Community Benefit Contributions Shown Here Do Not Reflect the
generous contributions provided by the independent local physicians

addition, these contributions do not include the generous donations of time, talent, and dollars made by
our employees to agencies and organizations throughout the community.
St. James Leadership
The Affordable Health Care Act
is bringing big changes to health
care funding and delivery. St.
James Healthcare is poised and
ready to adapt to these changes,
while maintaining the longstanding
traditions of the Sisters of Charity
of Leavenworth Healthcare System
and its mission to foster God’s healing love, with
special concern for the poor and vulnerable.
St. James provided $7,315,058 of community
benefit in 2011 to our local area. These dollars
can be seen at work in the care given by our
dedicated team of health care providers; in
St. James Healthcare Foundation programs;
and in outreach programs, such as St. James
Healthcare’s Montana Sports Medicine Program.
From our mobile PET scan services to our
vascular screening program, the health of our
community and availability of on-site, state-ofthe-art technology remain a priority.
Our staff continues to grow. This year we
welcome new medical groups, including two
new pediatricians from the University of Vermont
Medical School, who chose to serve in Butte
after completing St. James’ Residency Rotation
Program. From the food we provide to the
Community Feeding program, to the prescription
drugs provided to those who cannot afford
necessary medications, to essential regional
trauma and emergency medical services, St.
James plays an integral part in improving the
quality of life for the people living in southwest
Montana, as we continue to provide quality care,
close to home.
The care and commitment from our employees is
second to none. They are the caring hands that
provide such high quality healthcare services
to our patients. We are truly blessed to have
such exceptionally skilled and compassionate
caregivers in our community.

of southwest Montana through the Montana Sports
Medicine Program. In 2011, St. James provided seven
Certified Athletic Trainers to Montana Tech, Butte Central
High School, Butte High School, Anaconda High School,
and Twin Bridges High School. St. James also provided
additional part-time Certified Athletic Trainers at Ennis
High School, Sheridan High School, Harrison High
School, and Granite County High School.
“St. James also provides physicians at home games
for Butte High, Butte Central, and Montana Tech,”
said Holly Ferguson, program director. Other Montana

St. James “PET Project”
Mobile PET Scan Service
Since November of 2008, St. James Healthcare has been
contracting with Alliance Imaging of Spokane, Wash. to provide
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanning in Butte. Twice
each month, the mobile PET trailer is on site at St. James
Healthcare. This state-of-the-art test is used to pinpoint a cancer
location and develop treatment options for cancer management.
“By offering this service, our patients can receive this important
test at home, without the need to travel,” said Jerri Doyle,
manager of imaging services.

Providing Quality Care Close to Home
Ready for Health Care
Reform Changes
The Affordable Health Care Act addresses
health care costs while placing policies into
effect that address both quality and continuity
of care. Through Department of Health and
Human Services incentives, Medicare patients
will receive better coordination and continuity of
care through Accountable Care Organizations
(ACOs). The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
Services (CMS) report that 2 out of 3 Americans
over 65 have multiple chronic conditions which often require multiple health care providers and
services. Coordination of these services through ACOs not only cuts costs, but improve the quality of
care—making health care more effective and affordable for all. ACOs are all about collaboration and
teamwork. St. James Healthcare is taking a team approach to patient care as it responds to health
care reform changes. The formation of the St. James Medical Group was announced in January,
2013. The group is composed of 21 diverse and experienced health care providers, in six different
specialties, who collaborate in bringing quality health care to the people of southwest Montana.
The St. James Medical Group includes the newly acquired Rocky Mountain Clinic. The previously
independent practice offers services in family medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, and internal medicine.
In addition to Rocky Mountain Clinic, St. James Healthcare recently acquired the Frontier Cancer
Center’s Medical Oncology Clinic, which was operating at St. James’ on-site Cancer Center. The
St. James Medical Group also includes the St. James Heart Center, St. James Surgical Associates,
St. James Emergency Medicine, and St. James Urology groups. “We are very excited about the St.
James Medical Group and the addition of its newest members.
The group will help us better serve our patients St.
James faces the ongoing changes related to health care
reform,” said Chuck Wright, President and CEO of St.
James Healthcare.

Growing With Our Community To Meet Southwest Montana’s Needs
Every member of a team has a role and a purpose. This philosophy applies equally in sports
and in health care.
“With the changes we will see over the next few years as
a result of health care reform, it makes sense to expand
and diversify our services.” Chuck Wright, President and CEO, St. James Healthcare

Residency Rotation Program Recruits New Pediatricians
Thanks to the Residency Rotation Program (RRP), which is funded through the St. James Healthcare
Foundation, Butte will soon have two new pediatricians. Both pediatricians made the decision to serve
in Butte, after completing four week RRP rotations in clinical practice settings at St. James Healthcare,
Rocky Mountain Clinic, and the Butte Community Health Center (CHC). A collaborative effort between
CHC and St. James, since the RRP began two years ago, seven medical residents from the University
of Vermont and Brown University in Rhode Island, have rotated through Butte practices. The RRP
also accepts residents from the University of Washington. The RRP provides medical residents with
practical, clinical experience in family medicine and pediatrics in a more rural health care setting. For the
new pediatricians, John Cole, M.D. and Greg Schulte, M.D., both the community and its health care
providers were a good fit. Dr. Serena Brewer, the Program’s physician coordinator, is a strong advocate
and fan of the RRP. “The existing providers that live and work in the community have a genuine interest
in training the next generation,” she said. Recruiting physicians to southwest Montana, a medically
underserved area, is a priority at St. James. “We’ve already seen that the program is recruiting providers
to our community,” Brewer said. “It’s great that the St. James Healthcare Foundation was able to help
fund this program.”

Debt of Gratitude
$10,000 gifted to St. James
It was 1995, and “Ron” was a long-haul trucker
driving through Butte. Feeling ill, he pulled into
the St. James Healthcare parking lot, where he
collapsed and fell out of his truck. Found by
one of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth,
he was brought to the Emergency Room, where
he was treated and admitted, despite the fact
that he had no health insurance or means to
pay for his care. Fast-forward to October of
2012, when Ron, who asked for anonymity,
made a 1,000 mile trip to St. James, with a
$10,000 check in hand —his debt of gratitude
for the life-saving care he had received. Each
year St. James provides millions of dollars in
un-reimbursed care for those in need. Thanks
to Ron, others in need will benefit from his
gift and his gratitude.
