President’s report
It is with pleasure that I present the 2015-16 Sorrento Surf Lifesaving Club Annual Report.
This year has again been highly successful and enjoyable across all aspects of the Club.
Our club exists to deliver the following services and outcomes:
•
•
•
a safe and well supervised beach where the risks of harm are minimised by
proficient and vigilant patrollers
the development of surf awareness and skills in young people through the
Nippers Program
opportunities for people of all ages to develop their lifesaving skills and develop
strong social connections in a welcoming and supportive environment.
In 2015/-16 all of these services have been delivered in a highly competent and community
focused way and we should all be proud of the contribution our Club makes to the social
fabric of the southern Peninsula community and the services we provide to people from all
over greater Melbourne.
Sorrento isn’t the biggest surf club in Victoria, we don’t have the highest profile in LSV, and
we certainly don’t market ourselves as eagerly as some others. However, what we do have is
a strong, family based Club that provides a great experience for peninsula locals and our
Melbourne based members.
The performance of our patrollers has been outstanding with good numbers on most days
and a significant number of rescues, preventative actions and the delivery of first aid. Our key
objective is to ensure no lives lost between the flags and this has been delivered by our
patrollers for the 18 years that the Club has served the community. Thank you to all of our
patrolling members, particularly our Club Captain, Hayden Owens and all the Patrol Captains.
Our Nipper Program has been through a year of consolidation after 3 years of rapid growth
and some of the stresses and strains that comes along with that growth. Brett Irvine and the
Nipper parent group have once again delivered an excellent program and the feedback I
consistently receive is that the kids really enjoy the program and develop great surf
awareness skills. Well done to all of the Age Managers, water safety and other parents who
put in many hours to make the program run as smoothly as it does.
The financial positon of the club is secure with our self-generated funds sufficient to meet all
of the operating costs of delivering Club services. Through prudent financial management
over a number of years we have been able to replace the ATV, renovate the Clubhouse and
provide sufficient equipment whilst maintaining a strong financial position.
Our Membership Officer, Josie Hunting has once again done an enormous job managing the
membership process and ensuring all the paperwork is done and fees paid. Josie is stepping
down this year and I would like to personally thank her for her hard work and tenacity.
The renovation of the Clubhouse during the year has been really well received by members
and the work put in by Chris Baker, Brett Irvine and Craig Plehn has been outstanding and
well above and beyond what we should expect from volunteers.
This is my last year as President and I would like to thank all members and particularly my
fellow committee members for the support I have received over the last 2 years.

Club Captain’s report
2015-16 was another successful season for the patrolling side of Sorrento SLSC. It was great
to see so many younger members donning their patrol caps and representing the club and
protecting the community. Proudly, again in the 2015-16 season, we kept all patrons at
Sorrento Back Beach safe.
The season could not have functioned without the assistance of Patrol Captains and Vice
Captains; I would like to personally thank each captain for their help through the year.
Captain/Vice Captain
Hayden Owens/Tim Curwood
Howard Draper/Bruce Grayling
Tom Morrison/ Gerry Lute, John Baker
Felicity Draper/ Lachlan Owens, Abby Stirling
Duncan Stirling/ Jack Jones
Furthermore, the hard work of Gerry Lute, Andy Nettlefold and Duncan Stirling ensured all
IRBs and rescue equipment were in working order to be used at any time.
I would also again like to thank Ro Moore, for her hard work in keeping the First Aid room
immaculate throughout the season.
A special mention to Jack Jones and Ben Stringer who completed 200+ and 100+ patrol
hours respectively.
2016-17 is shaping up to be a big season, and we are looking for any members who are
willing to take a leadership role and improve their lifesaving skills to step forward and assist in
the progression of the Lifesaving Club.
Finally, a big thank you to all who patrolled throughout the season. We did our jobs admirably
and for that, we can be proud. I look forward to seeing all of you on Requal Day later this year
before we hit the surf for another great summer down at Sorrento!
See you on the beach,
Hayden Owens

