Oktoberfest!

While October begins in Michigan, Oktoberfest, in Munich, Germany,
draws to a close. The 16-day, 200 year-old traditional festival began on September 18, when the Mayor tapped the first keg of beer and the celebratory mug of
beer was passed, by tradition, to Bavarian Prime Minister Horst Seehofer. Sevenmillions people followed as the sea of tents which comprise this yearly spectacle
then opened for business for over two weeks.
What’s all the merriment about? It was initially to celebrate, but now commemorate, the October marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to the SaxonHildburghausen Princess Therese…in 1810. The Munich-wide wedding reception, which lasted five days, was so much fun it was repeated the following year.
Modern Oktoberfest is more than suds and sonnets – it’s a spectacular unilateral World’s Fair of customary cuisine, Oom-pah-pah music, parades, rides,
carnival games, antiques, crafts, cultural museums and more than 600 vendors
spread across 100 acres. Believe it or not, there is no admission charge!
“Oktoberfest is held in what is essentially a city park. There are 15 tents –
they call them tents - but they are semi-permanent structures that take months
to erect and are dismantled after October 4th. They feature hardwood floors and
stadium kitchens and bathrooms, so each tent can hold up to 15,000 people,”
says Larry Olmsted, an American travel writer who has attended Oktoberfest a
number of times.
The tents are sponsored by beer companies. Visitors will not be served beer
unless they are associated with a table in a tent. Most of the table space during
timed afternoon and evening sessions in the tents is sold ahead of time. So are
the hotel rooms.
“It’s been said that hotel rooms within 250 miles of Munich were sold out
this year, so you really should plan ahead,” Olmsted advises. “Many Europeans
ride in by train for the day.”
In fact, the middle weekend is known to be frequented by Italians. Does
every wurst-eating tourist wear the colorful lederhosen outfits?
“You don’t have to, but locals like the people who do. It’s respectful.”
Mandated, though, by strict law, is that all of the 6.5 million liters of beer
served and consumed at Oktoberfest comes from one of Munich ’s six breweries
which brew real Oktoberfest beer. Paulaner, the top-selling beer at the event, and
its sister brand Hacker Pschorr, and joined by Lowenbrau, Augustiner, Spaten
and Hofbrau.
Each September, Frankenmuth, Michigan, holds the only Oktoberfest celebration outside of Germany sanctioned by the city of Munich . A German missionary, in 1840, conceived the idea of the settlement of Frankenmuth, which,
today, celebrates its’ Bavarian heritage by welcoming visitors to a colorful if commercial, quaint if kitschy pocket of tourism just off I-75 between Flint and Saginaw. Visitors who missed this year’s celebrations can always stop into Frankenmuth for the atmosphere and…a stein of suds.

If so, you don’t need to travel for the experience. With a little effort, your own
backyard can become a stopover for some of North America’s most colorful
wildlife.
Fall and spring are migratory season in America as flocks of birds
migrate between hemispheres. Like any weary traveler, these natives look
for places to rest and refuel. Welcoming them to your yard is a way to protect
our natural heritage and enjoy their beauty at the same time.
“Transforming your yard or garden into a wildlife refuge is fun,” says
Spencer Schock, Founder of WindowAlert, makers of bird-friendly products
for homes. “Children love an outdoor project and the sight of wild birds adds
dazzle to your family’s seasonal experience.”
Here are some tips for watching and keeping birds safe during
migration:
* Birds migrate because of food, not weather. The cooler months make it
more difficult to find sustenance, so placing a bird feeder in your backyard
with water and high energy foods like meal worms, black oil sunflower seeds,
or suet will help them complete their journey.
* Birds don’t just take one long flight. They need lots of stopover and staging
areas during their travels. Encourage them to linger in your backyard by
providing shelter, such as a bird house. Opt for water-repellant bird houses
with hinged roofs so the house can be cleaned after nesting. Avoid perches,
which make birds easy prey for predators like cats.
* Man-made structures, even in rural areas, can be hazardous to migrating

