The Keltic Buzzz… - Keltic Transportation
The Keltic Buzzz… Volume 26 June 2015 KELTIC’S 18TH ANNIVERSARY We at Keltic wish to express our sincere appreciation to all of the employees for their faithful support as we celebrate our eighteenth year in business. When the company was founded in 1997 with 2 employees, we could hardly foresee the growth to an international company with a staff of over 200. This could not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of each member of the team. Keltic would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank the valued customers who have expressed confidence in us and who have been so loyal over the years. A big “thank-you” to our suppliers for their part in our successful business operation for providing Keltic with the necessary tools to keep us moving forward on a daily basis. Keltic is not only a transportation & logistics business, but a true family. From our drivers to the office staff, everyone is treated with respect and is viewed as an integral team. Here’s to another eighteen years…. Cheers!! "Opportunities don't happen. You create them." Chris Grosser As the snow melts and the days lengthen, it is time for another very special announcement from “Operation Keltic” We are continuously looking at ways to improve the effectiveness of our trucking operation. As we enjoy another successful year in trucking, our goal is to become more efficient and interactive with our customers and drivers. With this constant goal in mind, I’m excited to announce some personnel realignments that took place this past April. Brandon Mullins has assumed the role of Operations Supervisor. Brandon’s new re- sponsibilities will include driver relations (related to operations), working very closely with all regional dispatches, and employee scheduling within our entire Trucking operation. Marco Vienneau has returned to his old schedule of working Friday, Saturday , Sun- day and Monday in Operations. Matt Leblanc has moved into our Trucking Operation assuming the role of Maritime planner. He will be working alongside Alain in this region. Elaine Sode has become a member of Moncton Logistics and will be working closely with Alice , Terry , Jacques and Scott. Brandon Coles has assumed the responsibility of Ontario/Quebec planner along with his current responsibilities. He will now work closely with Darren in this region. Hasan Ari has joined forces with Jeff Worton in our Moncton 24 division to help further grow this area of our business. Please continue to offer everyone your support as we transition over the next couple of months! Drive Safely!!! Chris Steeves DRIVERS CORNER Truck Cleanliness At Keltic we take pride in our fleet and in doing so we ensure and require our trucks cleanliness and appearance to be kept in Tip-Top condition. Trailer Cleanliness Please be sure to sweep out your trailer when dropping it in our yard or at a customer. Let’s make sure it is clean for the next driver who pins up! As a reminder, we will be placing this decal in each of our company owned and long term rentals!! Thank you for your cooperation!!! Note from US Dispatch When heading into the US with a load, it’s important to let dispatch know what your ETA to drop is unless you’re on track to deliver at a pre-determined time. Once at your drop, it would be helpful to send us a message stating how many driving hours you’ll have left for that day once empty. And finally, once you are on your way back to the Maritimes, whether it be from the US or Ontario, please send a message stating when you are ready to leave again with your next dispatch. This is all to help things run more smoothly and minimize the amount of time not driving. For us in the office to be as efficient as possible, it’s important that these communications and most other non-emergencies be relayed over the satellite instead of the phone please. Let’s all work together to make things run as seamlessly as possible. Take care and drive safe! Note from Ontario Dispatch reminders for drivers coming in and out of Ontario and Quebec regions: Please make sure when dropping trailer they are clean (and fueled if a reefer). Make sure accurate messages are sent indicating where trailers are dropped, if paperwork was signed, where paperwork was left etc. If dropping at Dixie yard ensure we are dropping in our section, we continuously are getting charged extra when we drop in someone else’s area, please use the “overflow” section if Keltic’s area is full. ANOTHER NEW SERVICE FROM KELTIC I am happy to announce that Keltic now offers complete North American coverage for Trade Show and Exhibition moves!! Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Michael Hirlehay. By way of personal introduction, my background in Transportation is varied, in that I have moved General Commodity Dry Freight in a 3PL and Asset Based environment for many years and for the past seventeen years I have been specializing in Trade Show and Exhibition Transport. I was the sole Canadian Employee of Transit Air Cargo; a Southern California based 3PL Trade Show Carrier for over 10 years and more recently handled Trade Show business for and through Traffic Tech for roughly 14 months. While many carriers and sales rep’s tend to shy away from Trade Show moves, I find them to be a very challenging and interesting market segment. (Strict attention to detail and constant client communication are all it takes to make the difference) There are few occurrences in a Shipper, Mar-Comm Manager, or Sales Managers routine that create more discomfort or anxiety than having to arrange for participation in a Trade Show or Industry Event. When faced with an Exhibitor Manual of 300 plus pages, covering everything from Electrical Hook-Ups to Carpet Rentals, and I&D Service to Drayage Fees, it can become daunting and many feel they are taking the easy way or saving money by using the dedicated “Official Carrier”, this could not possibly be further from the truth. When choosing the “Official Carrier” they are generally turning their materials over to a common carrier (YRC, ABF, etc.) who will be moving their goods at a tariff rate as Class 125 (Expensive), and taking the goods through their “Hub & Spoke” terminal system (Longer Transit Times, More Handling, Higher Risk). As a Trade Show Shipping Specialist over the past many years, it has been my experience and pleasure to not only educate exhibitors as to what their alternatives are, but to also save them a great deal off of what they might otherwise have paid using the “Official Carrier”. Many of the relationships that I have fostered with Trade Show shippers endure to this day with the points of contact feeling (correctly) that it is not so much the company that has looked after their needs and “had their back”, so much as the point of contact they have been dealing with, a view that I take great pride in. ANOTHER NEW SERVICE FROM KELTIC CONT’D The higher the degree of stress that you can remove from someone’s day, and the greater the amount of time and effort you can save for them, coupled with the ability to call their attention to any potential pitfalls in their shipping plans (Targeted Floor Plans, Black Out Dates, etc.) equals the highest degree of rapport based client service. Once I have successfully moved one event for a new client, I always solicit their entire years’ worth of events (Cross-Border, Canada Domestic, and US Domestic, Storage, Show to Show, etc.), to ascertain other areas where I can assist in streamlining their processes. This is something that NO “Official Carrier” can do because they only offer Trade Show Service to the shows to which they are attached. I have an already well-established network of Local P&D Agents throughout the USA and Canada to ensure that I will always be in a position to successfully meet all of my prospects and clients specific move-in, move-out, and/or storage needs. (3:00 AM on Easter Sunday? No Problem!) Whether you are an existing Customer or Prospect, and whether you are an experienced Exhibit Shipper or a novice, whenever you are in the process of arranging Trade Show or Exhibition moves, please contact me and it will be my absolute pleasure to work with you to arrange the best possible solution for any and all of your Trade Show Transportation Requirements. He has just completed his Supply Chain & Logistics Program in St. John’s, NL and is excited to begin his new journey in the Logistics field. We are very pleased to add personnel to this location as part of the continued growth and expansion of our logistics division. Our newest driver, Raymond Reavis, will be starting early May and is looking forward to his new position with Keltic and will be running Canada only focusing on Maritimes to NL, full loads and LTL. I hope everyone’s 2015 is off and running to a great start and anything the NL branch can do to assist in any way, please feel free to reach out as we work together as a team to provide the best service possible in our industry as our customers have come to expect from Keltic. Jeff Walker Oakville Branch With the on ongoing increase with Truck and Trailer capacity issues, here in Ontario and in general, we have been offering our customer’s a rail option with some success. Why Rail? Cost reduction with only 1 – 1 ½ days more in transit with door to door service. With our expertise of personnel, we make it happen without compromising service. Orlando Mazzuca Container Chassis’s Keltic is pleased to announce the addition of container chassis’s to our fleet. We plan on offering container drayage throughout the Atlantic provinces and hot shot container deliveries to other destinations throughout North America. The transportation landscape continues to change in the Atlantic Provinces in terms of available capacity for container drayage. Keltic