Editor's choice
Barbara Walters
makes ‘Fascinating’ return
By Jay Bobbin
T
he prospect of another “Fascinating” round was too much
for Barbara Walters to resist.
Though she maintained the 2013 edition would be her last – as
a host, if not as a producer – the iconic television journalist,
who ended her regularly scheduled television work in May,
presents her choices for “The 10 Most Fascinating People of
2014” in a two-hour ABC special Sunday, Dec. 14.
As usual, the No. 1 pick won’t be revealed until the actual
broadcast, but several names on the list are known. They
include (alphabetically) Chelsea Handler, upcoming Oscar host
Neil Patrick Harris, Scarlett Johansson, Taylor Swift and Oprah
Winfrey ... and Walters appreciates having more time, in all
ways, to do the related interviews.
“I shouldn’t even be doing this,” she says, “but it does so well,
the network said, ‘Do one more year. It’s important to us.’ They
asked last spring, because even though it’s on in December, you
have to prepare for it and get the guests. And it’s a terrific list,
so here we are. And we’re happy about it.”
Walters admits not doing ABC’s “The View” on weekdays
“makes a big difference for me, so I can concentrate on this.
The interviews have gone very well; I had never met Neil
Patrick Harris, who was just adorable and easy to talk to. And
I was surprised that Oprah would do it. I’ve interviewed her
before, but this is brand-new.”
Moreover, this marks the first time Walters is getting two
full hours for “Fascinating People,” which she allows is “more
than we expected. It doesn’t mean extra work, it means that the
interviews are longer. It lets us get more in-depth, and they’ve
Page 2 YOUR TV LINK December 14, 2014-December 20, 2014
given us more time because it’s been so successful ... but this
probably will be the last time I’ll do it.”
Early on, it was apparent Walters would not go quietly into
her phase of reduced activity. While she left “The View” at the
time ABC News named its New York headquarters for her and
threw her a lavish almost-farewell party, she was still landing
major interview “gets” ... specifically, the women at the heart of
the scandal involving now-former Los Angeles Clippers owner
Donald Sterling.
“Who knows?,” Walters reflects. “I had just said, ‘Oh, I’m not
doing “The View,” I have more time,’ but you don’t know what’s
going to happen tomorrow. I haven’t said, ‘This is the last time.’
I said ‘Goodbye’ when we had that big party, but here I am
again.”
Though she and longtime production partner Bill Geddie
– with whom she’s working again on “Most Fascinating People”
– no longer have direct involvement in “The View,” Walters still
watches it and notes “it’s not the same show that I put on the air
17 years ago, but things change. Whoopi (Goldberg) still seems
to be happy doing it, and I’m glad about that.”
And when it comes to the building that now bears her name,
Walters is nothing if not modest. “I don’t even know where it
is!,” she claims. “There’s a plaque somewhere on the side of it. I
should go polish it.”

