ANCHOR
April 2015
President’s Corner
Spring Has Sprung
With a handful of warm days in March, the ice left the lake in a hurry. Fortunately,
it doesn’t appear that much damage was done to any docks this year—always
a risk.
By the time you receive this issue of the Anchor, dredging should be in progress
if not already completed. They are scheduled to be here for two weeks in early
April. I believe many of the stumps in the northeast cove of the west lake will be
removed making navigation at the north end a little easier.
Good news for many property owners—FEMA has agreed to use the flood
elevation previously established by the Iowa DNR. This will remove many
properties from the flood plain, requiring flood insurance if a mortgage is on the
property. Bad news is it may take a few more months for FEMA to revise the map
allowing financial institutions to get new flood determinations and allow the flood
insurance to be cancelled. Read the article on the inside of the Anchor for more
detail.
Look through this issue of the Anchor for the dates and times of several
activities this year. Pancake breakfast, fishing derby, and fireworks...all making
for a great summer at Lake Ponderosa.
Also remember to check out our website from time to time and use the Trading
Post to buy and sell items you need or want to get rid of: www.lakeponderosa.org
There’s still time to join the Lake Ponderosa Association if you have not done so
already. If you lost your membership form, contact any board member and we’ll
get you another one.

Just a reminder...there are many people who use the lake and roads of Lake
Ponderosa. On occasion it can be crowded. Be alert. Be careful. And have fun.
Slow down a little and enjoy the beauty of our lake.

OPEN FORUM FOR NON-BOARD MEMBERS:
Guests were welcome by President Dave Arendt. No issues were presented.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Tornado Siren: Now that Carter is no longer on the board, we need to appoint someone to take over the testing of
the siren in the summer and to disconnect and re-connect the battery. Robb offered to do this.
Supplies: Some additional mailing supplies will need to be purchased due to the size of the magnets that we will
be mailing with the membership. There is also a request for more paper towels.
Boat Ramp: Is currently open for the winter.
Pop Can Cages: Morris mentioned that Deb was not getting much help. Morris is willing to help but she needs to
call him when she is going down to do it. Someone has witness cans being stolen. It was reported to the sheriff and
they will be watching the person in question.
Septic/Water Testing: No new report
Roads/Accesses: No report. Barbie was not in attendance.

Building: We need to throw away one roaster but shouldn’t need to have to replace it. The pole light is not working
and neither is the motion detector light on the building. Robb will get a price to have this replaced with an LED light.

24 THINGS YOU SHOULD NOT FLUSH
DOWN THE TOILET
Using a toilet to dispose of trash is bad for many reasons: clogged toilets that require
plumbers or replacement, damaged wastewater treatment centers (the cost of which
gets passed on to utility customers), expensive cleanups, toxic environmental issues
and raw sewage overflows. The list goes on and on… and on. To help you avoid causing most all of them and keep
your toilet flushing correctly, here’s a list of things you should not flush down the toilet. Ever.
1. Band-Aids – Made out of non-biodegradable plastic. Toss them in the trash.
2. Condoms – Bad news for septic tanks and
sewage treatment plants. Condoms gum up the
works.
3. Cotton Balls & Q-Tips – Contrary to popular
opinion, these don’t break down once flushed.
They gather and eventually clog pipes.

4. Food – Compost or trash it. Food can clump
together and cause clogs.
5. Facial Cleaning Pads – Thicker than toilet
paper and thus causing problems.
6. Dental Floss – NOT biodegradable. Will
wrap up around small clogs to make them even
bigger.
7. Dirt – Dump it outside, not in the toilet.
Continued on page 7
www.lakeponderosa.org
Continued from page 6
page 7
8. Dryer Sheets – Made out of synthetic materials, not
biodegradable.
9. Prescription Medicines – Destroys bacteria and
contaminates groundwater. Bring meds back to pharmacies
for disposal.
10. Grease & Fat – Congeals once it cools down, filling pipes
with solid mass that blocks pipes.
11. Pesticides – Destroys the good bacteria used to break
down waste.

12. Baby Wipes – Too thick, can cause clogs.
13. Cleaning Wipes – Ditto.

14. Disposable diapers – Other than the fact that they were
giant, disposable diapers are made out of plastic. Throw them
in the trash if you have to use them.
15. Cat Litter – Would you pour sand in your toilet? This is
basically the same thing, but filled with potentially toxic cat
feces.
16. Tampons and Pads – Trash can is best here.

17. Cigarette Butts – Full of toxic chemicals.
18. Chewing Gum – Can literally gum up the works.
19. Nail Polish & Remover – Toxic.
20. Dead Pet Goldfish – Not necessarily bad, but can cause problems with clogging or could introduce disease.
21. Cosmetics – Potentially toxic and harmful.
22. Paper Towels – Do not break down like toilet paper. Too thick.
23. Toilet Scrubbers – Do I have to say why?
24. So what’s left to flush? Just toilet paper (made from 100% recycled paper, of course) and human waste –
THAT’S IT.

Three Numbers Can Save Your Life
When someone has suffered an accident or serious health issue, time is of the essence. Everyone and
everything needs to be as exact as possible. When you have called for an ambulance, you want it to arrive as
soon as possible.
That is why it is essential that you have your house number on your house where it can be easily seen from the
road—day or night. Help us help you in your time of need.

The Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) request for the
flood pool on Ponderosa Lake was approved by FEMA
on February 25th, 2015. The LOMR, which shows
the area that would be inundated by a 100-year flood
pool of 859.9 ft., NAVD988, will become effective on
July 16, 2015. Until that date, federally insured lending
institutions, and Poweshiek County, are required to
continue using the flood hazard area shown on the
June 27, 2014, effective Flood Insurance Rate Map
(FIRM). Once the LOMR becomes effective, owners
whose properties have been removed by the LOMR
from the mapped flood hazard area may want to
consider requesting an updated determination from
their lenders as to whether the purchase of flood
insurance will continue to be required as a condition of
their loans.
Please note that most lender flood insurance
determinations are performed using automated
methods (i.e., if the determination company’s computer
finds that the digitized flood hazard layer crosses the
digitized parcel line for the property, it might consider
the “entire” property to be in the flood hazard area).
Because of this, it’s not uncommon for a property
owner to be told that flood insurance is required as a
condition of their loan even though the FIRM clearly
shows that the buildings on the property are located
outside the mapped flood hazard area. If this occurs,
the property owner can request what is known as a
Letter of Map Amendment Out-As-Shown (LOMA –OAS).
The difference between a request for a LOMA-OAS
and a typical LOMA is that, because the buildings are
