This trail is the last part of the national trail 33 that ends at Cape Maleas
lighthouse and it is the most common and famous hiking trail of the area.
Starting Point (SP): Velanidia: The trail begins next to the small square and
before the second coffee house. It goes to the south through a cement alley and
uphill to a water tank at the edge of the village. Then it turns to south-east and
meets a shrine.
400 m. from (SP) it meets a crossroad with the trail ∆11 to Aghia Marina.
It is the left side, meets the sheep-pen, and crosses a ravine and its direction
changes to north-eastern. It passes by a shrine and then it becomes a small
and narrow dirt road.
1.600 m. from (SP) it reaches the chapel of Panagia Dekapentistria and then a
small dirt road.
2.100 m. from (SP) the trail meets a bigger dirt road coming from Velanidia
opposite to an abandoned windmill. It continues on a dirt road with south
direction.
4.025 m. (from SP it reaches the chapel of Aghios Thomas. Opposite to its
fountain it begins the trail to Cape Maleas. (Note: At the beginning of the course
there are two different marked trails that meet each other). The trail passes
by the coastline and after a shipwreck at about
8.570 m. from (SP) it ends at the lighthouse of Cape Maleas.
The wildness of the scenery at the last part of the trail renders it especially
impressive, while the ships that pass by Cape Maleas draw the hikers’
attention.

Maleas Peninsula is rich in history and natural beauty.
The local long history is confirmed by the significant
archaeological findings of the ancient city Vies at Neapoli
and the submerged Mycenaean city at Pavlopetri.
Its continuation is emphasized by the number of byzantine
monasteries and churches of the area that have given the site
the name of Little Mount Athos.
The whole area is also called “Vatika”. At its centre there is the
Mt. Krithina (800 m.) at the ends of which are formed leeward
ports, old haunts of pirates, small beaches and abrupt rocks
of Cape Maleas. The stone lighthouse of Cape Maleas is
a local reference point.
On the other side the calm bay of Neapoli, providing shelter from
heavy seas and the fertile plain of Neapoli are in contrast with the
wildness of the rest of the scenery. Most of the villages are built
on steep slopes and their white houses and narrow streets are
reminiscent of the picturesque Aegean islands.
Some impressive natural sights of the region are interesting,
while the numerous local caves are worth visiting; the most
significant is that of Aghios Andreas at Kastania and the
petrified forest with its rich paleontological
findings at Aghia Marina.

The visitor may choose established routes or harder trails
according to their interests, fitness and available time. It is an
area ideal for hiking. They are relatively simple trails having
points with excellent view that you may hike all year round.
It perfectly combines mountain and sea, sub-mountainous
and mountainous areas with the coast.

The hiking trails described herein suggest a different way
of approach and acquaintance with the area. They offer to
the visitor-hiker direct and substantial contact with nature,
the residents and the local history. Therefore they are
more for hiking than mountaineering in order to bring out
the best of the local sights: historical, architectural, religious,
environmental. They are mostly based on the old trails of
communication between the villages via rural and less
asphalt roads if necessary.

Relatively easy trail leading to the abandoned and until recently inaccessible by
road settlement Loggari. It is an old, stone and abandoned settlement, perfect
example of architectural and historic interest.
Starting Point (SP): Aghios Ioannis: The trail begins from a dirt road just a few
meters out of the village with east direction.
1.280 m. from (SP) it follows a smaller dirt road to the north which ends after 1,730 m.
3.010 m. from (SP) it begins a stone path passing through the Lagkada gorge.
There are still the breast walls and at some points remnants of the old
cobblestone street. It passes by a memorial and now you may see the
settlement
6.300 m. from (SP) the course ends at Loggari.

Starting point: 850 m. after Riechia on the way to Vathy Avlaki beach it begins
the trail to Balogairi Gorge. The course passes through abandoned fields with
terraces and the gorge descent is made in the river bed, among stones and
rocks.
At least in 15 cases it is required abseiling on vertical rocks and in one case
technical means are necessary (ropes, safetying with rings on the rock etc).
Therefore the descent should be effectuated with the assistance of experienced
attendants in this type of crossing. In one case, the trail by-passes to the left
slope of the gorge since it is impossible to cross through its bottom due to very
abrupt and rocky formations at this point.
It is a beautiful and impressive course between red vertical rocks where predatory
birds nest. Not recommended during the months of April and May when birds
are hatching. The gorge bottom is most of the time full with oleanders.
The gorge ends at Balogairi beach. A small uphill path connects the beach with
a dirt road leading to the main road.
Overall distance 4.750 m.

