Place Bell
Thanks to the Bleu Blanc Bouge program of the Montreal
Canadiens Children’s Foundation, Laval will have its own
refrigerated, outdoor, multi-sports skating rink. This new
infrastructure, which will contribute toward improving the
quality of life of thousands of young Laval residents, will be set
up at Émile Park in winter 2016. Excellent news for residents
in the neighbourhood!
Built according to National Hockey League standards, the
skating rink will be a gathering place for events, get-togethers
and physical activities. From late November to mid-March, Laval
residents will have the opportunity to use the refrigerated
rink, while various sports like basketball and ball hockey will
be offered there in the spring and fall.

A New Public Square at City Hall
The imposing Place Bell project is making good progress! A
few months after the ground-breaking ceremony, the turnkey
project is advancing at a steady pace, with the design and
construction making headway at the same time, requiring
strict management controls. At the worksite, four cranes and
nearly 400 employees are bustling about every day, building
this new centre where—starting in 2017—residents will be
able to watch hockey games and big shows at the 10,000-seat
amphitheatre. Place Bell will also house an Olympic skating
rink and a community rink to practise sports like hockey, speed
skating and figure skating.

Vivre à Laval — summer 2015
Mayor Marc Demers announced last March that within Laval’s
50th anniversary celebrations, work will be carried out between
now and this fall in order to enhance and revitalize the grounds
at City Hall. An investment of $1.25 million will be made to set
up a public space with a square for gatherings, a fountain to
add vitality and urban furniture to encourage people to relax
at the site. To liven up the premises, the projection of a digital
work of art is planned against the western wall of City Hall.
Architectural lighting will set off the building by highlighting
its special features.

Dear Residents:
The summer of Laval’s 50th anniversary will be a season
of celebrations that I want to share with you all. I am
therefore inviting you to one of the 24 free presentations
of the big water and light show: Insula. L’histoire d’une
île, June 24 - August 6 at Centropolis. I will be there on a
regular basis and I look forward to having the opportunity
of meeting you there.
August 6 will mark Laval’s anniversary. Of course, we will
be celebrating those 50 years of ours. The festivities will
get under way in the afternoon with an official ceremony
at City Hall. In addition to various Laval personalities,
I will have the pleasure of hosting some fifty residents
selected at random for the occasion. Turn to page 18 of
this issue of Vivre à Laval to find out how to take part in
the “Bonne fête, Laval” contest. The festivities will continue
on at Centropolis early in the evening, where we will
share a huge cake, before the concert by the Orchestre
symphonique de Laval and the final presentation of Insula.

Over the past few months, through the Repensons Laval
consultation process, we have developed a strategic vision
inspired by the aspirations expressed by the entire Laval
community. I invite you to familiarize yourself with this
vision called “Laval, urban in nature”. We have presented
it to you on the following pages...
Also through Repensons Laval, you will have the chance
to take part in the revision of our land-use planning and
development plan, a process long-awaited in Laval. This
document will guide our city toward a common vision of
the organization of the vast territory of île Jésus. The first
series of consultations were held this spring and more
meetings are scheduled for the fall. I hope to have the
chance to hear your views there.

Strategic Vision
Strategic Vision: Laval, Urban in Nature in 2035
Laval Mayor Marc Demers enthusiastically unveiled the Laval 2035, Urban in Nature strategic vision. Straightaway,
Mayor Demers made a point of explaining that this vision, which will guide the City’s development for the next
20 years, is the outcome of a vast participatory process.
A vision, a city: urban in nature
Despite the rapid urbanization in the last century, nature
is still ever present in Laval. By rallying residents, public
organizations and business people around green solutions,
the Urban in nature vision offers Laval high potential for
social, cultural and economic development. As pointed out
by Serge Lamontagne, the City’s Manager: “This vision will
enable our municipality to enhance its main assets, to be
a genuine driving force behind its development, capable
of producing structuring projects.”
A vision to take up Laval’s challenges
“Laval is enjoying rapid growth,” points out Mayor
Marc Demers. “It is also a city that is demonstrating its
will to develop, making major changes to its methods
and procedures.” By projecting an image of “urban in
nature”, Laval wants to preserve its natural environments,
add greener y to its urban spaces and vitality to its
neighbourhoods, encourage active transportation and
ensure integrated management of resources in order
to become a model of sustainable urban renewal. The
accessibility of the waterfront areas and innovative water
management are driving forces behind promoting nature
experiences.