Any time a store offers an instant-savings deal I get excited. Sales that offer
instant savings of a specified dollar amount when shoppers buy certain items are
great opportunities for us to stock up at sale prices and to actually get the store to
“pay us” to shop.
Recently, my store had a “Buy 10, Save $3” sale. The store’s weekly advertisement showed a group of assorted products. Buying any products on the page in
combinations of ten would yield an instant savings of $3 at the bottom of my receipt.
This particular ad was divided into sections: one section with items priced at $1, the
next group with items priced at $2.50 and so on.
When I see a sale like this, I immediately start crunching numbers. In this
type of sale the least expensive items tend to be the best deal. For example, if I buy
ten items from the dollar group of products, I’ll reach $10 in cost – but I’ll receive
instant savings of $3 for buying ten items. So, I’ll ultimately pay $7 for my ten items
– 70 cents each.
So far so good. But what happens if I use coupons on these items? Things
start to get fun! Remember that coupons will apply to prices of items before the
instant savings is applied at the register, so shoppers can often enjoy coupon overage during these sales. Overage refers to the phenomenon of receiving more coupon
value for an item than it cost in the first place. And, as a coupon shopper, I love working overage into my shopping trips to bring my entire grocery bill down.
To make the most of the instant savings promotion, I focus on the items
for which I know I have coupons. During this sale, a few of the items in the dollar
group caught my eye: boxed rice mixes, packages of latex gloves, bottled teas and
sandwich bags, all priced at $1. I had the following coupons: two 75-cent coupons for
rice mixes, three $1 coupons for latex gloves, one Buy One, Get One Free bottled tea
coupon, and three 50-cent coupons for sandwich bags.
Now, if I purchased these ten items at $1 each, I’d qualify for the $3 in instant savings promotion. But of course, we want to use our coupons, too. Here’s what
my shopping trip looks like so far:
2 boxed rice mixes ($2 cost) – two 75-cent coupons = 50 cents
3 packages of gloves ($3 cost) – three $1 coupons = free
2 bottled teas ($2 cost) – BOGO coupon = $1
3 packages of sandwich bags ($3 cost) – three 50-cent coupons = $1.50
After applying all my coupons, my register total comes to just $3 – but that’s not
what I pay. Remember, buying these ten items during this sale qualifies me for $3 in
instant savings. And when that instant savings is automatically applied at the register, how much did I really pay for these items?
Zero. That’s right, I paid nothing (but sales tax) for these ten items.
How did this happen? I received overage from the coupons I used for several of these items, which in turn was applied to the price of the other items in the
list. So let’s break it down.
The rice mixes, priced at $1, actually cost 70 cents each when purchased in
a group of ten items during the instant savings sale. The 75-cent coupon I used on
this item scanned automatically, applied to the $1 price of the rice before the instant
savings. But since the end cost of my rice was just 70 cents a box, the extra 5 cents
per coupon was applied to the other items I bought in the same trip.
The same thing happened with the latex gloves and one bottle of the tea.
They were priced at a dollar but my coupons made them totally free; and since the
actual price of each package was reduced to just 70 cents for the instant savings sale,
I gained 30 cents in overage for each of the coupon I used. (I didn’t even want the
gloves! But I often work things like this into these kinds of deals in order to help
bring the price down on the other items I do want. My unwanted items go to friends,
family and the local food pantry.)
Take a close look at the next instant savings sale at your local store. I’ll bet
you’ll never look at them quite the same way again.

Tips To Avoid Colds And Flu This Season
StatePoint) It’s cold and flu season again, so it’s time for a refresher
course on what you can do to keep your family healthy.
Most people know colds are less severe than influenza, but
they’re often unsure about specific symptoms. For example, the flu
is often accompanied by a high fever (between 101 and 104 degrees
Fahrenheit), and can cause extreme exhaustion that can last from two
to three weeks. A cold usually lasts only a few days.
If you’d like to avoid using up those sick days, here are some
tips to help you avoid colds and flu:
Become a Germ-a-phobe
• Maybe you don’t need to become a full-blown hypochondriac,
but a little fastidiousness in areas of public hygiene can go a long
way in avoiding illness this season.
• Put distance between you and anybody displaying symptoms
like coughing or sneezing. Wash your hands thoroughly and often,
using an alcohol-based sanitizing gel or wipe if water and soap
aren’t available. Frequently disinfect high hand-traffic items, such
as doorknobs and keyboards.
• Be sure to get sufficient rest, exercise and eat right, including
plenty of vegetables and fresh fruit. Foods rich in vitamins A, C
and E, help maintain a healthy immune system.
• Most importantly, get your annual flu shot! This year for
the first time, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention is
recommending everyone ages six months and older get the flu
shot. However, remember it takes a few weeks after your shot to
begin reaping flu-fighting benefits.
Give Your Booster a Boost
While most flu vaccines are 70 to 90 percent effective, efficacy
can be less in the elderly or individuals with immune system problems.
Either way, you may also want to consider giving your booster shot a
boost.
“A unique, natural compound extracted from Japanese
medicinal mushrooms, known as AHCC, can enhance the power of the
seasonal flu shot. All you need is one gram per day for immune system
maintenance and three grams per day when fighting an infection,”
says Dr. Lawrence P. Kempf, a New York City internist who recently
researched the ability of AHCC to boost the flu vaccine. “AHCC helps
increase certain white blood cells, which help the body fight off viruses
and infections, and also activates the immune system when the body is
under attack.”
AHCC can be easily found at health food stores and natural
grocery outlets, and can also be purchased online at kinokoAHCC.

When You Must, Admit Defeat
If you do contract a cold or flu, the best thing to do is stay home
and avoid spreading it to others. Rest and plenty of fluids will help
your recovery more than work and stress.
It’s also important you take any medications prescribed by your
doctor, such as antivirals. Different from antibiotics, antiviral drugs
can shorten the time you are sick and prevent serious flu complications.
And if you’re under the weather, make sure you sneeze into a
tissue or your elbow to avoid spreading germs to others!

great inside and out. Get some honest feedback from your Realtor, friends
and family about how your home shows.
