Newsletter Dec 2014 - Famee Furlane of Hamilton
Famèe Furlane of Hamilton “Mandi Furlans” December 2014 A message from our President: Peter Narduzzi The 45th Anniversary Dinner Dance was a tremendous celebration and affirmation of the Famèe Furlane of Hamilton. David Milan, the chairperson of the event and his committee are to be congratulated for organizing such a wonderful culinary and entertainment event. Ivan Zuccolin provided a visual memento with background Friulan music of the club’s personalities, accomplishments and events over the past 45 years. The challenge facing the new Board and members is how to keep the club viable in the future in spite of declining members. At the General Meeting in September the Members approved the revised Constitution. The procedure for electing the Board of Directors was a major change from the previous constitution. As we saw at the November meeting, the various positions on the Board were elected by all of the members. Another important article that was added was a Dissolution clause. This clause was requested by the Canada Revenue Agency. As it stands now upon dissolution the club would select a charitable organization to donate any remaining assets. The Charter of our club which was granted by the Province of Ontario would allow the club to request receipts for income tax purposes from the selected charity upon dissolution. We also could distribute remaining assets equally among our members. Both these actions would require changes in the Constitution. On the occasion of our 45th Anniversary some board members decided to donate a new TV system for the Members’ Hall. A TV with a DVD and a new Satellite Dish have been installed. The Board Members covered all of the costs, including the warranty. The Board was extremely pleased that Mavi Borsato Huang considered becoming the manager of our club. Mavi is able to offer the club stability, experience and knowledge of the Friulan Heritage. Besides being a member of the club she exhibits, initiative, organization and above all a true commitment to the Famèe Furlane of Hamilton. Pet er Nard The Pre uzzi sident in Sedona , Arizon a. In June of 1950, he and his three older sisters, Pia, Lydia and Josephine along with their mother immigrated to Hamilton to join their father. He grew up in “Brightside” an area very close to the steel mills in Hamilton’s north end. After graduation from university and Teachers’ College he spent thirty years teaching and coaching for the Hamilton Roman Catholic School Board. He and his wonderful wife, Nancy, have three children, a daughter in law and three beautiful grandchildren. Besides babysitting, Renato finds time to golf, bowl and play bocce. He and Nancy also enjoy travelling together and dining out, most often at the Famèe Furlane. His involvement in the Famèe Furlane began about ten years ago when his good friend, Renzo Milan, suggested that he become a member of the Board of Directors. During that time he has served as Vice President, President and now Past President of the club. At the time that Renato became president the club was facing a large debt. Renato with determination and hard work guided the club through this difficult period. Renato has chaired Festitalia dinners, represented our club at Friulan Federation Annual General Meetings, served on the golf and bocce committees and regularly helps set up for hall functions. Every Monday morning, he can be found at the Famèe Furlane with the core of hardworking volunteers that do clean up and maintenance in order to keep the grounds and building in good condition. He hopes that more individuals could volunteer occasionally and if that is not possible, to at least attend our club functions. He wishes that the Famèe Furlane continues to prosper in the coming years 2015 Tentative Upcoming Events ~ More Events to follow March 28th ~ Hunter’s Dinner April 15 ~ Bocce Dinner ~ End of Season & Trophies May 10th ~ Mother’s Day Brunch June 21th ~ Father’s Day BBQ Sept 20th ~ Festitalia Oct 24th ~ Vendemmia Dinner Nov 7th ~ Murder Mystery th Our Employees – Waitstaff Stephen Mesicek was born and raised in Hamilton. He came to Canada by himself and arrived in Hamilton in 1951. He had some knowledge of the construction business since his father owned a construction company. He worked at Stelco for two years building the coke ovens. From there he went to Kent Tile where he remained for 25 years until he retired. He was married to a Furlan girl for seven years. His wife died at a young age from cancer. Sergio has always been a visible member of the club. He used his construction knowledge to help with the maintenance of the club whether it was sanding tables or fixing showers. Before his health deteriorated he helped the volunteers on Monday mornings cleaning the hall. Sergio enjoys the friendly atmosphere and the vast spaces surrounding our building. He sees so much potential and hopes that more Furlans become members. It’s our hope that Sergio’s health will improve and that he will be able to spend more time at the club thatbloc he cares so much about.
