January to March 2012 www.rpcmatters.com EUROPE’S LEADER IN RIGID PLASTIC PACKAGING At the forefront of responsible packaging solutions. MAGIC APPEARANCE FOR QUALITY SKINCARE RANGE PROMOTE YOUR PRODUCT WITH EASYDOSE RPC Bramlage-Wiko’s Magic SL dispenser has been selected to package a new collection of dermatological products for sk:n, the UK’s no 1 skincare clinic. EasyDose from RPC Superfos is an exciting new household container with an integrated dosing system, ensuring exact quantities every time it is used. Cutting food waste sk:n has a reputation for excellence in treating skin conditions with a range of highly effective products which are now on sale in the company’s clinics nationwide as well as larger Boots stores and online. The collection features five treatment areas – cleansing, anti-ageing, repair and protect, anti-blemish and corrective. Working with design house Pentagram, RPC has tailored the Magic SL to create a stylish and user-friendly pack that complements the family image of the other packs in the range which include tubes and jars. The 30ml container is finished with a matt surface and a matt lacquer overcap that reflect the high quality, dermatological nature of the products. The eye-catching decoration for the packs features hot foil stamping and a colour coded band to distinguish the different product types. A key requirement was for the band to be located in exactly the same place so that it matched the other packs in the range to maximise onshelf branding. The Magic SL offers convenient one-handed operation and delivers a 1ml dose for controlled dispensing of the product. “We were looking for a convenient and easy to use dispenser with an attractive appearance that would reflect the premium positioning of our products,” comments Julie Davies, Marketing Director of sk:n. RPC Bramlage-Wiko UK +44 (0) 870 751 6670 “The Magic SL exactly met these criteria and is proving an excellent addition to our range.” [email protected] Its imaginative construction, with an internal partition plate, means the user gets the exact quantity of products such as cereal, detergents, coffee or baby food. Now EasyDose is available at one of Germany’s largest retailers, Tchibo. EasyDose is suitable for any products in powder, granular or pellet form. RPC Superfos delivers EasyDose in two sizes, 1.5L and 2.2L. The lid and plates are available in a multitude of colours and decorations can be added with in-mould labelling. Tchibo was so impressed with the dummy version of EasyDose that it placed an order straight away. The retailer decided to focus on a breakfast theme of orange, yellow and pink for porridge oats, cornflakes and muesli respectively.” The container itself is frosted plastic while the lid, the internal plate for measuring and printed stripes are in a matching colour. At home, EasyDose is easy to use and refill and is dishwasher safe. For brand owners and retailers, it also makes a perfect give-away for consumers, helping to add to product sales, enhancing brand position and consumer loyalty. RPC Superfos Region Nordic Keld Krogh Nielsen from RPC Superfos says: “For Tchibo we have produced EasyDose in three different colours. RPC’S BESPOKE PACK BREATHES LIFE INTO PRO FRESH RPC Containers Market Rasen has created a stylish pocket pack for a lifestyle breath-freshening mint from Lofthouse of Fleetwood, makers of the famous Fisherman’s Friend lozenges. Pro Fresh has been developed to extend the profile of Fisherman’s Friend beyond the brand’s traditional market, with a particular emphasis on a younger demographic. In order to position Pro Fresh effectively in that market, Lofthouse of Fleetwood wanted a bespoke packaging format that would project a stylish image and be compact enough to fit into pockets and handbags. RPC Market Rasen was an ideal choice as it has expertise both as a manufacturer of bespoke containers and in pharmaceutical markets – a sector characterised by the kind of stringent quality control required of the Pro Fresh pack. Working closely with Lofthouse of Fleetwood, RPC Design developed a solution that could carry 30 Pro Fresh pellets. The container body is injection moulded in PP with a living hinge flip-top lid and bore seal neck to achieve the best possible seal. The product design was tested and trialled with twin cavity prototype tools. This allowed the customer to test the product in the market, before investing in custom production tooling. The packs are finished with a shrink sleeve. Pro Fresh contains a unique blend of long lasting breath freshening herbs and is available in Peppermint, Sweet Mint, Lemon & Mint and Blueberry. Following the success of the trial in Asia, it is now also on sale in Norway and Holland and the distinctive pack design plays a central role in the product advertising. “Pro Fresh is an exciting product that is a proven hit with consumers,” says