WELCOME TO WINDSOR ESSEX
Every trip begins with a reason. As home to a diverse array of cultural and heritage attractions, world-class gaming and
entertainment, award-winning wineries, and the natural beauty of Canada’s southernmost landscapes, we have plenty of
reasons why you’ll love this place.
Step back in time to the infamous days of Prohibition with a tour at the Canadian Club Brand Centre. Explore Hiram
Walker’s original Speakeasy room, where Al Capone conducted business in secret. Learn about whisky making and, of
course, raise a glass and sample some of Canadian Club’s finest.
Looking for legendary excitement and entertainment? Then a visit to the routinely spectacular Caesars Windsor is your
best bet. As Canada’s largest casino resort destination, Caesars Windsor is where you’ll always find your thrill with
non-stop gaming, big-name performances, stellar service, and five-star accommodations.
If you’re a nature lover, our great outdoors is a real breath of fresh air. Pedal or hike along our scenic waterfront and
forest trails; bring your binoculars and see for yourself why this is one of the top birding destinations in North America;
take a swing on one of our championship golf courses, or just hit the beach and bask in our glorious southern warmth.
Finally, no visit here is complete without indulging in our region’s eclectic food and wine. Clustered along Lake Erie’s
North Shore, our nearly 20 award-winning wineries will leave you toasting for more, while our dining scene offers
practically anything you could possibly crave. From vineyard to bottle and farm to fork, there’s always something
delicious on the table here.
We know every visitor is different, but no matter what you’re looking for, we are confident you will find your own reasons
to love Windsor Essex Pelee Island!

Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island is the official Destination
Marketing Organization (DMO) for the regional tourism industry.
We are a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to promoting
and selling Windsor, Essex County, and Pelee Island as a remarkable
destination for tourists, convention goers, and business travellers.
About the cover: Evoking the intriguing and often colourful history of Prohibition, our cover image conjures this bygone era of
legendary characters, such as Hiram Walker and his frequent customer, Al Capone. Those days are long gone now, but when you step
inside the Canadian Club Brand Centre’s original “Speakeasy Room,” and raise a tumbler of the celebrated whisky, it’s not hard to feel
the spirits lingering on.

PROHIBITION
During the Prohibition era, the flow of Canadian booze across the Detroit River kept American speakeasies and blind
pigs well stocked. From 1920 to 1933, rum running reached epic proportions with Windsor serving as a major smuggling
point. It’s estimated that as much as 75% of the alcohol consumed in America during this period was transported on
waterways between Windsor and Detroit.
Today, the “spirits” of this colourful era in history come alive at the Canadian Club Brand Centre. Located on the
waterfront in the heart of Olde Walkerville, the Canadian Club Brand Centre offers tours designed to give you a vivid
picture of Prohibition and key figures such as Hiram Walker and Al Capone. The 1½ hour tour takes
you back in time, exploring Walker and his distilling empire, including his friendships with prominent
figures such as Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. Walk through the basement Speak Easy Room, where
meetings were held with Al Capone and The Purple Gang, visit Hiram’s private Sampling Room,
view his collection of Canadian art featuring works from the Group of Seven and, of course, enjoy a
formal whisky tasting of Canadian Club’s finest.
The Rum Runners Tour in Windsor is another
fun and unique way to experience Prohibition.
You’ll be immersed in the Roaring Twenties as
you cruise on a private tour bus, visiting
local rum running landmarks such
as speakeasies and mansions, while
costumed actors share stories about
bootlegging and secret hideouts.
The tour includes dinner and
entertainment.

