Holiday Greetings from the Staff at CanCare O f the many thoughts that come to mind during the holidays, gifts are often at the top of the list. Some of the most important gifts CanCare receives are our trained volunteers. These individuals, who have faced cancer, overcome the challenge and want to give back to others, are at the heart of CanCare. As staff members, we meet many amazing people who look to CanCare for support, and it is our amazing volunteers who provide that needed encouragement. For those who support CanCare, and for the volunteers who are bringing hope to others every day, we are thankful. We wish you all a joyful holiday season. Her battle with cancer began in May 2011 when she experienced some pain in her hip after having two knee replacement surgeries. After several tests, she was informed that she had stage 4 ovarian cancer with metastasis to the liver. Jan had surgery to remove the cancer and started clinical trials. “At first I had no complications, but as the treatment progressed, I started having problems with my platelets and was hospitalized several times,” she shared. As she grew weaker and could no longer take care of herself, her daughter came from Alaska to help. “I had a great group of friends who took me to the cancer center each week. In addition to my daughter and two sons, these ladies were my angels,” she said. “After many complications, I was admitted to the ICU for a last-ditch effort. I have no idea what was done, but I felt like I was floating for several days and when I awoke, I was on the road to recovery. It seemed like a miracle.” For three months, she was cared for at a nursing facility, but then was able to move to Texas to be near her son. “When I arrived, I was still in a wheelchair, but my goal was to be independent again. Within three months, I attained it and was able to move to Lake Jackson to a senior living complex.” Jan learned about CanCare at a support group meeting she organized and decided to become a CanCare volunteer. She is currently supporting five people, and each person she supports has told her she gives them hope, information, privacy and strength. “But the road runs two directions,” she shares. “I receive so much in return. Just hearing the hope in someone’s voice when they say, ‘I’m so glad you called,’ lets me know why the mission of CanCare is so worthwhile.” Jan’s faith has been a big part of her recovery. She learned early on she had no real control over the cancer treatments and final outcome. She just needed to stay calm and have a positive attitude. Her motto is, “Always expect miracles.” As for her experience with CanCare, she says, “Just listen and learn what you need to do. Your clients will tell you what they need. Don’t be afraid to help them.” Besides her devotion to helping others with cancer, she enjoys art, reading, creative writing and time with her family. Jan Towers, CanCare volunteer Welcome CanCare Volunteer Class 68 C anCare facilitated our 68th volunteer training on October 2426, and we are excited to welcome 18 new volunteers to our CanCare family. We give special thanks to our hosts, The Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, Jennifer Berry, Amanda Guest, and Susan Savell, and to our lunch sponsor, Mr. Greg Davis. We would also like to thank our presenters, Dr. Rick Ngo, Reverend Mike Fry, Sherea Cary, Curt Hammock, Anita Bullers, Michael Wiesenthal, and CanCare trainers, Pat Hogan-Korge, Roy Davis, and Teresa Doyle, for making this training such an outstanding success. 4 ww w. ca n ca re . o rg Top L to R: Tommy Morrow, Robert Grizzard Middle L to R: Sunghie Na, Shanita Woodard, Chelsi Davis, Jackie Lewman, Camaron Thorson, Ana Love, Shirley Ebow, Pamela Miller, Rachel Herrera Front L to R: Sherry Ritcheson, Cory Thorson, Robert Irby, Jr., Nargis Malhotra, Linda Bergeron, Judy Sulak, (not pictured: Lee Boncher) New Partners Atlanta Oncology Associates S ince 1972, Atlanta Oncology Associates has specialized in the treatment of cancer to provide patients with the individualized attention they need. But when Roderick’s wife, Lynne, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2003, he found himself at a loss for people he could turn to for advice. “When Lynne was diagnosed, we had very few people that she could talk to that understood her situation,” Roderick said. At the suggestion of Jay Collins, former CEO of Oceaneering and past member of the CanCare Board of Directors, Roderick and Lynne reached out to CanCare in hopes of finding support in the wake of Lynne’s diagnosis. What they found far surpassed their expectations. As Roderick states, “We now know what a difference it makes to talk to a survivor, especially someone who has the same diagnosis, and is undergoing a similar treatment or is dealing with the same challenges in their work or home life. Everyone wants to know that there is hope – Lynne’s favorite word.” In the years following her diagnosis, Lynne went through two bone marrow transplants, three years of dialysis and, finally, a kidney transplant in 2012. Roderick and Lynne were matched in a six person exchange (3 donors/3 recipients) where Roderick was able to donate his kidney so that Lynne could receive one. Since the transplant, Lynne has remained in remission and dialysis free. Says Roderick, “Other than the obvious challenge of enduring all the rigorous treatments, Lynne has been a full-time mom, on good days and bad, with a very limited support structure (our family all lives out of state). She is my hero.” 6 ww w. ca n ca re . o rg Roderick Larson, his wife, Lynne, and their sons Jacob and Justin In 2013, Roderick joined the CanCare Board of Directors and is now a member of the Corporate Relations Committee. When asked about his experience with CanCare, Roderick states, “Every time I attend a CanCare meeting or event, I am overwhelmed by the caring nature and sincerity of the group and their dedication to cancer patients and their families. I am so grateful to know these people and be part of their cause.” When he’s not attending CanCare board meetings, Roderick loves to spend time with Lynne and their two boys, Jacob, 13, and Justin, 14. The family of four loves to cook and travel, and they believe that “prayer and the ability to give your struggles over to God are often what gets you through the toughest days.” KIND WORDS FROM A NEWLY TRAINED CANCARE VOLUNTEER “What a pleasure to meet you, and the training team from CanCare. It was a successful weekend for me; I gained and learned so much about not only how to care for and support cancer patients, but also about myself. I felt blessed to learn the skills you taught me, especially since I’m helping my niece in her battle against lymphoma. I can’t find words to tell you how grateful I am for the opportunity CanCare is giving me, and I am eager to start working with you in this wonderful ministry you do.” UPCOMING EVENTS Welcome to the Team Chelsi Davis C helsi joins CanCare after nearly two years working in the marketing department at Jackson Walker, LLP.