Andrew Broome from Lofthouse of Fleetwood. “RPC Market Rasen understood the brief and delivered at each stage of this project.” [email protected] [email protected] RPC’S THOR POT IS A GLORIOUS! DAIRY CREST LOOKS TO RPC FOR NEW CHILDREN’S CHEESE SNACK PACK The latest entrant into the UK’s buoyant children’s cheese snack market has gone on shelf in a pack from RPC Bebo UK. Part of RPC Bramlage’s standard range and available in four sizes – 50ml, 125ml, 200ml and 350ml – the Clip Jar offers a modern and robust plastic pack that echoes the look of the traditional glass storage jar. The clarity of the PET enables products to be easily visible and together with the jar’s distinctive design help to create a high quality image and strong on-shelf impact and appeal. Individual branding can be achieved through quality decoration including top labelling of the lid and full colour printing. The jar is lightweight, easy to handle and shatterproof, offering consumers valuable convenience and safety benefits in the kitchen. A further advantage is that the jar is re-usable. A metal clasp and hermetic seal ensure product quality and freshness are maintained. “For this project, we wanted to help our customer create an effective on-shelf presence with an attractive, addedvalue pack,” explains Joanne Love, Assistant Brand Weight reduction Manager of Bart Spices. “The Clip Jar from RPC Bramlage combines aesthetics and practicality to deliver an ideal packaging solution.” RPC Bramlage RPC Bramlage-Wiko UK +49 (0) 4442 881 0 +44 (0) 870 751 6670 [email protected] [email protected] RPC BEBO FRANCE CUSTOM POT EXTENDS SHELF LIFE FOR SOUP ON THE GO A leading French food brand has selected a custom pot from RPC Bebo France for the launch of a healthy, organic soup range. Chedds Cheese & Toasties consists of six slices of real mild Cheddar cheese and six mini Melba toasts, foil wrapped for crispness in a specially-designed PP/EVOH pack which is heat sealed. Three snack packs at a time are then sold inside a cardboard sleeve. With parents under continued pressure to offer healthy lunchbox selections, Chedds is the only brand to provide cheese snacks made from 100 per cent mild Cheddar. Dairy Crest has backed Chedds with a £3m advertising campaign, with a view to rivalling the three leading children’s cheese brands, Dairylea, Cheestrings and Babybel. Cathedral City Chedds is in all the major retailers in the UK and sales have been strong since it hit the shelves in August. Dairy Crest is confident that with the backing of the wellestablished and trusted Cathedral City brand, Chedds will stand out from other cheesy snacks for children. The children’s cheese snacking category is currently worth in excess of £185m annually and growing at a rate of 1.5 per cent. RPC Bebo UK +44 (0) 1536 272945 [email protected] Longer shelf life The Bouxwiller site was chosen by Délices de la Mer because of its ability to provide a suitable custom pack rapidly, in accordance with the customer’s short deadline. DIDDEN CONTINUES TO INNOVATE IN RPC SQUEEZE BOTTLE The 400ml microwaveable pot is supplied in a diameter of 95mm and utilises PP/EVOH/PP barrier technology. It has been designed with customised cavities to allow for product sterilisation, delivering an extended shelf life of 12 months. Traditionally prepared cold sauces from Belgian manufacturer Didden are being introduced in a new plastic head-standing squeeze bottle from RPC Kerkrade. RPC provided a complete solution with the supply of the pot, thermoformed cap and the spoon to allow eating on the go. The soup, which is being sold under the popular Bjorg brand name, was launched in October in two flavours – ‘Sweet potato & coconut’ and ‘Minestrone with vegetables & epeutre’. It follows a two-year collaboration between RPC Bebo UK and the UK’s largest dairy processor, Dairy Crest, to develop the packaging for its Cathedral City Chedds Cheese & Toasties. The success of Didden started in 1925 with the production of mustard. Over the years the company has continuously developed, with mayonnaise and other cold sauces added to the range. RPC Bebo France +33 (0) 3 88 71 7800 [email protected] Didden sauces have traditionally been packed in glass jars. However the company noticed the trend for consumers to buy more and more squeeze bottles. Didden contacted RPC Kerkrade and in close co-operation between the engineers of both companies, a 300ml blow-moulded bottle has been developed. Its multilayer PP/EVOH/PP structure provides a high oxygen barrier for longer shelf life. GOOD VIBES PACKED BY RPC SUPERFOS Successful French food producer Michel & Augustin needed packaging with a smile to match its latest off-the-wall product promotion – and UniPak from RPC Superfos was perfect for the task. The company has several major private label customers including Carrefour, Colruyt, Delhaize, Aldi and Lidl. Also Didden