Life Saving Services report
It is with pleasure I present an overview of the Life Saving Services for the 2015-16 season.
The Sorrento SLSC went into the season with five patrols that did:
•
18 rescues
•
1 missing person search
•
•
•
45 first aids
631 preventative actions
And a massive 3097 volunteer patrol hours
We had 81 active members contribute to our patrols this season. This number is an increase
in Patrol numbers from last season. This is a pleasing increase in numbers. With the success
of the nipper cadet and also the YIPs program we are holding some of our younger members.
Our Rescue Equipment was in outstanding condition at the start of the season, thanks to IRB
Captain Gerry Lute and Gear steward Andy Nettlefold. A big thank you must also go to Chris
Baker who has redesigned the Gear store keeping all the boards off the ground. The First Aid
room was again kept in tip top shape by Ro Moore. Also the use of the ‘top depot’ to store
rescue equipment helped in keeping the equipment safe.
The coming season will see a few changes in the way we handle some first aid cases. These
will be addressed at the Requal session later this year. In the mean time you may visit LSV
website and view the changes on circular 011:07:16
The new radio network is still in the works with a definite changeover date not yet determined.
Again I must thank Hayden Owens, Club Captain, for his tireless work around the club and
also to my fellow Patrol Captains for ensuring we had no default patrols this season
See you in the surf

Facilities report
The majority of the work completed in the last 12 months was inspired by Brett Irvine who had
a vision of refurbing the interior of the clubrooms. I extended this to include two new opening
doorways. This complicated things because it involved liaising with the powers that be.
After much letter writing and pleading with Parks Victoria, Heritage Victoria, and Peninsula
Shire Council, permission was finally received late August 2015. A five-month process!
Many thanks to Kris Rowe from Parks Vic for his assistance and encouragement.
While we were waiting for the go ahead a lot of preparation was undertaken. Some of the
tasks were completed in the 2014-15 season and as such were detailed in last year’s report.
This included internal painting, removal of some garden beds, moving of water meter, refurb
of top office for use by uniform shop, removal of hinged seating, installation of new lights and
general tidy up of clubrooms.
In late August Ron Caddy supplied (at the right price) and delivered all the building material
for the building works.
After much discussion external paint colours were selected - thanks to Justine McNamara.
In early September the blockwork walls were cut and demolished in preparation for new
opening windows and doors. On the 12th September a 6 cubic meter skip was filled with
building rubble and old carpet from main room - thanks to Craig, Gerry, Alex, Kathy, Finn and
Royston.
By the end of October door openings had been trimmed, infills rendered and external doors
installed. On 4th November Stacking glass upvc windows and the internal roller door were
installed - organised by Gerry. The same week Craig coordinated the installation of vinyl
flooring in kitchen and hallway and the regupol flooring in main room. On the 7th November
aggregate concrete was laid on carpark side of building and under large sliding doors - thanks
to Craig.
This may seem like a long timetable for two doors but considering it was mainly done with
volunteer labour is really impressive. Much thanks to Brett, Craig and Gerry and anyone else
who swung a hammer or a paint brush.
And then:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Main roller door was rejuvenated by grinding off rust and painting many times thanks to Brett and Gerry. This is only a short term fix. If anyone has any contacts in
the commercial roller door field please call me.
5 new illuminated EXIT signs installed
Craig tracked down 2 * TVS for the right price and installed them on articulated
brackets
Power points were installed in main room and equipment store
All old photographs were digitized and catalogued. A selection of photos from each
year of nippers were selected and framed for hanging in main room - thanks to Brett
and Sian Swift
New plants planted in garden beds and beds mulched.
New door signage was installed – thanks to Ro
New shower screens and exhaust fans were installed in outside bathrooms.
Nipper room was lined and a drying space created for water safety vests - Craig
again

Resident Tiger snake removed- thanks Victorian Snake Handlers- See Youtube
Thanks to Marc for supplying presentation cabinet and updating award boards.
Thanks to Dan Bradshaw and his sparky mate for installing external lights.
On the 31st March 2016 the DULUX Marketing team arrived and over the next 2 days the
outside walls of the clubrooms were painted. As part of the Surf Club Project, Dulux supplies
Paint to all Surf Life Saving Clubs in Australia. The marketing team in Victoria pick 2
community projects per year to volunteer to complete. We were fortunate to be chosen. The
location and the size of our building made it possible to complete with volunteer labour.
Priceless! Special thanks to Tom Williams (DULUX) for co-ordination.
Many thanks also to Brett, Zoe, Blair, Mason, Jack Jones and Harry Terry who painted all the
high bits.
New fire extinguishers were installed at main clubroom, pioneer hut and top depot. Thanks to
Tim and Ro for rejuvenating the Vintage Surf Ski Hanging upstairs.
Thank you to all those volunteers, even if I didn’t mention you.
A final thank you to the club committee for getting behind the ‘Club Refurb Project’.