of ‘State of Affairs’ on NBC
of ‘The Librarians’ on TNT
What sort of research have you done for your
CIA-analyst role in “State of Affairs”?
There was a lot of getting to just talk to Rodney
(Faraon, an executive producer of the series)
and hear all these incredible stories about his
experience as a (presidential) briefer, and having
him on set so that when the team and I were
doing these scenes and kind of trying to set it
up as realistically as possible, we could turn to
Rodney and say, “How would they handle this
particular situation? Would they be just chilling
in the offices like this, first thing in the morning,
singing and hanging out and decompressing?”
We get to have a real, live ex-briefer tell us
“yea” or “nay” – which has been fantastic.
What’s the appeal for you in working on both
sides of the camera with this show?
I have the opportunity to not only perform in
it but executive-produce it ... and I’m not sure
why I feel this way, but acting and performing
has always felt a bit more like kid’s play to me,
because it’s something I’ve always loved. I love
the opportunity to tell stories and be imaginative,
and the executive-producing angle of it feels
more like a grown-up job.
You seemed to step back from your career for
a while. What was the reason for that?
I felt that I was sort of letting down my audience
... that I wasn’t challenging them, either. I think
(that’s what) this opportunity is, and I think a
lot of people want to know, “Why this show?
Why come back to television?” Because it’s
an extraordinary role, and it’s an extraordinary
opportunity, and it’s an extraordinary story.
What drew you to “The Librarians”?
Well at first it was just the genre. I was a
huge Indiana Jones fan growing up and
I wasn’t familiar with “The Librarian”
movies. And then when I saw them and
realized the comedy we were going for,
I fell even more in love with it because
as soon as I started talking to Noah Wyle
about it – according to Noah Wyle, it’s
Indiana Jones if Indiana Jones is played
by Don Knotts. Which I loved. I love
comedy and I love that genre and so
combining the two, it was a no-brainer.
And Eve Baird, the character I get to
play, is sort of the straight man, which
to me is often the funniest character to
play.
You have ample fight scenes in
“The Librarians.” Did you have any
training? Did you do your own stunts?
Well you know, I did all my own stunts.
I had an amazing stunt double, which
we always have to have for insurance
purposes, and she’s actually been my
stunt double on many shows that I’ve
worked on. She’s awesome. But I did
all my own fight scenes. Last season,
I did a show for TNT called “King
& Maxwell,” where I played a Secret
Service agent, and I had to do a lot of
weapons training and mixed martial arts
training for that. So I sort of used all
that training for this character (laughs).

takes viewers along on his ‘Taco Trip’
On your ABC series “The Taste,” is there a
level of anxiety that goes with the blind taste
test?
It gets nerve-racking because you don’t want to
lose a good cook and then also you don’t want
to bite too early, and it’s all strategy. And I just
try to not overthink it. This year is like, ‘A great
bite is a great bite.’ And last year I was like ‘Is
this a home cook? Is this a professional chef?’
At the end of the day it doesn’t matter. It’s a
bite. So it definitely was good this year with the
fact that I had one year under my belt, the fact
that I’m not overthinking it, is what I thought
about the most.
When you say overthink, do you mean
anticipating what you’re about to try?
Yeah. You think about, “Oh, is that a
professional chef? Is this a home cook?” You
can’t go into that stuff. It’s like, “Do you
respond to that bite or not?” That’s really the
key. And if you do respond to it, then you
should just pick that contestant. At this point,
food has become more democratic. The home
cook knows just as much as the professional
chef today about ingredients and where to
get it. So I think we’re definitely onto a more
democratic way of cooking.
Would you say the quality of the food this
year is better?
Oh, amazing. Amazing. I feel like (the
contestants) watch the show and said, “I’m
going to be on that show and I’m going to cook
my heart out.” That’s what happened this year.

The taco, to Aarón Sánchez, is truly the
people’s food, transcending backgrounds,
cultures and income levels. So it’s no surprise
it’s at the heart of his new Cooking Channel
series “Taco Trip.”
“Everybody gravitates toward the taco,”
he says. “And it’s something that you can
have at any point in the day. You can have it
breakfast, lunch, late night – whatever it is.
The combinations are endless.”
In the half-hour series, which premieres
Tuesday, Dec. 16, the chef and restaurateur
takes viewers across the country to explore
various cities’ local taco scenes, meeting the
families and individuals who help define
them. The opening episode takes Sánchez
to Chicago, which he notes is home to the
country’s fifth largest Latino community.
“We stopped at this place called Carnitas
Uraupan,” he says. “You know, the carnitas
has become this sort of iconic, very
recognized taco and a lot of people, I don’t
think, know a lot about it and how you
make it. ... But we went to this one taqueria
in one of the places that really represents
Latino culture in Chicago ... and the idea of
them cooking one dish – that’s all they do:
one taco. And imagine being there 40 years
and hanging your hat on one thing. And I
just found that so, so impressive, and I just
thought it was awesome. People don’t do that
stuff anymore.”
The series also stops in San Francisco,
Portland (Ore.), Nashville, Philadelphia and
New Orleans, where Sánchez gets an eyeful
of the different local variations on the humble
taco. But for him it still comes down to core
ingredients.
“The main elements, for me, are the tortilla,
the protein – whatever the filling – and
the salsa/garnish,” he says. “If those three
elements are jibing, then you’re going to have
a perfect taco.”

