SUMMER 2016
JOHN MCCUSKER
“One of the UK’s most gifted and versatile
musicians in any genre, John McCusker
is equally in demand as a multiinstrumentalist, producer and composer.”
~ The Guardian
While emerging via the folk scene, John
has long been renowned for his skill at
transcending musical boundaries. As a live
and studio guest he has shared stages with
Bonnie Raitt, Steve Earle, Paolo Nutini and
Jools Holland, and featured on recordings
by Mark Knopfler, Paul Weller and Ocean
Colour Scene.
DARIUS BRUBECK QUARTET
The Darius Brubeck Quartet live in concert, featuring Darius Brubeck (piano),
Dave O’Higgins (saxes), Matt Ridley (bass), and Wesley Gibbens (drums).
The Darius Brubeck Quartet will take you on jazz journey to distant places
and different eras. While Darius is best known for representing his famous
father’s musical legacy and for pioneering jazz education in South Africa,
he has always performed his own compositions too. The group will enter
the studio in February to record a new album after the critical and popular
success of their previous release, Cathy’s Summer.
Throughout his life, Darius has been inspired by travel and the musical
influences from many far flung places: the beat of Brazil, the direct
emotion of South African jazz, the improvisation and rhythm of Asian
musics, and the lyricism and harmony of the European tradition. The
quartet always plays a mixture of original music, jazz standards, Dave
Brubeck hits and South African jazz.
Don’t miss this brilliant evening of exciting and eclectic jazz.
John has been a member of Mark
Knopfler’s band since 2008, playing arenas
around the world. In 2013 John performed
as a soloist with the Royal Scottish National
Orchestra at Proms In The Park, playing
his own compositions live on TV. 2016
will see John celebrate 25 years as a
professional musician, publishing a book of
compositions, releasing a new solo record,
and embarking on an extensive tour.
His band features some of the finest
traditional musicians and singers in the
UK; Andy Cutting, Adam Holmes, Innes
White, and Toby Shaer.

Ropetackle Film Club Presents:
A DRY WHITE SEASON
Schoolteacher Ben du Toit (Donald Sutherland) has been
insulated all his life from the horrors of apartheid in
his native South Africa. Perhaps he really didn’t want to
know. When the son of his black gardener is arrested and
beaten as a result of a schoolboy protest in Soweto, at
first he imagines the police must have had their reasons.
Five top calibre musicians
that have travelled the
world playing in front of
hundreds of thousands of
people, performing on TV
and numerous number #1
albums. These brothers in sound are the loyal musical backbone for Paul
Weller. The band will perform a selection of material from their own musical
projects. With a rotating ethic, the band will share centre mic and alternate
instruments to perform each other’s songs as part of the performance.
The line-up includes guitarist Steve Cradock – founding member of Ocean
Colour Scene and guitarist in The Specials, Andy Crofts – singer/songwriter
of The Moons, superb bassist Andy Lewis, plus drummers Steve Pilgrim and
Ben Gordelier.

SPECIAL
KATHRYN ROBERTS & SEAN LAKEMAN
‘Witty, lyrical and above all
insightful’ ~ The Guardian
Don’t miss this opportunity to see two of the British folk scene’s most
accomplished performers.
In this referendum special,
award-winning BBC
broadcaster and columnist Steve Richards draws back the curtains and
highlights the behind the scenes dramas leading up to this make or break
decision on Britain’s EU membership. He’ll explore the big Shakespearean
themes of betrayal and loyalty as the cabinet argue in public, and explain
what will happen if the UK votes to stay or leave. There’ll also be the latest
on the Jeremy Corbyn saga and of course plenty of fun and humour.
After 20 years on the British folk scene Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman
are names that have become synonymous with quality. Their live shows
are an eclectic and intimate experience, and their reputation has been
solidified having been voted ‘Best Duo’ in the Spiral Earth Awards 2015
and the BBC Folk Awards in 2013. Both come with an enviable folk music
pedigree. Yorkshire girl Kathryn is lauded as one of the finest singers of
her generation, while guitarist Sean is the eldest of three musical brothers,
Sam (married to Irish singer Cara Dillon) and Seth Lakeman.

This stunning film – based
on the remarkable collection
of 181 Renoirs at the Barnes
Foundation in Philadelphia –
examines the direction he then
took and why it provokes such extreme reactions right up to today. Some
claim they are repulsed by Renoir’s later works and some claim they are
seduced. What may surprise many is that among the many artists who
sought out Renoir’s new works and were clearly highly influenced by them,
were the two giants of the 20th century – Picasso and Matisse. The film is
a fresh new biography of this artistic giant but more than that it, uncovers
a rarely told story that places Renoir as a critical link between the old and
the new.
There are TWO performances, each with a different story focus. The 11am
performance will be Cecil’s Starlight Safari, and the 2pm performance will be Cecil’s
Magical Safari. Both follow the adventures of Cecil and Lesula.

