Shona sculpture is perhaps the most
important new art form to emerge from
Africa this century. Within Zimbabwe and
abroad, stone sculpture has become the most
important expression of the country's
“national art.” Unlike most Western
sculpture, Zimbabwean artists directly
confront the stone by hand, without
sketching an outline on paper beforehand.
Their work is a determined advance toward
the heart of the stone, in search of the
perfect form contained within.
