Citizens in Lethbridge appreciate the rich quality of life in our
city. Thanks to Wayne Gretzky and all the participants and
sponsors of today’s conference for offering their experience
and knowledge so we can all continue to build Lethbridge as a
great place to live, learn, visit, invest and do business.
%
Of Lethbridge residents say the overall
quality of life in Lethbridge is very good or good.*
A couple more interesting facts: The population of our
city has grown 35% since 1999 and Lethbridge building
permit values reached $247 million in 2013, the highest on
record since tracking began in 1962. As we pass the 100,000
population mark in the next few years, our many businesses
and industries will need the best environment for continued
success. By working with our partners throughout the city,
Economic Development Lethbridge is building on the idea of a
‘first-class small city’ for the future.
Over the months ahead, we’ll be asking for community
input to help define what a first-class small city is and how
we can support making that happen. We’re starting the
conversation today at ‘Greatness in Leadership’ so send us
your thoughts at #firstclassYQL and join in!
*Actually it was 98% in the City of Lethbridge 2014 Community Satisfaction Survey by
Ipsos Reid, but hey, the Great One is in town so ‘almost 99’ seemed like the right thing to do!
The next time you travel to attend a business meeting or
event, consider the advantages of having Lethbridge as
the host city.
With meeting and event site options available at many of our
hotels and unique venues that showcase the heritage and
culture in the region, there is sure to be a choice that will
create a memorable experience for your fellow delegates.
At Economic Development Lethbridge, we have an in-depth
understanding of local industry as well as the tools and
resources available to get you started on the path towards
a successful event. And, we’ll continue to support you
throughout the process.

Lessons from Disney U:
Creating a Culture of Excellence
Doug Lipp, the author of Disney U
and the former head of Training at
Disney’s Corporate headquarters,
is a world-renowned speaker and
acclaimed expert on value-based
corporate culture, customer service,
leadership, change management and
global competitiveness.
Doug enjoyed a unique career with
Disney, beginning in 1981, and was
fast-tracked into an exclusive Disney
management training program,
where he was quickly promoted to
a leadership role in the prestigious
Disney University.
During this time, Tokyo Disneyland
(TDL) was in its initial stages of
development. It was vital that the
“Disney Way” be implemented
in its first theme park overseas.
Doug was chosen to help train
visiting Japanese executives in this
philosophy before TDL opened. For
two years, Doug helped manage
both the construction and operations
phases of TDL, including hiring and
training more than 4,000 Japanese
employees. Doug later penned the
first of seven books titled The Success
of Tokyo Disneyland. The highly
acclaimed book is one of the first
to address the effects of culture on
business.
Jobs, Skills, Training
and Labour
Disney Corporate
After completion of TDL
in 1983, Doug returned
to Disney’s headquarters
to lead corporate training
initiatives. At the time, Disney
was undergoing tumultuous
change. Not only was the
company preparing to release
its first-ever PG-rated movie,
but it was also experiencing
change in leadership, away
from a family-led business.
Disney was threatened by
hostile corporate raiders,
and the leadership team was under
constant attack. Eventually, Michael
Eisner stepped in as CEO, joined by
COO Frank Wells.
Doug continued to work at Disney’s
corporate office during this period of
new leadership and strategic growth.
The new Disney strove to cater to
a broader audience, developing
a product line to appeal to both
youngsters and adults —from The
Little Mermaid and Toy Story to Pretty
Woman and ESPN. Eisner and Wells
demonstrated an ability to respect the
company legacy and brand, while also
creating new markets. Doug worked
alongside Disney’s leadership team,
where he witnessed these strategic
developments first-hand. When Doug
speaks about “Disney,”“customer
service,” and “change,” he brings an
intimate perspective from a time of
historical significance at Disney.
GREATNESS IN LEADERSHIP
The Birth of G. Douglas Lipp
& Associates
Doug’s entrepreneurial spirit
overtook him-again! In 1993, The
Pebble Beach Company contacted
Doug to lead a
30-day “Disney-esque” customer
service training initiative. After
successfully completing this contract,
Doug established his own training
and consulting firm. G. Douglas Lipp
& Associates.
Doug and his wife, Pam, have grown

