job he did while here and wish him a rewarding and successful career.
At this time Lisa Sottana has stepped in to provide the leadership role of liaison
between the Board of Directors and the Department Heads. Lisa has always been
eager to help the Club in any way she can, and we are grateful that she is stepping
up to the plate until a new GM is hired. Alisa Hartman will be returning in early
August from maternity leave to resume her job of events coordinator. At that time
Tammy Gallentine, who has filled in valiantly for Alisa, will take the position of
website and marketing lead. Our new Controller, Susan Meader, in addition to her
many other duties, will oversee the computer hardware and software technology
needs of the Club.

Congratulations to several more Ace makers in the last
month and to Dan Bieber for qualifying for the US Senior Open
Championship for the second consecutive year. Dan will have
played at Sahalee CC near Seattle by the time you read this. Go Dan!
As for our Ace makers, hats off to Mike Leiser, who made TWO in
two days. Mike made his first ever at Green Valley (2nd overall) on
#7 on a Wednesday with the Seniors. He then turned around the next morning and
made one on #5. Absolutely amazing! And not to be forgotten, are two more June
Ace makers, Dick Cardosi on #7 and Ann Lavezzo on #16 at Spanish Bay. I have never
heard of so many Ace makers from one club. Keep up the incredible work!
Upcoming Tournament activities around the Club include a Niner Twilight on
the 6th, the Women’s Invitational on the 12th and 13th, Twilight golf on the 20th, the
Championship Flight Qualifying for the Men’s Club Championship on the 21st, East
Bay Ladies’ Team Play on the 17th, and the Seniors hosting Marin and Meadow Club on
the 25th. Early September also brings us the Seniors hosting Castlewood and Sequoyah
on the 1st, the USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur qualifying on the afternoon of the 2nd,
the Mr. and Mrs. Club Championship on the 5th , the Men’s Club Championship finals
on Labor Day the 6th, and our Final Twilight and Horserace on the 12th.
Lorie and I would like to give a special thank you to everyone for their support of
the 7th Annual and final Lucas Sherman Memorial Pro-Am, benefiting the Intensive
Care Nursery at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. We were able to generate
another $25,000+ in Lucas’ name to help the families and babies at John Muir. We
want to thank everyone for their incredible support over the past seven years as we
move in a different direction.
We are once again looking forward to the camaraderie, golf, margaritas, and
cervezas on the January Mexico trip at the Gran Bahia Tulum Resort in Cancun the
19th – 26th. We have had a good response to the trip, which should be another great
time for all.
With summer in full swing, the tournament calendar should be keeping everyone’s
game sharpened. If your game is not sharp, you know where to look for help.