Nippers report
2015-16 was a fun season once again for Sorrento Nippers. 182 nippers and their families
combined beautifully to enjoy the challenges set on our fantastically variable Back Beach. We
completed 14 Nipper sessions, 12 training seesions, 3 carnivals and many social activities.
Our rugged rocks returned after a Spring storm removed much of the sand covering them.
Combined with many low tides during sessions, the scene was set for torrid conditions with
severe penalties for those mismanaging their entries and exits. The boards bore the brunt of
this with piles of ‘dinged’ up boards littered around the clubhouse each week. Thanks to our
repair teams for keeping enough of them going and isolating off the best boards to be available
at carnival times.
The regular nipper season ran from
late November to mid-February, with
competition trainers continuing to midMarch. We competed very well at Mt
Martha in our local carnival. This was
followed up by strong qualification
results at the Pt Leo Regional
Qualifier.
The State Carnival at
Warnambool saw a huge number of
top 16 (final) finishes in most age
groups although out-competing the big
clubs for podium finishes only occurred
on 5 occasions.
The age managers kept the momentum of the age groups up all season and must be
commended for their attention to safety whilst keeping things fun. Thanks Jodie, Tim &
Jemimah, Shane & Nikki, Leon & Mason, Blair & John, Debbie and of course Justine for taking
care of our nippers. I believe we once again achieved our core objective of mental and physical
personal improvement for each and every child, something we can all be very proud of. The
age managers’ technical assistants were another key to the success of the groups providing
technical educational along with confidence building and simple comfort to their charges.
These former nippers show their future leadership skills consistently and with a care for the
nippers second to none.
Water safety numbers were again huge and much appreciated by the age managers and the
nipper co-ordinator. Our young bronzies in particular
showed great skill and anticipation in the water whilst the
‘older heads’ provided knowledge, encouragement and coordination between the water and land based volunteers.
Josie Hunting’s work in the registration side of the club was
again outstanding and she will be sorely missed now that
her sons have outgrown nippers. She has tightened up all
financial aspects of registration making it far fairer for all.
The amount of time given to the club for her background
work to the program has been enormous.
Thank you to Gina Fothergill completing her first season at the helm of competitions very
successfully. Dealing with LSV can be challenging, especially for new-comers but she forged
a path through this for the betterment of our comp nippers.

Dan Mooney wrote much of the weekly program and co-ordinated the water safety group in
conjunction with Des and Ange Smith. Great job again trying to move so many nippers in and
out through those rocks and the public. They were ably supported by the usual strong
characters namely Shane, Greg, Chris, Leighton, Maesson, Elise, Michael & David. The nipper
training work of Blair Johnstone, whose affinity and passion for kids’ sport is clearly evident,
was enthusiastically enjoyed by our core group of nippers too.
We thank Elissa Wright taking over from Marla Kosman in co-ordinating our nipper first aid.
She is only 13 but has vast experience in how our nipper program operates. Thanks to Marla
for her co-ordinating role and the many, many sessions she alone carried the first aid banner
for us all. The first aid volunteers give those of us running nippers the confidence to keep
pushing the nippers’ boundaries and make large mental and physical skill gains where possible.
Discerning real injury from those just requiring a little extra confidence helps keep everyone in
the water longer.
John & Anna Pease along with Gavin Houghton supplied coffee and hot chocolate on those
cold windy mornings. Together the BBQ (thanks Craig Plehn) and coffee vendors raised over
$3500 for the club and must be congratulated for their outstanding efforts.
Nicki Caddy continued on from last season carrying the work load of the uniform shop, much
appreciated Nicki! The new shop location seemed to work well along with the time frames to
access articles. Thanks to everyone for adjusting to suit the online system.
This seasons SRC group was huge with 27
graduates. The format of 5 days straight
before Christmas seems to suit most
families along with the club’s requirements.
The diversity of talent in the group was
remarkable with the result being many club
members ready to step up into so many club
roles in the future. The social side of this
group was also very strong and we hope to
see these faces around the club for many
years to come. It would also be great if more
of our nipper parents could become part of
the patrolling group on a regular basis to
swell the numbers further. Flowing on from
that we require more Bronzies (parents and former nippers) to step up into qualified Trainer
and Assessor roles as well as IRB drivers and crews. Courses are run by our club and LSV
for these roles.
The 2016-17 season will be my last working in the nipper group. We have a new contingent of
nipper committee members to help run the program along with the evergreen Dan Mooney,
Elissa Wright, Gina Fothergill, Nicki Caddy and myself. Thanks to Chris Biermann, Janice
O’Connor, Laura Jennings and Leighton Richardson for rolling up their sleeves to help next
season.
Endurance in swimming, running and boarding was a stronger focus for nippers this season,
especially for those in the training group. This continued on from our swimming focus of last
season. We encourage all families to check the requirements for next season now via the
nipper handbook and ensure the nippers receive the relevant training to be ready for challenges
in 2016-17; at least two swim sessions per week in term 4 please. Several pre-season runs
would be invaluable too. Boards can be borrowed pre-season to start preparing the body for
the rigours of the surf.
Sorrento SLSC 18th Annual report (2015-16)