The strategic vision determines the values and major
thrusts guiding Laval’s development. It is based on five
mainstays that are all facets for building a greener and
more human city:
1. Lively in nature: Laval ensures its urban development
is in balance, through the conservation and
enhancement of its natural environments.
2. Attractive in nature: Laval develops pleasant living
environments, on a human scale, that are accessible
and well-provided with services and activities.
3. Human in nature: Laval gives priority to the
well-being and quality of life of all its residents.
4. Enterprising in nature: Laval encourages economic
development and prosperity.
5. Committed in nature: Through its governance,
Laval encourages residents’ participation.
A resident-oriented vision for 2035
”
“The vision has been created through outstanding efforts,”
pointed out Serge Lamontagne. “Now we have to adopt it:
develop a downtown core and neighbourhood hubs that
are strong—with efficiency, agility and better management
practices.” The strategic vision for 2035 calls upon the City’s
Administration to excel in its efforts, actions and ideas.
But it is by personifying itself through all its residents that
Laval will be fully “urban in nature” in 2035.

A major modern city, Laval is being developed in respect of its residents’ well-being. Its urban development
is in keeping with the conservation and enhancement of its natural environments. Throughout the island, its
friendly districts and its attractive downtown area form a lively mosaic, with its rivers, its woodlands, its parks
and its agricultural lands. In 2035, Laval will be a genuine urban force, surrounded by nature.

parks, Laval is a green, sustainable city where it is
wonderful to live and breathe.
In 2035, Laval stands out as the second
largest city in Québec. On the strength
of its creativity, its vitality and the
diversity of its economy, Laval stimulates
entrepreneurship and attracts major
corporations. These organizations fit
into the social fabric and contribute to its prosperity.
Attractive in nature
The City never stops becoming lovelier and
more attractive. In 2035, the revitalized
zones will form an integrated, well-knit
environment. At the core of the inhabited spaces,
pedestrian areas welcome a wide variety of services as
well as cultural, sports and recreational activities. Well
laid out bikeways, an optimized public transit network
and major highways make it easier to get from place
to place. These pleasant living environments appeal to
Laval residents who live, work and spend their leisure
time here.

Green Scene
A New Forest for Laval Residents
In spring 2015, in connection with Laval’s 50th anniversary and Laval Earth
Week, over 10,000 trees and shrubs were planted at the Centre de la nature,
thereby laying the groundwork for an urban forest covering more than three
hectares. This legacy of Ville de Laval to its community will contribute, among
other things, toward:
timproving the quality of the soil, through the roots of the trees
that will be able to stabilize it, aerate it and in so doing, help
the rainwater seep through
tpurifying the air and capturing carbon in order to fight climate change.
It takes approximately 130 mature trees to capture the 4500 kg of CO 2
that a motor vehicle produces in travelling 20,000 km
treducing the surrounding temperature, by creating an oasis of cool,
fresh air