products are exported to Holland, RPC Kerkrade Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Luxemburg and France. The custom made container is fitted with a standard Procap 63mm flapper cap in contrasting blue, and features a wide neck and integrated handle for convenient distribution of the salt. The company identified a gap in the French market for yogurt sold in family-size 1kg pots. The pack also needed to offer versatile and colourful decoration possibilities which matched the company’s fun image. for playing at the beach. Also included was a voucher for a drinking yogurt, a cookie as well as a donation to a charity. It was a limited edition and stocks didn’t last long!” Michel & Augustin’s Head of Communication, Christopher (the company doesn’t use surnames), says: “In our eyes it is essential that our customers get a sense of quality when they are in contact with the packaging. He adds: “We felt that RPC Superfos were just as excited as us about the idea and clearly felt like doing something special and extraordinary, just like Michel & Augustin.” “We like the fact that a big pot is economical, environmentally friendly and calls for sharing and enjoying our yogurt in the company of others. Michel & Augustin started in 2005 baking traditional biscuits. The next step was to produce a healthy drinking yogurt called ‘La vache à boire’ (’the cow you can drink’). Yogurt in 1kg and 500g pots followed, and a chocolate mousse has also hit the shelves, also in UniPak. “RPC Superfos gives us all these key benefits, not least an endless range of options for decorating the pots with inmould-labelling. This is important to us, as Michel & Augustin wants packaging to be flashy, funny and different from the rest.” In summer 2011 the UniPak pot was also at the centre of a Michel & Augustin promotional campaign aimed at holidaymakers. Christopher explains: “We sold T-shirts with a print of our brand ‘La vache en pot’ in a UniPak plastic pot. The T-shirt is a great gift for children who could then also use the pot Michel & Augustin has now reached a turnover of more than € 12 million. The products can be found in all major French supermarkets as well as outlets in Belgium, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Japan, USA and Singapore. RPC Superfos Region French +33 (0) 385 32 2755 [email protected] Promotion of the product has seen it go on display at several leading trade shows, using the snooker player Jimmy White (pictured) to further tie in with the brand name. NGS also sponsors White in the UK’s Premier League Snooker competition. The company successfully sells Pure White marine salt in sacks of up to 25kg for bulk users but, particularly following the heavy UK snow in the winter of 2010/11, was looking for an easy-to-use pack more suited to general retail outlets such as supermarkets and garage forecourts. RPC UKSC designed a 3kg pack which is ideally suited for general domestic use, such as de-icing doorsteps, footpaths and driveways. The branding is underpinned by the white plastic and the use of two colourful labels, back and front, which are applied by RPC UKSC during the manufacturing process. NGS imports and supplies high purity sustainable white salt ideal for paths, roads, car parks and highways. The high purity provides a quicker de-icing effect, with anti-caking properties which leave no residue on the ground. It represents a clean, sustainable, alternative to rock salt. Rakesh Ram, General Manager of NGS Ltd, says: “The NGS Pure White de-icing salt range is an innovative breakthrough into the retail sector. We developed packaging for the range to fulfil several criteria: each pack of white marine salt must be easy to carry and handle, and have a pouring system that allows the salt granules to be spread accurately and economically. “The 3kg plastic carton pack not only fulfils these objectives, but also allows us to add attractive and colourful company titles and sales messages.” RPC Containers UKSC +44 (0) 1933 411221 [email protected] WINNING RPC CORBY JAR SHOWS ‘EXEMPLARY INNOVATION’ RPC Containers Corby’s Ultra Retortable Barrier Jar was the winner of the prestigious Horners Bottlemakers Award 2011. The jar is part of RPC Corby’s enhanced range of retortable barrier plastic jars for catering applications which combine a mix of food-safe, long-life and lightweight food storage. The awards organisers said its design strengths, owing to the properties of barrier plastics, were the cost effectiveness and high standard of product protection, allied to enhanced convenience and safety. Typical shelf life is 18 months unopened and once open it is easily resealed and stored in the fridge without the need to transfer the contents into a separate container. Peter Davis, Chairman of the Horners Award Committee said the Ultra Retortable Barrier Jar “demonstrated exemplary innovation and