BLACK HISTORY
For many American slaves, Windsor Essex offered what
they yearned for most: a new life of freedom. Our
region played a pivotal role in the Underground Railroad
movement, helping thousands escape the brutality of
slavery. Beginning in 1804, the Underground Railroad
movement worked to help slaves flee from their owners.
The Underground Railroad consisted of a secretive
network of sympathetic people who helped hide and move
slaves as far north as Canada where they could live freely.
Throughout our region, the history and heritage of this
era is honoured and celebrated. Get a sense of the heroic
struggle endured by slaves – men, women, and children –
at the John Freeman Walls Historic Site & Underground
Railroad Museum. Step back in time and into the paths,
cabins, parks, and churches used by slaves in their
harrowing escape. See the inspiring exhibit of artifacts
at the Black Museum highlighting the journey and many
contributions of African Canadians.
FORT MALDEN NATIONAL
HISTORIC SITE
For over 200 years, Fort Malden National Historic
Site of Canada has preserved our distinct history. The
site covers over 4.5 hectares (11 acres) on the banks of
the Detroit River and includes remnants of the War of
1812 battlefield, as well as restored and furnished 1819
brick barracks. It has functioned as an army garrison,
British Indian Department post, dockyard in King’s Navy
Yard, and was the meeting place between First Nations
Shawnee Chief Tecumseh and British General Brock.
The War of 1812 galvanized the French and English of
Upper Canada in unity as they resisted American forces
trying to invade the British province. Battles were fought
relentlessly on land and water until the American and the
British governments finally signed the Treaty of Ghent on
Christmas Eve in 1814. Shawnee Chief Tecumseh and the
First Nations Confederacy allied with the British forces
and were promised the establishment of a neutral Indian
zone when the war ended, but this pledge was broken
when the Treaty of Ghent was signed.

Antique, rare, and classic vehicles and other historical
artifacts are on display at the Canadian Transportation

Windsor Symphony Orchestra
A Georgian-style house built just off the edge of the
Detroit River in 1812, the Francois Baby House played
a special role in our history. Known today as Windsor’s
Community Museum, the property was once invaded by
the American Army, and subsequently, the British during
the War of 1812. It has over 15,000 artifacts, including
archeological material dating to 3,000 B.C.
A 19th century courthouse and jail (‘gaol’ as it was
known), Mackenzie Hall still stands on Sandwich Street.
Built in 1855-56 by Alexander Mackenzie, the
second Prime Minister of Canada, it was the county
courthouse until 1963. Self-guided and group-led
tours are available.
Harkening back to 1904, Ford City in the Olde
Walkerville area is where Henry Ford’s iconic “letter
models” were first built in Canada. Originally, these
vehicles were assembled in small shops that didn’t even
have electricity, but with the rising popularity of Ford’s
cars it wasn’t long before a full-scale assembly operation
was set up. Explore this rich automotive legacy with one of
our scenic driving tours, including the Henry Ford Driving
Tour and the Route 1812 Driving Tour. Get details and

FOOD
Craving an amazing culinary experience? Our menu of options spans virtually every type of
cuisine with authentic ethnic flavors ranging from Italian to Indian, Middle Eastern to Mexican,
and just about anything else you could possibly be in the mood for.
Stroll through Erie Street and indulge in some of the best pasta, pizza, and panini you can get
without crossing the ocean. Feed your appetite for the exotic in Chinatown and Little Vietnam
along Wyandotte Street West in Windsor. Further down the road, in the neighbourhoods of
Wyandotte Street East, feast on Middle Eastern delights such as shish tawook, fattoush, and
tabouli. For more traditional fare and a pint or two, stop into one of our historic pubs in
Olde Walkerville or Sandwich Town.
In Windsor Essex, restaurants and chefs are committed to a “farm to fork” approach. They use locally sourced
ingredients whenever possible, taking advantage of our abundant agricultural bounty. Seek out one-of-a-kind foodie
experiences that are so authentic you can’t imagine them being anywhere
else. The biological diversity and vast mosaic of natural areas, including
open waters, wetlands and lush farmlands, make this area one of the most
agriculturally productive regions in the country. With that comes a passion
for all things local and authentic.
Beyond the unmatched freshness, there’s also a sense of pride and passion
that comes from sourcing local. In restaurants like Rino’s Kitchen, a
rustic downtown Windsor gastropub in a 100-year old heritage house,
you’ll discover flavourfully creative dishes that not only incorporate but
celebrate our region’s farmers, butchers, and bakers.