tproviding a new natural environment for enjoying physical activities,
such as walking and cross-country skiing
teducating adults and children about urban wild life as well
as woodland ecosystems
The greenery that has been planted has been chosen to represent five forest areas typical of southern Québec:
tHickory-sugar maple forest made up of sugar maples, red and large fruit-bearing oak trees, black cherry
and linden
tConiferous forest featuring evergreen trees, where fir, hemlock and spruce are predominant
tRed oak-pine forest—a fragrant area where silver birch mingles with red oak and pine
tSugar maple-yellow birch forest, displaying a thousand colours in the fall, with sugar maple, red maple,
yellow birch, linden and hemlock
tMixed wood forest—a wonderful place to relax, with its mix of evergreen and leafy trees. Larch, fir, red maple,
silver birch and yellow birch intermingle.
This Ville de Laval project was carried out in cooperation with Québec Earth Day, the Fondation Cowboys fringants
and the Centre de formation horticole de Laval, with support from the Québec government. It comes within the
objective of the 375,000 Trees Program, to increase the forest cover in Greater Montréal by 2017.
Broken, Stolen or Lost Blue Bins

announced its intention to

bins used in Laval
households. If your blue
bin was broken, stolen or
lost, you must notify the City
directly, by phoning 311.

recyclables in plastic bags
before placing them in the
bin. Bags are accepted in
the collection, but must be
placed individually, just like
all your other recyclables.

An environmentally-responsible
50th anniversary, to reduce the
eco-footprint
In order to reduce the impact on the environment, the
organizers of Laval’s 50th anniversary festivities have
taken a number of environmentally responsible initiatives:
tto reduce the garbage produced
tto collect recyclable materials
tto increase participants’ awareness of properly sorting
waste
tto calculate and compensate for greenhouse gas
emissions produced by participants’ travels
So that you, too, can contribute toward the eco-responsible
success of the celebrations of Laval’s 50th anniversary, use
public transit to get to the events or come by bike, bring
your reusable bottle of water and keep an eye out for the
green brigade and the recycling stations!

Water Hose Precautions
With the return of summer, pay special attention to the
connection of your outdoor water hose: A new hose
exposed to the sun and left under pressure promotes the
migration of volatile chemical compounds in the water.
Odours of burned rubber or plastic may then become
noticeable, even inside your house.
To prevent such unpleasant smells, it is preferable to
always close the outdoor tap after use. You can also add
a certified backflow preventer to it.
It is moreover recommended that you avoid leaving a
water hose immersed in a pail, pool or any other basin:
Through a suction effect, contaminants could seep into
the drinking water system.
And don’t forget to follow the watering rules, in force
May 15 – September 15. Under these rules, a water hose
may be used only if it is equipped with a hand-held nozzle,
every second day, depending on your address.
Urban BioKit
Québec’s 4H Clubs are rolling out a project this summer
to promote Laval’s agricultural areas: Entertainment,
interpretation activities and the launch of the mobile
application called the Urban BioKit, created in cooperation
with CREO and Environment Canada.
This Summer, Let’s Preserve
Drinking Water!
In the summer, water consumption on Laval territory
increases considerably. Here is some advice to help us
preserve this precious resource:
tFollow the rules, which authorize lawn watering
and pool filling every second day, depending on
your address. The time of day allowed is determined
according to the type of watering system you have.
tGet a rain barrel in order to supply your greenery
with warm, untreated water. The City offers a rebate
of up to $70 for the purchase of this barrel.
tIf the water level in your pool drops significantly
during very hot periods, get a solar blanket. Not only
will it help the water keep its warmth, but it will also
prevent it from evaporating.

A Safe Pool Set-Up
to Prevent Drownings
Don’t Get Distracted:
It May Be a Robbery Attempt!
Safety around residential pools must never be neglected.
A child can drown in as little as 15-20 seconds, which is
less time than it takes to answer the phone!
Various safety measures can help cut down on the number
of drownings, and particularly those related to pool access.
It has been shown that children manage to access the
water mainly due to three major flaws in the pool set-up:
A smiling, polite person comes over to you: “Excuse me;
I’m not familiar with this neighbourhood. Could you help
me?” It may well be someone in need of information, but
it could also be a clever trap to do you harm...
tdirect access to a pool from a patio or a walkway
attached to the house
tthe absence or defect of an automatic gate closing or
locking mechanism
taccess to the pool using a detachable ladder that was
not removed after swimming
Police Visits to Child Care Centres
Did you know that nearly one-third of victims who drown
in residential pools are under 5 years old? In order to
increase tiny tots’ awareness of safety rules when swimming,
Laval police officers will be visiting child care centres
all throughout the summer. Don’t forget that it is of the
utmost importance to keep a close watch over children
and exercise caution at all times!