more than 20 years. Pam oversees

Doug hits the road on consulting and
speaking engagements.
5 GREAT LESSONS FROM BOB NICHOLSON
16 Years Leading Hockey Canada
1. Put good people around you
4. Even when it’s hard, try to find balance
“Our last Olympics was a perfect example with people
like Steve Yzerman and Mike Babcock, every staff person
was involved in so many areas that’s how you put a great
group together and that’s how you have fun and also win.”
“You have to have a really supportive family. At times
you get so engulfed in it you lose connection with
friends. That’s got to be important because there has to
be some balance in your life. You have to carve out your
own personal time. I’m not real good at that, (laughs). In
today’s world you can go 24/7 and still have lots to do, so
you have to realize that.”
2. Don’t be afraid to change your mind
“The first time I met Steve Yzerman he changed my
mind. He was so passionate, he thought that he could do
a lot better job than he did in Vancouver. He gave me the
reasons why and he really wanted the challenge to try
and go compete in Russia. That’s where it started.”
3. Create a great network
“We were not in very good financial shape. We had to
really look at putting together a good business plan
and not rely on government. We had to sit around and
wait for government to give us our dollars. We really
developed an overall strategy for sponsorship. I think the
other key is we really reached out to more stakeholders
at the International Ice Hockey Federation, the NHL,
Canadian Hockey League and all of our branches and
then really put together a comprehensive program for
hockey in the country and around the world.”
5. Use others to bring change
“There’s always resistance in hockey in our country no
matter what. That’s why you make sure to get some of
the most knowledgeable people in hockey around you
on those type of ideas. If you have good people selling
quality programs it doesn’t take too long until people
want to become part of it. It was a lot of work by a lot
of people and making sure that you buy a lot of people
into it.”

WAYNE GRETZKY
The Great One on Leadership
Dave Sandford/Hockey Hall of Fame
Moderated by Bob NIcholson
A product of Brantford, Ontario,
Wayne Gretzky was born in January
26, 1961. By the age of 2, his father
had Wayne on skates and by 5 he was
a local attraction.
The making of a superstar was born.
Wayne Gretzky was playing and
excelling in the game of hockey with
players twice his age and height.
A record that is still held today has
Gretzky scoring 310 goals with
his Novice team. By the 1976-77
season he had caught the eyes of
the Ontario Hockey Association.
He played three games with the
Peterborough Petes as an underage
player before joining the Sault Ste.
Marie Greyhounds a year later.
Wayne Gretzky turned professional
at the age of 17 with the Indianapolis
Racers of the World Hockey
Association. After eight games
Gretzky was traded to the Edmonton
Oilers...and “The Great One” had
arrived. Following the merge of the
two professional leagues (WHA and
NHL), Wayne Gretzky became the talk
of hockey rinks around the world.
During the 1980’s, Gretzky won
individual awards which included
the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most
valuable player nine times, as well as
leading the league in scoring seven
times. While an Edmonton Oiler,
Gretzky re-wrote the record book in
the NHL (by the time he retired he
held over 60 NHL records).
Following the 1987-88 season,
Gretzky was traded to the Los
Angeles Kings. Gretzky had an
immediate impact not only with his
new team, but also with hockey in
the United States. Gretzky continued
to dominate the league, and led
his Kings to the Stanley Cup Finals
during the Stanley Cup Centennial
year in 1993.
After a brief stint in St. Louis during
the latter part of the 1995-96
season, Gretzky finished his career
on Broadway in New York. He spent
three years as a Ranger before
GREATNESS IN LEADERSHIP
retiring following an emotional
farewell speech in front of his
beloved fans at the conclusion of the
regular season in 1999.
Along with his four Stanley Cup rings
he won with the Oilers, Gretzky’s
award cabinet includes Lester B.
Pearson Trophies (as MVP of the
league voted by the players), Lady
Byng Trophies (as the leagues most
gentlemanly player) along with a
host of other trophies and awards
from All Star games and International
tournaments and events.
But as important, Wayne Gretzky
attended banquets and performed
charity work. He signed autographs
and put smiles on a million children’s
faces merely by being friendly and
accommodating. As great as he
was on the ice, he was even more
outstanding as an ambassador, a
hockey humanitarian, a lover of the
game and of life. Gretzky’s induction
into the Hockey Hall of Fame on
November 22, 1999 confirms his
place in society not only as one of the
greatest players to represent the NHL
but also one of the finest men hockey
has ever known.

team.

A Pacific Institute Success Story
“I told him I’d do it with one condition: If the
Oilers won the Stanley Cup,he’d pay me double...”
The Edmonton Oilers ownership had made the near-fatal mistake of trading
away Wayne Gretzky, Canadian hockey’s “national resource.” The next year, the
team found itself in 3rd place in its division, failed in the first playoff round,
and were eliminated. Even with a talented team, after two consecutive Stanley
Cup wins, they did not deliver. Eager to change the situation, Oilers owner
Peter Pocklington called on Lou Tice, of The Pacific Institute, to help. “I told
him I’d do it, with one condition.” relates Lou. “If the Oilers won the Stanley
Cup, he’d pay me double. I spent many days with the team members, and they
uncovered the attitudes that were keeping them from winning. The team went
from the doldrums to the top, and I got paid double!”