LOCAL
All throughout our region, there’s one thing you’ll quickly discover: a love of great food.
Maybe that’s because we’re home to one of the most diverse and productive agricultural areas in
Canada. Our fields grow an abundant bounty of fruits and vegetables, everything from apples and
berries to tomatoes and zucchini, while our farms naturally produce dairy and raise livestock.
The fresh harvest is yours for the picking at farm gate and roadside stands throughout the county.
For even more local selection, you simply can’t beat one of our many farmers’ markets, where you’ll
also find award-winning regional wines, artisanal breads and much more. With so much grown and
produced here, it’s no wonder our chefs love using local ingredients to create their menus.
For freshness and flavour, it just doesn’t get any better. The proof is on the plate!

CYCLING
Whether you’re an avid cyclist or a casual rider, strap on your helmet and flex
your pedal power. As a peninsula, our region offers some of the best waterfront
cycling trails in the province, including the Windsor Riverfront Trail and
the Chrysler Greenway Trail. Beginning at the foot of the Ambassador
Bridge, this smoothly paved trail winds along the Detroit River for eight
scenic kilometres with stunning views of the Detroit skyline. Along the way,
explore the internationally acclaimed Windsor Sculpture Park and beautifully
landscaped grounds such as Dieppe Gardens in downtown Windsor.
Looking to really get away from it all? Hop on the ferry to Pelee Island and
explore the serenity and beauty of this natural gem. The island offers 34
kilometres of on-road bicycle trails, ten kilometres of multi-use trails, and
five kilometres of hiking trails. This pristine and protected environment
has an abundance of plants and animals, as well as rare migratory birds
and butterflies. The island’s trails provide easy access to beaches, forests,
sand dunes, marshes, and alvars found nowhere else in Canada. Cultural
heritage attractions include the Pelee Island Heritage Centre, Pelee Island
Lighthouse, and Pelee Island Winery (Canada’s oldest estate winery).
For longer excursions, ride our portion of the Waterfront Trail; for more details,
visit www.waterfronttrail.org.

BIRDING
POINT PELEE NATIONAL PARK
Why do ten’s of
thousands of birders
flock here each year?
There are all kinds of
feathered reasons.
In fact, our region is
a world-renowned
birding destination,
and one of the top
“hot spots” in North
America. Each spring
and fall, over 380
species of rare and
migratory birds make
their way to the
natural sanctuary of
our marshes, ponds,
lakes, rivers, beaches,
and shorelines.
300,000 people a year can’t be wrong. Add your
footprints along the beach to Canada’s most southerly
point. Picnic along the pristine 20-kilometre Lake Erie
beach while the waves gently roll ashore. Stroll along
the Marsh Boardwalk or paddle through its meandering
waters. Lined with cattails, the half-mile boardwalk puts
you in the heart of marsh wildlife. Climb to the top of the
three-story observation tower for a panoramic view of
the grand marsh oasis.
Point Pelee National
Park, at our southern
tip, is Canada’s
warbler capital and
ranks in the top 10
birding destinations
across North
America. Over 80% of bird species recorded in Ontario
have been seen and heard here. Witnessing migration
at Point Pelee National Park is something you won’t
soon forget, with forests, savannahs, and marshlands
providing the perfect backdrop for the flurry of colourful
birds. Hike the trails through Carolinian Forest and
enjoy the thrill of the hunt for elusive species rarely
found elsewhere in Canada! From herons to sparrows
and sandpipers to warblers, you never know what you’ll
find at Point Pelee. For birding at its best, don’t miss the
popular Festival of Birds each May, drawing thousands of
enthusiasts from around the world.
GOLF
In September, the Festival of Hawks at Holiday
Beach Conservation Area draws big crowds, with rare
and amazing bird sightings, as well as dragonfly hikes,
butterfly tagging, and more. You can watch hawks,
vultures, eagles, falcons, and other
spectacular birds of prey as
they stop along their
migration route. And
no trip here is complete
without a visit to the
world-renowned Jack
Miner Migratory Bird
Sanctuary in Kingsville.

