Presidents Report
Once again the S.D.C.C. team has been busy as usual. At the moment it is a hectic time of year for
organising some of the biggest events for the club for 2009. I will start by thanking everyone involved
at the Ladies and Juniors Khanacross practice day. Christine Smallacombe did a great job as the clerk
of course and David Charlton as the secretary for the Ladies and Juniors Khanacross practice day. The
day went very well and I heard nothing but good reports. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
This year once again at Clipsal, I was given the job of looking after the Cams display for the Junior
Development program and the Rally side of the display. It does become a long day being there at
6.30am and leaving about 11.30pm. I was able to recruit a few club members to help on the display.
Thankyou to everyone who was able to help on these days taking the time to talk to anyone interested
in motorsport. I think we may have got a few new people interested in the Junior Development Program
for next year. I would like to personally thank Christine and Neville Smallacombe for transporting the
Daihatsu Junior Development car for the CAMS display.
On Wednesday 25th March, Michael Clements and I were fortunate enough to be invited to the Eastern
Fleurieu Secondary School in Strathalbyn. We had the pleasure and opportunity to present Laura Nash
a young lady who has cystic fibrosis, a computer on behalf of Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally and Southern
Districts Car Club. During the presentation there were many tears in people’s eyes including my own.
Laura and her family as well as all those involved were very grateful and thankful for our generosity
with the computer that was donated to her. A special thankyou is to be given to everyone at ASP for
their time and effort in organising the computer, accessories and programs needed for Laura. We
would all like to wish Laura all the best for the future and hope that the computer will help Laura keep
up with all her school work and interacting with friends and family on the internet whilst she is in
hospital.
Our next major event for the year is our ASP Mount Alma Mile Hill Climb on the 18th-19th April. We
already have 120 entries for this event and we are looking forward to it. Michael Clements and the
committee for the event have spent many hours already preparing for the Hill Climb. If there is
anyone interested in helping on the day for anything you can contact myself on 0412 808 099 and I will
be able to point you in the right direction who to speak to (even if it is only helping in the canteen), any
help is good help.
Until next month

The club has a chance to earn some easy money by selling
lottery tickets. We have been issued 20 books, 10 tickets
per book, cost per ticket $2. All tickets must be sold, that
means that the club has to purchase any tickets not sold.
The club will then receive that amount meaning we will
receive $400.

Dirt Motorkhana – 1st of March (Lanac Park)
It was the first dirt Motorkhana of the year at Lanac Park and as usual it was a fine, dry and dusty day. There
was a good turn out with 18 drivers entered. A couple of weeks before the event dad offered me the MX-5 to
drive but after seeing the results I don’t think I will be allowed back in it! The day kicked off at 11am with Matt
Grigg as car 1 to show us all how it’s done.
My first run was also the first time I had driven the car which resulted in hitting a few cones. The second run
was much better once I worked out the hand brake actually works in this car. It was the reverse of the first
with a few people getting WD’s. The times were close with only a second between the top 3.
The third run involved reversing down the H track then driving forwards across the middle which proved
interesting for some with Jim McGough winning the run by just under a second. Dad managed to miss all the
cones on this run unfortunately for Brendan Warner who spectacularly took out three. Tim Van der hoek
pulled a very nice front end flick on the third run which put most of us to shame. Good to see the juniors
doing well.
The fifth run and final run of the day had a donut in the middle which those of us in rear wheel drive had a bit
of fun with. By now it was pretty close at the top with the final results ending up with Guy Walker 3rd, Jim
McGough 2nd and myself 1st.
We all had a great day with special thanks going to David Charlton for running the event, Graham Van der
hoek for setting some interesting and fun courses and to all the officials and canteen staff who helped out.
Well done to all.

Laptop Computer donated to Laura Natt
The organisers of the 2009 asp / Cut Price Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally have donated a brand new Laptop
Computer with software and wireless broadband internet to local Cystic Fibrosis sufferer Laura Natt.
Southern Districts Car Club, who run the Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally, had taken on Cure4CF (Cystic Fibrosis)
as their major Charity for 2009. They have been raising money through donations by competitors from the
clubs two largest events, the Mt Alma Mile Hillclimb and the Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally. The club set it's
goal at raising $10,000 for Cure4CF, with money also set to come from profits made through the BBQ,
canteen and donation tins at the events.
Michael Clements, Clerk of Course for the events, became aware of Laura through an article in local
newspaper The Southern Argus, where he read that friends of 16 year old Laura were raising money to buy
her a laptop with wireless internet so she can continue her school work and keep in contact with her friends
while receiving treatment in Melbourne.
As Laura lives just 4 km down the road from Michael, he thought it appropriate to donate the computer in
addition to the efforts already being put in by the Club for Cure4CF. With unanimous support from the
committee of the 2009 asp / Cut Price Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally, and using the resources of event sponsor
asp - Application Service Provider who sourced the products, the laptop was purchased for Laura.
Michael Clements and Club President Darryl Power handed over the Laptop, complete with Windows Vista,
Office programs and wireless broadband Internet to the value of $2100, at a school assembly on Wednesday
the 25th of March at the Eastern Fleurieu School where Laura is a student. Michael promoted official event
charity Cure4CF, an organisation committed to finding a cure for Cystic Fibrosis, with dollars from each
entrant at this years Rally being donated to the cause. Michael also talked about the Southern Districts Car
Club's Junior Development Program, which trains young drivers in car control and safety under controlled
conditions. Events such as the 2009 asp / Cut Price Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally also raise valuable funds for
the club to continue the program.

