Our mission is to assure the safety and resiliency of children by strengthening families and their communities. To treat and prevent child abuse, it is important that we not only address children who are at risk, but the often complex underlying issues and work with the whole family. For San Diego families in need, Home Start provides a community “safety net,” utilizing evidence-based services, support and healing during times of great challenge. Compassionate professional services provided by our trained staff can help re-shape a negative cycle and establish a positive pattern in its place. When families live in a safe and nurturing environment, children feel secure and parents are more hopeful for their future. This is how we help families when they need it most — encouraging our clients and empowering children to strive for a healthy and promising future. This report summarizes the life-changing outcomes provided by Home Start in 2015 and highlights the array of programs provided by our staff and volunteers. Our shared success is possible through generous funding from government agencies, foundations, corporate partners and individuals. Tancredi-Baese, LCSW Home Start, Chief Executive Officer Robin Robin Traylor Home Start, Board President www.home-start.org ✪ empoweringkids OUR PROGRAMS 723 families received in-home parenting education and case management services COMMUNITY SERVICES FOR FAMILIES (CSF) The goal of CSF is to promote child safety, child well-being and stable living environments for children. ✪ Home-based parent education and case management services Linking families with community resources ✪ Community-based parent education classes ✪ Parent Partners - a peer support program for parents involved with ✪ Child Welfare Services Priority is given to families who are currently involved with Child Welfare Services. CSF services are free of charge and are offered in several regions of the County by Home Start and partner agencies. MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS Home Start, Inc. (HSI) Counseling Center With sensitivity to the needs of each individual and family we serve, our professional counselors offer therapeutic services to promote healing, personal growth, healthy interpersonal relationships, and positive life transitions. Through all of Home Start’s Mental Health Programs: 390 children received therapy Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) PCIT is an evidence-based best practice supported by more than 30 years of research. Through an earpiece, specially trained therapists coach parents/caregivers as they interact with their child. Parents/caregivers learn relationship enhancing skills and parenting techniques for improving their child’s behavior. 326 calls received to the information and referral line Child Abuse Treatment Program (CHAT) This program is specifically designed to provide therapy to youth 17 years of age and younger who have been victims of abuse. Crime Victims Counseling Service (VOC) VOC provides adults, youth and families long-term trauma treatment for victims of crime. “We just want to say thank you for all your help with this hard situation… you made us very calm… you taught us a lot how to be great parents.” — a mother and father helped through our CSF Program 6,895 individuals received outreach and education regarding Covered California and medical programs 1,189 individuals received application assistance 474 individual renewals and enrollments were completed COVERED CALIFORNIA NAVIGATOR PROGRAM Provides services to individuals and families who lack adequate health insurance. Regular health care is important for a child’s well-being and physical development. We help families access public health insurance which is available at little to no-cost: ✪ Medi-Cal: no-cost comprehensive health, dental and vision coverage for children and pregnant women ✪ Access for Infants and Mothers (AIM): health insurance for uninsured pregnant women who are not eligible for Medi-Cal ✪ Covered California enrollment assistance for individuals and families Funded in part by First 5 San Diego www.home-start.org ✪ empoweringkids 35 40 homeless young women received housing and supportive services homeless children received housing and supportive services MATERNITY SHELTER PROGRAM (MSP) The Maternity Shelter Program provides homeless women ages 18-24, who are pregnant or parenting, housing and supportive services. MSP offers these women a home and educational programs to give them the tools they will need to become self-sufficient and develop healthy relationships with their children. Home Start Thrift Boutique Our Thrift Boutique supports Home Start’s residential shelter program — a safe place that offers homeless young mothers renewed hope and an opportunity to build confidence, access programs and strengthen their families. The store also provides a supportive setting for these young mothers to develop job skills and gain work experience as they move toward greater independence. There are several ways you can get involved! www.home-start.org ✪ empoweringkids 385 active participants 107 individuals obtained employment FINANCIAL OPPORTUNITY CENTER (FOC) The FOC provides participants with the financial, employment and income support services for a three-year period through both one-on-one counseling and group workshops. By establishing long-term relationships, providing resources, and focusing on debt reduction and asset accumulation, the FOC improves the overall quality of life for families. 84 individuals improved their credit scores 105 individuals increased their net worth 83 individuals increased their net income “The family was struggling to the point that they had to choose whether to pay their utility bills or buy food… After our help, the mom was thrilled her children would be able to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables all month long.” — Angelica Gonzales, Team Leader FSS FAMILY SELF SUFFICIENCY SERVICES (FSS) 4,531 State and Federal returns prepared by Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites operated by Home Start s $4,695,312 in Federal refunds received by clients s $257,921 in State refunds received by clients s $2,490,170 in Earned Income Tax Credits received by clients 982 individuals obtained employment 3,902 individuals participated in nutrition education services 47 individuals received rental assistance ,073 8 individuals received case management services 34 families received shelter assistance FSS offers families a hand-up through a continuum of care to help move individuals and families towards self-sufficiency.
