In many ways though, this issue of Under the Umbrella
is about all the good that was harvested in 2014. We
are excited that The Leapfrog Group, the leading
healthcare quality organization, has recognized
Children’s Specialized for our clinical excellence and
efforts to improve our children’s lives.
We continue to explore new ways to use technology
to improve patient care, and as a way to improve a
parent’s experience as their child journeys through the
rehabilitative process.
Thanks to the strong volunteer leadership of our
Foundation Board of Trustees and countless Children’s
Miracle Network Hospital’s partners, we had great

committee to yet another record-setting year.
Children’s Specialized Hospital will host their ninth annual
Walk n’ Roll on Saturday, May 16 at Johnson Park in
Piscataway. Along with 2015 Honorary Walk n’ Roll Chairs, 95.5
WPLJ radio personalities, Todd Pettengill and Jayde Donovan,
thousands are expected to walk or roll to support children
living with special healthcare needs.
With this year’s event supporting inpatient programs at PSE&G
Children’s Specialized Hospital, the Walk n’ Roll is expected to
surpass last year’s record, breaking $265,000! This signature
event has grown tremendously over the years from only 400
participants its first year to over 2,100 in 2014.
“Our employees, vendors, and all of the PSE&G community fundraise
for Children’s Specialized throughout the year, and we all look
forward to the Walk n’ Roll,” said Hanemann. “We especially enjoy
meeting the patients and families that will benefit from our efforts.
Their enthusiasm makes our hard work worthwhile. We look forward

Children’s Specialized Named
“Top Children’s Hospital”
for Quality and Safety
In December 2014, Children’s Specialized Hospital was honored
to be named the first and only pediatric rehabilitation hospital to
The Leapfrog Group’s annual list of Top Hospitals. An elite
distinction awarded to hospitals nationwide for demonstrating
excellence in hospital safety and quality through the Leapfrog
Hospital Survey. The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is given to less
than seven percent of all eligible hospitals, making it even more
prestigious. Nationwide, 1,200 hospitals were eligible for the
designation and 94 received it, including nine children’s hospitals.

Specialized medical records, appointment history, prescription
information and more is right at my fingertips. If I need to see a
list of her prescribed medication or get a copy of medical records
for another physician appointment I can easily print, email or save
it right from the portal. I can just log in to the portal and view not
only my upcoming appointment, but past appointments including
discharge notes and follow up instructions. I can even pay my bill
safely and securely directly through the site. I am so thankful that

unique medical challenges. Children’s
Specialized Hospital Research Center’s
Distinguished Lecture Series is our
new research education program free
for healthcare professionals to hear
and meet world-renowned doctors
and research specialists on various topics and
studies affecting the healthcare industry today.
Children’s Specialized Hospital has executed the use of VGo,
a “telepresence healthcare solution.” VGo is a robot that
allows physicians to interact with their patients at any hour
of the day without physically being in the hospital. As the
only pediatric hospital in the state with a Daytona Retinal
Scanner, Children’s Specialized is able to provide advanced
care using this pioneering technology that captures images
of an infant’s retinas in the hospital and sends them to an
off-site specialist for analysis. We are the first pediatric
hospital in the country to acquire the innovative Redcord
apparatus, whose unique system of bungee cords and
a harness builds muscular strength and coordination by
training the brain in new patterns of muscular activation.
For two days, Children’s Specialized Hospital hosted
two of the area’s largest radio stations - 95.5 WPLJ and
94.7 NASH FM. The stations conducted two 14 hour
radiothons, raising money and spirits for the kids in our
inpatient hospital in New Brunswick. The events were
tremendously successful raising over $66,000! Read

2014 marked a year of launching new electronic
communications for families. The My Children’s Specialized
Patient and Family Portal was created to easily and safely
allow families to access patient information online. Our
Mountainside location also implemented electronic Tablet
Based Registration upon check-in helping families to have
a speedier and more efficient registration process. The
Kohl’s Autism Awareness Community Hub was created
and is the only one-stop, virtual hub for pediatric autism
resources. This virtual community contains resources for
children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), family

