Hilary has been a valuable member of our staff, and we will certainly miss her
and the professionalism she brought to the job. We wish her and her family the
very best as they continue to build their life together.
Our Senior Wardens and I have worked
diligently to find a new Office Manager. We
have increased the hours of the position to
make it a full-time post.
We have had a number of applicants for the
position and have interviewed the most
qualified of them.
We are pleased to announce that we have
hired Sarah Krumm to fill that position. She
is a delightful young lady, skilled and
experienced. We are overjoyed to have her
join our team. Sarah will be part-time during
the month of June and then full-time beginning
July 5.
Fr. Clark Sherman is on
Sabbath Leave until July.
I am departing in early June for a month's Sabbath Leave. While I am away, Sr.
Wardens Mollie Eckman and Nancy Blake will provide general church
oversight. Ministry oversight will be provided by Dn. Roxanne, Dn. Connie and
Fr. Greg. Please call on any of them if you should have a need or concern.
Needless to say, I will miss you all very much while away. My time in the north
woods of Wisconsin will provide much needed solitude and opportunities for
spiritual growth and contemplative study. I am grateful to the vestry for providing
me with this wonderful opportunity. Throughout, you will all be in my daily
prayers.

June Adult Potluck
Handbell Director
Workshop Announced
The June adult potluck will be hosted by Jim and
Kim Puckett on Friday, June 10, at 6:30 P.M. Their
address is: 12 Red Rock Court, Bozeman. For
directions, call Jim at (623) 853-6031 or Kim at
(623) 853-6032.
A free handbell director workshop will be offered in
Bozeman on Saturday, Sept. 17. This workshop,
which is being presented in communities across the
nation in September, covers all the basic
information for starting a handbell choir.
Please bring a dish to share and a beverage of
your choice.
The workshop will be held at the First Presbyterian
Church at 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. on Sept. 17. The
facilitator will be M.A. Bellingham of Bozeman
New members

a great way to
meet other church
family members.
These kinds of
events are also a
great way for
―old‖ members to meet those who are new and to
visit with those they do know.
Interested in hosting a potluck? Hosts are needed
for 2017!

The workshop is based on curriculum created by
Handbell Musicians of America and includes: basic
ringing techniques, basic directing skills, beginning
bells in worship and ringing with less than a full ensemble.

I found this tidbit in a pile of saved articles on my
desk and thought I would share it with you all.

Why You Will Not Get Sick Sharing A
Communion Cup!
In this age of hand sanitizers, it may appear a bit
unseemly for a whole church full of people to
actually drink out of the same chalice. ―Won’t I
catch a cold or pass on the flu?‖ you might ask.
Actually, sharing a common cup isn’t as
hazardous as one might suspect.
Most Episcopal churches use real wine – and
then some: we use fortified wine, such as port.
This has high alcohol content, which kills off
most every germ.
Not long ago, a Canadian doctor named David
Gould did research into illnesses passed through
a common cup. He found churchgoers are more
likely to get sick from airborne infections rather
than a shared chalice.
―If communion cups were a danger, there would
be cases of mass infections,‖ he wrote. There are
not any such cases.
However, if you feel uncomfortable drinking the
wine (or are a recovering alcoholic), it is not
essential to receive Christ at Communion.
Episcopalians believe Christ is present in both
the consecrated bread and the wine, so receiving
one, the other, or both, gets one no more (or less)
of Christ’s presence.

All-City Vacation Bible School – June 20 to 24
St. James youth are welcome to register for the All-City
VBS, Deep Sea Discovery! Classes will be held in
neighboring church buildings within our two-block radius
and promise to be fun, educational and a wonderful way to
connect ecumenically with other churches. Emily Thrasher
is recruiting both adult and teen volunteers for what will
be ―an experience of God's love, grace and joy for over
140 children and 150 youth and adult volunteers. It is
where our larger Christian family can come together to
learn about and celebrate the unconditional love of Jesus
Christ.
Ongoing Events:
Nursery in the Todd Center – Provided
during the 10 A.M. service. Attendants play
games, color, read, build with Legos and care
for your little ones up to age 2 while you attend
the service in the Nave. Please retrieve your
children directly after the service and no later
than 11:10 A.M.
Youth Group – Stay connected throughout the
summer! Text Emily (702) 236-3153 with your
parents’ permission to be notified of events.

Youth Group 2 You – Do you have a project
around the house for which you need
assistance? Being the wonderful and thoughtful
kids that they are, the Youth Group has
expressed a desire to help out the congregation
at large with any home projects that you just
can’t accomplish on your own – maybe
organize your garage, tidy up your overgrown
lawn or assemble that Ikea computer desk you
had delivered to your home? Please make a

she will see what the Youth Group can
cheerfully do for you!
Wednesday Night Family Night –
Thank you to everyone who participated and
helped continue St. James’ Wednesday night
celebration of this wonderful ministry! Please
join us again for food and fellowship followed
by various Christian Education Classes for
all ages in fall.