ERRATUM –
Mandatory CO Detectors
Contrary to what was indicated in the previous issue
of Vivre à Laval, it is mandatory to have one carbon
monoxide (CO) detector per house and not one on
each floor.

Robberies through distraction are carried out by wellprepared teams. The robbers use various strategies to
approach you, distract you and then rob from you. Often,
the victim realizes he or she has been robbed only a few
hours or a few days later.
How to protect yourself:
tWhen making your bank transactions, hide
the keyboard when you enter your PIN.
tKeep an eye on your purse or wallet.
tAlways keep a safe distance of approximately
1 metre (3-4 feet) from you and any strangers,
and don’t let them get any closer to you.
tDon’t accept any gifts that someone may try to pin
on your clothing or around your neck.
Are you a victim?
tContact your financial institution to report the theft
of your debit or credit cards.
tImmediately take notes on suspects, including their
physical description and what they are wearing as
well as the vehicle they are using, if any: You will no
doubt forget certain details a few hours later.
tContact your police department to report the theft.
Prevention is the best protection against distraction thefts.
Be careful! Even good Samaritans sometimes fall victim
to bad encounters.

Free Car Seat Check
Bike Patrollers
The Laval police are offering to check the installation of
your children’s car seats free of charge (by appointment
only), to make sure that:
Summer is here and the patrollers are back on their bikes!
May 11 - September 13, 1 p.m. – 1:30 a.m., seven days
a week, a dozen police officers on bicycles will be going
up and down public places, parks, waterfront areas and
bicycle paths on Laval territory. Their assignment: to enforce
municipal bylaws and ensure Laval residents’ peace and
quiet. Wave to them; they are there for you!
tThe seat is appropriate to the child’s weight
and height.
tThe car seat is well secured to the seat of the car.
tThe child is properly buckled in to the car seat.
tThe parents clearly understand the safety rules
for using car seats.

Boaters: Take Care on the Rivers
During the summer, the Service de police de Laval will
be increasing its watchful eye on boaters, in order to
enforce the rules and regulations on Des Prairies and
Mille Îles rivers. The patrol members will also be giving
out prevention advice.
Safe boating rules to follow:
tAnyone operating a motorized pleasure boat must
carry proof of competency at all times.
tThe boater must have aboard enough life jackets or
personal floatation devices (PFDs) in good condition,
capable of ensuring good floatability and appropriate
for the size of each person on board.
tDon’t drive a boat if you are drinking alcohol:
You must always be alert and well able to handle
anything that might occur. Driving under the
influence—on water as on the road—is illegal
and dangerous. The consequences are the same.

Here is some wise advice on installing and using your
barbecue:
tMake sure you choose an approved appliance
(CGA, CSA, ULC, WH/ELT, UL, RBQ) and follow the
instructions in the manufacturer’s user guide.
tAbide by the clearance specified in the user guide.
tBefore using it for the first time in the season, clean
and check the burners as well as the supply lines of
your appliance and carry out a leak test on the lines
and connections using soapy water.
tWhen transporting the propane tank in a motor
vehicle, make sure you keep it upright, open the
windows and leave the trunk half-open. Remember
that a tank more than 10 years old must not be used
again.

Family Life
All seniors 65 years old and over living in Laval on May 1,
2015 as a tenant or owner of a dwelling or housing unit
serving as their main residence are eligible to receive
financial support of $100 (or $200 if they are guaranteed
income supplement recipients), if they meet the qualifying
conditions. Please note that this financial assistance may
be shared between spouses or co-tenants if all are 65 years
old or over. However, one single cheque will be issued. To
take advantage of this support program, the form must be
filled out and the required documents must be submitted
with the form.