Grateful Patient
Dylan Klink
“Never, ever lose hope!”
Those are the tried and true words of parents David and
Dana Klink. Their oldest daughter, Dylan, now five-yearsold has benefitted from Children’s Specialized Hospital’s
services since she was 23-months-old. In May 2011, Dylan
was scheduled for an in-and-out surgical procedure.
What was supposed to be something relatively simple,
turned into one of the scariest moments of the Klink’s
lives. Unfortunately, something went terribly wrong
and Dylan experienced a stroke during surgery causing
hemiparesis, or weakness, on the right side of her body.
As a result, Dylan was partially paralyzed and could no
longer walk. At that time, doctors recommended that
Dylan be transferred to PSE&G Children’s Specialized
Hospital for inpatient rehabilitation services in order to
recover. David and Dana were fully aware their little girl
had a tough road ahead, but were certain Dylan had a
determined and unwavering spirit that would help her
through. For four weeks, Dylan worked hard at intensive
rehabilitation including physical therapy, occupational
therapy and speech therapy, with a primary focus on
independent walking and increasing right side awareness
and strength.
After a long month of hard work full of willpower, Dylan
was able to go home. She continued therapy as an
outpatient at one of Children’s Specialized Hospital’s
facilities in her hometown of Toms River. Dylan continues
to receive occupational therapy services today. With her
continued outpatient therapies, Dylan began to walk
again with the help of leg braces and has made incredible
progress.
“Dylan came to us with little to no use of her right upper
extremity,” explains Dylan’s occupational therapist since
August 2011, Danielle McConnell, MS, OTR/L. “Being
as bright as she is, Dylan figured out how to complete
tasks using her left arm and legs as opposed to using
both hands. She was easily frustrated and had limited
compliance, but since then, Dylan has greatly matured
and is engaged in therapy and motivated to use her right
arm. She is able to activate her shoulder and elbow and
is beginning to have active motion in her wrist and hand.
She has even achieved successfully grasping on objects
using Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation.”

Dylan has also attended Children’s Specialized Hospital’s BECOME
Program; a camp that provides Constraint Induced Movement
Therapy (CIT) for up to six hours a day, five days a week, for three
weeks. CIT involves “constraining” the strong or unaffected arm
using a removable cast. This approach allows the child to only use
their affected or weaker arm during play activities. Dylan is now
able to use her right hand to assist when holding a large object
and she is able to jump and run.
Big sister to 2 ½ year-old twin sisters, Dani and Devin, it’s no secret
Dylan challenges herself to be the best she can be. Her strongwilled personality and desire to do things better and faster has
given her the drive to succeed and improve her motor skills. Dylan
is now “able to incorporate her right upper extremity into play
tasks, including holding the handles of her tricycle or pogo stick,”
says McConnell.
Dylan is doing well in school, especially enjoying art and reading.
She also loves being active outside any chance she gets. Though
with a lot to celebrate, Dylan is greatly looking forward to an
indoor pool party for her upcoming sixth birthday in May!
“I attribute much of Dylan’s success to family involvement in
sessions and carryover at home,” explains McConnell. “It has
been an absolute pleasure to work with Dylan and her family!”

Last year, Dylan was also named Children’s Specialized Hospital’s
2014 Children’s Miracle Network Hospital’s Champion. Dylan
blossomed during her Champion year attending many events to
share her success story on behalf of Children’s Specialized and
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
Despite going through unimaginable circumstances no parents
want to experience, David and Dana recommend for families
to “embrace the experience of being a part of the Children’s
Specialized Hospital family. No one ever hopes to be in this type
of situation, but if you find yourself there, you can find comfort
that you are being cared for at Children’s Specialized Hospital.”