By the road leading from Boeae to Epidaurus
Limera is a sanctuary of Artemis Limnatis
(Of the Lake) in the country of the Epidaurians.
The city lies on high ground, not far from the
sea. Here the sanctuary of Artemis is worth
seeing, also that of Aphrodite and that of
Asclepius with a standing statue of stone,
a temple of Athena on the acropolis, and
of Zeus with the title Saviour in front of
the harbour. A promontory called Minoa
projects into the sea near the town.

Aghia Paraskevi
Starting Point (SP): From the big headland of trial Π2 there is a north-eastern
path that in 330 m. leads to the ruined Panagia Monastery. (Note: The monastery
was rebuilt in 1546 by Grigoris Graikos who was from Monemvasia and this is the
reason why the locals nowadays call it Grigori monastery). There are the stone
walls of the building and part of the marble wall dedicatory inscription. From there,
a path to the south and after
1.660 m. from (SP) ends to the small coastal settlement of Aghia Paraskevi.
This trail was created by the local Greek Mountaineering Club of the
South-Eastern Laconia (EOSNAL).
Starting point (SP): Harakas: From the centre of the village on the way to
Kyparissi, it initially follows the cement road by the church with the cemetery
of the village with west direction. It passes by the school and after it becomes
dirt road. Its direction changes to north-west. It successively forks with a dirt
road to the right and then to the left.
2.850 m. from (SP) it meets a sheep-pen and there is the end of the dirt road.
From there it begins a trail, always with north-west direction which gradually
enters the fir forest, uphill next to a small ravine. It reaches a headland with fields
shaped with terraces (970 m. elevation) and after a while,
5.050 m. from (SP) it meets trail X1-E33 and follows it to the north-west for 660
m. and
5.700 m. from (SP) it meets a big slope. It leaves trail X1-E33 from there and its
direction turns to east; from the end of the slope, it begins a downhill trail.
After a hut of a sheep-pen with a well, it continues by a ravine.
8.850 m. from SP it follows to the east the old wide trail X4 to Babala. It meets
remains of the old cobblestone street and after the distinctive “doors” between
the rocks, it continues for quite a long distance by the roots of vertical rocks.
Thereafter, the trail descends with numerous meanders for
12.530 m. from (SP) and reaches the main road to Kyparissi, very close to the
old watermill with the chapel of Panagia before Vrysi settlement. 600 m. before
the end of the trail, there is a shorter exit to the asphalt road, about 1,000 m.
before the previous one.

cement road (Note: there is a relative informatory sign) that leads to the old
slaughter houses. It continues on a paved path along Larnaka gorge. Small
bridges and wooden stairs facilitate the access. After a paved street the trail
continues to the main gorge where the path is not built. At certain points there
are ropes to help you climb. The trail successively passes by three watermills.

1.050 m. from (SP) it abandons the ravine and goes uphill to the right side of it.
About 1.250 m. from (SP) it reaches the chapel of Panagitsa. It follows a short
distance of dirt road after the chapel and shortly in (130 m.), that is to say
1.380 m. from (SP) on a sharp left turn, it continues on a path with north-west
direction. Initially it twists in the ravine for the climb to Strongyla
1.700 m. from (SP) it leaves the ravine and goes uphill in twists to the right
slope. It passes under rocks for about 700 meters and
2.400 m. from (SP) it reaches a distinctive col where there is a crossroad of
trails. From there a small path of about 200 m. with east direction leads to a
rock with excellent view to Molai. The main part of hiking to Strongyla continues
uphill and to the north-west on the back of the slope.
3.500 m. from (SP) it is the top of the trail where there is a trigonometric point
and a telecommunications antenna (915 m. elevation). From this point you
enjoy the view to the Laconian Gulf, Mount Taygetus, Mount Parnonas and the
surroundings.
The way down to Molai is by returning first of all to the col at the trails’ crossroad.
After a small cluster of kermes oaks it goes downhill to a ravine to the north-east.
After it, it turns south-east and after
1.730 m. from the col it reaches a small dirt road above the Nursing Home of
the Metropolis with the big cross above Molai. It follows the dirt road to the
south-west and in (440 m.)
2.170 m. from the col it meets a cement street. It continues to the left and west
(right and east to the chapel of Panagitsa) and in (895 m.),
3.065 m. from the col it reaches the north side of Molai central square.
Starting Point: Gerakas: The course begins from the coastal road of Gerakas
Port. It follows a small uphill cement road leading to the upper houses of the
village.
From there it begins a path leading to the ruins of the ancient city of Zarakas.
You may reach the outskirts of the walls at the edge of the cliffs of the entrance
at the village’s port by the sea, which however is invisible from the sea. At this
point it is said that there was a chain that used to stop the unwelcome ships
to enter the cove.
On your way back, another path passing through the archaeological site leads
to an old ruined building, probably a posterior church. A downhill path from the
edge of the archaeological site leads to the cemetery. From this point the trail
ends at the picturesque settlement of Gerakas Port and on the coastal road.