JAZZ BREAKFAST
WITH MIKE
HATCHARD
June’s jazz breakfast sees Mike
joined by top trombonist and Syd
Lawrence Orchestra vocalist/
conductor Chris Dean. Famed
for his unique blend of humour,
smooth vocals and stunning musicianship, Chris never fails
to bring the house down at the Ropetackle and is always a huge
favourite. Alongside Chris, Mike will be joined on the drums by a man
many regard as Britain’s finest, the one and only Bobby Worth.
Pastries and cakes will be available to purchase.
Claude Monet was an avid
horticulturist and arguably the most
important painter of gardens in the
history of art, but he was not alone.
Great artists from Van Gogh to Pissarro to Matisse all saw the garden as a
powerful subject for their art. This is an immersive film based on the sellout show at the Royal Academy. From the exhibition walls to the beauty of
artists’ gardens, this film takes a magical and widely travelled journey to
discover how different artists built and cultivated modern gardens to explore
expressive motifs, abstract colour, decorative design and utopian ideas.

film uses the exhibition to look in depth at Goya’s fascinating and eventful life.
Through extensive location footage, Goya’s revealing letters and a unique

AFRICAN NIGHT FEVER PRESENTS:
SONA JOBARTEH
Sona Jobarteh is the first female kora virtuoso to come from a West
African griot family. Breaking away from tradition, she is a modern day
pioneer in an ancient, male-dominated tradition. Sona has modernised
the presentation of kora music through a rhythmic edge that perfectly
complements her remarkable singing.
The band will be playing classic songs from the Bonzos repertoire, popular
favourites from the Bill Posters back catalogue, and brand new material
to create an exciting musical slant on the wild and zany shows that made
both bands so popular over the years.
The kora is a 21 stringed African harp and one of the most important
instruments of West Africa. Having learned to play kora under the
tutorship of her father, Sona has also worked as a musician in the UK for
many years, receiving classical training from the Royal College Of Music.
She has also worked with internationally acclaimed artists including
Oumou Sangaré, Toumani Diabaté, Kasse Mady Diabaté and the BBC
Symphony Orchestra. Most recently, Sona’s vocals were featured in
Hollywood blockbuster Mandela.

Avery*Sunshine brings her vibrant,

HAYSEED DIXIE
Hayseed Dixie formed in the summer of 2000, deep in the heart of the
Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee, USA. In this area, which was
completely isolated from outside cultural and musical influence, the boys
grew up playing the traditional music of their forefathers on banjo, fiddle,
mandolin, acoustic guitar and acoustic bass.
All of this changed abruptly one afternoon when the boys discovered in the
wreckage of a car several vinyl AC/DC albums. After listening to the iconic
rock band, they all agreed the songs would be a perfect fit for country
music, and the rest is now enshrined in history.
Most recently, Hayseed Dixie have been exploring the inspired catalogue of
70s and 80s stadium rock. This interest began during their 2014 spring tour
of Germany, in which the band heard the song ‘Eye Of The Tiger’ 6 different
times on 6 different radio stations, in a single day! “As the seed is planted,
so the tree shall grow”– and in fact this very quote appears on the inner
sleeve of the 1980 album ‘Escape’ by Journey. How very true indeed.

LE VEND DU NORD
THE BARRA MACNEILS
Combining great stage presence with an energetic and dynamic flair,
Le Vent du Nord are one of the leading names in Québecois folk music,
performing original songs inspired from their tradition and producing a
truly fabulous sound! The quartet never fail to delight crowds with their
glorious mix of fiddle and foot-tapping guitar, accordion, piano, bass,
hurdy-gurdy and four part harmonies. The band play catchy songs and
tunes, some taken from the Québec traditional folk repertoire while others
are original compositions. Considered a driving force in progressive folk,
Le Vent du Nord captures the energy and mirth of a Saturday night kitchen
party, infusing old Québec with a breath of fresh, cosmopolitan air.
Canada’s Celtic ambassadors!
On stage Le Vend du Nord know how to deliver music that will move
any crowd – to their feet and in their hearts! Advance booking highly
recommended.

JAZZ BREAKFAST WITH
MIKE HATCHARD
SAMI STONE PRESENTS:
COMEDY SANS FRONTIERES
It’s the return of the man many regard
as Britain’s finest saxophonist, Alan
Barnes. Alan is not only a consummate
musician but an extremely funny guy, a
charming anecdotalist (if that’s a word) whose humour makes a simpatico
accompaniment to Mike’s natural zaniness. What a great way to start the
autumn series of our monthly jazz breakfasts.
A jam-packed friendly and cerebral evening featuring
a line-up of unique comedians, all raising funds for
Médecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders).
Pastries and cakes will be available to purchase.

GRAHAM PARKER
& BRINSLEY
SCHWARZ
Graham Parker has worked with
guitarist Brinsley Schwarz since
1975 when they first met and
rehearsed together in a band
that became known as Graham
Parker & The Rumour. Since then, Schwarz and Parker have regularly
worked together live and on record. Expect an evening of varied, creative
and exciting music in equal measure. Along with a relaxed atmosphere
and plenty of humour from Parker – with the aid of Brinsley’s virtuoso
musicianship – join this duo as they reinvent Parker’s prodigious catalogue.
Widely regarded the most exciting blues, soul
and roots artist to emerge in Europe for decades,
Jo Harman performs live at Ropetackle.
With support from Stephen Wilson Jnr.
With her 2013 debut album ‘Dirt On My Tongue’
receiving international critical acclaim,
Jo’s profile has continued to grow. She has
performed to over 300,000 people at Parkpop
festival in the Netherlands, and in May 2015 she
was headhunted by Amnesty International to
perform at their prestigious ‘Ambassador For
Conscience Awards’ alongside Joan Baez and
Patti Smith. Live, her soul fuelled show ranges from hard rock to intimate,
heart-warming ballads and features both her own emotive songwriting,
but also personal takes on well-known standards. Simply unmissable.