Page 16
Enrolments for next season should start in September or early October. We are at our absolute
limit for nipper numbers, restricted heavily by the small size and rockiness of the Back Beach.
Numbers will be capped again at 35 per age group next season and incumbents will be asked
to enrol in a preferential early timeslot or risk losing their nipper spot to the many eager families
on the waiting list. Information will be forthcoming in September regarding this.
The Sorrento SLSC will continue working to meet all the
challenges of Surf Life Saving from patrolling to education,
from nippers to competitions. We hope all members enjoyed
the Club facilities after the refurbishment and used them to
further their family fun over the season.
Next season the Sorrento Nipper Program promises to be
packed with challenging moments, fun activities and lifelong
skill development for all of our wonderful little champs, the
nippers themselves. I wish you all a successful 2016 and hope we meet up again very soon
with all our friends from far and wide on Sunday November 27th for a swim (S Badge day) in
our little piece of paradise.
Brett Irvine
Nipper Co-ordinator, Sorrento SLSC
Competition report
Our senior competition team in 2015/16 was rather small to say the least with only 2
competitors flying the Sorrento colours on a regular basis over summer.
Sean Cummins started the year with a bang winning a silver medal (2.5
Km swim) and bronze medal (6 Km ski paddle) at the Victorian Endurance
Championships. He continued on with strong performances through the
Summer Surf Series and a number of top 10 results at the State
Championships including a 6th place in the Ski paddle.
John Baker ran well in the 2 Km beach run throughout the Summer Surf
Series and finished 6th at the State Championships.
Hopefully we will see a stronger presence at senior competitions next year
with a competitive group of Under 15s coming through the ranks.

Social activities report
We kicked off the 2016 season with a Pizza Night Bonanza in January! The newly renovated
clubhouse was jam packed with almost 200 members attending the night. Nippers were
running mad and adults kicked back and enjoyed the never-ending pizza delivery and
gourmet salads provided by Stringers and IGA Sorrento. We had plenty of giveaways of
SSLSC gear and a lot of fun was had by all.
Our next function was the hot and steamy Hawaiian Night. Out came the hula skirts and
Hawaiian shirts and the warm balmy night was perfect for most with an evening dip or paddle.
I hear it was a sight to be seen watching the next generation out in the water surfing under the
sunset. The kiddies were high as kites from the slushy machine and I hear there was not
much left in the bar either for the parents! A special thanks must go to my husband Paul for
taking the lead while I was away and his many helpers on the bbq. Also, many thanks to Paul
from Mubble for providing the delicious ice creams which I hear were a huge hit as always.
This year's Presentation Night is running in conjunction with our 'Season Opener' at the Rye
Hotel on Sat 24th September. We would love to see you all there to meet new members to
our club and also celebrate a wonderful year of life-saving and surf competition. Info will go
out soon with all the details.
Bring on next summer for another great year at the beach!