What book are you currently reading?
“Right now, I’m reading ... M.F.K. Fisher’s biography. It’s a beautiful book. ... She’s
sort of like a grande dame of food writing, and she really sort of talked about food in a
very poetic manner and really influenced a lot of chefs.”
What did you have for dinner last night?
“We had tomatillo chilaquiles ... some red chilaquiles, kind of like a red chili-based
salsa with some braised chicken.”
What is your next project?
“We’re going to be opening up another Johnny Sánchez (restaurant) in Nashville next
year. ... I’ll be opening up a new restaurant in New York, it looks like, in the winter.
So I’m going to be doing a restaurant that’s going to celebrate my mom’s and my
grandmother’s food and my food, kind of like a little love letter to the way I grew up. So
I’ll be doing that restaurant on the Lower East Side and then another one in Nashville
come next year.”

Guy Fieri is an American restaurateur, author, game host, and television personality.
Many actors will tell you that to create a character, one must find
common ground with it.
But Lindy Booth, who plays a woman with cross-wired senses on
TNT’s Sunday sci-fi/drama/comedy “The Librarians,” obviously had
to take another approach.
“The thing I latched onto was a bit like a funhouse,” says Booth,
who plays synesthete Cassandra on the hourlong series, which airs
on the same night on Space in her native Canada, “like inside her
brain is like working in a funhouse, like too many lights, too many
sounds, too many smells, too many people jostling you, and I just
took that as like how every thought for her was sort of that sensory
overload.”
“And I’m not great in crowds,” she continues, “so to me that is like
an ultimate freak out. So when we were talking about how she feels
totally overstimulated when this starts to really kick in, that’s sort of
what I drew from, sort of my experiences in crowded places where
you couldn’t know what was going on. That’s sort of what her
world and her thought process became like for me, which was easy
because I could sort of relate to that growing sort of frenzy.”
Booth, 35, immediately recognized the potential in playing a
woman who sees numbers as colors, hears science as music
and smells breakfast foods when she does math. She read up on
the condition, did research on the Internet and even talked to
synesthetes. The learning curve was enormous.
“It is so much more difficult to play a character that is that much
smarter than you are ...,” Booth says, laughing. “When you have
to sit down and Google every other word and understand (arcane
concepts) just to make it through your first line, it added a whole
other layer of research and work that I was having to do, not just at
the beginning but on a daily basis.”

