Maleas Peninsula Trails Aghios Athanasios Distance Aghios Dimitrios Aghios Thomas Aghios Myron r o K Maleas Peninsula is rich in history and natural beauty. The local long history is confirmed by the significant archaeological findings of the ancient city Vies at Neapoli and the submerged Mycenaean city at Pavlopetri. Its continuation is emphasized by the number of byzantine monasteries and churches of the area that have given the site the name of Little Mount Athos. The whole area is also called “Vatika”. At its centre there is the Mt. Krithina (800 m.) at the ends of which are formed leeward ports, old haunts of pirates, small beaches and abrupt rocks of Cape Maleas. The stone lighthouse of Cape Maleas is a local reference point. On the other side the calm bay of Neapoli, providing shelter from heavy seas and the fertile plain of Neapoli are in contrast with the wildness of the rest of the scenery. Most of the villages are built on steep slopes and their white houses and narrow streets are reminiscent of the picturesque Aegean islands. Some impressive natural sights of the region are interesting, while the numerous local caves are worth visiting; the most significant is that of Aghios Andreas at Kastania and the petrified forest with its rich paleontological findings at Aghia Marina. 3 3 a TOWN 3.405 m 1h 15’ 8.570 m 2 h 45’ k HIKING TRAIL ga Koulentia o SECONDARY ROAD ∆10 Distance Trails ∆1 and ∆5 of the old hiking trails network of Maleas Peninsula may be combined and become one single course. ∆5: Starting Point (SP): Faraklo: Central church. Altitude Koulentia The hiking trails described herein suggest a different way of approach and acquaintance with the area. They offer to the visitor-hiker direct and substantial contact with nature, the residents and the local history. Therefore they are more for hiking than mountaineering in order to bring out the best of the local sights: historical, architectural, religious, environmental. They are mostly based on the old trails of communication between the villages via rural and less asphalt roads if necessary. Aghios Panteleimon 4.038.000 Π10 General map Ag. The course passes through abandoned fields with terraces and the gorge descent is made in the river bed, among stones and rocks. At least in 15 cases it is required abseiling on vertical rocks and in one case technical means are necessary (ropes, safetying with rings on the rock etc). Therefore the descent should be effectuated with the assistance of experienced attendants in this type of crossing. In one case, the trail by-passes to the left slope of the gorge since it is impossible to cross through its bottom due to very abrupt and rocky formations at this point. It is a beautiful and impressive course between red vertical rocks where predatory birds nest. Not recommended during the months of April and May when birds are hatching. The gorge bottom is most of the time full with oleanders. The gorge ends at Balogairi beach. A small uphill path connects the beach with a dirt road leading to the main road. Parnonas and ending at Cape Maleas, which passes across Chionovouni from Kremasti to Lampokampos. Across it there are routes that connect the villages to the mountain’s roots, Kyparissi with its settlements and Harakas. The trails herein described are the basic ones from the network of trails on Chionovouni. They may be combined for the hiker /mountaineer to choose those fitting to their interests and physical fitness, providing a variety of starting points and destinations. Altitude You may not easily imagine that so close to the beautiful coastal village Kyparissi, behind and above the erect, vertical rocks surrounding it there is a mountain with big fir forests available for very nice hiking experiences. Chionovouni is included in Natura programme which used to be a field of numerous human activities, as the number of sheep-pens and the huts on every part of the mountain and the numerous separated fields with the constructed terraces on every small plateau indicate. Nowadays most of these activities have been abandoned, mainly the agricultural ones. However, the possibilities provided by the paths and the hiking trails are an opportunity to continue the human presence on the mountain.