comprehensive product design.” He added: “The panel was unanimous in concluding that the benefits of the product, especially within the catering industry, will help to promote the contribution that good design can make. It is a solid example of the significant role of plastics in wider society.” RPC PAIL PROVIDES CLEAR PATH TO SUCCESS FOR DE-ICING SALTS Protecting food content The winning jar uses a unique construction of thermic ribs which facilitate expansion and contraction during the heating and cooling stages. The product’s widemouth neck and robust shape mean it can easily be hot-filled and processed using existing machinery, while the lightweight construction reduces the amount of packaging used. Michael Stegeman, General Manager of RPC Corby, says: “We are thrilled to have been chosen as the winner of the 2011 Horner’s Bottlemakers Award. We strive constantly to create genuinely innovative products and it is exceptionally gratifying for our work to be recognised in this prestigious way.” This is the second recent accolade for RPC Corby, which was also awarded Bronze in the 2011 Starpack awards for its M&S Pickled Vegetables pack, part of the British Groceries range. RPC Corby +44 (0) 1536 263488 RPC Containers Oakham’s expertise in combining pack manufacture and effective decoration has been recognised by the makers of KelKay De-Icing Salt. A 7.5 litre pail from RPC Oakham is being used to market the clean, white, pure salt designed for the rapid clearance of snow and ice from paths and driveways, to help prevent slipping during wintry conditions. The product also prevents unsightly brown marks being trodden into entranceways and carpets, which can result from other brown rock salts or sand-based products. The 7.5kg pail with a resealable lid is ideal for keeping in a car boot and comes with a handy plastic scoop for easy distribution. It is decorated with a striking two-colour print and RPC Oakham’s ability to deliver a pail with effective decoration provides the added benefit of giving KelKay a strong, visible retail presence. Körrisaft has been the official ketchup of FC St. Pauli in Hamburg since summer 2008. Its curry ketchup was first launched in a glass bottle with a clamp top, but since February 2011 has switched to a standard 520 ml Eclipse multilayer PP bottle, filled at Farmhaus Produktions und Handelsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG in Düsseldorf. STARRING ROLE FOR RPC BLACKBURN’S SNACK POT Symington’s launched a major UK movie tie-in to promote Golden Wonder: The Nation’s Noodle in a Snack Pot from RPC Containers Blackburn. The new plastic bottle not only appeals to a wider audience but also takes into account safety concerns in the football stadium. The bottles feature a special barrier layer which protects the gourmet sauce from excessive oxygen penetration, guaranteeing a longer shelf life. The striking sleeve by Riviera NL-Drachten features the club’s brown and white colours to ensure a strong on-shelf presence. The instant hot noodle snack makers became an official partner for The Inbetweeners movie. The curry ketchup was initially intended as a limited edition but has now become a long-term favourite. Curry ketchup is enjoyed not only in the stadium but makes chips at home a real taste experience. As well as a special mixture of spices, the ketchup is flavoured with caramel, aloe vera juice and chillies. Golden Wonder: The Nation’s Noodle was launched in 2009, followed in 2010 by The Nation’s Normous Noodle, 25 per cent larger than the standard size. In parallel with the introduction of the squeeze bottle, the ketchup has an expanded sales network including Metro Deutschland, REWE, Edeka and GLOBUS. The visual appeal of the brand was strengthened by RPC Blackburn’s use of distinctive black polypropylene and Golden Wonder: The Nation’s Noodle is already worth in excess of £8 million less than three years since its launch. The 500ml version, launched in 2011, has proved highly popular and the range is now even more versatile, with the company witnessing growing interest in the 250ml size ideal for mustards, sauces and dressings. Production of the bottles is taking place at three RPC plants - Corby (UK), Kerkrade (Netherlands) and Kutenholz (Germany). Caps, including a non-drip option, are manufactured by RPC Halstead. The larger 750ml variety is also in high demand for a range of household products, and is suitable for a variety of applications. The Euro Squeeze range is manufactured in PP using a multi-layer process with a special barrier layer, protecting contents against the excessive penetration of oxygen and water vapour. The bottles are suitable for hot filling and can be autoclaved at up to 120°C. Longer shelf life RPC Containers UK Injection Moulding is supplying 2.5 and 5 litre paint cans and 10 litre pails as part of the launch of new-look own brand products