Kix Brooks is a featured
presenter in the “American
Country Countdown Awards”
Monday on Fox.
By Jay Bobbin
B
rooks & Dunn have been apart professionally for
more than four years, but that doesn’t mean they
aren’t keeping up with country music.
In Kix Brooks’ case, he’s doing that visibly – and audibly
– as host of the weekly, syndicated “American Country
Countdown” radio program. Aired since 1973, that show
now has a spinoff event: Fox televises the inaugural
“American Country Countdown Awards” on Monday, Dec.
15, from Nashville’s Music City Center.
Nominated for six of the honors themselves, the duo
Florida Georgia Line will host and perform at the ceremony,
and Brooks will preside over a “social bar” as celebrities
pass through. He’ll also present the NASH Icon Award to an
enduring country artist.
“I took on the hosting duties eight years ago,” the friendly
Brooks says of the radio show, “and I’ve gotten a little better
over the years, but I think the audience has cut me some
slack because I come from sort of a unique perspective.
I don’t think past countdown shows have been hosted by
somebody that’s actually been on tour with most of the acts
they interview. And if I haven’t toured with them, I know
what they’re going through.”
Other nominees including Luke Bryan (with seven bids),
Jason Aldean (with four), Brett Eldredge (two), Carrie
Underwood (one), Eric Church (one) and Miranda Lambert
(in the running for three, as is her husband, Blake Shelton)
also will perform on the program that bases its awards on
radio-airplay charts and statistics.
Page 10 YOUR TV LINK December 14, 2014-December 20, 2014
Set to receive the first-ever CMA Foundation Humanitarian
Award in January, Brooks appreciates extending his radio
venture’s brand while honoring the country-music industry
overall.
“I really do love our business,” he reflects, “and it’s fun
for me to be back in the middle of it. I think when you’re
a touring act, especially working at the level that Ronnie
(Dunn) and I did, you sort of take care of yourself. You get
focused on what you’re doing, and that’s a full-time job
and then some ... but before I met Ronnie, when I was just
writing songs, I got very involved in everybody who was
coming on the scene.
“You were constantly watching the charts to see who was
doing what, because that was important to you, so it’s fun at
this point in my career to have my cake and eat it, too. I get
to sit down with a lot of the young acts and find out where
they came from and sense the excitement they’re going
through.”
Brooks surely knows that excitement, given the 20-year
run he and Dunn had with such hits as “My Maria,” “Ain’t
Nothing ‘Bout You” and “Red Dirt Road.” Also factoring
in their shared awards that include two Grammys plus 16
ACM and 14 CMA wins as top vocal duo, the question of a
possible reunion lingers.
“There’s always talk,” Brooks says genially but
noncommittally, “as much talk about us reviving the duo
as there was about us breaking up. It just goes with the
territory. We didn’t say ‘When hell freezes over’ or any of
that stuff. We just needed a break.”

Bublé
brings
Christmas special back
to New York
By George Dickie
I
t was a totally organic moment that became a memorable one.
Michael Bublé and his band were warming up in a hallway backstage during taping of his 2013
NBC Christmas special in his hometown of Vancouver when a producer overheard it, loved it
and told him it should be in the show. The impromptu rendition of “Blue Christmas” became an
incredibly strong opening number.
“It’s funny, isn’t it?” says Bublé, who will host his fourth Christmas special when “Michael Bublé’s
Christmas in New York” airs Wednesday, Dec. 17, on NBC. “Sometimes you have all these great techniques
in miking and sound engineering and all of this, and then you just sit onstage with a bunch of guys and you
hold a microphone over everybody and just let them go. Sometimes the simple things work best.”
In fact, it worked so well that Bublé is making it a more prominent part of this year’s show, an unplugged
section in which the Canadian crooner and his band will perform requests from his social media followers.
As for the rest of the show, the hourlong special, which was taped at the iconic Radio City Music Hall in
October, features the multiple Grammy Award winner welcoming guests Barbra Streisand, Ariana Grande,
Miss Piggy and the Rockettes, with song selections including such holiday classics as “It’s Beginning to
Look a Lot Like Christmas,” “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
For Bublé, getting Streisand – a Grammy, Oscar, Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winner – was a
major coup.
“You can imagine ... the high-fiving that went on in my office,” Bublé says. “I think she told me that it
was 53 years or something that she’s never done anything like this, and it meant a lot to me. ... It meant that
she liked me as much as I like her, and I just have so much respect for her. She is someone who has never
compromised the integrity of her art, ever – ever – and including this special. And she doesn’t do it in a
heavy-handed, mean way. She’s just very honest and very real.”
Bublé was also impressed by Grande, the 21-year-old actress and singer best known for her role in
Nickelodeon’s “Sam & Cat” and her top 10 single “The Way.” Her vocal range has been compared to that of
Mariah Carey.
“Ariana Grande ... walked in and blew everyone away,” Bublé says. “Number one, her voice. I didn’t know.
I don’t know any more when I listen to music who’s for real and who’s not. There’s so much great work
done with production that they can turn pretty anybody into a singer. So when she walked up on stage – I
can speak for the boys in my band – we were all blown away. Up walks this girl, this tiny, little thing, and
she just killed us, she was so good.”

