In this profession, that would be equipment marketed as Class II devices. REGIONAL REP LIST Remember that I-ACT strongly recommends that all I-ACT members use FDA registered Class II devices or devices equivalent to Class II devices regulated by the appropriate agency in your country. However, should the Therapist use reusable speculums, these speculums should, at a minimum, be autoclaved for sanitation and cleanliness (30 minutes). Additionally, the autoclave unit must be tested and inspected by competent authority at least four times per year- maintain documentation. (Under NO conditions should a disposable speculum or rectal tube be reused). 34 “TOXIC BODY BURDEN” ARTICLE 36 NEW MEMBERS - 1ST QUARTER 2012 I-ACT recognizes there are two distinct types of colon irrigation systems; open and closed systems. However, it is I-ACT policy that the colon hydrotherapist / technician is always in attendance / or is immediately available to the client throughout the session. The degree of assistance is to be in compliance with the instructions of the manufacturer of the equipment as registered with the FDA, and/or as directed by a physician. The policy on insertion is to follow the instruction of the referring physician; the guidelines of the manufacturer as approved by the FDA; or the directives from the authority of your city, county, state, or country ordinances. I-ACT recommends that you do not put the initials (CT) for colon hydrotherapist after your name, write it out in full. According to most state laws, putting initials after your name is not allowed unless you are licensed or have a degree from an accredited professional school. Advertising copy which states or implies that colon hydrotherapy can treat any disease, promise cure for any disease, or that makes unsubstantiated medical claims SHALL NOT be used. Dorothy M Chandler, RN I-ACT President I-ACT Quarterly Spring 2012 3 National Board for Colon HydroTherapy President Bekki Medsker, ND, D.Ch. Reducing “Toxic Body Burden” by Gloria Gilbere - page 2 Continued from page 35 From The Desk Of: Bekki Medsker, ND, D.Ch. NBCHT President 3/23/2012 To: All Members of NBCHT It is Spring Time!!! A time for things to grow, and we are ready to help the NBCHT grow to even greater heights. Methodologies of Colon Hydrotherapy To grow, you must till the ground and plant the seeds then all you have to do is water and things grow... Well, the NBCHT Board has tilled the ground and are planting the seeds to help our association grow. We have reduced the NBCHT Registration fee to $250.00 (from $300) for all I-ACT Instructors that register for the NBCHT Exam before August 1, 2012. After that time, you can register for the NBCHT Exam for Next, the NBCHT Annual Membership meeting will be held on Thursday afternoon, June 21, 2012. Come to the meeting and let us know what we can do to help make the NBCHT better. - Sincerely, Bekki Medsker Bekki Medsker, ND, D.Ch. NBCHT President Professional colon hydrotherapy is an extended and more complete form of an enema—gently infusing warm, filtered water into the rectum. The benefits of colon hydrotherapy in reduction of the overall body burden are achieved through its ultimate results of: Hydrating and cleansing the colon through repeated fills and releases during a session; Softening and loosening accumulated waste; Facilitating evacuation through normal peristalsis (rectal muscle movement). What Constitutes Approved Colon Hydrotherapy? by I-ACT at the Intermediate level. For all others, the registration fee remains at $300.00. Thank you for helping us grow our Association. to colon health and overall health. It indicates the amount of time between ingesting food and when the remains are eliminated. A healthy bowel transit time (8–14 hours) reduces toxin absorption, bloating, gas, indigestion, parasite infection, and the chances of disease development in the colon that respectively compromises other immune functions especially the liver and the lymphatics. The good news . . . there are steps you can take to put your colon health back in balance—steps to help maintain healthy bowel function, begin feeling better, and gracefully aging without looking or feeling old. One of the best ways to achieve wellness is with an all natural colon fiber cleanse and colon irrigation, called Colonics or Colon Hydrotherapy. Colonics should be performed by a certified therapist who has met the requirements of The National Board for Colon Hydrotherapy (NBCHT). These qualified professionals use only FDA approved Class II equipment with all disposable tubing and speculums and meet criteria set forth by the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapy (IACT). A Class II device requires a physician, or state defined individual, to purchase the equipment. Use of modern FDA registered equipment with all disposable tubing and speculums (rectal tubes); Therapy performed by a qualified, certified colon health professional; Cleansing of the colon beyond the recto sigmoid area through a series of fills and empty cycles (water in, water out); The client’s privacy and dignity maintained at all times. Locating a Qualified Therapist As a natural health practitioner and recovered victim of a serious digestive disorder, I recommend you seek the services of an I-ACT certified colon hydrotherapist using registered FDA equipment, disposable supplies, and filtered water. The I-ACT website lists all certified therapists around the world on their website at www.i-act.org. It’s important to clarify that I-ACT regulations, in compliance with the FDA, does not allow colon hydrotherapists to diagnose, treat or prescribe unless specifically licensed to do so within their educational scope of practice and within their state or country. What’s a Colon Hydrotherapy Session Like? It’s a comfortable discrete experience. Usually minor discomfort arises when