Budding young artists will find ways of having fun in the
varied cultural program designed specially for them. As for

Would your teens like to work and gain experience instead?
Why not encourage them to get their DAFA? The diplôme
d’aptitude aux fonctions d’animateur (DAFA) is a diploma
in leadership skills for 15-year-olds and over. It is a prerequisite for a number of summer jobs offered by Ville
de Laval.

Laval Residents Proud of Their City
Last fall, a number of market research studies were conducted among some 900 Laval residents. Here is an overview
of the findings:

Survey among companies
Laval residents’ pride in their city is very high: Nearly
8 residents out of 10 (78.9%) said they were “quite proud”,
if not “very proud”, to be living in Laval.
According to 60 heads of companies located in Laval who
responded to a telephone interview to obtain their views on
the Laval business community, the aspects that distinguish
Laval from nearby cities, from a business standpoint, are
its advantageous geographic location in Greater Montréal,
the quality of its road system, its economic vitality and
growth, the continued presence of space for industrial,
commercial and residential development and the labour
supply.
The main positive aspects about Laval that were mentioned
by the respondents are the peace and quiet (25.4%),
nearness to Montréal (17.4%), all the surrounding nature
and many green spaces (11.5%) as well as all the many
shops (11.5%). The negative aspects reported included
insufficient public transit service outside rush hours
(16.9%), traffic (9.7%), road maintenance (8.7%) and
excessive taxation (6.6%).
With regard to developing the City’s image, the residents
surveyed feel that the City should promote its green
features—its nature, its parks and its woodlands—as a
priority (92.2%).
Nearly two-thirds of respondents (62.5%) would recommend
to young families, over any other household category, that
they come and live in Laval.

the spread of emerald ash
borers—harmful insects that
destroy this tree species and
whose presence has been
confirmed throughout our
territory.
There was also a general consensus among the companies
surveyed that Laval is a healthy, peaceful city, full of
diversity and contrasts. To a lesser degree, but still a
high percentage of the respondents agreed that Laval
is a city surrounded by water, that enhances its natural
spaces and that achieves a balance between urban life
and agricultural life.
In addition, the companies sur veyed suggested the
following major growth projects: create a real downtown
area, improve the public transit system as well as develop
and preserve green spaces in the urban environment.

Telephone Reporting Line
The mission of the Bureau d’intégrité et d’éthique de Laval
(BIEL) is to protect the integrity of the City’s Administration
and to promote ethical behaviour. The City’s residents,
elected officials, employees, suppliers and partners are
encouraged to report any irregularities by phone, at
450 575-BIEL (2435), or by email, at [email protected]. The
telephone line also makes it possible to directly reach
the Unité permanente anticorruption (UPAC). The main

also devoted her time to identifying
the obstacles encountered by the
disabled in Laval and finding possible
concrete, sustainable solutions for
remedying them.
A Laval resident since 2001, Sylvie
Richer ranked among the 2014
regional finalists for the À part entière
award presented by the Office des
Wi t h i n h e r c i v i c i nvo l ve m e n t a s
a resident, Sylvie Richer has been
a member of Laval’s joint advisory
committee on accessibility since 2009
and serves as the representative of
disabled residents and those with
reduced mobility. She has taken part
in a number of projects, including
the improvements to Ville de Laval’s
Internet site for the disabled. As the
owner of an adapted home in Laval,
she has also been involved in the
adapted recycling bin project, making
it possible for its users to maintain
their full autonomy. Since 2011, she
has moreover been a member of the
panel of judges at the Reconnaissance
Laval – Visages d’art gala event.
Sylvie Richer is a go-getter who does
her utmost to obtain the targeted
results. She isn’t hesitant to invest
the necessar y time and energy to
achieve her objectives. She particularly
appreciates teamwork, discussions
and partnerships and collaborates
with enthusiasm and great interest
in making progress in the projects of
great concern to her.