Full name: Darren Lee Sproles
Birth date: June 20, 1983
Birthplace: Waterloo, Iowa
College: Kansas State
Drafted: In the fourth round (130th
overall) by the San Diego Chargers
in 2005
Little Sproles a big factor for Eagles
By George dickie
At 5 feet 6 inches and 190 pounds, Darren Sproles would seem to be the unlikeliest workhorse for any football team
but he’s become just that for the playoff-bound Philadelphia Eagles.
At age 31, the diminutive running back/wide receiver/returner is having a banner year in his first season in the City of
Brotherly Love and is once again on course to have all-purpose yardage well over the 1,000-yard mark.
As of Week 11, the Iowa native had carried 38 times for 257 yards (a 6.8 yards-per-attempt average), caught 23 passes
for 280 yards (12.2 yards per reception), returned 24 punts for 398 yards (16.6 yards per return) and one kickoff for 15
yards. Plot his 950 all-purpose yards out over the course of a full season and that’s nearly 1,700 yards.
But his value to the Eagles goes beyond numbers. In a critical Week 10 game against the Carolina Panthers, Sproles
was largely responsible for breaking that game open in the first quarter by returning a punt 68 yards for a touchdown
and running eight yards for another score in leading Philly to a 45-21 victory. In the process, he became the first player
in NFL history to return a punt and rush for scores in a game’s opening period. He was also named NFC Special Teams
Player of the Week.
His talents will be particularly useful Sunday, Dec. 14, when the Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys with first place in
the NFC East on the line in a game airing on CBS.

“Dumb and Dumber To”
Carrey and Daniels are
‘Dumb and Dumber’
again, all right
When it takes a good number of years for a sequel to a movie to be
made, it can be interesting to see the result.
Then there’s “Dumb and Dumber To,” which is interesting for about
five minutes ... and even that is being charitable. That is not written
with glee, since the idea of getting Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back
together as legendary nitwits Lloyd and Harry after 20 years did really
have potential.
Both actors are that much more accomplished now – Carrey through
such other films as “The Truman Show” and “Eternal Sunshine of the
Spotless Mind,” and Daniels certainly through his Emmy-winning
work on “The Newsroom,” among many other credits – so there was
the chance for them to broaden the seemingly one-note “Dumb and
Dumber” concept.
The script, written by returning directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly
among others, even offers that opportunity: Harry needs a kidney
transplant, and that sends him on a search for the daughter he’s never
known – with Lloyd in tow, of course.
That wouldn’t be the proper framework for a parade of endless slapstick, right? Right?? Again, it takes only five minutes or
so to know what turf you’re on, which is that of the 1994 original all over again.
To those who will love seeing Carrey and Daniels stage very similar antics again, “Dumb and Dumber To” is critic-proof.
It’s impossible to think that viewers won’t know what they’re getting; if they didn’t see the first film, all they have to do is
look at any of the ads for this. Clearly, we are not talking about “The English Patient” here.
Kathleen Turner shows up as the birth mother of Harry’s daughter, who’s played by an engaging actress (and “Days of
Our Lives” alum) named Rachel Melvin – but this isn’t her movie. It belongs, of course, to Carrey and Daniels ... and while
we’re still used to seeing this brand of silliness from Carrey, seeing Daniels engage in it again at this point is just a bit
depressing.
Well, OK. More than a bit.
If the world demanded a “Dumb and Dumber To,” it’s gotten what it asked for. But please: When it comes to this franchise,
no more asking.

than youngsters who may not be as familiar with them now. Leonardo,
Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael are back on the streets of New York
to combat the latest nefarious plot by their enemy Shredder. Megan Fox
plays the turtles’ usual cohort, reporter April O’Neil, and Will Arnett and
Whoopi Goldberg also turn up. ››› e(PG-13: V) (Also on Blu-ray and