plans to aggressively tap into this market in 2015. If you have any questions please contact Randy Hutchison in our Logistics Department. [email protected] 888-854-1233 Hi everybody! After 11 great years, tomorrow will be time for me to leave on another adventure. I’ll be bringing many good memories with me. It all started when I took a big drag off Noel’s cigar at the Pump House Brewery at my first Good Friday party with the Keltic gang. Then, we switched from the dispatch board to a computerized dispatch system and then, the big move into this beautiful new building. I’ll always remember the Keltic golf days, Christmas parties and Halloween days with the nice costumes. I’ll never forget the crazy stuff like the races in the parking lot between Simon and I, race between Randy and I and the burger eating challenge I received from Noel. Terry, I’ll still hear my phone ringing with a call coming from extension # 111 and Andrea, I’ll still hear you paging me to pick up line 2, 3, 7 and 9….LOL! I’ll also never forget how hard we worked over the years. In the days when we only had half the staff we have now, there’s been a lot of long days and many after hours phone calls but at the end, it all paid off because we accomplished our goals by working together, as a team, and that’s one thing I want to bring with me everywhere I go. Leaving Keltic was a very hard decision for me to make because it’s not only a job but many friends I’m leaving behind. My family is filled with mixed emotions. For my kids, Keltic is the place where I’ve worked forever, the place where everybody’s nice and funny and they don’t really understand why I’m leaving. I think my Son’s first words were “Keltic Simon speaking”, he’s going to be 9 next month so he’s heard my cell phone ring in the evening once or twice. Keltic has been a big part of my family’s life and we are very thankful and appreciate it very much. Thank you all for everything, I’ll miss you! Take care! Marc Gallant Thank You Marc for 11 great years, you will be missed. We wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors. Sincerely, The Keltic Family! Trailer information: Did you know? All 142… series trailers are outfitted with the Hendrickson TIREMAXX PRO tire pressure control system. The TIREMAXX PRO controls tire pressure by inflating low tires, equalizing pressure across all wheel positions and relieving pressure from overinflated tires. Working off the truck’s air supply, the process is fully automatic and requires no intervention from the driver. How this helps you: often small punctures from nails or other items that cause slow leaks are not even noticed. The system will continually pump air into the tire and keep it at the required pressure until the unit can be brought in for service. No down time on the side of the road waiting for the service truck. Occasionally, you may pick up a 142 series trailer that appears to have a flat tire (from a slow leak). If this is the case, hook up and wait a couple minutes. The tire may inflate totally allowing you to get to a service shop or your next destination. There is a small green light on the front driver’s side corner of these trailers indicating the pressure system is operating correctly. How this helps us: properly inflated tires wear much better and get much longer tread life. This reduces tire costs in the long run. Being able to repair tires at a tire shop rather than having a service truck come find you saves unnecessary maintenance costs. ATDynamic Aerodynamic Trailer Tails We have recently begun installing “Trailer Tails” on all owned equipment. We will continue to do so until all units are completed. These tails help improve fuel economy at highway speeds through the reduction in drag at the rear of the trailer. They are also said to reduce road spray and stabilize the trailer in heavy winds. The early results and feedback is positive. Please make sure the tails are in the open position at all times during highway driving, except when in Quebec where they must remain closed. Quebec has yet to approve this new technology. If you have any questions on how they operate, please feel free to ask anyone in operations or Mike Clements. There is also a demonstration video which plays in the operator’s lunch room area. WELCOME ANNOUNCEMENT !! Donor Spotlight – Keltic Logistics & Transportation We would like to thank Keltic Logistics (Oakville office) for donating $1,140 from their Employee Christmas Fundraising Drive 2014. A Keltic employee discovered our Club while visiting the Festival of Trees at the Oakville Place Mall. The employees were impressed to learn that May Court is an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff and very minimal administrative costs. We are honoured to have been chosen as their charity of choice, and 100% of Keltic Logistics’ donation will benefit May Court Programs and Supported Charities in Oakville.
