The CRFU Historical Trust is seeking items of significant
interest to establish a history of Canterbury and Crusaders
Rugby.
Items of interest to the Trust could be jerseys, caps, ties,
pins, trophies, photos, medals, letters, etc. All items will be
subject to a standard museum authenticity and approval
process for proper preservation, cataloguing and storage.
Donated items that have been formally accepted will
become part of a web site display that individuals can view
worldwide. At appropriate times items may be on display in
the CRFU offices at Rugby Park.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Welcome to the 2016 Rugby season. It seems like so
quickly we have finished last season and we are already
waiting with anticipation for this new season to start.
2015 was again a very busy and also a very rewarding year
for not only Canterbury but also for New Zealand rugby.
Super 15, Club, ITM Cup and World Cup competitions have
all been played and won.
The 2015 Crusaders side had by their standards a
disappointing season with a 9 win – 7 loss record and for
the first time in many years failed to make the playoffs,
albeit only just missing out. I know they were all bitterly
disappointed and I’m sure they will be going all out this year
to put themselves back to where we all like to see them, at
the top. To Todd (who is stepping aside after his campaign),
all his coaching and management staff and players, I wish
you all the best in your quest to win the 2016 Super Rugby
title.
The 2015 ITM Cup team has an outstanding season and put
themselves back at the top of the Provincial Rugby ladder
by winning the ITM Cup. Throughout the round robin games
they played some super rugby and had only the 1 loss to
Taranaki who they were to meet and beat 46 – 20 in the
semi-final. (revenge was sweet). Progressing onto the final
against Auckland in what was a hard fought but entertaining
game played right to the 83rd minute with Canterbury
winning 25-23. Congratulations to all those involved with this
team in making their season such a success. Good luck for
the 2016 season.

I must also congratulate our U19’s for winning the National
U19 tournament in Taupo. They played an outstanding
brand of rugby both attacking and defending and were
worthy champions, winning the final and Graham Mourie
Cup by beating Waikato 41-35.
To all our other representative teams including Country,
Women’s, Colts, Maori, U18’s, U16’s and down through the
younger grades, I congratulate all players, coaches and
management on the way you represented our great
province throughout the season.
Congratulations must also go to the winners of our Premier
competitions played in town and country. The Metro winners
were Waihora who beat Southbridge with an extra time try
to win 15-14, and the North Canterbury winners for the very
1st time were Saracens who beat Ashley 22-15. Great effort
by all teams.
The All Blacks with Steve Hansen, Richie McCaw and so
many other players and management from Canterbury
deserve the utmost praise for winning the 2016 Rugby
World Cup and making it back to back cups. What an
amazing effort and they deserve all the accolades for what
was an outstanding tournament culminating in the great win
over Australia in the final.
There are so many others to thank for their contributions to
the game we are all involved in, the players, coaches,
managers, referees, assistant referees, administrators,
ground staff and all the Mums and Dads. I thank you all so
much for your time and efforts and hope you can all do the
same for the 2016 season.

unheralded, a massive thank you for the tremendous work
you do behind the scenes. Your hard work and dedication
goes an enormous way to making Canterbury Rugby as

ACTIVITIES
After-match and pre-match functions are held on days when
the Crusaders and Canterbury A teams are playing or there
is a Test Match in Christchurch.
Each year in conjunction with the CRFU a “Player of the
Year” dinner is held featuring a guest speaker and
entertainer. Away trips are arranged to some Crusaders,
Canterbury and Test matches.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Following the resounding success of the gala opening in
2015, the Metro Division One will again kick off with a gala
opening day, where all 12 teams will be hosted by Belfast
Rugby Football Club at Sheldon Park. This will provide the
platform to promote club rugby in the best possible light,
bringing players, spectators and sponsors together at the
same time and same venue. A feature of the day will be the
first round clash of last season’s finalists, Lincoln University
versus Christchurch.
Throughout all open grades, the competition is certain to be
fierce and competitive as ever. The Metro competition
continues to develop our players and provides a springboard
for many players to achieve personal milestones and
representative honours.
We are indebted to our competition sponsor, Hawkins. The
Hawkins Club Ambassadors are a welcome addition to the
club environment, it is great to see them welcomed into the
clubs as part of our wider community.
Thank you also to our team of roving reporters, braving both
weather and crowds, to report on club rugby. “Game Day” is
now eagerly awaited each week with the Game Day match
reports often picked up by mainstream media to report results
and profile our club players.
The Metro Sevens circuit grows each year and has
developed into a hard fought competition and again enables