Starting point: Harakas: Next to the chapel of Aghia Paraskevi at Harakas, under
Paliochora with the castle’s ruins. (Note: The beginning of the path is stone built
and has breast walls while it is an exceptional sample of architecture).
The trail descends with several meanders and for short distance with slight
slopes, but then it continues quite abruptly next to a ravine until the beach of
Piliza. Towards its end it passes through fields with terraces.
The total elevation between the beginning and the end is 600 m. It is a difficult trail
the end of which is however a beautiful beach you may reach only from the sea.

This trail is about one of the two old paths leading to the historic location
Palaiochora which during difficult periods used to be a shelter for the residents
of Kyparissi.
Starting point: Kyparissi: Vrysi: The trail begins from the same point as X3
and X4. It meets a hut of a sheep-pen, abandons X3 and turns right to the northwest. The trail passes by the church of Profitis Ilias and close to Babali cave.
With slight slopes it goes uphill to Palaiochora at certain points on flat rock
slabs and on the roots of big vertical rocks. It crosses a ravine and turns to the
north.
At the location “Reikiona” it meets the second trail and it begins the final
climb to Palaiochora. There are several ruins from old buildings (houses and
churches), samples of the size the settlement used to have. Thereafter the trail
goes a little more uphill (940 m. elevation) and then it goes downhill among firs
until the church of Aghia Varvara.
There it is connected to X2 trail.

This trail passes through the small plateau of Babala and connects the trails:
Χ2: Kyparissi - Kremasti and Χ3: Harakas - Kyparissi. Babala used to be a
point of reference to the economic life of Kyparissi. There was a small stock
raising and agricultural settlement with several scattered huts and the chapel
of Aghios Ioannis. The traill is the same with X3 for the first 3750 m. After that
until Babala is quite wide. Thereafter however it gets narrower, passes through
fields and terraces and gets up to 950 m. elevation. Then it goes downhill and
after the hut of a sheep-pen ends up after about 5000 m. at trail X2.

An interesting and different approach of Monemvasia the tour by the roots of
the rock of the castle by the sea.
Starting Point: Behind the restaurant and hotel located just after the bridge,
on the way to the castle. The trail surrounds the rock from its north side while
the sea is on the left. It passes from an old tank and reaches the old stone
lighthouse. Little further and with total length 1850 m. it meets the walls and
enters the fortress town of Monemvasia. The trail offers a complete view of this

the remnants of the previous activities and enjoy the beautiful
scenery.
The hiking trails are based on the old paths of the mountain and run
over its whole surface. National trail 33 is the main trail, beginning from
Mt. Parnonas and ending at Cape Maleas, which passes across Chionovouni
from Kremasti to Lampokampos. Across it there are routes that connect
the villages to the mountain’s roots, Kyparissi with its settlements and
Harakas.
The trails herein described are the basic ones from the network of trails
on Chionovouni. They may be combined for the hiker /mountaineer to
choose those fitting to their interests and physical fitness, providing
a variety of starting points and destinations.
Altitude
You may not easily imagine that so close to the beautiful coastal
village Kyparissi, behind and above the erect, vertical rocks
surrounding it there is a mountain with big fir forests available
for very nice hiking experiences.
Chionovouni is included in Natura programme which used to be a
field of numerous human activities, as the number of sheep-pens
and the huts on every part of the mountain and the numerous
separated fields with the constructed terraces on every small plateau
indicate. Nowadays most of these activities have been abandoned,
mainly the agricultural ones. However, the possibilities provided
by the paths and the hiking trails are an opportunity to continue the
human presence on the mountain. The visitors- hikers may confirm
