Water is the primary carrier used in all tank mix solutions. Each water droplet, containing the added ingredient, needs to penetrate the leaf in order to do an effective job. This is not an easy task when done alone because of the important factors like water tension and complex leaf structure (i.e., hairs, wax and cuticle). Also, if the active ingredient does not penetrate in a timely manner, environmental factors like the sun (photodegradation) and untimely rain can render it useless. By adding nonionic surfactants, water tension is greatly reduced and tough-to-penetrate leaf surfaces become no match. We carry several different surfactants, but the most popular are R-11® and SYL-TAC®. R-11 has a neutral pH and contains activators which give it the capacity to lift the waxy platelets and gain access to the hydrophilic water channels in the leaf. SYL-TAC is nonionic, but contains organosilicone for superior wetting and penetrating ability. SYL-TAC is highly recommended for tough-to-kill perennials. The water droplet without a surfactant sits on the leaf hairs or plant surface with little contact, reducing spray activity. The surfactant reduces surface tension, allowing the droplet to spread over the leaf and penetrate the hairy surfaces. This provides broader leaf contact and increased spray activity. WHY NOT USE DISH SOAP? Dish soap can alter your solution’s pH, which can greatly affect its efficacy. Also, soap can provide some spreading qualities but will do little to aid in penetration, leaving the majority of your solution exposed on the leaf surface. 2 ADJUVANTS Surfactants ITEM # SIZE PRICE DESCRIPTION ADVANTAGE® Soil Penetrant 184447 1 gal. 117284 2.5 gal. PRICE DESCRIPTION Repellex® Systemic Tablets New Exclusive Technology Repels Deer, Rabbits, Moles, Voles, Gophers, Groundhogs, Dogs and Cats From Ornamental Plants Active Ingredient: Capsaicin and related capsaicinoids. Repellex Systemic Animal Repellent has an exclusive formula to protect ornamental plants, flowers, trees, and shrubs all season long with a single application. Application: Use any time after new growth appears. Do not apply when the plant is dormant or when soil is waterlogged or frozen. These conditions inhibit uptake into the plant. FT How to Apply: Newly transplanted, established and container plants, place tablets in the soil or growing medium of plant. Position 2 - 3 inches away from root crown, and push 1 - 3 inches below the soil surface. When more than one tablet is applied, evenly space them around the plant. Activate the application with irrigation or natural rainfall. Do not over water. A How It Works: Water dissolves this product into the soil, where it is absorbed by roots and moves up throughout the plant. Once absorbed, rain or watering cannot wash off this internal protection. Even new growth is protected against animal browsing for the entire growing season. For effective results, the repellent must distribute throughout the plant. Depending on the size and health of the plant, this may take one week to one month (for very large plants). To protect plants during the uptake, treat with a spray such as Repellex Original Deer & Rabbit Repellent. ITEM # 116898 D R How Much to Apply: Measure the height x width of the plant to the nearest foot (12”). Apply 1 tablet per every square foot of plant (height + width). For large trees, measure the crown only, not including the height of the trunk. Apply once every growing season. SIZE 25 lb. PRICE Baits DESCRIPTION Pocket Gopher Bait 117438 50 lb. Granular preemergents are the most popular due to the convenience of “No Mixing Required.” You don’t need a sprayer, and calibration is much easier with the granular preemergents. Casoron®, Freehand® or Snapshot® would be great choices. Differences: • If you have any runoff, Casoron will not work. This product can runoff into lawns and other areas, causing damage. Some plants do not tolerate Casoron, so you must read the label for plants labeled. Casoron also has strict labeling under DIRECTIONS FOR USE. • Freehand is safe and cost effective. It can not be used around plants grown for food or feed. It will also stain, so sweep surfaces. • Snapshot is the safest to use. It doesn’t run off and is safe around established plants and bulbs. PRICE 165906 165905 0.5 gal. 2.5 gal. 180545 50 lb. DESCRIPTION Casoron 4G Weed and Grass Killer A Dimension® 2EW FT Active Ingredient: 4% Dichlobenil. Casoron 4G makes a “Gas Layer” in the soil which is why it requires 1/2 to 1 inch of overhead watering to thoroughly incorporate granules to a depth of 4 - 6 inches in the soil. This vapor barrier is active for 9 - 10 months and prevents weed seeds, emerging shoots and certain existing weeds from growing through. • For perennial and annual weed control, apply either in early spring before seeds of annual weeds germinate or after cultivation has removed the growing weeds. Distribute granules uniformly over the soil surface. • May be used on the following fruit and nut orchards and nurseries: Apple, blueberry, cherry, grape, pear, filbert, blackberry, raspberry, and cranberry. • May be used on woody ornamentals and shelterbelts, either established or in nurseries. See label for list. • Excellent for driveways, walkways, gravel areas, around buildings and structures, fence lines, under containerized nursery stock, and under asphalt and pool liners. Disadvantages include: • It can run off and kill lawns, plants and other vegetation. • If granules contact wet leaves, it can burn the leaves. • Pine trees, conifers, yews, etc., DO NOT LIKE Casoron 4G, so avoid application and/or runoff around them. • Strict labeling under DIRECTIONS FOR USE: “Do not enter or allow workers to enter the treated area until granules are thoroughly watered in and the soil has dried. Do not enter or allow people or pets to enter the treated area until granules are thoroughly watered in and dried.” The active ingredient can attach to shoes/paws, leaving a trail of dead vegetation. • Do not graze livestock on treated areas. • Do not allow granules