Héma-Québec Honours Laval Blood Donor Clinic’s Organizing Committee
In 2014, Mayor Marc Demers, the elected officials, the volunteers and the members of the Organizing Committee were proud
of their accomplishments: 805 donors had responded, to date, to the appeal made by Héma-Québec and Ville de Laval.
Last spring, the organizing committee of the Laval Blood Donor clinic was honoured by Héma-Québec. The volunteers
on this committee—which has been in existence for over 40 years—was awarded a certificate marking well-deserved
recognition, as some members have been devoting their time and energy to this clinic for several dozen years!
Congratulations to these generous volunteers and to all those who work toward making our blood donor clinic the
largest in all of Canada. Make it a date on September 11 at Centre sportif Bois-de-Boulogne for the next Laval Blood
Donor Clinic!

Prix Hosia
2015 Hosia Award Winners
Ville de Laval wishes to congratulate the nominee volunteers and organizations at the 31st Gala des prix Hosia.
Organized in partnership with the Caisses Desjardins de Laval, the official volunteer tribute evening event was held
on May 12 in Salle André-Mathieu, with Laval Mayor Marc Demers and Daniel Bélanger, Chairman of the Board of
the Caisse Desjardins de l’Ouest de Laval serving as patrons. Reporter and game show host Guy Mongrain was the
master of ceremonies for the 8th year in a row.
This annual event provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the dedication of the women and men who have become
involved in the Laval community through volunteering during the year and to publicly highlight their commitment.
The selection of the 30 award winners for 2015 was entrusted to a committee composed of eight people from Laval
organizations and municipal departments and chaired by Sylvain Filion, General Manager of the Caisse populaire
Desjardins des Mille-Îles. The panel of judges examined the candidates’ nomination papers based on four criteria:
diversity, impact, dynamic spirit and innovation in volunteering.
Through this event, Ville de Laval wishes to show its great appreciation for volunteers’ contribution and highlight
the value of their contribution to our society. To all our volunteers, we wish to say “thank you!”.

Orchestra
in the City
AUGUST
AUGUST 6, CENTROPOLIS
For the first time in its history, the Orchestre
symphonique de Laval, with its 55 musicians,
is travelling to certain parks and waterfront
areas to present you free outdoor concerts.
August 6 is a special day in Laval,
as it was on that same date, in 1965,
that the 14 municipalities merged
to form Ville de Laval. Residents are
therefore invited to celebrate this
historical event by getting together
at Centropolis’ Place du 50e. In the
evening, attend the free concert by
the Orchestre symphonique de Laval,
accompanied by soprano Marie-Josée
Lord, which will be followed by the
last performance of the
Insula. L’histoire d’une île show.
Soloist Marie-Josée Lord will be
accompanying the orchestra during the three
concerts in August. You mustn’t miss this
special performance!

Thanks to the CARTEL project, a unique
artistic legacy is being offered to residents
within Laval’s 50th anniversary. In fact, six
plural works representing the wide range
of contemporary artistic practices will be
created on various municipal buildings
to remain as permanent enhancements

watch the live transformation and talk
to the professional artists at Pavillon
du Bois-Papineau as well as at Cartier,
Chomedey and Hartland-Monahan arenas,
Marc-Aurèle-Fortin Park shelter and Centre

chance to rediscover the country charms of
the eastern tip of île Jésus.

identity as well as our suburban multi-ethnic

An exhibition and publication project bringing
together artists and authors from the suburbs.
Highlighted by entertainment, activities and
surprises, the outstanding route will take
you from boulevard Lesage to boulevard
Lévesque, along Rivière des Prairies to
Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, where picturesque
landscapes await you. You will then pedal on
to Saint-François and the eastern tip of the
island, within its enchanting setting, before
turning onto boulevard des Mille-Îles, which
runs along the river of the same name.
After a rest stop at Hébert school-park,
you will return to your point of departure
via the pastoral boulevard Sainte-Marie.
On your arrival at the Centre de la nature,
you will be welcomed by warm applause
and entertainment at the traditional family
festivities—the Fête de la famille—taking
place the same day.