Bayswim report
The 2016 Bay Swim was held on the 17th January 2016. The day saw 595 swimmers
undertake the three events; with several swimmers entering in multiple swim distances.
The 4,000m course gained in popularity this year
and was again made up of two legs of the 2km
swim. The competitors were started at the finish line
and swam against the tide for 2km’s, then turned
around a series of buoys (to ensure the returning
swimmers did not clash with the outgoing
swimmers) and back to the start / finish line.
The weather this year was much nicer than it was
last year, the day was warm and pleasant for all.
We believe that a combination of the weather and the fact that our swim was the day after the
Portsea swim combined to make this one of our most successful to date. A number of
swimmers chose to enter both events, making each event even better.
Bag packing was completed in good time on the Friday prior to the event, a number of our
junior and some of our senior members helping out on the night. Bags were then stored until
Sunday morning when they were delivered to the registration tent at 7.00am ready for the tent
opening at 8.00am.
Setup was completed early on Sunday morning
and went smoothly. The team, led by Brett
Irvine, did a fantastic job of getting everything
ready for an 8am opening of the registration
tent, prior to a 9am competitor briefing of the
4km swimmers. Jane Wright again led the
registration volunteers to assist all competitors
collect their gear before their race. It was a
scramble from 8am until final close-off at
11.00am due to higher than anticipated entries
and the whole team did a superb job.
Brett’s leadership at the starting line was again superb and he liaised perfectly with the timing
people to ensure a very efficient timekeeping and competitor tracking process. The collection
of the timing bands and race winners was well managed although unfortunately a number did
fall off in the water – some of which were retrieved days later as they washed up on shore!
Marc Clavin (again) did a great job managing the
presentation process, awarding both the Tommy Haffey
memorial medals as well as those for all the other races,
The site clean-up was managed by Brett and a group of
volunteers and was very smooth and quickly completed.
A huge thanks goes to all the people who got the beach
ready to go and then left it cleaner than when we arrived.
Well done and many thanks.
Additional thanks must go to George Patterson who was involved for over 12 months with
getting the date set, then providing the leadership in postponing the first event. Jane Wright
managed all the volunteer roles and organised the packing of the show bags which went very
smoothly. Brett Irvine took on multiple roles from beach set up, clean up and race starter.

Marc Clavin controlled the day and the communications very well from the tower and helped
keep the competitors informed and up to date on the conduct of the day. Gerry Lute managed
the water safety element smoothly and very effectively yet again. Thanks also to Paul Gaynor
for overseeing the event.
All the safety personnel performed exceptionally well
under Gerry’s guidance. He also managed the
preparation of our own IRBs and the borrowing and
return of additional IRBs from the other surf clubs.
Ro Moore was exceedingly helpful in getting the fruit
prior to the event and getting it ready on the day. She
was also active in the registration tent and at the
finish line. Anna Tait was magnificent in her running
of the BBQ. providing egg and bacon rolls as well as cold drinks for the hungry hordes on the
day. Thanks go to both ladies.
Thanks must also go to our photographer on the day, Adrian Wilson, who travelled from
Melbourne that morning just to take photos (he’s not even a member but was keen to help
out!).
Finally, thanks to all the volunteers who helped out on
the day, without you the race would not have been
the success it was, or even possible, and the support
from Gina Harris and the Cousins Swim Series must
also be acknowledged.
The feedback from the competitors was very positive
and the team received a lot of compliments, and the
conduct of the day received very positive comments.
We look forward to welcoming Prue Stone as our new Swim Director for the 2017 swim and
eagerly await what we hope will be an even bigger and better event.

TRAINING & AWARDS
ANNUAL REPORT
Training & Awards
by Marc Clavin
Once again a difficult task this season with
continuity of the Chief Instructor role. Daniel
Bradshaw bravely undertook the position
however; despite a terrific commitment he
was unable overcome personal health issues.
On behalf of the Committee & all the
Members we’d like to thank Daniel for
amazing commitment. Our thoughts are
with Daniel and his family at this difficult
time.
Trainers
All Award courses begin with a structured
training program and with the fantastic
assistance of Hayden Owens, Jack Jones and
Daniel Bradshaw, Sorrento was able to
provide a range of programs for our
Members again this Season. Both the basic
Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Awards
were good sized classes and the specialty
Basic Beach Management (Silver Medallion)
Award was very popular. Next Season, with
the assistance of more Trainers, we may
hopefully provide more Specialty Awards for
our Members.
Assessors
We are fortunate to have a good number of
Assessors at Sorrento, which allows us to
have ultimate flexibility when it comes to
Assessment Day. Also, our Annual Re-Qual
(Skills Assessment) Day in Nov 2015, was as
busy as ever and included a number of
candidates from other Clubs taking
advantage of Sorrento’s Programs.
Many thanks again to our regular Assessors
Stefan Bagg, Howard Draper, Duncan
Stirling, Marc Clavin & Daniel Bradshaw
who ensured all the Candidates participating
in Sorrento’s 2015/16 Training Programs,
were able to achieve proficiency in their
Awards.