President’s Message
Continued from page 1
Lastly, I would like to recognize the incredible deeds and accomplishments
of one of our members, Melody Van Ess. As you know, last year she provided the
leadership to bring us the Friday Happy Hour fun, to develop the very popular
big entertainment events, and to develop the fantastic notices and posters we see
at various locations at the Club, as well as on email. This year, she has not slowed
down a bit. She was elected to the Board of Directors, and was immediately made
the Treasurer. Since then, she volunteered to develop a whole new website (which
is nearly complete), revamp the budgeting process (in preparation for 2011), and has
developed a system for significantly reducing delinquencies. She works countless
hours for the Club, and it is impossible for me to keep her from volunteering for
new projects. I am sure she never sleeps. So, please join me in thanking Melody
for all the great work she does on behalf of all the members.
Respectfully,
Mike.
Golf Course Maintenance
Senior Moments
I hope everyone has been enjoying the
summer thus far. It has been mild and bit
windy, but overall very cooperative in regards
to growing healthy turf. August is a key time
of the year when maintenance programs are
evaluated for their effectiveness. Fertilizers,
amendments, fungicide programs, and cultural
practices are studied and adjusted as needed
to meet goals or strategies setup going into
spring. Of course, the target goal is to produce
ideal playing conditions and healthy turf. The greens, the past
few months, have been aerated with small tines and sanded on
a regular basis to benefit root structure. This along with a foliar
fertilizer has been very successful as the greens have held up
well so far.
I have heard comments about brown areas in the roughs. We
did have an outbreak of fungus (leaf spot) in a few rough areas
during July resulting in turf that looked brown. These brown
areas were not brown from lack of water but discolored from leaf
damage from the fungus. This was not a serious condition. A
fungicide application along with a change in the weather quickly
remedied the situation.
I do remind everyone that it is very difficult if not impossible
to keep the entire golf course a beautiful “wall to wall” green
as seen in the spring throughout the summer. Irrigation to
the greens, tees, fairways, and roughs are setup to balance
healthy turf and a playable golf course. All of these areas
are maintained at different heights of cut and have different
irrigation requirements. The primary goal is to control the water
requirements for the shorter cuts of grass. Too much water with
the summer heat introduces humidity which is the kiss of death
to maintaining healthy turf. Regulating the irrigation to water
the fairways often does not meet the requirements for roughs or
vice versa. The tendency is to setup nighttime irrigation to the
minimum requirements to avoid wet conditions. Daytime spot
watering along with hand watering the greens are very important
to maintaining a uniform turf quality. A few dry areas in the
roughs are tolerable whereas dry areas in the greens, tees, and
fairways are never acceptable.
The trees along the cart path between #11 and #10 have
been pruned to improve the ability to see the landing area of
#11 fairway from #11 tees. For the safety of all, common sense
is encouraged to make sure the landing area on #11 fairway is
clear before hitting tee shots. For those playing #10, it is advisable
to use the right cart path and not drive up the left path. It is
impossible for those hitting a tee shot on #11 to see approaching
carts from #10.
There is very little to report regarding #16 drain project. The
old drain line location has been identified. A 6” drain pipe starts
from the left rough, crosses the fairway, and connects into a larger
8” line at the north side of the rough discharging to the creek. It
was a misconception that the drain ran along the south property
line before crossing the fairway. The drain is being scheduled for
a camera inspection by Pacific Liners for pipe condition. Plan for
repairs will be made per results of the inspection. The company,
Pacific Liners, does have the capability to bore clean the pipe at
the time of the inspection.
Congratulations are in order to Dan Bieber for earning a spot
in the 2010 US Senior Open Championship.
We have had a very active schedule this year, with four
events at home, including the Seniors’ Invitational, and
tournaments at Mira Vista, Contra Costa, Sequoyah, Black
Hawk, Marin, Meadow Club, and Richmond.
Thanks to those who participated, and congratulations to
all of those who have won!
To date, we have experienced a reduced number of
participants for both at home and away than in previous years,
including a reduced field for the Senior Invitational.
There are 13 (4 away and 9 at home) events remaining
this season (a copy of the schedule can be picked up in the
pro shop).
We would like to encourage those who have been unable
to participate to adjust their schedule and join us for enjoyable
rounds of golf, good food, good venues, prizes, raffles, and a
chance to meet some great people from other Bay Area country
clubs.

From the GVCC
Guest Sommelier
Food and Beverage
July was a busy month for everyone at Green Valley. The
July 4 golf tournament and the club sponsored barbecue were
great fun and real successes. Deann Ikard introduced some
great wines that are being offered by the glass during July and
August. North Bay Medical hosted a huge golf tournament in
July, and the Men’s Invitational is always a success.
No doubt the highlight of the month was the James Garner
band’s tribute to Johnny Cash. They performed for two hours
and had the crowd dancing in the street. We’ve never before
seen so many classily dressed Cowpokes at Green Valley!
August promises to be another activity-filled month.
Martin Serota’s Dr. Feelgood Band will entertain on Friday
August 6 for happy hour—an event not to miss. Grgch Hills
winery will be featured at the Winemaker’s Dinner on August
19, and there are still a few spots available. Rock Creek’s off
site evening in Tuscany is scheduled for August 22 and is sold
out with a waiting list. The last Bingo of the season will occur
on August 6. And the music event we have all been waiting
for – Franc D’Amborsio—is scheduled for August 27 on the
front lawn. Be sure to take advantage of as many of our special
events as you can as they are all fabulous.
Don’t forget that the Hit and Run barbecue is operating
every weekend throughout the summer.
We are still anxiously awaiting the Board’s decision on
the wood-burning oven and hoping for approval for the
expenditure.
We had a great tasting on July 9th.
Thank you all for attending. The white
wine Rustler from Kinero Winery was
very well received and winemaker
Ant hony K i nero poured a not her
white that evening – the 2009 Alice
- 100% Grenache Blanc . There was
a very positive response to this wine
by the group and we have decided to
feature it as well. Enjoy!
After tasting the wines the Central Coast area has to
offer, I’m sure you will all want to visit the Northern Central
Coast where they are produced. So, put on your jeans and
cowboy boots and head on down to Paso Robles for a weekend
of fabulous wines and fine dining.
It is an easy four hour drive. To get there take Highway
680 South to 101 South. After you leave King City, the
landscape changes and the distinct rolling hills of the Central
Coast are everywhere. You have about 45 minutes of driving
left before arriving in Paso Robles. There are many places to
stay from the funky to the divine. There is the Hampton Inn
or the Paso Robles Inn (right downtown with hot springs). You can also book a B&B like the Canyon Villas or the Hotel
Carleton in Atascadero which boasts they have the best beds
anywhere.
Dining is exquisite in the area. Our personal favorites
are the Aritsan, the Villa Creek Restaurant (George Van Ess
featured their wines early this year) and Bistro Laurent. You
can also grab a picnic lunch and many of the wineries have
tables and picnic areas.
The Central Coast is where the winemakers are dubbed
“Rhone Rangers” making magical potions out of the grapes. The wines are noted for their unusual names. Here is a link to
a map of the wineries: http://www.pasowine.com/wineries/
map.php. There are so many to choose from. Wineries are
opening every week and there is much to discover here. My personal favorites are Denner (of course) which has a
state of the art winery with wonderful views of the Paso
Robles region. Please stop by and let them know that you
are enjoying their wines at the Club. I also recommend Villa
Creek Winery, Jack Creek, Terry Hoage and Linne Calado. Dunning Winery is a favorite of Tom & Lisa Kirby and they
introduced us to this delightful place. Be sure to take a turn
on the giant swing outside of their tasting room. George
& Melody Van Ess particularly like Stacked Stone. Patti
Williams recommends Tobin James which has a Port we call
Liquid Love - the mainstay of many ‘group therapy’ sessions
for our lady members. Four Vines has great glasses for sale
– check them out.
The drive around the winery roads is magical with oak
trees laden with moss and rolling hills everywhere. The
road winds in and out of picturesque places – each one better
than the last. Enjoy! Please let us know what you discover. Hope you
have a convertible!

