2014 Texas National Voter Guide 2014 Texas Voter Guide Table of Contents • Importance in getting civically engaged • Important dates to remember • Who is your representative 2 2 The Texas chapter of the Council on American-‐Islamic Relations (CAIR-‐TX) has compiled some resources to help inform community members when they vote in the November 2014 elections. Enclosed are Texas School of Education, State Representatives, State Senators, Lt. Governor race, Governor’s race, and Congressional representatives. Policy information gathered on candidates is strictly from the respective candidates official websites. Where such a website was not available, information was taken from interviews directly with candidates, or the candidates’ respective political party official websites (i.e. Democrat, Republican and Libertarian). The amount of information listed on candidates’ profiles is based strictly on the information provided on their official websites, or (where necessary), interviews/party websites. No opinion pieces, news articles, opinion polls or opponent sited facts/opinions were used on the candidates’ profiles. No candidate profiles were made for unopposed positions. CAIR’s aim is to provide unbiased, bipartisan information on key candidates running in the November 2014 election cycle. While CAIR’s aim is to assist the voter with non-‐bias information, we encourage everyone to do his or her own research and to not rely solely on this brochure. If any information in our Election Voter Guide is found to be false or inaccurate, please contact us at (713) 838-‐2247 and we will make it our priority to correct any mistakes. 3 3 The Council on American-‐Islamic Relations is the largest American Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States. There is equal representation from each state in the Senate. It doesn't matter if the state is big or small, densely or sparsely populated, or where it is located. Senators are elected every 6 years. The elections are staggered so that both senators from a state are not elected at the same time. Only the Senate can approve or reject treaties and presidential nominations for government offices. The C onstitution states the qualifications for being a senator. To be a senator a person m ust be at least 30 years old, a U.S. citizen for at least 9 years, and have fulfilled the requirements for residency in the state that person wishes to represent” (http://www.congressforkids.net/Legislativebranch_senate.htm). What is a Representative? “Also referred to as a congressman or congresswoman, each representative is elected to a two-‐year term serving the people of a specific congressional district. Among other duties, representatives introduce bills and resolutions, offer amendments and serve on committees. The number of representatives with full voting rights is 435, a number set by Public Law 62-‐5 on August 8, 1911, and in effect since 1913. The number of representatives per state is proportionate to population. To be elected, a representative must be at least 25 years old, a United States citizen for at least seven years and an inhabitant of the state he or she represents” (http://www.house.gov/representatives). 7 7 US Congressional District in Texas 8 8 US Texas Senators Senator John Cornyn Senate Minority Whip Took Office: January 2002 Next Election: 2014 Party: Republican Senator Ted Cruz Junior Senator Took Office: January 2013 Next Election: 2019 Party: Republican 9 9 US Representatives District 1 Representative Louie Gohmert Took Office: January 2005 Next Election: 2014 Washington, DC Office 2243 Rayburn HOB Washington, DC 20515 (202) 225-3035 Tyler Office 1121 ESE Loop 323, Ste 206 Tyler, TX 75701 (903) 561-6349 District 2 Representative Ted Poe Took Office: January 2005 Next Election: 2014 Washington, DC Office 2412 Rayburn HOB Washington, DC 20515 (202) 225-6565 Harris County East 1801 Kingwood Dr, Ste 240 Kingwood, TX 77339 (281) 446-0242 Harris County West 710 N.