The holiday season celebrations for our kids are always fun and
festive. In 2014, we surprised everyone by hosting a two day
concert and radiothon with two of the New York metro area’s
largest radio stations - 95.5 WPLJ and 94.7 NASH FM.
For two days, our patients, families, staff, trustees, and volunteers
enjoyed private concerts and a front row view of famous musicians
including American Authors, best known for their hit, “Best Day of
our Lives” and Ryan Cabrera, best known for “On the Way Down.”
In addition to country stars Casey James from American Idol, The
Swon Brothers and RaeLynn from NBC’s The Voice, and John King!
Not only did the kids get to rock out and celebrate the holidays
with some major recording artists, the morning show personalities
from both stations broadcasted live from the auditoriums on

On Friday, NASH FM brought in “America’s Morning Show” from
Nashville with Blair Garner, Terri Clark and Chuck Wicks. The
show, which is traditionally syndicated nationally, was broadcast
to the NY/NJ area and the on-air personalities flew in to be a part
of this monumental event. NASH continued to broadcast live from
the lobby with Kelly Ford and Jessie Addie, who also interviewed
patients and families.
Not only did we create once in a lifetime experiences for our
patients and families, this was a fundraiser. Over two days,
we raised over $66,000 for the kids at Children’s Specialized
Hospital! Mark Montenero, president of Autoland in Springfield
and foundation trustee, got everyone in the holiday spirit by
generously donating $20,000!

It’s a plane... It’s Dr. Oz!

On October 27, 2014, Dr. Mehmet Oz swapped his usual doctor
scrubs for an exciting super hero costume. Dr. Oz and grimefighting window washers, Julian and Alex, transformed into
Superman, Spiderman, and Batman before they propelled down
the side of PSE&G Children’s Specialized Hospital as special
window washers. The popular super heroes happily surprised
inpatients as some of their favorite super heroes coming for a
visit!
Their mission was quite simple: bring smiles to even the smallest
of heroes recovering from traumatic injuries and illnesses.
After they cleaned and scrubbed the windows, the three
caped crusaders arm wrestled and chatted with patients about
their own super powers, like growing big and strong. Washing
windows aside, Dr. Oz and friends truly bonded with the patients
providing them with an unforgettable experience and memories
to last a lifetime. A nearly 5-minute segment of the visit aired on
Dr. Oz’s November 4th episode with 5 million viewers tuning in!

Annual Umbrella Gala Guests treated to
a “Culinary Clash”
Children’s Specialized Hospital Foundation hosted its 27th
Umbrella Gala at the New Jersey Expo and Convention Center, in
Edison on October 22, 2014. Guests were wowed by the “Culinary
Clash” themed celebration while they enjoyed and voted for
gourmet meals, prepared by two competing chefs.
Over 275 guests filled the room and helped raise an outstanding
$255,000 net. The money raised will support the Children's
Specialized Hospital research program. The research will focus
on finding ways to advance care, and establish evidence-based
practices, for treating children with a variety of complex medical
conditions.
Led by gala committee chair, Amanda Harrison, the committee
would like to extend special appreciation to the event’s major
sponsors L’Oréal USA, C.R. Bard, Inc., Robert Wood Johnson
Health System, BASF and PSE&G.
The gala committee selected Kohl’s Associates in Action (AIA) as
the 2014 honoree. Kohl’s volunteer program, AIA, has participated
in a number of community activities in the central Jersey area for
families involved with Children’s Specialized; such as sponsoring
activities at a minor league baseball game with the Somerset
Art Esposito; Stella Matteace-Esposito, Children’s Specialized Hospital
Foundation board member; Amanda Harrison, Umbrella Gala Chair; and
Michael Harrison, Children’s Specialized Hospital Foundation board
member.
Gala attendees were also touched by the heartwarming success
story of a family served by Children’s Specialized. Lori Velasco and
her son, Matthew, shared their experience of the quality care they
received while at the hospital after they were involved in a 2007
car accident. Matthew, age seven at the time of the accident, had
sustained a traumatic brain injury.
“After the accident, Matthew was taken to a trauma center,
where we spent 10 to 12 days,” explained Lori. “Our journey with
Children’s Specialized began with six weeks of inpatient rehab
before he was discharged. He received cognitive rehab, physical
and occupational therapy and neurological rehab. He missed all of
second grade.” With the help of the services he received at
Children’s Specialized, Matthew has made a full recovery
and is now thriving.