the individuals toxic burden is extremely high as 4 I-ACT Quarterly Spring 2012 was the case for me during my leaky gut and the resulting multiple allergic responses from a damaged liver. My throat closed in anaphylactic responses several times a day as a result of my body pouring toxins into the organs of detoxification, specifically the liver, faster than my body’s ability to neutralize them. As soon as I experienced the first release of toxic matter in my hydrotherapy session, my throat returned to normal. Yes, many times I experienced some gas and bloating after the therapy . . . but then . . . what do you expect when you’ve “stirred” the compost pile? After all, if you stir any compost after putrefaction, the action itself allows for escape of the gases created. During a session of colon hydrotherapy, the only clothing removed is from the waist down. You will be draped or in a gown to ensure modesty and discretion at all times. How Many Colon Hydrotherapy Sessions Are Needed? Every individual is unique. When I work with patients with chemically-induced immune system disorders (multiple chemical sensitivities, environmental illnesses, etc.) the considerations for frequency of therapy must take into consideration their acute allergic responses. Generally they begin with one therapy a week and often two to three if they are not eliminating on their own or their evacuations are not complete. During my much written about illness, I had to have as many as three therapies a week until my toxic burden was reduced significantly and my throat wasn’t closing daily. Thereafter, I continued with once a week and slowly spread it out until I did fine with once every 6–8 weeks until I regained my health. Now I have therapy at least once a month; more often if I’ve traveled extensively or been exposed to toxic substances. I-ACT Quarterly Spring 2012 37 Healthy Recipes Advertisement Dr. Kolbo’s Basic Green Smoothie 1 cup pure water or hemp milk or ½ cup of each ½ cup frozen mango 1/3 banana 1 cup leafy greens like spinach, lettuce, Kale, chard, collards, etc. 1 teaspoon Sweet Life, ½ teaspoon Stevia or 1 tablespoon Agave Place all ingredients into a high-speed blender (BlendTec or VitaMix) and blend until smooth. Serving size – 1 – 16 ounce glass. Dr. Kolbo’s Power Snack Cookie This recipe is packed with incredible power morsels of nutrition. Included are nuts, seeds, oats, dried fruit, coconut oil, rice flour, coconut flour and Nature’s Agave (only 17 on the glycemic index). Dr. Kolbo loves them! Ingredients: 1 Cup Organic Almond Butter (or organic cashew butter, organic peanut butter or a combination thereof.) 1/3 Cup coconut oil - melted 3/4 Cup Nature’s agave nectar 1/4 Cup almond milk, hemp milk or coconut milk 1Tablespoon vanilla or almond extract 1 Teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 Teaspoon cardamom or crushed anise seeds or other spices 1 Teaspoon sea salt Mix the above ingredients in a large bowl with an electric hand mixer until blended. Set aside. In a smaller bowl mix the following ingredients: 4 Cups ground almonds (I used 2 Cups almonds and 2 Cups walnuts) You can use other nuts such as, brazil nuts, hazelnuts or pecans. 2/3 Cup brown rice flour 1/3 Cup coconut flour 1/2 Cup toasted oats 1/2 Cup toasted almond pieces Optional: 1/2 Cup raisins or dried cranberries Add this mixture to the mixture above and mix with a spoon. Place 2 – inch balls on a parchment – lined cookie sheet and flatten lightly with a fork (dip fork in cold water before pressing it on the cookie). Use a fairly low oven temperature. Bake at 300 – 325 degrees for 8 – 10 minutes; agave nectar browns a little faster than sugar, so keep your eye on your cookies and don’t let them get too dark on the bottom. Because we are not using eggs, a lightly “under baked” interior is wonderful! Enjoy! Mission: The I-ACT Marketing and Public Relations Committee is responsible for building awareness of and support for colon hydrotherapy as a profession as well as a valuable modality through global marketing, education, effective communications, and relationship building among its members and associates, the medical community and the general public. I would love it more if the membership volunteered for this committee. Many hands make work light! Awards Committee Report By Gail Naas Reducing “Toxic Body Burden” – Awards Committee NEW!!! A new award category has been created! It is the Connie Allred Founders award! It was created to acknowledge people that are a service to our industry. Unlike the other awards, this award can be granted to people outside of I-ACT as well as our members! The Connie Allred Award shall be awarded on the basis of: b. Outstanding service to the profession and I-ACT, with emphasis on the immediate year c. Award could be awarded for the following reasons, but not limited to such: integrity in his/her work b) Raising visibility, awareness, and appreciation of profession, or association at large. c) Community service record d) Particular services to the State of Nation Four types of awards will be given: *Colon Therapist of the Year Award, *Educator of the Year Award, * Connie Allred Founders Award, and *President’s Award In most cases, it takes decades of nutritional abuse before your immune system can no longer protect you, especially against autoimmune and inflammatory disorders and, of course, dreaded colon cancer. Those of you that follow my writing, and/or consult with me, know that I credit colon hydrotherapy for saving my life after developing leaky gut (auto intoxication) as a result of anti-inflammatory medications prescribed after a life-threatening accident as detailed in my bestselling book, I was Poisoned by my body. Questions continue to arise regarding the benefits of colon hydrotherapy; my goal in this article is to provide simple, factual information and dismiss