Most Australians live
in cities and cling to
the coastal fringe,
yet our sense of
what an Australian
is – or should be – is
drawn from the vast
and varied inland
called the bush. But
what do we mean by ‘the bush’, and how has it
shaped us? At once magisterial in scope and alive
with telling, wry detail, The Bush lets us see our
landscape and its inhabitants afresh, examining
what we have made, what we have destroyed, and
what we have become in the process.

comes the next chapter
in Stephen Fry’s life.
Blazing brightly and
partying wildly as the 80s turned to the 90s,
AIDS became an epidemic and politics turned
really nasty, he was so busy, so distracted by the
high life, that he could hardly see the inevitable,
headlong tumble that must surely follow...
Containing raw, electric extracts from his diaries
of the time, More Fool Me is a brilliant, eloquent
account by a man driven to create and to entertain
- revealing a side to him he has long kept hidden.
What Days

Robert Dessaix
Hardback
RRP $ 29.99
One Sunday night,
Robert Dessaix
collapses in a gutter
in Darlinghurst. What
follows are weeks in
hospital, tubes and
cannulae puncturing his body, as he recovers from
the heart attack threatening daily to kill him. While
lying in the hospital bed, Robert chances upon
Philip Larkin’s poem ‘Days’. What, he muses,
have his days been for? What and who has he
loved – and why? His often surprisingly funny
recollections range over topics as eclectic as
intimacy, travel, spirituality, and childhood.

Anh Do & Jules Faber
Fantastic Worlds
Q&A with A.F. Harrold,
author of The Imaginary
Q: Tell us a bit about your new book
The Imaginary ?
A: The Imaginary tells the story of Rudger,
who’s the imaginary friend of Amanda, and
Amanda who’s the real friend of Rudger.
One day Amanda gets knocked down by a
car and Rudger is left on his own, which is
tricky since he’s imaginary. He has to find
someone to imagine him, and is helped in this
by a cat called Zinzan. There’s also a rather
unpleasant chap, called Mr Bunting, who
is out there hunting imaginary friends and
eating them.
Q: What inspired you to write The
Imaginary?
A: Once upon a time I had two pictures
appear in my head. The first was an
imaginary friend stood at the side of the
road, wondering what to do next, now their
real friend was gone, and the other was of
a canteen, a proper greasy spoon looking
caff, full of big blokes with string vests and
tattoos and cigarettes. That was the first
inkling of the Agency of Imaginary Friends,
which changed a lot by the time the book
got written. But that’s where it started. Two
mental pictures, colliding.

adventure and intrigue!
Join Quinn as he battles unexpected enemies,
discovers strange new lands and tries to conceal
two very big secrets from his crewmates. Nobody
knows what lies off the edge of the map, but it’s
more than anyone bargained for. 9+
Q: Did you ever
have your own
imaginary friend?
A: Not that I remember. I had a real one once
though.
Q: How did you come up with the
character Mr Bunting?
A: Mr Bunting appeared knocking at
Amanda’s door one day when I knew there
needed to be a villain, but I didn’t know who
or what it would be.
Q: How do you keep your beard so
beautiful?
A: Laziness and oils.
Q: Do you ever turn to the back of a book
to read the end first?
A: I sometimes read the last page of my own
books out at readings, because I’m proud
of some of my endings, but I prefer to know
nothing at all about a book before I read it.

house in the small country town where they lived

WINNER OF THE 2014 INDIE
AWARDS and WINNER OF THE
2014 MAN BOOKER PRIZE
A novel of the cruelty of war, and tenuousness
of life and the impossibility of love. This novel is
a story about the many forms of love and death,
of war and truth, as one man comes of age,
prospers, only to discover all that he has lost.
This year’s Indie Awards winner has also won the
world’s most prestigious award – the 2014 Man
Booker Prize. A.C. Grayling, Chair of judges,
commented: ‘The two great themes from the
origin of literature are love and war: this is a
magnificent novel of love and war. Written in
prose of extraordinary elegance and force, it
bridges East and West, past and present, with a
story of guilt and heroism. ‘This is the book that
Richard Flanagan was born to write.’
The dark, brilliant novel by
the author of The Informers.
Set during the era of notorious kingpin Pablo
Escobar, The Sound of Things Falling is a gritty
page-turner exploring the effect the drug trade has
had on regular Colombians, as seen through the
experiences of a young law professor.

and the parts they played not only in its society but
also in its public life.
It is early 1942 and Australia is
in the midst of war. Dr Ibaraki
is arrested as an enemy alien
and sent to Loveday internment camp. As tensions