Call For Vacation Bible School Youth Assistants, Adult Leaders and Extra Volunteers
CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS FOR VBS! Do you have time to give to our Christian youth from 8:45 A.M.
to 12 P.M. from June 20 through June 24? Then the All-City VBS committee is looking for you!
 There is a need for Shepherds who are responsible for staying with the youth as they go from group to
group at our neighboring churches.
 There is a need for Snacks Distributors.
 There is a need for Youth and Adult Drama Leaders. One of our own St. James Youth Group members
is volunteering!
 There is a need for help with Carpentry – come one, come all!
What is your strength? We can find a place for you in Music, Games, Craftivities, Decorations leading up to
the week of outrageous fun and Christian fellowship and even the task of watching over the other volunteers’
very small children in the Nursery.

commitment from 8:30 A.M. to 12 P.M. June 20 through June 24. However, VBS is happy to accept your

Godly Play in the Todd Center & Upstairs – Is on summer break. We will resume in fall, with the school
calendar and three distinct age groups up to 5th grade. Fr. Clark and Emily are recruiting volunteers to train as
Storytellers and Doorkeepers for Godly Play.

A.B.B.A! Musicians
News from A.B.B.A! A(wesome).B(and).B(ringing). A(doration)! It is our purpose to impart in a musical way
the love and adoration of Jesus Christ and to celebrate His love of each one of us.
Our core group continues to be Connie Campbell-Pearson (piano & organ), Heidi Jones (vocals), Lynn
Lavinder (vocals and excellent ―roady‖), Jesse Wilmer on drums, Susan Johnston (guitar, selects music with
some original compositions completed) and Carla Neiffer, who has been singing with us for a while now.
We rehearse every Thursday at 5 P.M. in the Nave. Even if you can only sing occasionally, you are all
welcome! Contact me at [email protected] or at (406) 587-0278 for more information.
Pentecost was wonderful with one blended service at 10 A.M. featuring the St. James’ choir, A.B.B.A!, piano
and organ. We were blessed to hear music which celebrates the transcendence of God. This means that God is
the Creator and that with one thought He created the universe and all that is in it. When we offer up pieces of
music in worship such as Mozart’s Te Deum, God listens and the Heavens open. If you listen closely, you can
hear the angels sing!
We were also blessed to hear music that
celebrates the eminence of God. This
means that Jesus Christ is very near to us
and is amongst us. He is as near to each
of us as the people sitting next to us in
the pew. When He summons us, calls to
us, the answer should be and must be for
faithful people ―Here I am, Lord. Send
me.‖
When both visions of God are celebrated
in faith, love and music, it creates a
beautiful and holy synergy which is
powerful and which lifts us up so that as
one worshiping Body of Christ we
proclaim, ―Happy Birthday, Church!‖
Thus it was at St. James’ on the Day of
Pentecost, and it was glorious! Thank you to the St. James’ choir, A.B.B.A! musicians and especially to
Deacon Connie at the piano and organ. It truly does not get any better than this.
Looking ahead, please note that our worship music summer schedule begins at 10 A.M. on June 5 (traditional
music) and 10 A.M. on June 12 (A.B.B.A!)

James Day! This will be an extra-special
day with a lovely church service at 10 A.M.,
a visit from Bishop Brookhart and a potluck
picnic at the Bozeman Ponds Pavilion
(following the church service)! Watch the

St. James Photo Directory: Thank you St. James parish family for assisting the Membership Committee to
make this church photo directory project a success! The photo directories (for those parishioners whose photos
are published in the directory—parishioners who sat for Lifetouch portraits or submitted photos and paid the
submittal fee) are available from the Church Office. This has been a very successful and fulfilling project,
and we look forward to creating another church photo directory in four to five years.

Overall, April expenses exceeded operating income by $3.6K.
Here are explanations of the significant April variances.
Revenues:
Plate offerings were $1.7K below the budget estimate.
Expenses:
Building & Grounds costs were $0.6K below the April forecast.
Utilities costs were $0.6K below the April forecast because of the billing rate
reduction from NorthWestern Energy.
Finance & Operations costs were $0.2K over the forecast due to payment of the Easter advertising bill from
the newspaper (forecasted to pay in March).
Payroll was $1.3K over the forecast due to payments to two interns.
Designated/Restricted Funds:
The total of all funds decreased by $4.1K to $225.8K.
Rector Discretionary Funds decreased by $0.4K to $4.3K.