misconceptions. Key Points . . . In 2009, Estimates by the American Cancer Society identified more than 106,000 cases of colon cancer and 40,000 cases of rectal cancer— only lung cancer kills more Americans; 90 percent of colorectal cancers are related to a poor diet; Toxins are in just about in everything in which we come into contact—the air we breathe, water we drink, food we eat, and through skin absorption; Our bodies were not engineered to neutralize substances from countless man-made chemicals, toxins, and pollutants—especially those made after WWII; Digestive and Inflammatory system diseases and disorders are the most common health issues today; A healthy colon produces Vitamins B and K, absorbs water and helps support healthy immune responses— most of our immune system is based in our gut. Historical Perspective . . . Colon Hydrotherapy, or the enema, was first recorded in ancient Egyptian documents. The great physician, Galen (131–201 D.D., advocated the use of colon irrigation. Many European kings and aristocrats used and benefited from colon irrigation. Louis XI credited the enema with relieving his attack of seizures and Louis XII for maintaining his overall health! Consider these U.S. Statistics . . . Over 100 million people (one third the population) have digestive disorders; 65 million have chronic heartburn; 58 million suffer from irritable bowel; 50 million are lactose intolerant; 5 million have chronic constipation that actually require a hospital visit. Please nominate members for the Colon Therapist, Educator and the Connie Allred Founder Awards. The President’s award is our President’s choice. We have so many deserving therapists that should be acknowledged for the work they do! To nominate someone, Nomination Form. Colon hydrotherapy gained the attention of James A. Wiltsie, MD, who contended that our knowledge of the normal and abnormal physiology of the colon, and of its pathology and management, has not kept pace with that of many organs and systems of the body. As long as we continue to assume that the colon will simply just take care of itself, just that long will we also remain in complete ignorance of perhaps the most important source of ill health in the whole body. Toxins are everywhere in our bodies. The best place to begin reducing our body’s overall toxic burden is to cleanse our colon—if the colon is full of colonic plaque, our immune responses are stagnated because it is now scientifically validated that over 80 percent of our immune system is based in our gut . . . that’s right . . . our gut! Everything we consume or absorb winds up in your colon— what your body doesn’t or can’t use remains as waste byproducts and toxins. In industrialized societies, individuals can have as much as 10–20 plus pounds of putrefied waste trapped in their colon, and as stated by the late Dr. Bernard Jensen, “death begins in the colon.” Understanding Bowel Transit Time Hippocrates claimed that chronic disease came from auto intoxication, including self-poisoning due to constipation. More recently, we know that auto intoxication is also caused by a condition medically known as intestinal permeability (leaky gut). When toxins overwhelm your large intestine, it protects itself by producing extra mucous. This gunk sticks to the sludge produced by a low fiber diet creating a build-up that narrows the colon and provides a perfect sticky breeding ground for health-depleting microorganisms—making your colon work less efficiently, and slowing down the time it takes to rid itself of fecal matter (bowel transit time). Bowel transit time is a key We will present the awards during the Saturday evening President’s Debra Christian accepting “Therapist of the Year Award” 6 I-ACT Quarterly Spring 2012 Continued on page 37 I-ACT Quarterly Spring 2012 35 Medical Health Advisory Committee Report The newly formed Medical Health Advisory Committee has sent a letter to all licensed medical healthcare providers soliciting their interest in participating on the MHAC. It was a beautiful day of warmth, connection and dialogue for what is happening and for what is to come. Most members are enthusiastic about the changes and look forward to an updated website. Troy, owner of Sustainable Business Coaching, gave a great talk on listening. It was met with a positive response. Beverley spoke about constipation and three things therapists could have their clients do to ease this problem. Her approach was from a body-centered perspective, bringing more awareness to both client and therapist in their relationship. Beverley and Anne Murphy presented a dialogue as therapist and client on taking out bundles of diet books, sensitive, leaky gut ……..on and on. This created much interaction between the therapists and a round table with everyone there involved. The key to this day was the amount of involvement, with everybody having the opportunity to share and be heard. Because of the success of this meeting, one therapist said she has renewed enthusiasm for I-ACT. She had no idea of the level of knowledge Beverley and the other presenters had, and that the awareness she gained was so encouraging. opportunity to get together for more training, education and fellowship like we shared today. Bowel transit time is a key We will present the awards during the Saturday evening President’s Debra Christian accepting “Therapist of the Year Award” 6 I-ACT Quarterly Spring 2012 Continued on page 37 I-ACT Quarterly Spring 2012 35 Healthy Recipes Advertisement 1 cup pure water or hemp milk or ½ cup of each ½ cup frozen mango 1/3 banana 1 cup leafy greens like spinach, lettuce, Kale, chard, collards, etc. 1 teaspoon Sweet Life, ½ teaspoon Stevia or 1 tablespoon Agave Place all ingredients into a high-speed blender (BlendTec or VitaMix) and blend until smooth. In this profession, that would be equipment marketed as Class II devices.