Around the Courts
SOCIAL
We had a spirited family fun social on the Fourth of
July. There was a good mix of adults and juniors combining
for some very entertaining tennis. Thank you very much to
Nancy Briggs for organizing the event. Also, a big thank you
to Francine Josephson for providing the American spirit at
the courts with her wonderful decorations and continued
enthusiasm for all things tennis.
TENNIS CAMP
Tennis camp concluded at the end of July. We had even
more kids this year than last. It was great to see the returning
kids from last summer show a lot of improvement in their
games; they were a good example for the newer students to
look up to. Working with counselors who had grown up at
GVCC participating in Tennis Camp was a great experience.
Thank you very much to Joey Zink, Samantha Stallings,
Andrea Balestra, Nicole Levin, and Jack O’Brien for your
help in continuing the tradition of great tennis at GVCC. I
would also like to thank everyone at the pool for their hard
work and support. Anthony and his talented lifeguards, and
Hector at the snack bar were very helpful again this year,
providing a great summer experience for the kids.
LEAGUES
Congratulations to the 4.0 women’s team who qualified
for the playoffs again. They are led by Donna Rubin and
posted a 4-1 victory over Vintage of Napa to advance to the
next round of the playoffs. They next play against Rancho
Solano with the winner going on to be Napa/Solano’s
representative at District playoffs in August.
CARDIO
Cardio tennis continues to be a fun way to stay fit and hit
some tennis balls. It is Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday
at 4 p.m. All levels are welcome.
CLINICS
During the summer we have moved the Ladies’ Clinic
to Saturday mornings from 9:00–10:30 a.m. We have had a
good turnout and people are staying to play afterwards.
Call Steve if you are interested in trying it.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRO
Summer at the tennis courts has been rewarding. There
have been a lot of kids and grandkids of members enjoying
the activities at the Club. I would like to thank Tina for
being the Camp Mom and taking care of all the things that
make my job easier and fun for the campers. I hope to see
everyone down at the courts.
With such a great turnout of Juniors this year, we are
now forming USTA Jr. Teams who can learn to play local
tournaments and against other clubs. I will be contacting
kids soon, but if you have a Junior who wants to play
more tennis year round, please contact me at 864-0660 for
details.
Sincerely,
Steve DeVries

Yoga Classes Continue!
Do you need to be more focused
in your life and possibly in your
tennis and/or golf game? Do you
need that extra flexibility to get the
perfect swing or backhand? Could
you use more balance in your game?
Yoga could be the answer. Join us for
our weekly Monday morning Yoga
Session with Kelly Spitzer, our ACE
Certified Fitness Instructor. Hatha
Yoga is a gentle practice giving the
participants enough time between Asanas (postures) so as to
focus on proper alignment and reap the benefits of prayanana
(breathing). There is a section devoted toward body balance
to promote core stabilization which could improve your golf or
tennis game. All fitness levels are welcome as modifications are
provided to anyone who may be uncomfortable in any particular
Asana.