more than $5.1 million to Children’s Specialized; Kohl’s’ pledge
to Children’s Specialized Hospital Foundation is made possible in
part through the Kohl’s Cares cause merchandise program selling
$5 books and plush toys, with 100 percent of net profit benefiting
children’s health and education programs nationwide, including
hospital partnerships, such as with Children’s Specialized.

attendees had the opportunity to text and vote on their favorite

Volunteers Help Make Community
Recreation Programs A Success
For over 10 years, Children’s Specialized Hospital’s community
recreation program, part of the Recreational Therapy/Child Life
Department, provides opportunities for children living with
disabilities and special health needs to participate in recreation
programs that best meet their development and skill level.
The community recreation programs, such as the adaptive
aquatics and martial arts programs, provide a continuum of
rehabilitative services as many children enrolled carry over
therapeutic goals. Such goals may include maintaining range
of motion, improving strength, coordination, and endurance,
as well as practicing social skills in a natural environment.
Specifically, the adaptive aquatics program, offered at the
Mountainside and New Brunswick sites to children ages 3-10,
utilizes Children’s Specialized recreational therapists with
certifications in Water Safety Instruction along with dedicated
volunteers known as “buddies.” These volunteers are integral

instruction from experts in Karate & Jiu Jitsu. Recreational
therapists provide extra support to instructors & participants

Join the Children’s Specialized Friends at “A Literary Luncheon”
FRIENDS
The Children’s Specialized Hospital Friends invite everyone to attend “A
Literary Luncheon” on April 30th at the Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit,
NJ beginning at 11 a.m. All are welcome to attend. Consider becoming a
“Star” by sponsoring the program book; sponsorship levels from $50 - $1,000

with any questions. “A Literary Luncheon” will support Children’s Specialized
Hospital’s Friday Night Fever Program, a monthly social and recreational
program for teens with disabilities providing opportunities for teens to make
friends, socialize, participate in activities, access a variety of community
facilities, and just be a teenager!

Extra Life Gaming Marathon
Last Fall, 742 people pledged
to play games for 24 hours
for Children's Specialized
Hospital as part of Extra
Life, a gaming marathon
and fundraising program
organized through Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. In
2014, Extra Life gamers raised an incredible
$116,876 for Children’s Specialized Hospital, a
101% increase over 2013!
Some incredible highlights from 2014 included establishing an
Extra Life Guild to connect gamers and boost recruitment for
the marathon, an official resolution passed by the NJ Legislature
recognizing Extra Life participants in NJ, outstanding fundraising,
and a chance to have our highest individual fundraiser, Tym, at the
first-ever Extra Life United tournament in Orlando!
An extra special thank you to our top fundraising teams, Shack
News and PS Nation, and our Guild members for all of their
dedication!

Rutgers Sigma Chi Derby Days
Rutgers University's Sigma Chi fraternity and seven sororities
raised $185,000 for charity during their annual Derby Days
last November. The brothers of Sigma Chi at Rutgers hosted a
week of activities including field day games, a Family Feud quiz
night, a brotherhood date auction, and the ever-popular lip sync!

Dance Marathons
This year was a big year for our Dance Marathon programs; we
added two successful collegiate programs at Kean University and
Montclair State University and saw a 249% increase in
fundraising. Thousands of supporters came together at J.P.
Stevens High School, Kean University, Georgian Court University,
The Stand; NYC Dance Marathon, Montclair State University, and
Ramapo College to dance for kids who can’t and raise money
for Children’s Specialized Hospital through Children’s Miracle
Network Hospitals! We look forward to adding another collegiate