Have your binoculars ready to catch a glimpse of a
Knocking Woodpecker or any of the other 380 species of
birds recorded in Point Pelee’s lush tangle of Carolinian
forest. During the Monarch Butterfly Migration in
September, be mesmerized by thousands of butterflies
fluttering all around. And don’t forget to look down
because more than 27 species of reptiles, 20 species
of amphibians, and 50 species of spiders also call Point
Pelee National Park home.

PELEE ISLAND
Walk, ride, or drive onto one of two ferries to Pelee
Island. It’s only a 90-minute journey across the lake from
the mainland to the island, but it feels a world away. Stay
a night or two – maybe even three – and experience this
unique oasis. You’ll find nature trails, pristine beaches,
charming B&Bs, and Canada’s largest estate-owned
winery, Pelee Island Winery.
FISHING
Surrounded by three major bodies
of water, our region is a big lure for
fishing enthusiasts. Muskie, Walleye,
Bass, and Steelhead swim fat and plentiful
in Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, and the Detroit
River. We are recognized as “The Muskie Capital
of Canada,” while Lake Erie is brimming with
Yellow Perch and Rainbow Trout. In July and
February, Canadian residents can take advantage
of license-free fishing during the annual Ontario
Family Fishing Weekends. Our milder climate also allows
for fishing year-round.
MOTORCYCLE ROUTES
Get your motor runnin’ and head out on the highway
to Windsor Essex. We’re proud to be part of the
2015 Cruise the Coast Motorcycle Route stretching
along Ontario’s South Coast. Kick it into gear and
ride the open road passing by lush forests, farm fields,
sprawling vineyards, and shimmering waterways which
include numerous points of interest in between.

ECO-TOURISM
With literally thousands of acres of green space and
over 200 parks woven into our communities and
neighbourhoods, there is no shortage of reasons to get
outside. Walk, run, blade, or bike the riverfront paths.
Traverse the urban, suburban, or naturalized parkland of
the Ganatchio Trail, Malden Park, Windsor’s Riverfront,
and Chrysler Canada Greenway.

“We were amazed at how many pieces the gallery
actually has. With almost 4,000 paintings,
sculptures, and works on paper, we could’ve spent
a whole month there. Even the building itself is a
modern work-of-art with soaring floor-to-ceiling
windows and spectacular views of the riverfront.”
Reason
#
“The museum is massive with 25,000 square
feet of space displaying practically every mode
of transportation from horse-drawn carts and
carriages to fully restored Ford Model Ts, classic
muscle cars, and hot-rods. It’s like a gear head’s
dream garage.”

“There’s nothing else quite like Colasanti’s. They’ve
got a petting farm, miniature golf, amusement
rides, arcade, and a full restaurant. It’s one of the
best and most affordable family attractions around.
Make sure you try the hot homemade donuts and
pure apple cider – delicious!”

DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS
THE TREASURES INSIDE ARE ONLY MATCHED
BY WHAT YOU CAN FIND JUST AROUND THE CORNER.
AMERICA’S GREAT COMEBACK CITY.
Cars | Culture | Gaming | Music | Sports

Few things compare to the Detroit Institute of Arts’ sun-soaked Rivera Court, but the things that do
can be found just a few feet away, among the DIA’s collection of masterpieces. When the museum
doors close, Detroit is always open, and its culture, nightlife and events are just waiting to be discovered.
Dine at a fine establishment like Michael Symon’s Roast, then take in a show at the magnificent Fox Theatre.
Or take in a baseball game and grab a coney dog. Whatever your tastes, in The D, amazing is waiting around
every corner. Discover Detroit, America’s great comeback city. View Janice’s story at visitdetroit.com/janice.
