With 96 percent of the soybean crop emerged, soybean condition rated 77 percent good to excellent, up from 74 percent the previous week. Twelve percent of the spring wheat acreage was at or beyond the heading stage, three days ahead of the five-year average and five days ahead of last year. Spring wheat condition rated 68 percent good to excellent, down 6 percentage points from the last week. Many corn fields are now entering the “Grand Growth” phase The growing point is now just a little above the soil surface for six leaf corn, meaning that the stalk tissue is starting to elongate and very rapid growth is about to begin. By the V6 or six collar stage of corn (about 24-30 days after emergence - 475 GDU) all plant structures have developed on the growing point. All plant parts are present. The growing point and tassel, differentiated in V5, are above the soil surface. The stalk is beginning a period of rapid elongation getting taller. The determination of kernel rows per ear begins and is complete by about V10-V12. This yield component is strongly influenced by hybrid genetics. Tillers (suckers) begin to emerge at this time. Lower leaves degenerate and are torn from the stalk as it expands. During early June there is a new leaf emerging (V-stage) about every 3 days. June is the time to apply nitrogen (up to V8) before rapid uptake period in corn. Precise fertilizer placement is less critical. Lodging can often occur during this time since brace roots have not appeared. If a significant amount of N has been lost, it is likely that a supplemental fertilizer application will be necessary to reach the crop’s yield potential. The University of Minnesota has developed a worksheet to assist farmers with making supplemental N application decisions for corn. The worksheet can be found at:http://z.umn.edu/ supplementaln. In addition, the worksheet is available as an app for smart phones at http://z.umn. edu/cropcalc. Here are a few things to consider before applying supplemental fertilizer: • Soils that have been saturated for a long time will in all likelihood have stunted plants with reduced yield potential, so will require less N. • In instances where leaching has occurred, it is probable that the N has moved lower in the soil profile; however, it may not be lost, since increased root growth may put the N back in reach of the plant. • There are several new technologies focused on making supplemental (and variable rate) N decisions, and while they hold promise, they are new, and the jury is still out with respect to how well they work. Additional information can be found on the University of Minnesota Extension’s Nutrient Management home page at: http://www.extension.umn.edu/ agriculture/nutrient-man agement. Damping off or seedling soybeans may be occurring in areas of Minnesota based on the recent wet weather. Important soybean seedling diseases to scout for include Pythium and Rhizoctonia or Fusarium. The University of Minnesota Plant Disease Clinic (https://pdc.umn.edu) can help identify crop diseases. For more information and pictures of these soybean diseases people can consult the University of Minnesota Soybean Disease webpage at http://z.umn.edu/soybeandiseases. Industrial Commercial Agricultural Residential Providing Quality Electrical Service for Over 30 Years EXTENSION INFORMATION SELECTING FRUIT AND NUT PRODUCING PLANTS FOR YOUR LANDSCAPE U of M Extension Service There are many benefits to planting trees and shrubs in your landscape. Trees take in carbon dioxide and expel oxygen in a harmonious relationship with breathing animals and humans. “One acre of forest absorbs 6 tons of carbon dioxide and produces 4 tons of oxygen. Enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people.” (USDA) Trees improve soil and water quality, and energy conservation by providing summer shade and winter wind protection, wildlife habitat, sources for food, and increased aesthetic and economic value to home properties. There are trees and shrubs in Minnesota that produce edible fruits and nuts that people can harvest and use from the wild and in their backyard. Many Minnesotans hike forests and woodlands for wild edible fruits and nuts. An excellent wild gatherers resource is the Minnesota Harvester Handbook which addresses sustainable natural resource harvest practices and uses. This resource was developed by the University of Minnesota Extension with many contributors. It demonstrates the breadth and diversity of natural resources found in and around the state’s woodlands. Copies can be purchased at the Minnesota Bookstore: http://z.umn. edu/mhh. Homeowners who would like to plant trees and/or shrubs that produce edible fruits and nuts from their backyard have many plant options to choose from. The University of Minnesota Extension has an excellent web site that reviews many possible plants that can produce delicious nutritious foods. Categories on this web site include: apples, pears, cherries, plums, peaches, apricots, grapes, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, melons and other fruits. Under the “Other Fruits” section click on “Gathering and Growing Edible Fruits and Nuts”. This publication lists many fruit and nut plants that can be grown in home landscapes. http://z.umn.edu/umfruit. Resources to select landscape trees include: Recommended trees for specific regions of Minnesota: http://z.umn.edu/rectrees. UM Arboretum publication “The Value of Trees”: www.arboretum.umn.edu/valueoftrees. aspx. Mn/DOT Plant Selection program: http://www.dot.state. mn.us/roadsides/plantselector/. North Dakota Tree Book: www.ag.ndsu.edu/trees/handbook.htm. Crabapples – Select Apple Scab resistant varieties. http:// z.umn.edu/asrcrabapples. People who have disease or insect problems this summer can look at the UM Extension diagnostic web site: http://z.umn. edu/diagnose. Plant several different species of trees, shrubs and plants in the landscape for landscape diversity. No one species should represent more than 15 percent of the landscape. 651-923-4970 • www.knobelsdorffelectric.com ATKINSON CONSTRUCTION Of Oak Center Inc.