those players wanting to develop their Seven’s skills and the
opportunity to represent Canterbury at the National
tournaments.
Metro clubs are fortunate with the support both on and off the
field from both the CRFU Board and Staff. In particular to Tim,
Alannah and John, thank you for your efforts and contribution.
Mention must also be made of the referees, Canterbury is
well served by the referees, we are fortunate to have the
number and quality referees that we do, providing referees to
fixtures well into the junior grades. To all referees, thank you.
We continue to see the development of up and coming
younger referees throughout all the grades and this will
ensure the quality of our refereeing stocks into the future.
To the players, coaches, managers, administrators, referees
and all volunteers, thank you for your contribution to our
game. I wish you well and every success, both on and off the
field for the 2016 season and look forward to seeing many of
you in Clubrooms around our city.

I would like to welcome everyone to the 2016 season. We
will be looking to continue the strong showing from last
year. This season there may be an opportunity for our
senior rep team to play a couple of Australian teams.
It was great to see Hornby and Rolleston join the Division 1
ranks. I was pleased that they were more than competitive
and hopefully they can build on it this season.
Last year we had some issues with side line behaviour. We
will be looking to clamp down on it so I urge everyone to
keep their comments and support positive and leave out this
negative behaviour. If people do come across this abuse I
ask that they point out to the individuals that it is
unacceptable or report it to us so it can be dealt with. This
includes our referees who are an important part of our game
and we should all be very grateful for the time they put in to
make each match possible.
Again we are very grateful to our sponsors, Luisetti Seeds
senior competition, Totalspan JAB, Rata Foundation,
Blackwells and Farmland Fuels. Without their support we
would not be able to function the way we do.
Again we have Kahu on board as our Coach and
Development Coordinator. As well as his usual work this
year he is looking to implement a plan to give those players
who show great potential an opportunity to become involved
in an academy system.
This year we have a new draws and results coordinator and
I would like to thank Kathy for the great job she did over the
last few years.

NORTH CANTERBURY RUGBY
FOOTBALL SUB UNION
We had a fantastic start to the 2015 year. The season was
kicked off by a hugely successful fund raising dinner for the
North Canterbury Representative team, which in turn was
followed by an equally successful trip to Australia. The
support given by those who attended is indicative of the
generosity and support we are fortunate to have within our
region. A big thank-you must also go to John Philp for all his
hard work in organizing the major part of this trans-Tasman
opportunity for our players. Hopefully this tour is going to be
a bi-annual event going forward. We will be planning on
playing Queensland and New South Wales Country
representative teams prior to the Southbridge Shield game
this year, with talks already under way.
The Southbridge Shield came and went and could easily
have gone North Canterbury’s way. Hopefully the added
game time and competition we receive from our
counterparts across the ditch will afford us the chance to
hone our team’s skills before this fixture. The Colts had a
great game on the day which ended in a draw. Both teams
should be proud of the way the game was played,
regardless of the outcome. A big thank-you must be said to
Shane Fletcher and his assistants for doing a sterling job
with the team and also Stocky and Ian with the Colts team.
At the business end of the season Kaiapoi hosted an
outstanding finals day. And congratulations must be given to
Saracens for their first ever win on finals day in the Luisetti
Seeds first division competition. And further congratulations
must go to all other winners and competitors on the day. A

I would like to thank the NCRSU Board for their guidance
over the year. And a special thank-you to Ross Dixon for all
his energy and efficiency. Also to Margaret Bartholomeusz
for the very efficient recording and administration of the
financials. To all the referees we must say a big thank-you
as well. We would not have a game without you. I think a
recruitment drive is needed to ensure we continue to have
the great standard of refereeing that we do have in North
Canterbury. And I know of one certain retirement from the
ref’s panel.
On a further positive note, going forward North Canterbury
Rugby is in great heart. With the Stag’s programme up and
running, the Australian games to look forward to and the
JAB well organized by Lyn and his team – ably assisted by
Wayne Marsters: the future is looking bright for North
Canterbury Rugby.