A series of free world music concerts that will
be presented in the indoor garden of Maison des
arts on Thursdays, in a happy hour format

Ville de Laval’s Service de police, the Société
d’histoire et de généalogie de l’île Jésus
(SHGIJ) and Collège Montmorency are
pooling their efforts to present a historical
travelling exhibition on the development of
Laval’s police services and, above all, their
invaluable contribution to the development
of our community. The exhibition, which
was created through the cooperation of
professors and graduating students in
Collège Montmorency’s Techniques de
muséologie program, presents objects and
photographs from private collections or
submitted by the SHGIJ as well as from the
archived records of the Service de police de
Laval. In this exhibition, each aspect of the
past is associated with one in the present so
as to place the developments in the police
officers’ work in perspective.
The police will be travelling to various
locations, including the municipal libraries
and the Cosmodôme, to present you this
special, unique exhibition.

Cultural Outings
From June to August, some forty outdoor shows will be presented all over Laval, just
for you! Something for every taste… Bring your lawn chair and your good humour
and get ready to enjoy unforgettable evenings!
On Friday evenings, Sainte-Dorothée will be the scene of the action, on a brand new,
cosy stage set up on the public square. The program features classic instrumental
music, reinvented jazz and flamenco melodies, both duos and solos. We look forward
to seeing you there on July 10, 17 and 24.
On Saturday evenings, head for Vieux-Sainte-Rose, where emerging artists will be
in the spotlight. You will be treated to a variety of performances: acapella songs,
pop, folk, swing, rockabilly, jazz and dance. Make it a date on July 4, 11, 18 and 25.
On Sunday evenings, Des Prairies Park will resound to the rhythm of eclectic shows,
where you will have the chance to discover young creators. The singer-songwritercomposers of tomorrow will carry you off to their musical worlds, ranging from
popular songs to jazz to folk. Don’t miss the cabaret evenings: July 5, 12, 19 and
26 as well as August 2 and 9.
And that’s not all!
Heritage tours (page 11) as well as visual arts and world music at Maison des arts (page 19), concerts within the Orchestre

Grand Première in Laval: Vaccination Exhibition
Although there is a large consensus within the scientific
community with regard to vaccinations, it is up to each person
to accept or reject this biotechnology. In presenting the
new Vaccins exhibition, the Armand Frappier Museum team
hopes to equip its visitors with knowledge so that they can
make well-informed decisions in this regard. Accompanied
by a scientific guide, the visitors will become familiar with
pathogenic micro-organisms and discover the diseases they
cause. They will evaluate the scope of the benefits and side
effects of vaccinations, take the mystery out of how they act
in the body and learn more about how they are manufactured.

All throughout their tour, various stimulating ways and means
will arouse the scientific curiosity of kids and grown-ups alike.
At the Museum lab, visitors will enjoy an experiment on the
spread of micro-organisms and will observe specimens under
the microscope. Guided tours are offered every day during the
summer, at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Insula. L’histoire d’une île is an awesome
outdoor show that will carry you off to
the heart of the history of île Jésus and its
inhabitants. Through images and special
effects projected against an impressive,
60-metre -long water screen, you will
travel through time to the rhythm of
stories of Laval, both big and small. This
show—the only one of its kind in all of
Québec—was designed specially for the
50th anniversary celebrations!
This summer, during Festi’Week-ends, visitors to the Centre de la nature will have
a chance to take advantage of a free, outdoor program for families and the general
public. The activities will take place over five consecutive weekends, July 17 –
August 16, Friday – Sunday.
During the day, children are invited to the playhouses at the Village des arts,
where colourful characters will be offering them loads of workshops, activities
and entertainment.
Families looking for theatre outings will be delighted by Les Pouilleux, the awesome
musical adventure about a group of charming, dirty people. Action guaranteed!
If you like dancing, music and singing, you will surely get your fill: Just head for the
pergola located near the lake for daytime performances to your heart’s content. In
the evening, make it a date at the Village des arts stage, which can accommodate
hundreds of spectators in an intimate yet festive atmosphere. Thanks to the “close
encounters” between performers and their audiences that these two venues can
offer, spectators are bound to take pleasure in a unique experience!
So come discover a variety of musical worlds: pop, folk, world music, jazz, hip-hop
and much more. Here are some of the artists featured on the Village des arts stage

