to lose his life during World War II. His fellow Seabee, M1c John A. Alger of "A" Company,
exhibited so much daring and courage in running the fire hose into the fire that he was personally commended
by the Commanding General of the Island. Ten other Seabees from the 11th Battalion were also commended for
their heroic action in fighting the fire. MGen. Rush B. Lincoln, US Army, commended the 11th NCB for their
heroic services. See more of the history of the 11th Battalion heroics on pp. 49-50 on the MCB 11 History

Message: ;-) April 1944. History Tidbits. First of all, my thanks to Ron and Hunter for your comments on our
history and our history tidbits. We have a long and proud history, and I'm attempting to further everyone's
knowledge about it. Now, back to the history. 1944. The 11th NCB living quarters were Quonset Huts that
housed 20 men per hut. These were corrugated metal huts constructed within coconut palm groves; it was
necessary to be very careful where you were walking because of the danger from falling coconuts. For you
Vietnam Vets, the same could be said about falling coconuts in Nam, especially up in Quang Tri Province in
1968. WW II Toilet facilities were primitive, a covered hut at the end of a dock built out over the waters inside
the reef. Guess you didn't want to swim near the outhouse. To you Nam vets, guess you remember the 2- and 4holers with burnout barrels in Nam, whoo hoo! I don't at this point know who had it worse - WW II or Nam
vets. The showers in WW II were out in the open and there was usually a string of naked men walking back and
forth wearing only a towel. So there you have it, the naked truth about life in WW II in the South Pacific. MCB11 Historian.

the U.S. Naval Station, Adak, Territory of Alaska (before it was a state). They were not due to deploy until
August 1957. But, their plans were abruptly changed on 9th March when a 9.1 magnitude earthquake with over
200 aftershocks hit Andreanof Islands, Alaska. It damaged many structures at nearby NAS Adak. The 'Bees

Message: 5 March 1942. History Tidbits. Happy Birthday Seabees! Sixty-six years young. In order to contribute
to the morale and esprit de corps of the personnel recruited for duty in the construction battalions (the Seabees),
RADM Ben Moreell recommended to BuNav on 1 March 1942 that these units be allowed to have a distinctive
designation and to use distinctive insignia on their equipment (not uniforms) similar to that used by aircraft
squadrons. As a consequence, the designation "Seabees" derived from the initials denoting construction
battalions (CB's) was authorized. The request was approved and the formation of Seabees began in earnest on 5
March 1942. This date is the official birthday of the Navy's construction forces, here in after known simply as
the Seabees. Oooh Raaah! MCB-11 Historian.

little better when we heard the fog horn type sound from up above when the wrath of all those guns were
brought to bear on the enemy. He won the Distinguished Flying Cross with three Oak Leaf Clusters snd 16 air

Comment: History Tidbits. The 11th NCB was commissioned 28 June 1942.
Battalion was dubbed "Lucky Eleven." The "Lucky Eleven", as the painters tagged
the battalion in 1942, with a pair of dice showing as "11" thrown, became the
battalion's logo/insignia. The insignia was the original creation of Howard "H"
Briggs, Painter First Class, assigned to "A" Company. It is nice to see the "11" dice
return as NMCB-11's logo after an absence of some 39 years. Long live NMCB-11.

that MCB-11 flag unfurl and then see the new members pass in review. The reunion

the batallion is in great hands to carry on her tradition of being among the best of the

doesn't hurt, and has away of clearing the cobwebs, bring you back to reality. A few

was 6'6" or so. Well, now he's not. How time does change things.

Comment: This has been confirmed.
Because of the work load being requested of the Seabees, there is a request in the
FY08 budget to add another battalion. This battalion would be named NMCB 11, in
recognition of Marvin Shields, and stationed in Gulfport, MS.
If approved the earliest date this could happen is October 2007, the beginning of the
2008 budget period. There is a request that all those who had previously served in
MCB 11 be invited to the commissioning ceremony.
