ISSUE 63 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Well we’re back! President Dave Maloney Vice President Sylvia Mitchell Past President Bev Jones Secretary Lynda Fischer Treasurer Maureen Harvey Program Committee Jane McAllister Fundraising Committee Myra Sartor Travel Committee Wilda Tressel Membership Committee Sylvia Mitchell Isn't it nice to be back home again (so to speak) at the Centre. Our new ―DIGS‖ are looking good. Visitors regularly remark on the new reception desk as well as the ―cozy‖ look to the now reorganized lounge, complete with fireplace and the café tables and chairs. It has a very comfortable and inviting feel to it. The ladies who provide Friday lunches have told me that they are delighted with the newly expanded kitchen along with it’s enlarged work space, and lots of cupboards. The official re-opening will not take place until Thursday September 11th, which coincides with our monthly social. This promises to be a grand affair with local dignitaries attending along with some special guests who were past board members in years gone by. It is only fitting that we remember those members who worked hard to make the expansion a reality. Wendy Krever is working very hard on preparations for the Gala Night along with the social committee, so expect great entertainment, great food as well as a few surprises. All this of course will happen during our annual Open House week when we will be introducing some new fitness programs and presentations. Make sure to take a look at what we are offering. As for myself, well Joan and I are looking forward to the regular Thursday Afternoon Social Dance, which has been around for about 3 years. Kerry Russelo and Joan Leavens are doing a great job of growing this program that was started by Pauline Barlow. The attendance has more than doubled in the last two years and all the dancers are eager to get back to business in September. Social Committee Reception Pat English Public Relations Julie Conroy Ex-officio Members: Coordinator Wendy Krever 905-873-2601 Ext. 2406 Council Liaison Councillor Jon Hurst 519-853-2015 Sadly we had to say goodbye to a couple of good friends. Real and Jill Tetreault have moved to Oakville and following the Gala Night, Real will no longer be the Social Chair. He will be missed. I know it will be a hard act to follow, but we must find a volunteer or committee of volunteers to take on this role, as it is a very important and successful program. Please consider this rewarding and meaningful position. Dave Maloney, President 2 FROM YOUR COORDINATOR Welcome back to the newly renovated Hillsview Active Living Centre! Thank you for all you work and support. The move back from the Boathouse, Legion and Agricultural Centre was a smooth operation. A big shout out goes to the Board members, volunteers and four aquatic staff for helping get the job done! There were a lot of boxes to unpack but we did get everything into its’ rightful place. Please join us at the Hillsview Active Living Centre-Acton and live our tagline—‖Enjoying Life in Good Company‖. Wendy Krever, Coordinator 3 PUBLIC RELATIONS MEMBERSHIPS As usual there have been lots of occasions for photos and articles in the local papers over the past three months with the renovations, and temporary location. It’s great to be back ―home‖ again in our newly reorganized and renovated centre. I hope you enjoyed reading about Ian & Jane McAllister in the Tanner during seniors month. I would like to write about other members of the Centre next June, which means starting in the winter months. If you know of anyone who has lead an interesting life, please let me know. It’s amazing how many of our members have led very interesting lives. This is the time of year when we start looking forward to shorter days, Fall colours, Thanksgiving and Halloween. We hope that you enjoyed the cooler, showery summer and are looking forward to a new season of programs and events at our beautifully renovated Centre. Julie Conroy, Chair LOOKING FOR A WINTER TRIP? Plans are being made for another trip at the end of January to somewhere warm for 10 days. Last January 35 people enjoyed St. Maartens. This year the vacation spot chosen is Jamaica - Jan 29 to Feb 8th, 2015. The resort is the Bahia Principe at Runaway Bay. Cost will be $2490 per person—all inclusive, including air fare, transfers from airport to resort, all meals and drinks. (price may change if booked later). If you would like more details, please leave a message at the front desk and Julie Conroy will call you. As before, each person will arrange and pay for their own trip through a travel agent in Guelph (Expedia) that has been used previously. Our Open House week is Sept 8th to 12th, where you can bring your family and friends to see our Centre and try some of the programs that will be running during the Fall. Our membership total is currently 330 and we are also looking for ways to increase our membership. Once again this year we will be sharing tables with Town staff at the Acton Fall Fair to increase awareness of our events and programs and to recruit some new members. We will also