The Southern Districts Car Club started the first Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS) Junior
Development Program in South Australia in 2005, and since then the club has trained over 100 juniors
between the ages of 12 and 17 years how to drive responsibly. One-on-one instruction is provided in car by
experienced competitors, as well as teaching car safety, basic vehicle maintenance and CAMS requirements
for events. The Juniors also get a visit by the police, who talk about the pressures the children will receive
from their mates.
Southern Districts Car Club has undergone a transformation over the last 7 years from a small club of 60
members, to one of the largest car clubs in South Australia. This has been done by becoming more family
friendly, including becoming alcohol free at club meetings, and through the club track near Mt Compass
called Lanac Park. Money raised by the Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally helps maintain Lanac Park for the CAMS
Junior Development Program to run on. Southern Districts Car Club is now helping other Clubs in South
Australia set up their own Junior Development Programs.
The Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally is scheduled to run on May the 30th and 31st, bringing competitors from all
over Australia to compete on closed sections of road throughout the Fleurieu Peninsula. The committee hope
this great tourism opportunity will bring much needed business to the area, with crews needing
accommodation, fuel, food, drinks and entertainment, as well as visiting tourist attractions in the Fleurieu
Peninsula. The event will showcase exotic cars like Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Porsches, as well as more
common cars like the Subaru WRX and Mitsubishi Lancer, and classics like the beloved Datsuns and Escorts.

Ladies and Junior’s Khanacross Practice
th
On Sunday March 8 , three ladies and 9 juniors fronted at Lanac Park for the Ladies and Juniors Khanacross Practice
day. The purpose of the event was to encourage ladies and juniors to have a go at driving Lanac Park in a noncompetitive environment so they could familiarize themselves with the track at their own pace, then gradually become
comfortable with driving at competition speed. The ultimate goal, of course, to get a few more people involved in club
events and maybe a couple of new club members too!
The conception of the event began after my first attempt at a Khanacross. I was driving an unfamiliar car, on a track I
had never driven, and to make matters worse, there had been around 50 mm of rain leading up to the event., so the
track was what I can only describe as “slushy”. On my first run around the track, I came unstuck in the esses. Having
practically no experience in a rear wheel drive car, I oversteered and with conditions as wet as they were, almost spun
the car around to the left whilst trying to navigate the curve of the track… then did the same to the right trying to
correct… and after a few more “almost spins” trying to straighten the car up, the front passenger side connected with
the tyre barrier around the gate post near the exit of the esses. I broke the headlight, dented the guard… and dented
my ego a bit, too!
I never got to finish another run that day, because the “Stigma” as we now call it decided it wasn’t going any further half
way through my second run! I had to call for the tractor to pull my stricken vehicle off of the track so the event could
continue! Marc Tillett kindly offered to let me finish the day in his car, which he calls “Kermit”, but having already
customized one car, I had no intention of doing the same to another. Especially not someone else’s car! (My “borrowed”
car wasn’t such a worry, as it was off to the wrecker soon anyway!)
Ever since then, I haven’t been brave enough to have another go, as the options have been to use my road car (which I
haven’t considered a real option, because it’s worth more than I care to risk damaging), or Jim’s “hand me down” rally
car, which we now keep for pace noting rally events and for me to compete in. The trouble is, I don’t want to break Jim’s
old rally car, the Pulsar GTi, as I know how much he loves his “old girl” because she took him to a class win in the
Australian Rally Championship.
What I desperately wanted was a chance to drive the GTi around Lanac at my own pace, without the pressure of
competition, so I could become familiar with the track and get some confidence after my mishap!

Adopt a Junior Development Car
The Junior Development vehicles need homes.
There are three SEPARATE tasks and any help is appreciated:
• Storage of the car between JDP events
• Transport the car to and from the 4 JDP days
• Wash, charge and check in preparation for the JDP days
Please contact SDCC if you can help with ANY of the above. Even if you can only do ONE of the items
above it will help reduce the workload for the JDP program.
Well, the Ladies and Juniors Khanacross
Practice was exactly what I needed! I started
off slow and tentative, but with a few pointers
from Jim, who was an instructor on the day, I
became a little more comfortable with the
track. I came unstuck on the first test that
used the H pattern, completely forgetting I
had to TURN RIGHT until Jim hastily
reminded me just as I was putting my foot
down to go straight (as per a previous test).
I wasn’t the only one that didn’t get it all right – there were a few spills during the day! Brook spun coming in to the finish
when she braked in a large hole just a few metres from the finish line… Anne-Marie spun when she cut in too close in
the esses… and Brooke spun when he held too much speed turning from the esses into the H. So I guess some of us
found our limit… but safely!
By the end of the day, I felt comfortable enough that I could drive the GTi around the track without breaking it. Do I feel
comfortable about competing in a Khanacross? Well, not exactly… having now done a practice khanacross, I have a lot
of admiration for the blokes that can drive around Lanac at blistering speed AND take the right course! For me, I’m
almost willing to bet I’ll have to settle for at least at least one WD when I do a Khanacross for real later in the year!
One of the highlights of the event for me was meeting up with Anne-Marie. She signed up for membership on the day,
and after returning from her first run with a grin from one ear to the other, she declared “I’ve been waiting for this day for
a whole year!”, and then proceeded to relate her plans on purchasing a car for Lanac within the next couple of weeks!
She was so enthusiastic, it put a smile on my face for the rest of the day! I’ve been in email contact with Anne-Marie
since the event, and she has already found a car… and entered our first Khanacross for the year! Great stuff!