to accumulate and come in contact with tree trunks at or below soil line. • Do not use on trees that have been established for less than 6 months. • Application rate: 3 lb. per 1,000 sq. ft. D R Dimension 2EW specialty herbicide provides preemergence and early postemergence control of crabgrass, and season-long control of crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtail, and spurge. Freehand 1.75G (Agency) Active Ingredient: 0.75% Dimethenamid-P and 1% Pendimethalin. The two combined active ingredients inhibit the germinating shoot portion of the susceptible weed seedlings. A small amount of uptake may also occur through the emerging root system of the weed seedling. Efficacy will be improved if application is followed by 1/2 inch of irrigation or rainfall. Apply at 3 lb. per 1,000 sq. ft. Key benefits: • Safe to use around and over the top of “Labeled” established plants. • Can be used under asphalt and pool liners. • Safe around established trees. • Very cost effective. Disadvantages: • Does not control established weeds. • Do not apply on turfgrass or annual bedding plants. • Sweep surfaces to avoid staining. Selective – Turf Herbicides 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is one of the most widely used herbicides in the world today. By stimulating different responses in a plant, depending on the level of concentration, 2,4-D is a regulator for plant growth at low rates and an herbicide at higher rates. The plant’s natural metabolism distorts as 2,4-D functions as a hormone herbicide. Specifically, the plant sugar is prevented from moving to the roots which then starves the plant when the food reserves are used up, resulting in complete dieback within days of application. Weeds controlled: 2,4-D controls many broadleaf weeds in your turf, like dandelions. However, it will not control clover or toadflax. Basic rate: Backpack sprayer and small hand can sprayers: • 3 oz. of 2,4-D per gallon of water. • 1 oz. of R-11 OR 1/4 oz. of SYL-TAC per gallon of water. Containers over 1 gallon are restricted in Eastern Washington only. ITEM # SIZE PRICE DESCRIPTION Base Camp® Amine 4 BASE CAMP AMINE 4 ® 183490 1 gal. 183491 2.5 gal. 183492 30 gal. Invasive Problem Weeds Canada Thistle Canada Thistle is a perennial plant with extensive spreading roots that rapidly form dense colonies. Canada Thistle can also spread by seeds; each shoot can produce more than 100 seeds. Plants grow one to four feet tall and have spiny, lance-shaped leaves. Purple, lavender or sometimes white flowers appear from June to October. The best way to control this weed is by applying effective, systemic herbicides. Milestone is a nonrestricted herbicide that provides excellent control of Canada Thistle when applied pre-bud in early summer and fall. Benefits of Fall Applications with Milestone®: • Fall applications have been found to be extremely effective with Milestone at labeled rates of 5 to 7 ounces per acre. • In the fall, Canada Thistle plants translocate sugars to the roots. At this time, Milestone is also translocated into the roots, killing the roots. • Tank mixing with other herbicides is not necessary. The Milestone itself will control Canada Thistle. • Canada Thistle is more susceptible to herbicides applied in the fall following a frost. 26 Knapweed Most of the knapweed in our area will be either Spotted Knapweed (generally purple flowers) or Diffuse Knapweed (generally white flowers). Spotted Knapweed is listed as an annual weed (comes from seeds each year), but will usually act like a short-lived perennial weed. Spotted Knapweed is biennial, which means the first year of its life it will grow a rosette of leaves and the second year it will bloom. In our climate, however, Spotted Knapweed will grow and produce flowers year after year. Control is relatively easy to attain and several products will work well. The best application timing is spring to early summer on rosettes OR fall after the rains and green-up of the knapweed. The plant should be actively growing. Milestone is an excellent choice for controlling knapweed. This booklet is only a quick reference guide and is subject in all respects to the provisions set forth on page 1. Imidacloprid Imidacloprid is a systemic and foliar insecticide. Applied as a systemic insecticide, imidacloprid is taken up by the roots and moved throughout the plant protecting new growth as it appears. Controls pests like aphids, adelgids, elm leaf beetles, Japanese beetles, leafminers, scale insects, whiteflies and more. Has a long residual, making it possible to apply treatments from late fall to early spring. The best time to apply in this area is early September. This gives the tree time to take the insecticide into its system before going dormant in the winter. When spring arrives, all of the new growth will be protected! HOW TO APPLY (drenching): You will need to determine the diameter of the tree trunk at 4 to 5 feet above the ground. The most accurate way is to purchase the Diameter Pro available at Wilbur-Ellis Company. If you don’t have one, do the following to 30 determine the tree trunk diameter: Standing next to the tree, measure the circumference in inches using this simple calculation: Circumference (inches) X 0.31831 = diameter (inches) Determine the amount of insecticide you will need for the tree and mix in a bucket with required water. Slowly pour mixture around the base of the tree allowing it to soak in. You want to be far enough from the trunk so that the roots will absorb the mixture. Do not go beyond the drip line. Over the next week, water in with a sprinkler for 10-15 minutes once daily to achieve maximum root uptake. If you don’t have a way to water in, apply before a heavy rainfall. LADA® 2F drench rate: 1-2 ounces of product will treat 10 inches of tree diameter. (At the 1-ounce rate, a 32-ounce bottle will treat 320 inches of tree diameter.) LADA 2F foliar rate: 2 ounces per 100 gallons of water. This booklet is only a quick reference guide and is subject in all respects to the provisions set forth on page 1.