participate in the Santa Claus Parade. We are planning a New Member’s Tea for Tuesday November 4th. Invitations will be sent out in October to all our new members and we hope that you will come along and bring a friend for some tea and entertainment, to meet the staff and Board members. A reminder that the membership fee for 2015 will be increased to $30. Looking forward to a new season, new programs in our Centre and working and having fun together! FUNDRAISING Hooray! Back home! Isn’t it fantastic? Congratulations to all the builders, designers and organizers on a job well done! Don’t forget your tickets for the Re-Opening Gala Evening! We are back to Fundraising Bingo on Saturday September 27th, starting at 7pm in the community hall. The next one will be Saturday November 8th. Due to the Ice Storm, our supplier is unable to provide us with Poinsettias this year as their supply was badly depleted. Thank you to all the models who posed for our ―Calendar Girls‖ calendar as well as the donors and our photographer, Sandra Timleck. We entertained a good number of people in a few locations throughout Acton, Georgetown and Toronto this summer! Myra Sartor, Chair Sylvia Mitchell, Chair 4 RECEPTION DESK GALS ON THE GO Well here we are back at our Centre and it’s beautiful! Over the summer we have had two long time reception volunteers retire. I would like to thank Marion Storey and Fay Byers for their service and to wish them well in the future. There have been a few bumps with regards to the reception desk, but they will be all sorted out eventually as we settle into our routine. Everyone handled our stay at the Boathouse very well, but I’m sure we are all happy to return ―home‖. Be sure to drop in for coffee and to pick up a book, or just sit and chat in our new lounge. I hope to see you all at one time or another. Also, I’m always looking for volunteers to fill in if needed on the desk. If you are interested and have some time available, please contact me or Heather Beaumont (Volunteer Coordinator at the Centre on Mondays). As you can see by the clip boards and the column in the Tanner, there are several trips planned during the Fall months. On Wednesday September 17th, we will enjoy playing golf at our semiannual tournament at Blue Springs, followed by lunch. Members and friends from Georgetown are invited to join us. We will return to the Grand River Raceway on Monday September 29th, and visit St. Jacobs Market and Crossroads restaurant on October 9th. I would have liked to go to St. Lawrence Market, but the traffic problems have been horrendous over the past few months, so I will wait until next year. Date: Mondays—Oct 6 to Dec 15 Time: 8:30-9:15pm Fee: $98.04 Code: 98021 THE IMPORTANCE OF BALANCE Balance is very important to us at any age, but especially as we get older. Falls resulting from loss can be very serious, potentially causing a hip fracture and associated complications. Sixty-five does not seem all that old, especially for boomer generation that view 65 as the new 55, yet if we do not maintain muscle mass and strength that is exactly what can happen to baby boomer or senior alike. Balance problems can be caused by many things including medications, inner ear problems, blood pressure, illness and foot problems. Another factor that contributes to balance problems is physical inactivity. Muscles make our body move, and the less muscle we have the harder it is to walk up stairs, get up from a chair or quickly change our direction when walking or on an uneven surface such as grass or dirt without losing our balance. Variance in walking speed is related to leg strength, and increased strength has been shown to improve walking endurance and stair-climbing power. Losing muscle can come from lack of activity, and we even lose leg strength because there may be less blood going to the leg muscle as we get older. The good news is that there are many Balance Training interventions that can help prevent falls from a lack of muscle strength and can also reverse age-related decline in the ability to recover from sudden loss of balance using rapid stepping or grasping reactions. There is strong medical evidence that Balance Training can improve balance on both stable and unstable surfaces. Depending on your age and ability, the following methods can be easily added into your daily routine. One-legged stand, heel stand, toe stand, cross-over walk, step-ups Balance board Walking on unstable surfaces Muscle-building leg exercises using progressive ankle weights Tai Chi is an excellent activity to prevent a loss of balance, as are fitness classes that incorporate upright balance activities, lateral movement, and strength exercises. These classes can be found right in your very own Active Living Centre! Research suggests that we are more likely to stick with an activity if it is fun and if we participate in a group, as opposed to doing it on our own. Check out the Active Living programs offered this Fall—FREE ―TRY-IT‖ classes are available. Do something great for yourself...your body will thank you! 11 The Flu Ends With U APPLAUSE VOLUNTEERS Is it a Cold or Influenza (flu)?