for Jewson, the UK’s leading supplier of sustainable timber and building materials. The new packaging, which features loyal Jewson customer Shane Wood, has been developed to clearly convey the quality of the product inside. Natalie Davenport, Private Label Manager at Jewson comments: “The new packaging uses colour coding, icons and product information to make it easy for our customers to recognise the quality and benefits of the product and choose the correct product for their job.” As part of this process the RPC packs, which are produced at the company’s RPC Barplas site in Bradford, feature enhanced decoration using colour offset litho printing to create an effective presence and customer appeal on-shelf. The cap design allows the bottles to stand inverted and the product to be squeezed out easily through different sizes of openings, helping to ensure correct dosing. Another advantage is that the cap sizes are allocated proportionally to the bottle sizes, offering a better cost ratio for the total pack. The new designs include an eye-catching vignette effect showing Shane Wood decorating together with graduated blue shading that ensures that the Jewson brand and product name stand out. Stacking containers normally require a deep indent so the cap fits into the base of the one above, and to have flat faces on the top and base. The Cuprinol pack, for AkzoNobel, utilised a complex mould design not normally available on the type of blow moulding machines used to make retail packs of this size in HDPE. A new handle was also necessary due to the restricted shape of the top of the container. This gave the opportunity to significantly reduce the amount of material used. The new factory, in a former truck axle assembly plant, has been fitted with equipment to minimise its carbon footprint, by reducing electricity and water consumption, and maximise safety for the 122 employees. machines in May 2011. To avoid production stoppages, machines were put back into action as soon as they were reinstalled and until the end of June the two sites were in simultaneous operation. The layout means no forklift trucks are needed in the production area. Lifting tables have been installed, and an air treatment system maintains a controlled pressure and temperature. Vincent Dumange, Production Manager, says: “It has been a very busy period for the RPC team to ensure a smooth restart and thanks to the efforts of all employees it has been managed with success and without major disruption to customers.” The new factory is in an industrial area around 8km from the former site, which was in the city centre of Troyes. Following six months of preparation, RPC began to transfer The injection moulded polypropylene handle, manufactured by RPC Market Rasen, was designed to fit into the limited space between the cap and inner face of the top upstand, and this area was shaped so that when on pallets, the handle laid horizontally and allowed containers to fit together on the pallet. Instead, a new base allowed the mould to open normally and create a lateral location for the neck. This, together with simple top upstands and base indents provided the location for the stacked packs. described it as ‘radical’ and noted that the pack enabled retailers to maximise space on-shelf.” In the same category, there were shortlisted entries for RPC Blackburn for SunPat Peanut Butter, RPC Oakham’s Supertainer and RPC Corby for M&S Pickled Vegetables. The SunPat Peanut Butter pack was also shortlisted for Best Re-Packaging of a Brand. Reduced carbon footprint RPC Cobelplast-Montonate has opened a line dedicated to the production of extruded PET foil from recycled material – and reduced energy consumption by around 30 per cent in the process. The line, which resumed production in September, is now equipped with a co-rotating twin screw extruder and a high-efficiency melt filtration system. It has the potential to produce more than 25 tons per day using recycled PET and bottle flakes as the raw material. The redesign means RPC Cobelplast Montonate is ideally placed to take advantage of the possibilities of producing food-contact PET foil directly from postconsumer flakes under EU Regulation 282/2008, provided that the flakes have been cleared of any possible contamination. Pictured (l-r): Josh Brooks (Editor, Packaging News), Stuart Beecher (AkzoNobel), Jim Dale (RPC Design), Tony Hawks (Compere). The high decontamination potential of the co-rotating twin screw extruder is coupled with a high efficiency degassing device, based on a vacuum pump, and an additional cleaning process. The project is now waiting for approval from the European Food Safety Authority. The refurbished line is also energy efficient, with an estimated saving of roughly 30 per cent. Power consumption, including the chiller/water refrigerator is 0.480 kwh/kg, against 0.710 kwh/kg previously.