Artisans’ Week

City Hall—A Modern, Unique Building
Starting August 6, drop by City Hall to visit the exhibition on the history
of this building. Constructed between 1962 and 1964, the building--which
was originally called the Centre civique de Chomedey—still illustrates today
all the importance of modern architecture in Laval’s landscape. Thanks to
photos, plans and other archival records, you will learn more about the
building’s designers, the political situation surrounding its construction
and the architectural features that make our City Hall unique.

Life in Laval,
As Seen by Stroke Victims
Within Laval’s 50th anniversary celebrations,
the Association AVC-Aphasie Laval is presenting
an exhibition of 20 paintings by stroke victims.
Moving works illustrating moments of their lives,
their dreams, their activities and their day-to-day
problems. In June at the Multiculturelle library,
then in July at the Sylvain-Garneau library and
in August at the Laure-Conan library.

Do You See What I Hear?
Vois-tu ce que j’entends ? (Do you see what I hear?)
is a travelling exhibition of photos taken by the
blind, or people with low vision, and produced
by Julien Perron-Gagné. Inspired by this Laval

In Sainte-Rose
Laval residents will be in a festive mood on June 24! The Fête nationale du Québec
à Laval organization and its partners are planning many activities to celebrate pride
in being residents of the city of Laval and the province of Québec.
In Saint-François, Du Moulin Park will play host to numerous free activities. Starting
at 11 a.m., there will be a walkathon with dogs on a leash, a 12-km cycling excursion,
a singing and music contest, face painting, a show and more… Then at 9 p.m., a
bonfire, to be followed by fireworks at 10:15 p.m., will bring this holiday to a close.
The Association des residents de Champfleury will propose activities at Champfleury
Park, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Inflatable play structures, an introduction to the circus, musical
performances, magic shows and more, for both kids and grown-ups.
You prefer a city environment? Come to Place du 50 e at Centropolis in the afternoon
to take have fun. A big table installed along avenue Pierre-Péladeau will also provide
you with an opportunity to discover the flavours of home-grown produce and other

Science Camps at Armand Frappier Museum
The Cosmodôme’s 3-week program provides 5-13-year-olds
with an opportunity to discover three major space science
fields through the Astronaute en action (Astronauts in action),
Des poussières d’étoiles (Stardust) and Explorateur de l’espace
(Space Explorer) options. Every week, 9-year-olds and over
will have a chance to test two training simulators, while the
younger ones will take part in specially-adapted motor skills
workshops. An innovative experience, with qualified staff, in
an environment that is unique in all of Canada.
Curious 6-13-year-olds may register for one of the Museum’s five
science camps. By carrying out experiments and taking part in
play activities, the camps provide an opportunity to explore a
number of disciplines, such as biosciences, microbiology, the
environment, human health and biotechnologies.

July 19-25, during Drowning Prevention Week, the Splash brigade will be visiting a number of swimming pools to launch its

Wheelchair Tennis at Du Sablon Park: Play Your Summer Away!

Playing sports for free on accessible courts that are clean
Starting Saturday, July 4, 9 a.m. – noon, and until October,
people with functional limitations are invited to play tennis in
a very special setting: Thanks to Parasport Québec and Ville de
Laval, tennis is now accessible to the disabled, at Du Sablon
Park in Chomedey. Parasport Québec provides the wheelchairs,
racquets and balls so that everyone can be introduced to this
sport and enjoy it to the fullest.
